    Little Compton, town page detail: BROWNELL William, ---, 1648 d. (---, 1715). (americanancestors.org)

William may have been s/o Thomas Brownell:
BROWNELL Thomas, 1619, died before 1665 (Little Compton)
    BROWNELL Thomas, ----, 1650.

BROWNELL William, of Thomas, ----. Town Page Detail: Portsmouth Birth (Vol. 1 : Pg. 144) Portsmouth, RI
BROWNELL Sarah (Smiton, of William, dec.), his wife, ----. Town Page Detail: Birth (Vol. 1 : Pg. 144) Portsmouth, RI (same page as William above)

    William named a son Thomas:
BROWNELL Thomas, of William and Sarah, May 25, 1674, LC.

A family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect shows his parents as Thomas and Ann (Bourne) Brownell. This seems to agree with some of the rather fragmented birth notes I found referring to a couple Thomas & Ann, and some births for children surnamed Brownell.
