Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Phineas Kenyon Shaw was born 30 Nov 1804, Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY (son of Anthony Shaw, IV and Dinah Smith); died 5 May 1886, Alfred, Allegany Co., NY.

    Notes:

Phineas moved from Stephentown to Allegany Co., NY around 1825. He purchased 66 acres of land, later the farm property of his son Milo. Phineas brought with him his widowed mother Dinah, his sister Lydia, and brother John. Phineas was a carpenter as well as a farmer and was industrious and frugal. He held the offices of Constable, Collector, and Assessor for many years. Both he and his wife Melissa, daughter of Rev. Spencer Sweet, an early settler, were active members of the Seventh Day Baptist Church. They had 11 children. Their son Milo married Alzina daughter of Daniel Coon of West Edmund, Otsego, and succeeded his father in possession of the homestead. He has been a successful farmer, Assessor for three years, and Justice of the Peace for eight years. Another son, Phineas A., born 3 May 1835, was a soldier in the Civil War. In Aug 1864 he married Fanny Stillman. (source: Allegany County and Its People)

Phineas married Melissa Sweet 20 May 1828, Alfred, Allegany Co., NY. Melissa was born 8 Mar 1809, Allegany Co., NY; died 26 Mar 1887, Alfred, Allegany Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Anthony Shaw, IV was born 22 Jan 1748/49, RI (son of Anthony Shaw III and Susannah Butts); died 7 Aug 1820, Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY; was buried , Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY.

    Notes:

Anthony is reported to have been a twin; a sister Content Shaw may have been his twin. I have not been able to confirm this.

Anthony's second wife Dinah was his first wife's niece. Dinah was born the year Anthony and Susannah married, and the story has come down in the family that Anthony made a cradle for Dinah when she was a baby.

" . . . 17 day of June 1793 Anthony Shaw of Stephentown in the County of Rensselaer in the State of New York, Yeoman, son of Anthony Shaw late of Exeter, deceased, who was appointed guardian to Arnold Shaw son of Anthony Shaw late of Exeter, deceased . . . " (Exeter is in the State of Rhode Island.) Susannah Remington Shaw was still alive when Anthony got custody of his half brother. He had custody only a short time and relinquished it to a half-brother John Shaw.

Anthony served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in the 4th Regiment of the Albany County Militia under Col. ir Capt. Robert Killian Van Rensselaer and Lt. Jonathan Niles, under Brig. Gen. Abraham Ten Broeck.

According to a family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect (source Kenneth Linwood Shaw, III), Anthony died "of Cholera Morbus," aged 71 years old.

His will mentions his wife Dinah as well as 11 sons, 6 daughters, and one stepdaughter (Sarah Solomon). Those in his will are "beloved wife Dinah"; sons Peter, John, Russell, Justus, Anthony Jr., Asa, George S., Remington, Sisson N., Benjamin, and Phineas K.; daughters Rebekkah and Susannah, single women; Sarah Solomon (wife's daughter); Abigail Thomas; Mercy, Roxana, and Mary Shaw.

It has been written that he fathered 22 children (see findagrave.com for details on his life and family).

Anthony married Dinah Smith 2 Oct 1797, Rensselaer County, NY. Dinah (daughter of George Ebenezer Smith and Abigail Remington) was born 4 Jul 1771, RI; died 15 Feb 1860, Alfred, Allegany Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Dinah Smith was born 4 Jul 1771, RI (daughter of George Ebenezer Smith and Abigail Remington); died 15 Feb 1860, Alfred, Allegany Co., NY.

    Notes:

According to a family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect (source Kenneth Linwood Shaw, III), Dinah Smith married three times, to: a Mr. Solomon, by whom she had a daughter Sarah b1795; Anthony Shaw IV (as his third wife) by whom she had eleven children born in New York State between the years 1798 and 1815; and Uriah Goodrich whom she married in 1832.

According to notes at this site, Dinah's second husband was the same Anthony Shaw who had married her aunt Susannah Remington. This has been confirmed in an email from Sherry Kosciuch.

Anthony Shaw's will mentions "his wife's daughter Sarah Solomon"; there is no indication as to whether this is her maiden name or her married name.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Dinah Goodridge, age 80 RI, is living at Alfred, Allegany Co., NY. She is with the Wescott family. There are several Shaw families nearby.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Anthony Shaw III was born 30 Nov 1725, Little Compton, Newport Co,. RI (son of Anthony Shaw II and Rebecca Wood); died 30 Apr 1793, Exeter, Washington Co., RI; was buried , Anthony Shaw Lot, Narrow Lane, Exeter, RI.

    Notes:

Anthony is referred to as Capt. Anthony Shaw in some of the town council records of Exeter. He is given several responsibilities, such as helping to mend highways as a member of the various "highway squadrons." He also was told to transport some people who had smallpox, and his name was put into the jury box at least once.

Anthony Shaw is in the 1790 census at Exeter. His gravestone in Exeter says he was "late of Newport" and died in 68th year of his age.

Apparently Anthony died shortly after his marriage to Anna Dyer. From Exeter Town Council Records (2), 1771-1794, ed. Linda L. Mathew, RI Roots Gleanings publication: "6 May 1793, Anna Shaw, widow of Anthony Shaw, late of Exeter, deceased, refused to take adminstration on the personal estate of her husband and the next of kin of lawful age, Stephen Shaw, was absent . . . Stephen Shaw later appeared, refused administration, and approved of what had been done." James Clarke was appointed adminstrator.

"17 June 1793, Anthony Shaw of Stephentown in the County of Rensoler (Rensselaer), New York, was appointed guardian of his brother Arnold Shaw, son of Anthony Shaw, late of Exeter, deceased, on his complying with the law and giving bond in the amount of 100 pounds . . . Benjamin and William Shaw, sons of Anthony Shaw, deceased, appeared in council and chose Matthew Clarke of Exeter to be their guardian. The council agreed and also appointed him guardian to Anthony Shaw's son John."

"26 Oct 1793, at the house of the heirs of Anthony Shaw; Anthony Shaw of Stephentown, in Rensoler (Rensselaer) County, New York, guardian of Arnold Shaw, an infant son of Anthony Shaw, late of Exeter, deceased, appeared in council and resigned the guardianship. In his place the council appointed John Shaw of Newport, who was to comply with the law and post bond in the amount of 100 pounds . . . The petition of Susannah Church of Exeter, Sisson "Nicholds" of Stephentown and his wife Marcy, Stephen Shaw of Providence, yeoman, Sarah Shaw of Exeter, singlewoman, Benjamin Shaw, William Shaw, John Shaw, and Arnold Shaw, all of Exeter, infants under 21 years of age by their guardian Matthew Clarke, which recommended that Matthew Clarke be fully authorized, was approved by the council."

According to these lists of heirs, Anthony had these heirs or children still living after his death: Anthony, Stephen, Susannah (Church), Sisson Nichols (husband of Marcy), Ssrah, Benjamin, William, John, and Arnold.

Anthony married Susannah Butts 28 Dec 1749, RI. Susannah (daughter of John Butts and Abigail Briggs) was born 28 Feb 1728/29, Portsmouth, RI; died 12 Jul 1750, RI. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Susannah Butts was born 28 Feb 1728/29, Portsmouth, RI (daughter of John Butts and Abigail Briggs); died 12 Jul 1750, RI.
    Children:
    1. 2. Anthony Shaw, IV was born 22 Jan 1748/49, RI; died 7 Aug 1820, Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY; was buried , Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY.
    2. Content Shaw was born 1750; died Jul 1750.

  3. 6.  George Ebenezer Smith was born Abt 1740 (son of Ebenezer Smith, Jr. and Dinah Remington); died Abt 1812, Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY.

    Notes:

George's middle name as Ebenezer came from a descendant, Ron Kosciuch. Supposedly he was called Eben. The marriage record at Jamestown says he is George Smith, so of Ebenezer & Dinah.

George married Abigail Remington 10 Dec 1769, Jamestown, RI. Abigail (daughter of John Remington and Abigail Greene) was born Abt May 1743, Jamestown, RI. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Abigail Remington was born Abt May 1743, Jamestown, RI (daughter of John Remington and Abigail Greene).

    Notes:

The marriage entry identifies Abigail as d/o Capt. John dec'd and Abigail. However, I have wondered if she might really be a child of Susannah, John's first wife. She is not named as a granddaughter in the will of David Greene.

    Notes:

I am making an assumption that this marriage entry in the Jamestown vital records belongs to this Abigail.

SMITH George, of Ebenezer and Dinah and Abigail Remington, of Capt. John, dec., and Abigail, Dec. 10, 1769.

    Children:
    1. 3. Dinah Smith was born 4 Jul 1771, RI; died 15 Feb 1860, Alfred, Allegany Co., NY.

Anthony married Rebecca Wood 14 Aug 1718, Little Compton, Newport Co., RI. Rebecca (daughter of Thomas Wood and Content Thurston) was born 17 Apr 1696; died Jan 1766, Little Compton, Newport Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 4. Anthony Shaw III was born 30 Nov 1725, Little Compton, Newport Co,. RI; died 30 Apr 1793, Exeter, Washington Co., RI; was buried , Anthony Shaw Lot, Narrow Lane, Exeter, RI.

  3. 10.  John Butts

John — Abigail Briggs. [Group Sheet]

  4. 11.  Abigail Briggs
    Children:
    1. 5. Susannah Butts was born 28 Feb 1728/29, Portsmouth, RI; died 12 Jul 1750, RI.

  5. 12.  Ebenezer Smith, Jr. was born Abt 1715 (son of Ebenezer Smith, Sr. and Abigail Unknown).

    Notes:

Jeffrey Watson's Diary has this interesting note, which may (?) pertain to this Ebenezer and his brother: "Ebenezer & Ephraim Smith tried to cheat me by altering the date of their deed" (entry dated 9 Mar 1740/1).

Ebenezer may have had a second wife named Elizabeth, although I am not sure of this. I have found some references to Ebenbezer & Elizabeth from this general time period. (needs more research)

Ebenezer married Dinah Remington 20 Apr 1738, Jamestown, RI. Dinah (daughter of Gershom Remington and Clemence Battey) was born Between 17 Aug 1716 and 1717, Jamestown, RI. [Group Sheet]

  6. 13.  Dinah Remington was born Between 17 Aug 1716 and 1717, Jamestown, RI (daughter of Gershom Remington and Clemence Battey).

    Notes:

The birth record at Jamestown reads: "Dinah Reminton daughter of Gershom & Clemans his wife born 17 August 1716." Another entry on a different page says 1717.

    Notes:

The original marriage entry at Jamestown identifies Ebenezer Smith as son of Ebenezer & Abigail. Dinah is identified as daughter of Gershom & Clemence.

Ebenezer & Dinah were married by Daniel Weeden, Warden of the Peace.

    Children:
    1. 6. George Ebenezer Smith was born Abt 1740; died Abt 1812, Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY.

  7. 14.  John Remington was born Abt 1705, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI (son of Stephen Remington and Penelope Parker); died Bef 9 Jan 1761.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

This is an estimate of John's date of birth. I have placed him in this family group primarily on the basis of the names of his children, which clearly seem to reflect Penelope Parker and her parents. I have found a birth record for neither John nor his presumed sister Hannah, but in her case the marriage record identifies her parents.

I am not absolutely sure that Susannah & Abigail were two wives of the same John Remington, but it is a reasonable assumption based on the Jamestown records, which admittedly are confusing at points.

Boyd Scott Remington's ancestry chart lists another child, Peleg, in this family group; but that may just be a guess, as Peleg is not in the vital records. BSR gives no date of birth for Peleg, but as his marriage was in 1772, he could possibly fit into this family group. Unfortunately, BSR notes no sources.

John married Abigail Greene 8 Aug 1743, Jamestown, RI. Abigail (daughter of David Greene and Sarah Barber) was born 25 Mar 1715, Jamestown, RI. [Group Sheet]

  8. 15.  Abigail Greene was born 25 Mar 1715, Jamestown, RI (daughter of David Greene and Sarah Barber).

    Notes:

The births of Penelope and Sarah are not recorded in Jamestown records. However, the will of David Greene, Abigail's father, mentions by name his daughter Abigail Remington, as well as two granddaughters, both under 18: Penelope and Sarah Remington. The will is dated 21 Jul 1759; therefore, these two of Abigail's daughters must have been born in 1741 or later. His will does not mention the other children of Abigail.

    Notes:

They were married by Edward Carr, Warden.

Note that I am not sure which John Remington Abigail married; his parentage is assumed in my placing him here with these parents.

    Children:
    1. 7. Abigail Remington was born Abt May 1743, Jamestown, RI.
    2. John Remington was born 6 Jan 1744/45, Jamestown, RI; died 15 May 1807, Newport, RI; was buried , Common Burial Ground, Newport, RI.
    3. Penelope Remington was born Abt 1747.
    4. Susannah Remington was born 17 May 1749, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI; died 22 Jan 1797, Stephentown, Rensselaer Co, NY; was buried , Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY.
    5. Asca Remington was born 25 Jul 1751, Jamestown, Newport Co., RI.
    6. Sarah Remington was born Abt 1753; died Aft 21 Jul 1759.
