Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Peter Cook was born 1720; died Dec 1810, Coventry or Foster, RI.

    Notes:

    This information is from findagrave.com:
Peter Cook was a "Licensed Innkeeper" in Scituate, RI from 1755 onward. He was Captain of the 1st Scituate Company of the Providence Regiment, in June 1769; and in 1770, he was Captain of the Scituate Troop of Horse of the Second Providence Company. He is mentioned in the "Records of the Colony of Rhode Island", Vol. VII, pg 283; and in "Colonial Families of the United States", Vol 2, page 213.

From James N. Arnold's Vital Record of RI, Providence newspapers:
COOKE Peter, at Coventry, in 91st year, Dec. 22, 1810
COOKE Capt. Peter, at Foster, aged 91 years. He has left 400 descendants. Phenix of Jan. 5, 1811

Peter married Mercy Wanton Abt 1746. Mercy (daughter of John Wanton and Ann Redwood) was born 1725, RI; died Abt Feb 1789, Foster, Providence Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Mercy Wanton was born 1725, RI (daughter of John Wanton and Ann Redwood); died Abt Feb 1789, Foster, Providence Co., RI.

    Notes:

    Note from findagrave.com:
She is known to be a grandchild of Governor John Wanton of Rhode Island, but there is no certainty of who her parents were. She received a legacy of 420 pounds in her grandfather's will [I have not been able to verify that]. There is a brief newspaper account of her death, listing her as "Marcy Cook, wife of Captain Peter of Foster."

The bequest of 450 pounds to granddaughter Mary Wanton is found in the will of Edward Wanton, not Gov. John Wanton (see the Genealogical Dictionary of RI by John Osborne Austin p 215 at Google Books).

I have made an assumption that she is d/o John Wanton (s/o John) and Ann Redwood (d/o Abraham). They had a daughter Ann b c 1727? who married Job Randall in Scituate. (see Supplement to Descendants to Roger Williams Book I Waterman Line, compiled by Dorothy Higson White, Roger Williams Family Assoc. 2003, p 9.)

There is a family connection to Scituate, and also Peter and Mercy named a son John Wanton Cook.

From James N. Arnold's Vital Record of RI:
COOKE Mrs. Marcy, wife of Capt. Peter, in 61st year, at Foster. She has had 99 children and grandchildren, 78 of whom are now living. [Note. We think there must be a mistake in the age given here. J. N. A.] Feb. 20, 1789; Town Page Detail: Providence (newspaper report).

Findagrave.com lists five children for Peter & Marcy but I think there may have been at least three more, births recorded at Providence: Rhoda 1749, Elizabeth 1751, and Christopher 1753.

The children listed at findagrave.com are: Susanna, Charles 1747, Constant 1758, John 1762, and Hope 1764. The above three children recorded in Provdience fit into this list. Note that Mary, Marcy, and Mercy are sometimes interchangeable in the old records.
