Rhodes Greene Allen

Notes:

Apparently there were two individuals of this exact same name, as two marriages were reported for Rhodes Greene Allen in the year 1811 -- one in March (to Rebecca Bowen) and one in September (to Sarah P. Jones). These cannot be marriages of the same man because the death of Rebecca C. Allen, wife of Rhodes, was reported in 1822.

In the Federal Census of 1850, the family is at Providence, RI, as follows: Rhodes Allen 59, Mary Ann 49, Richmond 18, Edward 15, Thomas 7, Mary 16, Caroline 10, Charles 29, John 37, & Rhodes 34 (all born RI).

In the Federal Census of 1870, Rhodes is age 74, living with son George Allen and family at Providence.

In the Federal Census of 1880, Rhodes Allen is age 87, a rope maker, living at Providence. With him are son George W. L. (a moulder) and daughter-in-law Matilda (sews carpets).

His grave is supposedly at the North Burial Ground in Providence, but I have not personally seen it:

I have not viewed the death record or the RI Death Index listing for Rhodes, but I hope this would confirm the identity of his parents.

Joshua was born at Prudence Island, according to an SAR application for Charles Edwin Allen.

Joshua married Waite Greene 1790. Waite (daughter of Caleb Greene and Mary Lippitt) was born 15 Sep 1768; died 1793. [Group Sheet]

The births of all these children born to Thomas & Rebecca were registered at Portsmouth. I don't know for sure that they belong to this particular Thomas, but the names offer some evidence of family connection.

According to a genealogy at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, this William Allen married Freelove Tillinghast. He is of the right age and location to have married her, but I have not yet found any documentation. Wayne G. Tillinghast in his book "The Tillinghasts in America" disputes that, offering evidence that William's wife could not have been Freelove Tillinghast -- at least not the daughter of Joseph Tillinghast.

I suspect that Freelove Allen who married William Remington is a daughter of William & Freelove Allen.

For the time being, I have placed Freelove Allen as a daughter in this family group, pending further research to confirm. These are assumptions only, based on incomplete evidence.

According to research of Wayne G. Tillinghast, William & Freelove Allen were admitted to membership in the Second Baptist Church of Newport on 4 March 1729 ("The Tillinghasts in America, The First Four Generations," RIGS 2006 p 150).

William married Freelove Unknown Abt 1714. Freelove was born Abt 1695; died 1767. [Group Sheet]

It has been suggested that this Freelove may have been Freelove Tillinghast. However, Wayne G. Tillinghast in his book "The Tillinghasts in America" disputes that, offering evidence that William's wife could not have been Freelove Tillinghast -- at least not the daughter of Joseph Tillinghast. See page 150, where he notes that William & Freelove Allen were admitted to membership in the Second Baptist Church at Newport on 4 March 1729.

She also is identified as Freelove Tillinghast in the RI Genealogical Register Vol. 6 No. 4 p. 241, "Descendants of John Maccoone." The compiler of this article did not note his source, which may have been DeVere Allen's work on the Allens of Prudence Island.
