    Notes:

Census record put his birth at c 1795.

According to "History of Providence County" p 264, Alanson was a farmer, and during the last years of his life he kept a hotel and store in Manville, RI.

In the Federal Census of 1850, the family is at Smithfield, RI: Alanson Vose 55 RI Trader, Abby 40 RI, Carlisle 17 or 19 RI, Ornando R. 15 RI, Josephine A. 12 RI, Warren L. 10 RI, and Merancy 44 RI (?).

    Notes:

According to the death record at the RI State Archives, Abby Vose, widow, born Warwick, died in 1860 at age 51 of consumption, in Manville (source: Ken Carlson).

Her great-great-grandson Charles provided information that her funeral was in Manville, and her obit gave her age as 51 y 5 m 14 d. I used that age to compute her birth date.

    Children:
    1. Warren L. Vose

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  Amariah Vose was born Abt 19 Apr 1768; died 29 Aug 1846; was buried , Arnold-Vose Cemetery, East Orchard St., Woonsocket, RI.

    Notes:

His name is sometimes given as Amaziah. Most sources show Amariah Force or Amariah Vose. There were several men of this same name in MA around the same time.

About the brother listed here: I don't know for sure that this particular Jeremiah is Amariah's brother, or even that he had a brother Jeremiah. This needs more research to confirm. I am placing them together as a working model, based on several pieces of evidence. Amariah supposedly came to RI from Wrentham, MA; Jeremiah enlisted in the Rev War at Wrentham. They both eventually settled in northern RI. The surname of both morphed from Force to Vose. Their birth years are close. One published book says Amariah had two brothers -- Jeremiah & Hezekiah (but no source given). Lastly, an online tree shows them as brothers (but no source given).

I have one theory that their parents may have been Jeremiah Force and Margret Blake, who were married at Wrentham, MA, 8 Dec 1762. It is the correct time frame, location, and names (Amariah had a daughter named Margaret). However, this family needs more research.

For information on this family, see "History of Providence County, RI" ed by Richard M. Bayles, 1891 WW Preston & Co., NY, vol 2 p 476.

According to this book, the Vose family came from Wrentham, MA, to Woonsocket, RI. Amariah's chidlren were as follows: Alva, Alanson, Willing, Eliza Ann, Aaron, Melissa, and Margaret. Details on some of this children follow in this book.

In the Federal Census of 1790, Amariah Force and family are at Holliston, MA. However, this may be a different individual. One Amariah force was a Revolutionary War pensioner, and he may be the one at Holliston in 1790.

Another Amariah Vose, Rev War pensioner, died at Boston, MA, in 1831. His wife, Jane (md 1781 Boston), later lived in Manville, RI, with married daughter Mary "Polly" Eddy.

In the Federal Census of 1800, Amariah Force and family are at Bellingham, MA.

I have estimated the birth years of some of Amariah's children.

    VOSE AMARIAH 1768 - 29 AUG 1846 WO #010

Amariah married Rejoice Cook 29 Dec 1791, Wrentham, MA. Rejoice was born 22 Feb 1771, Wrentham, MA; died 15 Jul 1855; was buried , Arnold-Vose Cemetery, East Orchard St., Woonsocket, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 13.  Rejoice Cook was born 22 Feb 1771, Wrentham, MA; died 15 Jul 1855; was buried , Arnold-Vose Cemetery, East Orchard St., Woonsocket, RI.

    Notes:

    Rejoice COOK
Rejoice, d. of Aaron and Rachel, Feb. 22, 1771 (Birth)
    Wrentham, MA

    VOSE REJOICE (COOK) 1771 - 15 JUL 1855 WO#010

    Children:
    1. Willing Vose was born 1793.
    2. 6. Alanson Vose was born Abt 1796; died 2 Jan 1881; was buried , Oak Hill Cemetery, Woonsocket, RI.
    3. Eliza Ann Vose was born Abt 1800.
    4. Margaret Vose was born Abt 1802.
    5. Malancy Vose was born 1802.
    6. Aaron Vose was born Abt 1805.
    7. Alvah H. Vose was born 1813.

  3. 14.  Peleg Remington was born Abt 1775 (son of Jonathan Remington and Mary Havens); died 16 Dec 1847; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

Please note that I am not sure that Peleg belongs to these parents. I am including him here based on certain evidence including census, location, and age. See notes for Susan Briggs.

In the 1820 Federal Census, Peleg is listed at Warwick: 2 FWM <10, 1 FWM >45, 1 FWF <10, 3 FWF 10-15, 1 FWF 26-44. This suggests that Peleg and Susan had 4 daughters and 2 sons.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Susan Remington is living at Warwick, listed next to -- or possibly with -- Thomas & Almira Remington. This suggests a family relationship. Thomas was s/o Russell Remington.

I have made a working assumption that Susan Remington is Thomas's aunt by marriage to his uncle Peleg.

There may be another son of Peleg and Susan in this family: William H. Remington who married Sarah F. Hazard at Warwick 25 July 1849. (needs more research to confirm -- yes, this has been confirmed)

Peleg's will was dated Nov 1847, proved 14 Feb 1848 at Warwick. It mentions wife Susan and daughter Phebe Ann Arnold.

DAR records show Susan Briggs as Peleg's second wife. I don't know that this is accurate. The DAR file shows "Nancy" as his first wife. I believe there was an earlier Peleg Remington who had a wife named Nancy/Anstice. The two could have been confused by researchers, but then again there could have been two Pelegs with wives named Nancy. However, another thought is that this Peleg's first wife could have been Lydia Rhodes, Phebe Field, or Amy Fifield. I have four possible wives for Peleg Remington II, but that could certainly be incorrect. See notes for Peleg Remington II b 1764.

DAR records show this Peleg as b c1757/58, but the RI Cemetery Database has c1775.

Peleg married Susan Briggs 5 Feb 1807, Warwick, RI. Susan was born Abt 1778; died 15 Mar 1861; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

  4. 15.  Susan Briggs was born Abt 1778; died 15 Mar 1861; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Susan Remington is age 73, living at Warwick. With her are Solomon 32 and Phebe Ann Madison 40. Phebe may be Susan's daughter; if so, it is a second marriage for her. Her first marriage was to a Mr. Arnold, as she is mentioned as Phebe Ann Arnold in Peleg's will dated Nov 1847 at Warwick.

In the census, they are listed next to -- and are probably living next to -- Thomas and Almira (Dyer) Remington, both age 42, and their 6 children. This suggests that Susan may be closely related to Thomas -- although is not proof, since there were a lot of Remingtons around at that time.

If it is true that there is a close family relationship, I am guessing that Susan could be Thomas's aunt (by marriage), meaning that her husband Peleg was possibly a brother to Thomas's father, Russell Remington. Therefore, I am placing Peleg on this family tree, with the qualifier that more research is needed to confirm the ancestry of Peleg.

I have made a working assumption that Susan Remington is Thomas's aunt by marriage to his uncle Peleg.

Rootsweb's Worldconnect has these parents for Susan (Susannah):
    Father: Richard Briggs b: 26 NOV 1737
Mother: Phebe Place b: ABT 1738 in North Kingstown, RI
First source given: The American Genealogist p 38:51
Second source given: Maerston Watson, "Royal Families Americans of Royal and Noble Ancestry" Volume Two
Publication: Baltimore MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc.
Third source given: Reverend Francis Marbury and Five Generations of His Descendants Through Anne (Marbury) Hutchinson and Katherine (Marbury) Scott), pages 199-207

This sounds plausible because Richard's grandmother was Susannah Spencer, so he could have named a daughter Susannah after her. Also, Peleg and Susan had a daughter named Phebe, who may have been named after Susan's mother Phebe Place.

I need to check the RI Death Index to see if Susan's parents are named.
