Paine 15 PA, Harriet L. or S. Paine 10 RI, William S. Wilkinson 27 RI, Laura C. Wilkinson 24 RI, & Anna M. Wilkinson 1 MA.

    In the 1860 Federal Census, they are still at Smithfield. The household consists of: Thomas A. Paine 64 RI, Zilpha Paine 62 RI, Maria E. Barnes 32 RI, Martha A. Paine 24 RI, Harriet S. Paine 20 RI, Elizabeth L. Barnes 8 RI, & George L. Barnes 7 RI.

    In the Federal Census of 1870, they are still at Smithfield: Thomas A. Paine 74 RI, Zilpha R. Paine 72, Ellen Barnes 43 RI, George L. Barnes 18 RI, & Martha A. Paine 35 PA.

    Some information on Thomas & Zilpha came from a descendant, Diana Koch. Additional information from Diana: "Thomas A. Paine's father is Arnold Paine, Jr. who married Anne Aldrich, his grandfather is Arnold Paine who married Judith Staples and his great-grandfather was Benjamin Paine who married Ann Arnold who was one of his 4 wives! Benjamin Paine had about 23 children in all!"

    Thomas married Zilpha Remington Abt 1820. Zilpha (daughter of Caleb Remington and Martha Mowry) was born Abt 1799, RI; died 26 Feb 1885, Woonsocket, Providence Co., RI; was buried , Arnold-Vose Cemetery, East Orchard St., Woonsocket, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    Zilpha's name as well as her husband's came to my attention through a descendant, Diana Koch.

    In the Federal Census of 1880, Zilpha Payne is a widow aged 82, living on South Main Street in Woonsocket, RI. With her are Martha Payne 42 and Ellen Barnes 50, identified as her daughters. They are both dressmakers.

    Martha was appointed executrix of Zilpha's estate. Her will, which names her husband and four living children (and spouses), was witnessed by Thomas Steere, Arlon Mowry, and James I. Hotchkiss.

    Appointed by the Court to take inventory of Zilpha's estate were Arlon Mowry, James I. Hotchkiss, and Albert C. Smith.

    According to the obituary, Zilpha's funeral took place at her late residence, 146 South Main St., Woonsocket. Rev. C. J. White officiated; pallbearers were George C. Wilder, Thomas B. Staples, Amasa Arnold, and Arlon Mowry. (Arlon is a son of Barney Mowry, 1850 census; he has Mowry and Paine ancestry; see Rootsweb's Worldconnect.)

    We have not yet been able to figure out who Caleb's parents were. According to his children's data in the 1880 census, he was born in RI.

    This household apprears to be listed in the 1820 census at Smithfield, RI, with Caleb Remington as head of family; but no male of his age is included in the data. Here are the totals: 2 free white males under 10, 1 free white male 10-16 (Lyman?), 2 free white females under 10 (Martha & Mahala?), 2 free white females 16-26 (Zilpha & Ann Eliza?), and 1 free white female 26-45 (wife Martha). Where is Caleb, and who are the two young males?
