Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Elizabeth Knapp was born 2 Nov 1788, Johnston, Providence Co., RI (daughter of David Knapp, Jr. and Mariam Remington); died 19 Oct 1875, Sycamore, DeKalb Co., IL; was buried , Pleasant Hill Cemetary, Mayfield Township, IL.

Elizabeth married John Hooper Tefft 1 Jan 1809. John was born 25 May 1783, RI; died 5 Oct 1834, Sycamore, DeKalb Co., IL; was buried , Pleasant Hill Cemetary, Mayfield Township, IL. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  David Knapp, Jr. was born Abt 1747 (son of David Knapp and Patience Rhodes); died Between Jun and Sep 1830, Johnston, Providence Co., RI.

    Notes:

This Knapp family needs more research.

The will of David Knap of Johnston was dated 8 Jan 1826 and proved 18 Sep 1830. It mentions his wife Naomy; three sons: Zachariah, Joseph, & Moses; and one daughter, Lydia, who is single.

I am not sure how many times this David Knapp was married -- see all notes for David and his supposed wives. It may be that there were two David Knapp Jrs and that this family data should be divided between the two.

A David Knapp of Warwick, son of David, married Anne Griffin of Exeter, d/o Isaac, at West Greenwich 8 Dec 1768. Could this be the same David Knapp? I have made an assumption here that it is the same David (needs more research to confirm). Therefore, I am not absolutely certain that both of these marriages belong to the same David Knapp. Could Mariam have been his first wife and Anne the second? I have not positively resolved this. It could even have been a second marriage for his father, who may have also been a son of David.

See notes for David's son Remington Knapp. It is confirmed that his mother is Mariam. However, I don't know exactly when Remington was born.

There are two possible children for David & "Anne" Knapp: Moses B. b 2 Sep 1798, and Patience b c1787 (md. Laban Tefft Apr 1807 Johnston). If this is the same couple that were married in 1768, then Mariam must have been his first wife, or else the wife of another David Knapp. Or, Anne could have been a nickname for Mariam, also. As an alternative, David could have had a third wife also named Anne.

In the Federal Census of 1830, a David Knapp is listed at Johnston, RI. In the household are 3 males age 30 < 40, one male 80 < 90, one female 30 < 40, and one female 60 < 70. I have assumed the elderly gentleman age 80 - 90 is this David Knapp. The female is probably his wife "Naomy" mentioned in his will.

The Knapp property was located on Central Avenue in Johnston, west of what is now Route 5/Atwood Ave. Mariam's brother Caleb Remington and family members are buried at "the Knapp place."

Again, please be advised that I am not absolutely sure of these marriages for David, or of the exact birthdates of the children, or of which children belong to which wife. I have pieced David's likely family together as best I can, given the data I have, along with additional data from family trees at Rootsweb's Worldconnect to fill in some gaps.

A question which remains is, is Mariam referred to in some of the vital records as Anne? Moses is identified as son of David & Anne, not David & Mariam.

David married Mariam Remington Abt 1775. Mariam (daughter of Joshua Remington and Elizabeth King) was born Abt 1753; died Abt 1794. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Mariam Remington was born Abt 1753 (daughter of Joshua Remington and Elizabeth King); died Abt 1794.

    Notes:

I have roughly estimated Mariam's birth year. She may have been born later.

It has been said that Mariam & David went to Bartonsville, VT (needs more research).

David's third wife as shown on my family tree -- named Anne -- may actually be Mariam -- possibly a nickname (?). However, his first wife was Anna. One genealogy says that Mariam died c1835 at Johnston. David's will mentions his wife as Naomy.

    Children:
    1. Remington Knapp was born Abt 1785, RI; died Abt 1827, Barton, Orleans Co., VT.
    2. 1. Elizabeth Knapp was born 2 Nov 1788, Johnston, Providence Co., RI; died 19 Oct 1875, Sycamore, DeKalb Co., IL; was buried , Pleasant Hill Cemetary, Mayfield Township, IL.
    3. Patience Knapp was born Abt 1791, Johnston, Providence Co., RI; died 20 Jan 1815, Littleton, Grafton Co., NH.
    4. Joseph Knapp was born Abt 1793.
    5. Zachariah R. Knapp was born Abt 1794, RI; died Bef Jun 1850.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  David Knapp was born Abt 1705.

    Notes:

On 26 Apr 1738, Zachariah Rhodes deeded land in Pawtuxet to his son-in-law, David Knapp of Warwick, and his wife Patience (source: New England Historic Genealogical Register Vol 114 p 282).

David Knap of Gloucestor, cordwainer, bought a mansion house and lot in Warwick bordering other land David owned, 2 MAR 1746/47 Gloucestor, Providence County, RI (source: Warwick Land Records Vol 8 p 85; cited in family tree of Guy/Sam Wallis at Rootsweb's Worldconnect).

David Knap bought land in Warwick adjoining Zachariah Rhodes in 1735. He must have been at least 21 years of age at that time (source: Warwick Land Records Vol 5 p 303; cited in family tree of Guy/Sam Wallis at Rootsweb's Worldconnect).

David Knap is listed in the 1777 Warwick census as being over 60 years of age (source: Rhode Island Military Census 1777; cited in family tree of Sam Wallis at Rootsweb's Worldconnect).

A Nehemiah Knapp died at Pawtuxet at about age 78 in 1815 (b c1737). Could he have been a son of David & Patience?

Also, they may have had a daughter named Hester or Esther, who married at Warwick, 6 Sep 1761, to William France (Warwick Vital Records).

David married Patience Rhodes Abt 1730. Patience (daughter of Zachariah Rhodes) was born Abt 1707. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Patience Rhodes was born Abt 1707 (daughter of Zachariah Rhodes).
    Children:
    1. Mary Knapp was born Abt 1737.
    2. 2. David Knapp, Jr. was born Abt 1747; died Between Jun and Sep 1830, Johnston, Providence Co., RI.

  3. 6.  Joshua Remington was born 1720 (son of John Remington and Mariam Blackington); died 15 Aug 1787; was buried , Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

I have not as yet confirmed that Joshua is John's son, as indicated on the ancestry chart by Boyd Scott Remington. However, it is a reasonable assumption, particularly since Joshua had a daughter named Mariam, probably named after Mariam Sweet.

Joshua became a freeman in 1742, was appointed fence viewer for Johnston in 1759, and highway overseer in 1768. He is listed in the 1777 Military Census at Johnston, RI, along with sons Stephen & Joshua, Jr..

BSR says Joshua's grave is in a cemetery on Central Ave., Johnston, but there is no listing in the RI Cemetery Database. Perhaps there was no stone, or the stone has been taken.

Several cemeteries in Johnston are now labeled as "missing."

Is he the one who built the Remington farmhouse on Central Ave.? According to information on the back of the photo, it was built in 1713.

I have estimated the birth years for some of Joshua's children.

Joshua married Elizabeth King Abt 1747. Elizabeth (daughter of John King) was born 1730; died 18 Apr 1824, RI. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Elizabeth King was born 1730 (daughter of John King); died 18 Apr 1824, RI.

    Notes:

She is probably the Elizabeth Remington listed at Johnston, RI, in the 1800 Federal Census (listed next to Mary King).

Dr. Moses Mowry's Day Book (of Johnston) has the following entry -- I don't know if it refers to this particular Elizabeth:
"Elizabeth Remington was born the 16th day of January AD 1732."

    Children:
    1. Caleb Remington, Sr. was born 16 Sep 1747, Johnston, RI; died Between Feb and Sep 1836, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.
    2. John Remington was born Abt 1749; died Between 8 Jan 1772 and 20 Jun 1785.
    3. Stephen Remington was born Between 1750 and 1751, RI; died 13 Mar 1813, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.
    4. 3. Mariam Remington was born Abt 1753; died Abt 1794.
    5. Mary Remington was born Abt 1755.
    6. Joshua Remington, Jr. was born Abt 1757, RI; died Jun 1796, Little Falls, NY.
    7. Elizabeth "Betsy" Remington was born Abt 17 May 1759; died 19 Oct 1817, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.

    9. Zerviah Remington was born Abt 1764.

Generation: 4

  1. 10.  Zachariah Rhodes was born 1676 (son of Jeremiah Rhodes and Madeline Hawkins); died 13 May 1761.

    Notes:

    Zachariah was of Pawtuxet, RI.

On 26 Apr 1738, Zachariah deeded land in Pawtuxet to his son-in-law, David Knapp of Warwick, and his wife Patience.

On 13 Apr 1741, Zachariah bought 97 acres with dwelling house in Smithfield, from Emanuel Rowse. After that he lived in Smithfield.

On 29 Dec 1741, Zachariah deeded 70 acres in Pawtuxet to John Rhodes of Warwick. The land was situated "easterly on land of my own and partly on land I gave to my son, Charles Rhodes."

On 25 May 1742, Zachariah deeded 97 acres of land in Smithfield to his daughter Elizabeth and her husband, Joseph Carpenter.

On 10 Jan 1761, Zachariah Rhodes of Smithfield and John Tucker of Warwick deeded 4 acres in Pawtuxet to Zachariah Tucker (son of John Tucker and grandson of Zachariah Rhodes).

(source for above notes: New England Historic Genealogical Register Vol 114 p 282)

    Children:
    1. Charles Rhodes was born Abt 1701.
    2. Ruth Rhodes was born Abt 1703.
    3. Elizabeth Rhodes was born Abt 1705.
    4. 5. Patience Rhodes was born Abt 1707.

  2. 12.  John Remington was born Abt 1690, Portsmouth, RI (son of Thomas REMINGTON, I and Mary ALLEN); died 18 Jul 1723, Providence, RI.

    Notes:

The Remington chart by Boyd Scott Remington at RIHSL has the following information for this John Remington:
born 1695 at Warwick, RI, died 8 Jul 1723 at Johnston, RI; freeman 1718; purchased land on Drybrook 1721, retained in family until 1835; married Mariam Sweet; had son Joshua born 1720, died 15 Aug 1787 at Johnston. Mariam (Sweet) Remington later married Ebenezer Greene (b. 8 Feb 1701) on 1 Aug 1724; she married third Edward Capron on 1730.

The chart also shows the son Joshua marrying Elizabeth King, b. 1730, d. 18 Apr 1824. Supposedly they had 7 or 8 children, including a son Caleb and a daughter Mariam.

No documentation is provided. This needs more research. However, I am including BSR's information on John's son Joshua because it is the link to Caleb Remington & Roby Warner, whose information I have researched and confirmed. Note, that Joshua is Caleb's father has not been personally verified by me; or, that Mariam's husband is the John Remington in this family group.

John married Mariam Blackington Abt 1720. Mariam (daughter of Pentecost Blackington and Ann Pederick) was born Abt Mar 1694/95, Marblehead, MA; died Aft 1756. [Group Sheet]

  3. 13.  Mariam Blackington was born Abt Mar 1694/95, Marblehead, MA (daughter of Pentecost Blackington and Ann Pederick); died Aft 1756.

    Notes:

She was the widow of John Remington when she married Ebenezer.

    Children:
    1. 6. Joshua Remington was born 1720; died 15 Aug 1787; was buried , Johnston, RI.

  4. 14.  John King
    Children:
    1. 7. Elizabeth King was born 1730; died 18 Apr 1824, RI.
