Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Joseph Remington was born 27 Oct 1785, Warwick, RI (son of Thomas Remington, Jr. and Mary Wood); died Abt 1835.

    Notes:

I don't know for sure if this Joseph belongs in this family group, but the birth record identifies him as Joseph Remington, of Thomas. I have checked the family groups of the other families in Warwick, as well as the 1790 census for each of them, and Joseph fits best here.

An inventory of the estate of Joseph Remington of Warwick is listed in the probate records, viewable at ancestry.com, 13 Apr 1835; Thomas Holden, his guardian.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Thomas Remington, Jr. was born Between 1745 and 1758 (son of Thomas Remington, Sr. and Mary Collins); died 19 Jan 1831.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give source credit to Lois Sorensen, Remington family researcher and compiler, and to other sources as noted herein.)

I have tentatively determined this Thomas Remington's parentage from his Revolutionary War pension file, in which his sister Mary Bennett gives a sworn testimony. I have made an assumption that his sister Mary Bennett, is the same Mary as the daughter of Thomas & Mary (Collins) Remington.

It is possible that Mary (Remington) Bennett and her brother Thomas, Jr., were children of a different Thomas Remington; however, given their ages and locality, this family is the most likely. No other Thomas Remington of record has proved to be a possibility, although there were other Thomas Remingtons born in Rhode Island of whom nothing else is known.

According to his pension file data at the National Archives in Waltham (George Sermuksnis, Archives Technician), Thomas was residing at Providence when he received his pension. He lived in Warwick during the the Revolutionary War.

Please note that some online genealogies have shown Mary Wood as a second wife for the Thomas Remington, Jr., who is the son of Thomas & Abigail (Eldred) Remington, of Cowesett, Warwick, RI. However, that is incorrect, as that Thomas has a different date of death: 6 Aug 1817. His grave is in Coventry, RI. Also, there is no William or Charles among their known children.

From "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files," Vol. III: N - Z, abstracted by Virgil D. White, The National Historical Publishing Co., Waynesboro, TN, 1992, p. 2849, summary of his pension file:

"REMINGTON Thomas, Mary, RI Line, W13847, sol was a son of Thomas Remington & he m Mary daughter or [sic] William Wood on 7 Jun 1778 at Warwick RI, sol d 19 Jan 1831, wid appl 29 Octg [sic] 1836 at Cranston RI & she d there 29 Mar 1837 & the bal due wid at her death was paid to the following children; Charles, Daniel & William Remington her only surviving children."

Although Thomas was a Revolutionary War Veteran and his wife Mary received his pension, it is not known where either of them is buried.

The Federal Census of 1790 lists 4 Thomas Remingtons in Warwick. I am assuming that one of these is this particular Thomas, likely the one designated as Thomas Remington, Jr. and living near another Thomas Remington. The household shows 5 free white males under age 16, 1 free white male 16 and over, and 3 free white females. This suggests that there may have been 5 sons and 2 daughters in the family at that time.

"Cousin Thomas Remington Jr. of Coventry" is named as executor in the 1805 will of Thomas Collins of Foster, yeoman, who died about Mar 1818 when the will was proved.

There may have been a son named Henry. The 1810 census shows a Charles Remington and a Henry Remington listed next to each other. Both Charles and William included the name Henry among their children.

The inventory of the estate of Thomas Remington was taken between June and August 1831. Charles Remington was the Administrator, appraisers were Christopher Spencer, Edmund Burke, and George Carder. The image of the inventory, totalling $91.11, is viewable at ancestry.com. Two of the individuals listed as having claims are William and Joseph Remington.

Thomas married Mary Wood 7 Jun 1778, Warwick, RI. Mary (daughter of William Wood) was born Abt 1758; died 29 Mar 1837, Cranston, Providence Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Mary Wood was born Abt 1758 (daughter of William Wood); died 29 Mar 1837, Cranston, Providence Co., RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give source credit to Lois Sorensen, Remington family researcher and compiler, and to other sources as noted herein.)

On 29 Oct 1836, Mary Remington appeared at the Court of Common Pleas, Providence County, to testify concerning her husband's military service. On that date Mary was a resident of Cranston, and was a widow age 78.

According to the Revolutionary War Pension File, this couple had three children still living in March 1837: Charles, Daniel, & William. Based on that information, I have included those names in this family group, and have pieced together data as best as I can to determine who these individuals were. This family is still in ongoing research; it is possible that there were additional children.

The RI Death Index identifies the parents of Charles Remington as Thomas & Mary. I am not absolutely sure that his parents were the Thomas Remington, Jr., & Mary Wood who were married in Warwick in 1778, but it seems to be a reasonable assumption, based on Thomas's pension file which mentions a son Charles, the location, and the time frame. So, for the time being, until research shows otherwise, I am including Mary's maiden name as Wood (see marriage record and the same date in the pension file), and am entering their marriage data as such, with this particular Charles as a son.

The marriage record at Warwick identifes Mary Wood as daughter of William.

She may have been a sister of Olney Wood who married Rosanna Remington. Both Olney and Mary were children of a William Wood.

In the 1830 census, Sally Ann Wood, widow of Olney Wood, and two William Woods are living near Thomas & Patience Remington and family.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Thomas Remington, Sr. was born 24 Feb 1718/19, Warwick, RI (son of Joseph Remington, I and Margaret Burlingame); died Aft 1774.

    Notes:

Thomas and his heirs received land in Scituate from his father Joseph, 15 March 1743 (Scituate Land Evidence, Vol. 3, p. 27). This was the same land that Joseph had bought in 1731.

There is a record at Scituate dated 28 Jul 1759 of Thomas, resident of Scituate, and his family moving to Portsmouth, RI. (source Barbara Chase)

On 21 Feb 1761, Thomas Remington of Portsmouth sold land and house in Scituate to George Roberts of Warwick. (Sc. Land Ev. Bk 5 p. 319; source Barbara Chase)

He may be the Thomas Remington, son of Joseph, listed at Warwick in the 1774 RI Census. If so, this would mean that he moved from Portsmouth to Warwick.

He may also be one of the 4 Thomas Remingtons listed in the 1790 census at Warwick.

The births of five of Thomas & Mary's children are recorded at Scituate. However, they may have been born elsewhere and recorded there after the family moved to Scituate.

Thomas married Mary Collins 23 Nov 1740, Providence, RI. Mary (daughter of Eliezar Collins, Sr. and Elizabeth Unknown) was born Abt 1720; died Aft 29 Jul 1754. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Mary Collins was born Abt 1720 (daughter of Eliezar Collins, Sr. and Elizabeth Unknown); died Aft 29 Jul 1754.

    Notes:

She probably is a daughter of Elisha Collins; see his Scituate will dated 31 Oct 1778, proved 3 Dec 1778.

    Notes:

I am making the assumption that the Thomas and Mary whose marriage is recorded in Scituate, belongs to this family group, since this Thomas had a brother Lippitt, whose marriage was also recorded in the same book. The notation implies that they were married in Providence, but that the marriage was recorded in Scituate several years later. The Scituate record says 20 Nov.

Providence records this marriage: Thomas, of Providence, and Mary Collins, of Scituate, m. by William Burton, Justice, Nov. 23, 1740. (see Arnold's VRs for Providence - Marriages p. 157)

REMINGTON Thomas, and Mary Collins, of Eliza; m. by William Burton, Justice, Nov. 20, 1740 (Scituate VRs).

He may have been the Thomas Remington who later moved to Portsmouth (needs more research); see this note from Barbara Chase: "Scituate, RI Probate Records; Vol. 1; p. 409 - 28 Jul 1759 - Certificate to Thomas Remington who has 'moved with his family to Portsmouth' and acknowledged that he, his wife, and children were proper inhabitants of the town of Scituate."

    Children:
    1. Margret Remington was born 18 May 1742, RI.
    2. Jonathan Remington was born 28 Dec 1743, RI; died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI.
    3. 2. Thomas Remington, Jr. was born Between 1745 and 1758; died 19 Jan 1831.
    4. Prudence Remington was born 16 Mar 1748/49, RI; died 27 Sep 1816, RI; was buried , Rev. Samuel Littlefield Lot, Warwick, RI.

    7. John Remington was born 29 Jul 1754, RI.

  3. 6.  William Wood was born Between 1715 and 1735.
    Children:
    1. 3. Mary Wood was born Abt 1758; died 29 Mar 1837, Cranston, Providence Co., RI.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Joseph Remington, I was born Abt 1694, Portsmouth or Warwick, RI (son of Thomas REMINGTON, I and Mary ALLEN); died 22 Sep 1763, Cranston, RI.

    Notes:

A Scituate deed records a land transaction between James Tucker and Joseph Remington, both of Warwick, dated 15 Oct 1731. Mr. Tucker sold Mr. Remington land in Scituate on the banks of the Pawtuxet River, bounded by Othniel Gorton's land. Witnesses were Ezekiel Warner and Samuel Barton, and the deed was recorded 3 Jan 1732. Interestingly, Othniel's wife was Mercy Burlingame, aunt to Margaret Burlingame, Joseph Remington's wife. (Scituate Deeds, Births, & Marriages, Vol. 1, p. 48)

Presumably the family moved from Warwick to Scituate around this time.

On 15 March 1743, Joseph Remington, of Providence, deeded to his son Thomas Remington, of Scituate, and his heirs, a parcel of land in Scituate bounded by the Seven Mile Line, westerly northwesterly and northeasterly of the Pawtuxet River, northeasterly of Edward Potter's land.

Joseph's will mentions his wife Margarett; sons Thomas, Joseph, & Lippitt; and daughter Martha Collins. If Stephen and Margaret were actually his children, they must have died before the date of his will. Daughter Margaret may have been the Margaret Remington who married Ebenezer Allin on 21 May 1761 (this needs more research to confirm).

From Barbara Chase: "Date of death -- Cranston, RI Town Council Bk 1; p. 170 'Joseph Remington of Cranston . . . yeoman who departed this Life on 22nd Day of September AD 1763 . . . ' His wife Margaret as sole executrix of his LWT was granted letters of administration . . . If you follow the land records you can easily place Joseph & Margaret Remington and most of their children in what is now the southeast corner of Scituate and the southwest corner of Cranston. They are buried there. Their lands were on both sides of Seven Mile Rd. (then portion of the original 17th century Seven Mile Line) that led to records in both towns."

Joseph married Margaret Burlingame 29 Sep 1717, Warwick, RI. Margaret (daughter of Thomas Burlingame and Martha Lippitt) was born 1696, Cranston, RI; died Aft 25 Jan 1771. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Margaret Burlingame was born 1696, Cranston, RI (daughter of Thomas Burlingame and Martha Lippitt); died Aft 25 Jan 1771.

    Notes:

Margaret Remington is mentioned in the 6 Mar 1719 will of her grandmother, Mary Lippitt, widow of Moses. She is also mentioned in the 5 June 1756 will of her father Thomas.

From Barbara Chase: Margaret was still living as of 25 Jan 1771 - Joseph Remington of Scituate to Thomas Potter of Cranston; 15A in town of Cranston; bd'd on W by Christopher Lippitt and N by Furnace Rd.; Margaret Remington, mother of sd Joseph releases rights . . . (Cranston, RI Dd Bk 2; p. 186).

    Children:
    1. 4. Thomas Remington, Sr. was born 24 Feb 1718/19, Warwick, RI; died Aft 1774.
    2. Joseph Remington, II was born 21 Jan 1720/21, Warwick, RI; died 6 Jul 1800, Scituate, RI.
    3. Martha Remington was born 18 Mar 1724/25, Warwick, RI.
    4. Lippitt Remington was born 17 Dec 1729, Warwick, RI.
    5. Stephen Remington was born 25 Jan 1733/34, Providence, RI; died Bef 28 Jun 1756.
    6. Margaret Remington was born 20 Feb 1736/37, Providence, RI; died Bef 28 Jun 1756.

  3. 10.  Eliezar Collins, Sr. was born 17 Nov 1693, Warwick, Kent Co., RI (son of Thomas Collins and Abigail House); died Nov 1778, Scituate, RI.

    Notes:

His will mentions wife Elizabeth; sons Elizur Jr., & William; daughters Mary Remington & Elizabeth Randall; granddaughters Margaret Allen, Elizabeth Randall, Dorcas Remington, & Elizabeth Collins.

There is also a reference in Arnold's "Vital Record of RI" to Elias Collins, of Elias. Is Elias the same individual as Elisha, Elizur, or Eliza?

Eliezar married Elizabeth Unknown Abt 1717. Elizabeth was born Abt 1695; died Aft 31 Oct 1778. [Group Sheet]

  4. 11.  Elizabeth Unknown was born Abt 1695; died Aft 31 Oct 1778.
