    Notes:

    HIs middle name may have been William or Wilbour.

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Charles is listed as Charles C. Whitford, age 8. He is living at West Greenwich with his brother James and widowed father William, in the household with his (assumed) grandmother Sarah (Nichols) Whitford. Also there are Sarah M. Gorton 7, Abby Matteson 52, Sheffield R. Remington 37,and Mary Green 70. Abby Matteson was a midwife.

    He may be the Charles Whitford, age 19, farm laborer, in the 1860 Federal Census, living at Cranston with Silas & Freelove M. Rider, 66 & 52, and Betsey Brayton, 70.

    I believe Charles C. is really Charles W. because in the 1870 Federal Census, Charles W. & Mary A. Whitford, ages 27 & 20, have a woman named Abbie Matteson, 71, living with them in West Greenwich. She appears to be the same woman (the midwife) living in the Whitford household in 1850. In 1870 Charles & Mary have a daughter named Annie G. or J. age 3.

    In 1880 Charles W. & Mary A. Whitford, ages 35 & 30, are living at Warwick, RI. They have five children: Angenett 13, Abby E. 9, George E. 6, Maryetta 5, & William H. 1.

    In 1900 Charles & Mary Ann, ages 55 & 50, are living at Johnston, RI. According to the census data, they have been married 34 years. The census gives Charles's birthdate as Sep 1844, which may or may not be correct. Their son William, age 21, is with them.

    In the 1920 Federal Census, Charles Whitford is age 78, widowed, and living at Johnston, RI, with his son George and family.

    Charles & Mary Ann are the ancestors of Ray Whitford who in recent years has cleaned up the Whitford Cemetery on Weaver Hill Road next to the old Whitford farm.

    In the 1850 Federal Census, William N. Whitford is age 54, widowed, and living at West Greenwich, RI, with his recently widowed mother, Sarah Whitford, age 79. Also in the household are James A. & Charles C. Whitford, probably sons of William (I have made that assumption here); Sarah M. Gorton, 7; Abby Matteson, 52; Sheffield R. Remington, 37; & Mary Green, 70.

    William married Avis Wilbour Apr 1828, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. Avis was born Abt 1798; died 15 Feb 1842; was buried , Levi Whitford Lot, Weaver Hill Rd., West Greenwich, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    James N. Arnold's "Vital Record of RI" has Ezekiel's date of birth as 3 June 1776, but Alden G. Beaman's "Vital Record of RI, New Series" says 2 Jan 1776. His gravestone has been photographed, in Historical Cemetery #21 off Weaver Hill Rd., West Greenwich. It says he died "aged 74 yrs 2 mos & 13 days." This agrees with the date of January 2.

    Ezekiel's will is summarized in the "Rhode Island Genealogical Register," Vol. 5, #1, p. 71.

    Ezekiel & Sarah lived on Weaver Hill Road in West Greenwich, RI. The house and farm were in the Whitford family for nearly 100 years. The house is still standing and occupied. (See notes for his grandfather Nicholas)

    Ezekiel married Sarah Nichols 24 Nov 1793, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI.     Notes:

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Sarah Whitford is age 75, living at West Greenwich, RI. In her household are: William N. Whitford, 54, her son; James A. Whitford, 14; Charles C. Whitford, 8; Sarah M. Gorton, 7, a granddaughter; Abby Matteson, 52; Sheffield R. Remington, 37; and Mary Green, 70. Are all these individuals related in some way? I would like to find out. Nearby is Cyrus W. Remington, age 10, living with the family of Burrill Matteson. Is he a son of Sheffield, who may be widowed?

    Cyrus later married and had a son named Levi, so perhaps there is a family relationship with Levi Whitford.

    I am going to make an assumption that Sheffield is a younger brother of Sarah's daughter-in-law, Sally Ann (Remington) Whitford. (Although a reasonable assumption, this needs more research to confirm.)
