In the 1900 census, Adda B. Howell is a widow age 56, living with her elderly parents in ridgeway, Orleans Co., NY. Her son, Fred B. Howell, age 25, is with them.

Helena married Henry Benjamin Howell Abt 1872. Henry was born 23 Apr 1841; died 19 Feb 1900; was buried , Boxwood Cemetery, Medina, Orleans Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

Hezekiah married Calista Remington 26 Oct 1842. Calista (daughter of Rufus Remington and Deborah Olmsted) was born 14 Jan 1820, Brutus, Cayuga Co., NY; died 6 Nov 1914; was buried , Boxwood Cemetery, Medina, Orleans Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

In her older years, sometime in 1910 or later when she was over 90 years old, Calista Remington Bowen wrote a bit of family history for her granddaughter. In it, she refers to her grandparents as Javez Remington and Penelope Mills Remington of Harvard, CT.

Excerpts:
"My memory carries me back to the days of our childhood with pleasure. Although the so-called pleasures and luxuries of to-day did not come to us, we perhaps enjoyed the rustic surrounding of our home equally as well. When spring came we enjoyed maple sugar time, the romps in the woods where the fire was kept burning all day and well into the night to boil the sap into syrup [?] when it was taken to the house and the [?]

Rufus married Deborah Olmsted 30 Jan 1811. Deborah (daughter of Ambrose Olmsted, Jr. and Mary Palmer) was born 22 Jan 1786; died 4 Sep 1834. [Group Sheet]

"My mother was twice married. Her first husband was Petit Baxter who died 1806 leaving her with a daughter, Lucy by name, 2 years old. Deborah (my mother) then went back home until she married my father, Rufus Remington, in 1810." (from Calista Remington Bowen's family stories)

Please note that I am not positive that Jabez belongs in this family, but time and location in both marriage and census records strongly suggest it. It doesn't seem that he would have been a son of any of Daniel's brothers, although I suppose he could be a son of Samuel if Jabez was born c1755, or son of Stephen. I have searched for confirming data but none seems to be available. I wonder why he did not name a son Daniel, or Stephen or Samuel for that matter. He did name a son Ebenezer, the name of one of Daniel's sons and possibly his closest brother, However, he also named a son Rufus, the name of one of Samuel's sons. So this is inconclusive.

Compiler Katie Mills thinks that Jabez likely served in the Revolution, although no records have confirmed that.

Jabez Remington, of Norfolk, affidavit: " . . . am of the Anne baptis perswasion and do indeavor at all times to attend that worship beleaving in my concience that it is true worship of God." -- witnessed by Elder Joseph Hastings, 12 June 1776 (Norfolk Vital Records 1728-1850).

Jabez married Penelope Mills 27 Apr 1773, Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT. Penelope (daughter of Joseph Mills, Jr. and Susanna Case) was born 28 May 1755, West Simsbury, Harttford Co., CT; died Mar 1814, Cayuga Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

Penelope's parents moved to Norfolk, CT, in 1759. Her stepmother Hannah Remington was reportedly from Suffield. (source: History of the Simon Mills Family, by Katie Mills, p. 59)

In the 1810 census Penelope appears to be a widow, listed as head of household in Brutus, Cayuga Co., NY. She is listed next to son-in-law Samuel Olds and near son Martin Remington. Also in the same town is David Remington, probably the nephew of Jabez. Penelope's household is as follows: 1 FWM 10-15, 1 FWM 16-25, 1 FWM 26-44, 1 FWF 10-15, 1 FWF 16-25, and 1 FWF 45+.

Penelope died of consumption at age 59. "She was a professor of religion in the Baptist denomination."
