Oliver Hopkins

In the Federal Census of 1850, the family is at Jamestown, RI, as follows: Oliver Hopkins 84 RI, Jane 62 RI, Oliver W. 23 RI, Mary 19 RI (mn Caswell, w/o Oliver), Susan M. 30 RI -- possibly sis of Oliver; and Albert Caswell 12 RI -- possibly brother of Mary.

There is quite an age difference between Oliver and his wife Jane; I wonder if it was a second marriage? I have made an assumption that the marriage of Oliver Hopkins of Jamestown to Mary Brown is a first marriage for this Oliver who married Jane Battey.

The will of Oliver Hopkins, "yeoman of Jamestown, advanced in age" is dated 23 Feb 1836, proved 20 Mar 1851. It mentions wife Jane; sons George L. of Oteger, NY; William H.; and Oliver W. under 21; dtrs Ruth Watson of Louiano, NY; and Susan.

Oliver married Mary Brown 19 Aug 1790, Newport, Newport Co., RI. Mary was born Abt 1770; died Abt 5 Jul 1823, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

The will of Jonathan Hopkins of SK, being aged, was written 3 Jan 1801, proved 10 Mar 1801. It names his father John Hopkins dec'd; wife Mary; sons Job, Oliver, Fones, & John; dtrs Roby Stanton, Ruth Hopkins, Susannah Brown, & Eunice Greene; also 2 grandsons named Jonathan Hopkins, sons of Job and Fones.

Jonathan married Mary Whitford 27 Apr 1760, East Greenwich, Kent Co., RI. Mary (daughter of Robert Whitford and Margaret Fones) was born Abt 1738; died Abt Sep 1806, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

The will of John Hopkins of West Greenwich, yeoman, is dated 25 Aug 1790, proved the last Monday of Dec 1791. It mentions wife Mary; sons Jonathan & George; dtrs Susannah Burlingame, Rhoba Whitford, and Wait Case.

He could be s/o Joseph & Martha Hopkins who was born in EG 2 Apr 1712; but I am not sure.

He also could be this individual: Hopkins John, and Mercy Greene; m. by Thomas Spencer, Justice, Oct. 9, 1732; East Greenwich marriage. The name Mercy is sometimes interchangeable with Mary in the old records.

John married Mary Unknown Abt 1732. Mary died Abt Sep 1806, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

The will of Mary Hopkins of West Greenwich, widow, advanced in years, is dated 13 Jan 1795, proved last Monday of Sep 1806. It mentions sons Jonathan & George; daughters Susannah Burlingame, Rubah Whitford, and Wate Case.

The will of Robert Whitford, yeoman of East Greenwich, is dated 31 Oct 1768, provde 29 Nov 1788. It mentions wife Margaret; sons Caleb & Robert; dtrs Mary Hopkins, Maraley (single), Margaret Wait, and Diner (single).

It is believed that Nicholas lived in Portsmouth, West Greenwich, and North Kingstown, RI. He was reportedly a weaver by occupation. His name is found in several legal documents:
On 13 March 1683 he received a legacy of a loom from Orpheus Pomeroy of Portsmouth.
On 21 January 1697 he bought land in East Greenwich from David Shippee for 6 pounds.
On 29 November 1703 he sold a house and 30 acres of land in East Greenwich to William Underwood for 15 pounds (witnessed by John and Elizabeth Pearse and John Heath, Vol. 3 p. 96).
On 3 February 1709/10 he was granted a "quarter right" in the vacant lands of Narragansett, apportioned by the 13 original proprietors as per Act of the RI Assembly (Narra. Hist. Reg., Vol.3, p. 3); this land comprised the present town of West Greenwich.
On 14 August 1721 he and his wife, Mary, mortgaged 25 1/2 acres and a house, for 30 pounds.
On 12 March 1733 he deeded his son Pasco 20 acres.
On 7 November 1733 the mortgage of 1721 was discharged.

In his will, dated 3 December 1743, proved 28 March 1748 W. G., Nicholas mentions:
his eldest son, Pasco, second son Robert, son David, youngest son Ezekiel, eldest daughter Catherine Peckham, and daughters Dinah Weaver, Mary Greene, Ruth Summers, grandsons Jonathan Hill and Thomas Jackwaise, and great-grandson Henry Jackwaise son of granddaughter Elizabeth Jackwaise.

Nicholas — Mary CARR. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

It is known that Nicholas's wife was Mary. It is believed she was Mary Carr because some of the male given names of Nicholas's sons and grandsons are names found among male relatives of Mary Carr, possibly indicating that they were named after these relatives. Alden Beaman says she was Mary Casey, born ca. 1674.

If she was Mary Carr, born about 1676-1678, her parents may have been Caleb and Phillip/Phillis Carr, and her paternal grandparents were Robert and Elizabeth Carr. These are our ancestors through the Carr/Kerr line.
