Peleg Dawley

Notes:

John and Mary Dawley are in several deeds at Exeter in the 1740s and 1750s. Some of the wils designate him as John Jr., while others do not; one has both designations in the same will. The surname is sometimes spelled Dawly.

Notes from find-a-grave "virtual cemetery" memorial for "John Dawley III":
"John made Freeman of the colony 1 Tues May 1730 when of North Kingston -- farmer and carpenter. Lieut. of Exeter Militia C company 1743-44-45. Will made 10 Jul and probated Nov 1755 [my note -- where?] names wife Mary; sons Michael, John, Job, and Peleg; daughters Elizabeth Rathbun, Lydia, Margaret, and Mary. [Wife] Mary was also mentioned in Job Tripp's will. In 1752 one widow named Mary Dawley was on the Exeter tax list; Mary's will made 26 March 1756 named all of the children listed in this family (except Job?). In 1771 Mary Dawley alias Stephens dau of John Dawley of West Greenwich deceased was warned out of Exeter and returned to West Greenwich. Brother Daniel was Executor of John's will." John — Mary Tripp. Mary (daughter of Job Tripp, Sr. and Unknown Wife) was born Abt 1709. [Group Sheet]

Mary is called Mary Dawley in her father's will.

John's will does not mention his wife, but a wife named Elizabeth is in a deed dated 9 June 1744, Exeter. She may have been a second wife -- not known, as she must have died before he wrote his will, dated 7 Nov 1749 (proved 13 Mar 1753). It mentions six sons and one daughter, all of whom I have listed on the tree.

I have roughly estimated the birth years of their children.

Some online family trees have the name of John's wife as Lydia Armstrong. One tree notes that John & Lydia deeded land to son Samuel in 1738 (where? possibly NK)

I found his estimated year of birth at find-a grave.com, but this needs more research to confirm.

John — Elizabeth Unknown. Elizabeth died Bef 7 Nov 1749. [Group Sheet]

Elizabeth, named as John's wife in a deed, may not have been his first wife. Some online trees show his first wife as Lydia Armstrong. This needs more research to confirm.

Job was "of North Kingstown." Job's first wife (name unknown) was the mother of some or all of his children. His will, written when he was "well stricken in years" (no date) mentions his wife Elizabeth and the following children: Job, Isaac, William, Benoni, Abiel, Mehitabel (Thomas), Ann (Moon), Mary (Dawley), Phebe (Rice), Abigail (Greene), & Deborah (Spink); also, grandson Isaac son of Isaac.

Job Tripp was made a citizen of Newport in 1726. He was a deputy at the General Assembly from North Kingstown from 1734 to 1738.

Job married Unknown Wife Abt 1700. Unknown was born Abt 1680. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Elizabeth, widow of John Sweet, was probably Job's second wife. She is mentioned as "mother-in-law" (stepmother) in the will of Job, Jr.

It has been speculated that Job's first wife was named Mehitable, as that is the name of the first daughter. Also, Job Tripp, Jr. named his first daughter Mehitable. However, Job Sr. did have a sister named Mehitable, so it is possible that this is why the name has been passed down in the family.

Peleg's will mentions his wife Anne, and children Job, Peleg, Richard, Priscillla, Sarah (Rogers), Mary (Smith), Anne (Rogers), & Mehitable (Thurston), also daughter-in-law Sarah Tripp and kinsman William Sanford, overseer.

Peleg married Anne Sissons Abt 1665. Anne was born Abt 1647, Dartmouth, MA; died 13 Jan 1712/13. [Group Sheet]
