  1. 1.  Ruth Remington was born Abt 1813 (daughter of Peleg Remington and Susan Briggs); died 3 Oct 1876, Providence, RI.

Ruth — Aldrich Payne. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Peleg Remington was born Abt 1775 (son of Jonathan Remington and Mary Havens); died 16 Dec 1847; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

Please note that I am not sure that Peleg belongs to these parents. I am including him here based on certain evidence including census, location, and age. See notes for Susan Briggs.

In the 1820 Federal Census, Peleg is listed at Warwick: 2 FWM <10, 1 FWM >45, 1 FWF <10, 3 FWF 10-15, 1 FWF 26-44. This suggests that Peleg and Susan had 4 daughters and 2 sons.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Susan Remington is living at Warwick, listed next to -- or possibly with -- Thomas & Almira Remington. This suggests a family relationship. Thomas was s/o Russell Remington.

I have made a working assumption that Susan Remington is Thomas's aunt by marriage to his uncle Peleg.

There may be another son of Peleg and Susan in this family: William H. Remington who married Sarah F. Hazard at Warwick 25 July 1849. (needs more research to confirm -- yes, this has been confirmed)

Peleg's will was dated Nov 1847, proved 14 Feb 1848 at Warwick. It mentions wife Susan and daughter Phebe Ann Arnold.

DAR records show Susan Briggs as Peleg's second wife. I don't know that this is accurate. The DAR file shows "Nancy" as his first wife. I believe there was an earlier Peleg Remington who had a wife named Nancy/Anstice. The two could have been confused by researchers, but then again there could have been two Pelegs with wives named Nancy. However, another thought is that this Peleg's first wife could have been Lydia Rhodes, Phebe Field, or Amy Fifield. I have four possible wives for Peleg Remington II, but that could certainly be incorrect. See notes for Peleg Remington II b 1764.

DAR records show this Peleg as b c1757/58, but the RI Cemetery Database has c1775.

Peleg married Susan Briggs 5 Feb 1807, Warwick, RI. Susan was born Abt 1778; died 15 Mar 1861; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Susan Briggs was born Abt 1778; died 15 Mar 1861; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Susan Remington is age 73, living at Warwick. With her are Solomon 32 and Phebe Ann Madison 40. Phebe may be Susan's daughter; if so, it is a second marriage for her. Her first marriage was to a Mr. Arnold, as she is mentioned as Phebe Ann Arnold in Peleg's will dated Nov 1847 at Warwick.

In the census, they are listed next to -- and are probably living next to -- Thomas and Almira (Dyer) Remington, both age 42, and their 6 children. This suggests that Susan may be closely related to Thomas -- although is not proof, since there were a lot of Remingtons around at that time.

If it is true that there is a close family relationship, I am guessing that Susan could be Thomas's aunt (by marriage), meaning that her husband Peleg was possibly a brother to Thomas's father, Russell Remington. Therefore, I am placing Peleg on this family tree, with the qualifier that more research is needed to confirm the ancestry of Peleg.

I have made a working assumption that Susan Remington is Thomas's aunt by marriage to his uncle Peleg.

Rootsweb's Worldconnect has these parents for Susan (Susannah):
    Father: Richard Briggs b: 26 NOV 1737
Mother: Phebe Place b: ABT 1738 in North Kingstown, RI
First source given: The American Genealogist p 38:51
Second source given: Maerston Watson, "Royal Families Americans of Royal and Noble Ancestry" Volume Two
Publication: Baltimore MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc.
Third source given: Reverend Francis Marbury and Five Generations of His Descendants Through Anne (Marbury) Hutchinson and Katherine (Marbury) Scott), pages 199-207

This sounds plausible because Richard's grandmother was Susannah Spencer, so he could have named a daughter Susannah after her. Also, Peleg and Susan had a daughter named Phebe, who may have been named after Susan's mother Phebe Place.

I need to check the RI Death Index to see if Susan's parents are named.

    Children:

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Jonathan Remington was born 28 Dec 1743, RI (son of Thomas Remington, Sr. and Mary Collins); died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI.

    Notes:

Scituate Land Evidence Vol. 8 p. 39 records a transaction in which Jonathan Remington received a deed on 11 April 1785 from Christopher and Wait Lippitt. Probably it refers to this Jonathan. Since his great-grandmother was Martha Lippitt, probably Christopher was a relative.

The following may pertain to this Jonathan:

In the 1800 Federal Census, he is listed at Scituate as Jonathan Remmington (same page as Joseph Remington), with a household as follows: 1 FWM 45+, 2 FWF <10, 1 FWF 10-15, 1 FWF 26-44, and 1 FWF 45+.

In 1810 he is listed at Scituate as Johnathan Remington, but the household consists of just an adult male and an adult female.

On 20 March 1776, Elisha & Desire Clark of North Kingstown purchased land in Exeter from Jonathan Remington of Warwick, yeoman. Was it this Jonathan? If so, he would have been about 33. But see other Jonathan Remingtons on this tree.

Boyd Scott Remington shows two marriages for him, so I am entering them, although no sources are noted (needs further research).

Jonathan married Mary Havens 15 Jun 1769, Warwick, RI. Mary (daughter of Nathaniel Havens) was born Abt 1747, RI; died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Mary Havens was born Abt 1747, RI (daughter of Nathaniel Havens); died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI.

    Notes:

Mary was "of Nathaniel, of North Kingstown."

I have made an assumption that she is the wife implied in the 1800 and 1810 censuses.

    2. Alta Mary Remington was born 1772, Scituate, RI.
    3. 2. Peleg Remington was born Abt 1775; died 16 Dec 1847; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI.
    4. Russell Remington was born 12 Jul 1776; died 26 Jul 1817; was buried , Historical Cemetery 540 "lost, " Remington Lot, Hope Ave., Scituate, RI.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Thomas Remington, Sr. was born 24 Feb 1718/19, Warwick, RI (son of Joseph Remington, I and Margaret Burlingame); died Aft 1774.

    Notes:

Thomas and his heirs received land in Scituate from his father Joseph, 15 March 1743 (Scituate Land Evidence, Vol. 3, p. 27). This was the same land that Joseph had bought in 1731.

There is a record at Scituate dated 28 Jul 1759 of Thomas, resident of Scituate, and his family moving to Portsmouth, RI. (source Barbara Chase)

On 21 Feb 1761, Thomas Remington of Portsmouth sold land and house in Scituate to George Roberts of Warwick. (Sc. Land Ev. Bk 5 p. 319; source Barbara Chase)

He may be the Thomas Remington, son of Joseph, listed at Warwick in the 1774 RI Census. If so, this would mean that he moved from Portsmouth to Warwick.

He may also be one of the 4 Thomas Remingtons listed in the 1790 census at Warwick.

The births of five of Thomas & Mary's children are recorded at Scituate. However, they may have been born elsewhere and recorded there after the family moved to Scituate.

Thomas married Mary Collins 23 Nov 1740, Providence, RI. Mary (daughter of Eliezar Collins, Sr. and Elizabeth Unknown) was born Abt 1720; died Aft 29 Jul 1754. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Mary Collins was born Abt 1720 (daughter of Eliezar Collins, Sr. and Elizabeth Unknown); died Aft 29 Jul 1754.

    Notes:

She probably is a daughter of Elisha Collins; see his Scituate will dated 31 Oct 1778, proved 3 Dec 1778.

    Notes:

I am making the assumption that the Thomas and Mary whose marriage is recorded in Scituate, belongs to this family group, since this Thomas had a brother Lippitt, whose marriage was also recorded in the same book. The notation implies that they were married in Providence, but that the marriage was recorded in Scituate several years later. The Scituate record says 20 Nov.

Providence records this marriage: Thomas, of Providence, and Mary Collins, of Scituate, m. by William Burton, Justice, Nov. 23, 1740. (see Arnold's VRs for Providence - Marriages p. 157)

REMINGTON Thomas, and Mary Collins, of Eliza; m. by William Burton, Justice, Nov. 20, 1740 (Scituate VRs).

He may have been the Thomas Remington who later moved to Portsmouth (needs more research); see this note from Barbara Chase: "Scituate, RI Probate Records; Vol. 1; p. 409 - 28 Jul 1759 - Certificate to Thomas Remington who has 'moved with his family to Portsmouth' and acknowledged that he, his wife, and children were proper inhabitants of the town of Scituate."

    Children:
    1. Margret Remington was born 18 May 1742, RI.
    2. 4. Jonathan Remington was born 28 Dec 1743, RI; died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI.
    3. Thomas Remington, Jr. was born Between 1745 and 1758; died 19 Jan 1831.
