Andrew married Anne "Nancy" Remington Abt 1786, RI. Anne (daughter of Thomas Remington and Freelove Nichols) was born 3 Nov 1761, East Greenwich, Kent County, RI; died 26 Feb 1827; was buried , Knightsville Meeting House Lot, Park Ave., Cranston, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Based on information from a descendant, from published genealogies, and from family names passed down, I have made an assumption that the Nancy Remington b c 1762 at East Greenwich, RI, who married Col. Andrew Potter, is the same individual as this Anne Remington.

Nancy was often a nickname for Ann, Anne, and Anna. See: http://www.cslib.org/nickname.htm -- also -- http://usefulenglish.ru/vocabulary/womens-names -- and elsewhere.

According to her son Rev. Ray Potter's memoirs, Nancy came to the truth of the Gospel at about 1813 or age 52 or thereabouts. She "ever after was a burning and shining light in the church, a mother in Israel, and finished her course with joy."

Also, according to Ray, his parents were poor.

  1. 4.  Robert Potter

    Notes:

    Oliver was "of Scituate."

Some family trees have Oliver as a son of William Potter who married Martha Tillinghast, but that is incorrect. That William died in 1729 and Oliver is not listed among his children.

    Notes from Andy Dorr:

Oliver Potter was a Captain in Col. Seth Warner's regiment, the Green Mountain Boys of the Vermont militia. He died of smallpox in Quebec.
He died without will. His estate was distributed on 21 May 1781 and recorded on page 131 of same source. The settlement of the estate is recorded on page 137 as recorded on 14 Feb 1788. He commanded a company in Col. Seth Warner's Regiment in an expedition sent by the Colonies against Canada.

Probate: 1 Mar 1785, Tinmouth, Rutland Co., VT. 2 He died without will. His estate was distributed
on 21 May 1781 and recorded on page 131 of same source. the settlement of the estate is recorded on
page 137 as recorded on 14 Feb 1788.

Robert married Tabitha Knight 5 Oct 1755, Cranston, Providence Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Tabitha Knight (daughter of Jeremiah Knight and Unknown Wife).

    Notes:

According to the marriage record, Mary was d/o Benjamin Colvin.

    Notes:

Potter Oliver, of Scituate, and Mary Colvin, of Benjamin, of Coventry; m. by Stephen Potter, Justice, Oct. 17, 1757. (Marriage Vol. 1 : Pg. 127 Coventry, RI)

    Children:
    1. 2. Andrew Potter was born Abt. 1763; died 21 Mar 1829, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Knightsville Meeting House Lot, Park Ave., Cranston, RI.

  3. 6.  Thomas Remington was born Abt 1734 (son of Daniel Remington, Sr. and Ann Gorton); died Bef 20 Dec 1789.

    Notes:

The marriage record names him as Thomas Remington, of Daniel of Warwick. This is the most likely family group in which to place him. Several genealogists have done so, but realize it is an assumption or "educated guess." His birth is not found in the Warwick vital records along with Samuel, Mary, & Daniel.

He left his wife Freelove around Jan 1765, and lived "in adultery." She petitioned for divorce in 1771, and it was granted. Did Thomas have children by another woman, or have a second marriage? See notes for Freelove.

His daughter's marriage record mentions her father Thomas, dec'd; thus I have entered his date of death as bef. 20 Dec 1789.

Thomas married Freelove Nichols 16 Aug 1759, East Greenwich, RI. Freelove (daughter of Joseph Nichols and Freelove Matteson) was born 7 Aug 1740; died Aft Apr 1771. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Freelove Nichols was born 7 Aug 1740 (daughter of Joseph Nichols and Freelove Matteson); died Aft Apr 1771.

    Notes:

"In April 1771 Freelove Remington petitioned for divorce from Thomas Remington, 'late of Warwick, mariner.' She told how he changed after marriage: 'the fatal Knot being Ti'd the Smilling Affability of the Lover and Friend was converted into the Stern Severity of a Tyrant' and he treated her with 'implacable Fury' . . . She alleged that he had abandoned her in Jan 1765 and ever after lived in adultery. The petition was granted." (source: Elder John Gorton and the Six Principle Baptist Church of East Greenwich, RI; by Cherry Fletcher Bamberg; RI Genealogical Society 2001; p. 208)

    Notes:

The marriage registration in East Greenwich vital records says the officiant was Giles Peirce, Justice. However, whoever recorded it may have made an error, since the marriage is in Elder Gorton's personal journal, where the entry states that he married them. The date in East Greenwich VRs is 23 Aug 1759.

Unfortunately this marriage was not a success. "In April 1771 Freelove Remington petitioned for divorce from Thomas Remington, 'late of Warwick, mariner.' She told how he changed after marriage: ' . . . the fatal Knot being Ti'd the Smilling Affability of the Lover and Friend was converted into the Stern Severity of a Tyrant' and he treated her with 'implacable Fury' (Kent County Superior Court, April 1771, Judicial Archives at Pawtucket, RI). She alleged that he abandoned her in Jan. 1765 and ever after lived in adultery. The petition was granted" (quoted from "Elder John Gorton and the Six-Principle Baptist Church of East Greenwich, RI" by Cherry Fletcher Bamberg, p. 208).

    Children:
    1. 3. Anne "Nancy" Remington was born 3 Nov 1761, East Greenwich, Kent County, RI; died 26 Feb 1827; was buried , Knightsville Meeting House Lot, Park Ave., Cranston, RI.
    2. Joseph Nichols Remington was born 4 Jan 1764, East Greenwich, RI; died 23 Jul 1845, Groton Twp., Erie County, OH.
    3. Freelove Remington was born Abt 1765; died 26 Aug 1847; was buried , Providence, RI.

  3. 12.  Daniel Remington, Sr. was born Abt 1692, Portsmouth or Warwick, RI (son of Thomas REMINGTON, I and Mary ALLEN); died Abt 16 Sep 1786, Warwick, RI; was buried 18 Sep 1786, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

Daniel Remington was ensign of Militia, 2nd Company for Warwick, in 1730 - 1733. Very likely it was this Daniel.

Warwick Land Evidence, dated 22 Nov 1736: Stephen Remington of Providence, mariner, sold to Jonathan Remington of East Greenwich, mariner, one lot in Chippowinoxit, Warwick, Lot #16, one and one-half acres; signed by Stephen Remington, witnessed by Dan Remington. (These three were brothers.)

He is probably the Daniel Remington listed for Warwick in the 1774 RI Census.

In the book "Remington Family" Martha A. Benns has Daniel's date of birth as 18 October 1681, but this is too early because he is said to be under 21 in his father's will dated 1710. Cherry Fletcher Bamberg has the year as 1689.

Daniel married Ann Gorton 16 Feb 1722/23, Warwick, RI. Ann (daughter of Samuel Gorton and Elizabeth Collins) was born 19 Feb 1695/96, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

  5. 14.  Joseph Nichols died Bef Aug 1759, East Greenwich, RI.

    Notes:

He was probably the Joseph Nichols whose will was dated 13 Oct 1757, proved 15 Nov 1757, at East Greenwich. The will mentions his wife Freelove Nichols, and two daughters, Freelove Nichols and Hannah Hill.

Joseph — Freelove Matteson. [Group Sheet]
