  1. 1.  Charles N. Remington was born Apr 1865, NY (son of Seneca H. Remington and Mary F. Leach); died Aft 1 Apr 1930, MA.

    Notes:

In the Federal Cenuses of 1900 and 1910, the family is living at Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA. Charles is a plumber at the gas company.

In the Federal Census of 1920, Charles & Catherine, ages 53 & 54, are still at Cambridge. With them is son Edward 30, and his wife Georgianna B. 38 b Scotland.

They are still all together at Cambridge in 1930, with two grandsons added to the household.

Charles & Catherine's marriage record identifies his parents as Seneca and "Leach" -- his mother's maiden name.

Charles married Catherine Devine 18 Sep 1888, Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA. Catherine was born 1864, Boston, MA; died Aft 1 Apr 1930, MA. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Seneca H. Remington was born Abt 29 Sep 1834, Lansingburgh, Rennselaer Co., NY (son of Norman E. Remington and Emma E. Unknown); died 30 Dec 1888, Boston, Suffolk Co., MA.

    Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1860, Seneca and Mary F. Remington, ages 24 and 18, are living in Lansingburgh, Rensselaer Co., NY. Seneca is a power (?) brush maker.

In the Federal Census of 1870, the family is still at Lansingburgh: Seneca 34 NY, Mary 28 NY, Albert 6 NY, and Chas 4 NY. Seneca is a brush maker and Mary is a dress maker.

In the Federal Census of 1880, "Senica" & Frances Remington, ages 44 & 38, are living on Summer Street in Somerville, Middlesex Co., MA. Children in the household are: Albert 16 and Charles 14. Seneca is still a brush maker; Frances is a dress maker. Perhaps her name is Mary Frances.

I found Seneca's middle initial in Albert's death record.

Seneca died at age 54 y 3 m 1 d. Cause of death -- phthisis, a type of tuberculosis. His death record identifies his parents as Norman (b Lansingburgh) and Emma E. (b Saratoga).

Seneca married Mary F. Leach Bef 1 Jun 1860, NY. Mary was born Abt 1842, Lansingburgh, Rennselaer Co., NY; died 1 Oct 1894, Boston, Suffolk Co., MA. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Mary F. Leach was born Abt 1842, Lansingburgh, Rennselaer Co., NY; died 1 Oct 1894, Boston, Suffolk Co., MA.

    Notes:

According to the death record, Mary died at age 53 of meningitis (prob). Her birthplace is given as Lansingburgh, but the names of her parents are missing.

    Children:
    1. Albert W. Remington was born Abt 1864, Lansingburgh, Rennselaer Co., NY; died 3 Apr 1893, Boston, Suffolk Co., MA.
    2. 1. Charles N. Remington was born Apr 1865, NY; died Aft 1 Apr 1930, MA.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Norman E. Remington was born Abt 1813, Lansingburgh, Rennselaer Co., NY (son of John Remington, Jr. and Unknown Wife); died Between 1870 and 1880.

    Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, the family is at Lansingburgh, Rensselaer, NY: Norman 30 NY, Jane 29 Ireland, Senaca 16 NY, Edward 8 NY, Charles 5 NY, Francis 2 NY; Mary Waterman 18 NY and Permilla Wallace 65 VT. Norman is a brush maker.

In the 1860 Federal Census, the family is still at Lansingburgh: Norman 47 NY, Jane 42 Ireland, Edward 18 NY, Charles 14 NY, Frances 11 NY, and Harriet 5 NY. Norman's occupation is given as gentleman.

In the 1870 Federal Census, the family is still at Lansingburgh: Norman 57 NY, Mary J. 52 Ireland, Harriet 15 NY, and John Cozzens 65 Ireland. Norman is a tax collector.

I found the name of Norman's first wife in Seneca's death record at Boston, MA; Norman's birthplace as Lansingburgh also came from this death record.

Norman married Emma E. Unknown Abt 1833, NY. Emma was born Abt 1813, Saratoga, NY; died Bef 1840. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Emma E. Unknown was born Abt 1813, Saratoga, NY; died Bef 1840.

    Notes:

I have made an assumption that Emma was Norman's first wife, as her name is given as mother in Seneca's death record at Boston, MA.

    Children:
    1. 2. Seneca H. Remington was born Abt 29 Sep 1834, Lansingburgh, Rennselaer Co., NY; died 30 Dec 1888, Boston, Suffolk Co., MA.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  John Remington, Jr. was born Abt 1787, MA or RI (son of John Remington and Mary "Molly" Tillinghast); died Bef 1851.

    Notes:

BSR (Boyd Scott Remington, family researcher and compiler) says John was of Lansingburgh, NY, and had children Norman E., John E., & Martha. I have added these names to John's family, and research is ongoing. See notes for the two sons.

There is a Norman Remington in the census records 1850 - 1870 at Lansingburgh, but there is no indication who his father may have been. I have made an assumption that this Norman is a son of this particular John Remington, as noted by BSR. Later records give Norman's birthplace as Lansingburgh, and his estimated birth year strongly suggests that he belongs to John Remington as shown in the following censuses.

In the Federal Census of 1810, John Remington Jr. is at Cheshire, Berkshire Co., MA. The household consists of 1 free white male under 10, 1 free white male 26 - 44, and 1 free white female 16 - 25. This looks like a young couple with a young son. John Remington (presumably his father and family) is listed in the same town.

The Federal Census of 1820 lists John Remington at Troy, Rensselaer Co., NY. I have made an assumption that it is this particular John Remington, for three reasons -- the above-mentioned BSR genealogy chart; the fact that John's uncle, Jonathan, settled at Lansingburgh (adjoining Troy); and evidence from Norman's and John E.'s families that links them to Troy and Lansingburgh. The household in 1820 consists of 1 free white male <10 (b 1811 - 1820), 1 free white male 10 - 15 (b 1805 - 1810), 1 free white male 26 - 44 (b 1776 - 1794), 3 free white females <10 (b 1811 - 1820), 1 free white female 10 - 15 (b 1805 - 1918), and 1 free white female 26 - 44 (b 1776 - 1794). This data suggests that John and his wife may have had 2 sons and 4 daughters.

Much information on John's son John Edward Remington and his descendants came from Delwin Remington. Other sources are noted.

John married Unknown Wife Abt 1810. [Group Sheet]
