In the 1850 Federal Census, Oliver 42, and Vincy 49, are living with five of their children at Meriden, New Haven Co., CT. In 1860 they are still there, with four children in the household.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Oliver & his wife Olive are at Meriden, New Haven CT. He is a farm laborer and she is keeping house.

From Kay Larsen, a descendant of Oliver & Vincy: "Oliver and his second wife, Almira, resided for a time in Branford, New Haven Co., CT, and he was still living there when he divorced Almira. At the time of the divorce, she was living in Meriden and apparently remained there until the end of her life. Oliver, at some point, returned to Meriden as he was living there when he married his third wife, Olive, and he shows up in the city directories until the time of his death."

    Notes:

Vincy was of Wallingford, CT, at the time of her marriage. Her surname is sometimes written as Moss, although the spelling on both the marriage record and the tombstone is Morse. It has been supposed that she is a descendant of John Moss, one of the original founders of the New Haven Colony. However, is has not been confirmed. Her death certificate names Cairo, NY, as her birthplace. (source: Kay Larson, a descendant; contact info may be available on request)

The 1860 Federal Census has NY as her state of birth.

  1. 12.  Richmond Remington was born Abt 1775, RI (son of Thomas Remington and Lydia Collins); died 26 May 1823, Coventry, RI; was buried , Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

Richmond was undoubtedly named for Esther Richmond, an ancestor on his mother's side of the family (his mother's maternal grandmother).

In a "fit of insanity" he killed his wife. According to Nailer Tom's diary, Richmond killed his wife then cut his own throat. Supposedly his body was buried in a lone grave near Arkwright in Coventry, off Clark Rd. near cemetery #113 (see RI Cemetery Database, Coventry cemeteries).

Newspaper report: "REMINGTON Richmond, near Arkwright factory, while insane killed his wife with an axe and himself with a butcher's knife; he leaves 7 children to deplore the event." (Patriot of May 31, 1823)

I have estimated the birth years for three of Richmond & Rosy's children, pending further research.

Information on the names of several of the children was shared by Kay Larson, a descendant (contact information available on request). The original source document is located at the University of California Library, Mandeville Special Collections, LaJolla, CA.

Richmond married Rose "Rosy" Wickes 24 Aug 1800, East Greenwich, RI. Rose (daughter of Oliver Wickes and Abigail "Abby" Greene) was born 12 Apr 1781; died 26 May 1823, Coventry, RI; was buried , Peirce-Spencer Lot, Division St., East Greenwich, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Rosy was the first cousin of our ancestor Hiram Greene.

She was killed by her husband in a fit of insanity. Her grave is in East Greenwich Cemetery #72, off Division St. He is said to be buried in an unmarked grave in Coventry.

Rosy's gravestone was erected in 1857 by her daughter Abby W. G. (see cemetery database).
