Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Oliver Allen was born Abt 1851, NY (son of Oliver Allen, Jr. and Catharine Huchins Seaman).

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Oliver Allen, Jr.Oliver Allen, Jr. was born Sep 1823, Mumford, Monroe Co., NY (son of Oliver Allen, Sr. and Jerusha Hopkins Remington); died 1903.

    Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1850, Oliver and wife Catharine, ages 26 & 24, are living at Wheatland, Monroe Co., NY, with his mother Jerusha. They have an infant daughter, Frances C. age 1.

In the Federal Census of 1860 they are still at Wheatland. There are several more individuals in the household, including a total of 5 children, and also J. H. Allen age 60 VT, Oliver's mother.

In the 1892 NY State Census they are still at Wheatland. Oliver is 68 and Catherine is 64.

In 1900 they are at Mumford, NY.

There is a discrepancy in the birthdates for Oliver. Another source has it as 19 April 1827. The 1823 date seems to agree more with his age as given in the censuses.

    by William F. Peck (1895)
    Part III, p. 80 - 81
"Allen, Oliver, proprietor of the well known O-At-Ka woolen mill, was born in September, 1823, at Mumford, Monroe county, N. Y., where he still resides. His father was Oliver Allen 1st, born in Pittsfield, Mass., in 1798, and married to Jerusha Hopkins Remington, in 1822. Their two children are the present Oliver, sr., and Elizabeth M., wife of John R. Olmsted of Le Roy, N. Y. The father of Oliver Allen 1st was Rufus Allen of Pittsfield, and his mother was Emilicent Seymour of Canandaigua, N. Y. Miss Remington was the daughter of Dr. Silas Remington of Rupert, Vt., and Betsey Rose Gere Remington of Chesterfield, Conn. The first Oliver early learned the trade of wool-carding and cloth-dressing, and came to Mumford in 1821, establishing and continuing that business for eight years. In 1829 they purchased and located themselves upon the present site of the O-At-Ka Mill, under the firm name of Remington and Allen. This partnership existed until 1841, when Allen bought the Remington interest and enlarged the previous capacity of the mill, putting in power looms and additional machinery for manufacturing various qualities of woolen goods. About the same time there was added to this property the neighboring custom and flouring mill, previously owned by Donald McKenzie. In 1844, having taken his son into partnership, the firm became Oliver Allen &, which remained unchanged until the death of the senior partner in 1848. In 1872 Oliver 3d came into the business, making the firm name for the second time Oliver Allen and Son. Mr. Allen has been identified with church, school and other interests, and was made presiding officer of the centennial celebration of the town of Wheatland, which occurred September 3,1889. He was the chief promoter of the Rochester and State Line Railway and after years of incessant labor the road became an actual fact, Mr. Allen driving the last spike at its completion to Salamanca. He was made vice-president when the company was first organized, and afterward president, which office he held until years after the road was finished. He was one of the incorporators of the Merchant's Savings Bank of Rochester, and is at present the oldest trustee of that institution; and also for many years a director in the Flour City National Bank of the same city. Mr. Allen was married in 1848 to Miss Catharine H. Seaman, daughter of Leonard Lewis and Mahala Doughty Seaman of Palmyra, N. Y. Their children are Frances S.; Oliver jr., of the home firm; Leonard L., of Allen Bro's flannel and hosiery mill, Rochester; Katharine E.; Lillian, deceased; Ethan, of the New York branch office of Allen Bros.; Harry, in charge of Chicago office; Charles Ernest, deceased."

Oliver married Catharine Huchins Seaman Abt 1848. Catharine (daughter of Leonard Lewis Seaman and Mahala Doughty) was born Abt 1826, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1900. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Catharine Huchins Seaman was born Abt 1826, NY (daughter of Leonard Lewis Seaman and Mahala Doughty); died Aft 1 Jun 1900.

    Notes:

Her date of birth is given as Oct 1835 in the 1900 census, but that must be incorrect as she was probably not married at age 14.

The 1900 census data says that Catharine has had 8 children 6 of whom still are living.

    Children:
    1. Frances C. Allen was born Abt 1849, NY.
    2. 1. Oliver Allen was born Abt 1851, NY.
    3. Leonard Lewis Allen was born Abt 1855, NY.
    4. Catharine "Kate" Elizabeth Allen was born Abt 1857, NY.

  1. 4.  Oliver Allen, Sr. was born 4 Jan 1798, Pittsfield, MA (son of Rufus Allen and Emilicent Seymour); died 10 Nov 1848; was buried , Machpelah Cemetery, LeRoy, Genesee Co., NY.

    Notes:

Some information on Jerusha and her husband Oliver Allen came in an email from Wilfred Vasile, dated 28 Mar 2012. He references LeRoy (NY) Historical Society records, "Seymour Genealogy" p 89.

    See notes for Jerusha.

Oliver married Jerusha Hopkins Remington 5 Dec 1822. Jerusha (daughter of Silas Remington, Sr. and Betsey Ross Geer) was born Abt 1801, VT; died 30 Dec 1878; was buried , Machpelah Cemetery, LeRoy, Genesee Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Jerusha Hopkins RemingtonJerusha Hopkins Remington was born Abt 1801, VT (daughter of Silas Remington, Sr. and Betsey Ross Geer); died 30 Dec 1878; was buried , Machpelah Cemetery, LeRoy, Genesee Co., NY.

    Notes:

Some information on Jerusha and her husband Oliver Allen came in an email from Wilfred Vasile, dated 28 Mar 2012. He references LeRoy (NY) Historical Society records, "Seymour Genealogy" p 89. Additional information came from the 1850 census, where she is living next to Silas Remington; also from "Wheatland, Monroe County, New York: a brief sketch of its history" by George Engs Slocum, page 97 (Google Books online). With the census and the information from the book about Monroe County, I was able to determine that Jerusha is a sister of Silas and William.

In the Federal Census of 1850, Jerusha Allen is age 49 VT, living at Wheatland, Monroe Co., NY. With her are daughter Elizabeth 25 NY, and son Oliver 26 NY, along with his wife Catharine 24 NY and their daughter Frances C. 1 NY. They are living/listed next to Silas Remington and family. I am assuming that Jerusha (Remington) Allen is his sister, based on the above-mentioned historical book, along with her age and birthplace as given in the census.

In the Federal Census of 1860, she is J. H. Allen 60 VT (a domestic), living with her son Oliver and his family, at Wheatland, NY.

Jerusha's middle initial is given as H in at least one census, and in the above-mentioned book by Slocum. Her middle name is given as Hopkins in "Landmarks of Monroe County, NY" by William F. Peck (1895), Part III, p. 80 - 81.

    Children:

    Children:
    1. 4. Oliver Allen, Sr. was born 4 Jan 1798, Pittsfield, MA; died 10 Nov 1848; was buried , Machpelah Cemetery, LeRoy, Genesee Co., NY.

  3. 10.  Silas Remington, Sr. was born 25 Feb 1776, Suffield, Hartford, CT (son of Thomas Remington and Mary Remington); died 29 Jun 1818, Canandaigua, Ontario Co., NY; was buried , Hunn Memorial Cemetery, Canandaigua, NY.

    Notes:

On 28 Nov 1793, John Kittridge of Chesterfield, MA, was appointed guardian of Silas Remington, aged 17 years, of Suffield, CT. Silas is probably the Silas Remmington in the 1800 census at Rupert, VT, along with his brother Thomas. Both of these brothers had sons named Silas, born in VT.

Vermont Gazette, 10 February 1806; Bennington, Vermont: "Silas Remington of Reupert [sic.], is now confined to Bennington jail, on execution of a judgement in favor of Samuel Dinsmer of Rupert. He is to show cause why petitioner should not be allowed to take the oath prescribed by law for the relief of prisoners."

Federal Census of 1810 lists Silas Remington at Rupert, along with Thomas.

From "STATE OF VERMONT ROSTER OF SOLDIERS IN THE WAR OF 1812-14," prepared and published under the direction of Herbert T. Johnson, 1933, page 351: "Silas Remington, Surgeon's Mate, Rupert, Bennington Co., Vt. Served in Capt. Hopkins' Company, Col. Martindale's Regt. Detached Militia in U.S. service 2 months and 13 days, 1812. Served from June 15, 1814 to June 19, 1815 in Capt. Taylor's Company, 30th Inf. Pension Certificate of widow, Margaret, No. 39717."

Is Betsey the same wife as Margaret? See notes for Betsey.

Silas married Betsey Ross Geer Abt Dec 1793. Betsey (daughter of Elijah Geer and Elizabeth Margaret Ross) was born 7 Sep 1774, NY; died 1863, NY. [Group Sheet]

  4. 11.  Betsey Ross Geer was born 7 Sep 1774, NY (daughter of Elijah Geer and Elizabeth Margaret Ross); died 1863, NY.

    Notes:

Her surname may have been Greer. Elsewhere her middle name is given as Rose. The name of her mother as Elizabeth Margaret Ross came from Tom Lavery's data at Rootsweb's Worldconnect.

See notes for Silas, in which pension mentions wife as Margaret.

Paul Remington's online genealogy says this couple had only two daughters.

Betsey is said to be of Chesterfield, CT, in "Landmarks of Monroe County, NY" by William F. Peck (1895), Part III, p. 80 - 81.

    Children:
    1. William R. Remington was born 25 Dec 1794, VT; died 1869, Mumford, Monroe Co., NY; was buried , Mumford Rural Cemetery, Monroe Co., NY.
