  1. 1.  John B. Remington was born Abt. 27 Feb 1859, Chemung, NY (son of Theodore Remington and Margaret Bogardus); died 25 Feb 1944, Cranston, RI; was buried , Highland Memorial Park, Resthaven 366, Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

In the 1880 census, George Remington 24 and John Remington 22 are together at Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY. They are boarding with Martha Willman 19 MA and she is the one John married soon after.

In 1900 this family is in Providence, RI: John ? Remington 39 NY (Feb 1861), Martha 38 MA (June 1861), and Fred T. 18 NY (May 1882).

In the 1920 census, this couple is in Warwick, RI: John B. Remington 60 NY and Martha A. 58 MA.

In the 1925 RI state census, the family is in Providence as follows: Frederick T. Remington 42 NY, Cora N. F. 40 RI, John D. 64 NY, Martha A. 53 MA, and Clara A. Sholes 70 MA mother-in-law.

In 1930 John and Martha are still living in Providence with their son and his wife: Frederick Remington 46 NY, Cora 44 RI, John 72 NY, and Martha 68 MA; also Clara Sholes, mother-in-law 75 MA.

In Jan 1935, John B. and Martha A. Remington are living at 59 Warren, Providence, no occupation given for either. Son Frederick is a salesman for refined oil; Cora N. is a tool inspector at Brown & Sharpe.

In 1940 the family is still in Providence as follows: Fred T. Remington 56 NY, Cora N. 54 RI, and John B. 81 NY, father, widower.

I think his middle initial may have been for his mother's maiden name, although this is not confirmed.

John married Martha Ann Willman Abt. 1881. Martha (daughter of Whitaker Willman and Henrietta Stansfield) was born 9 Jun 1861, Chilmark, Dukes Co., MA; died 19 May 1938, Providence, RI; was buried , Highland Memorial Park, Resthaven 366, Johnston, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. Frederick Theodore Remington was born 7 May 1882, NY; died Jul 1871.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Theodore Remington was born bet. 1821-1825, NY (son of Zeno Remington and Mary Waity Olmsted); died Aft 1 Jun 1880, NY.

    Notes:

I have made an assumption that Theodore is a son in this family, based on a few points: 1) he named a son Zeno; 2) his birth year range and location place him here; and 3) Theodore and Philander are both mentioned in a land assessment as grantees Jan 1849.

In 1850, Theodore 25 and Margaret 23 are at Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY; they have a son Henry age 1. They appear to be living with or next to the family of Jonah and Malinda Campbell.

My thought: Henry born c1849 is Zeno in later records; his middle initial is H; or, Henry died young and Zeno was born the next year and his middle name is Henry. I have come to the conclusion that Zeno was Theodore's father and Henry was Margaret's father.

In 1860, they are at Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY: Theodore 30, Margaret 28, Zeno 10, George 5, John 1.

Theodore Remington age 42 enlisted for Civil War 1863 in Cayuga, NY; mustered out of service 24 Aug 1865.

In 1865 they are at Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY again: Theodore 32, Margaret 29 ?, Zeno 13 ?, George 8, John 6, Mary S. 4. Unclear, difficult to read. If I understand the census numbering correctly, they are in dwelling number 31, which is headed by Henry and Gertrude Bogardus, ages 75 and 74 (although on separate pages).

In 1870 they are at Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY: Theodore 41, Margaret 39, Zeno 18, George 12, John 10; and Gertrude Bogardus 82. I am making an assumption that she is Margaret's mother.

In 1880, Theodore Remington is age 55, a boarder in the family of John D. and Elinor Bogardus in Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY. They must also be related thorugh Margaret.

His estimated year of birth changes so much in these records (1825 x2, 1821, 1829, 1830, 1833), but I am sure he is the same individual.

Theodore married Margaret Bogardus Abt 1849, NY. Margaret (daughter of Henry Bogardus and Gertrude Unknown) was born Abt 1832, NY. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Margaret Bogardus was born Abt 1832, NY (daughter of Henry Bogardus and Gertrude Unknown).

    Notes:

I have made an assumption that Margaret is etiher a daughter or granddaughter of Henry and Gertrude.

    Children:
    1. Zeno H. Remington was born Abt 1850, NY; died Aft. 1 June 1875.
    2. George Remington was born Abt 1855, NY; died Aft. 1 June 1880.
    3. 1. John B. Remington was born Abt. 27 Feb 1859, Chemung, NY; died 25 Feb 1944, Cranston, RI; was buried , Highland Memorial Park, Resthaven 366, Johnston, RI.
    4. Mary Remington was born Abt. 1861, Chemung Co., NY.
    5. Lena L. Remington was born May 1871, Cayuga Co., NY; died 7 Jun 1950, Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY; was buried , Lakeview Cemetery, Fleming, Cayuga Co., NY.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Zeno Remington was born 1785 (son of Jabez Remington and Penelope Mills); died Bef 1830, NY.

    Notes:

In the 1820 census, Zeno Remington is head of household in Brutus, Cayuga Co., NY. There are 2 males under 10, 1 male 26-44, 1 female under 10, and one female 25-44. The adults are Zeno and Mary; the two boys are likely Orlando (9) and Philander (2), and the girl could be Mary (not sure of her exact age).

By 1830 Zeno is not there and assumed to have died. See his wife Mary for notes.

I have made an assumption that Theodore is a son in this family, based on a few points: 1) he named a son Zeno; 2) his birth year range and location place him here; and 3) Theodore and Philander are both mentioned in a land assessment as grantees Jan 1849.

Zeno married Mary Waity Olmsted Jan 1810. Mary (daughter of Ambrose Olmsted, Jr. and Mary Palmer) was born Abt 1793; died 1 Nov 1875; was buried , Weedsport Rural Cemetery, Cayuga Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Mary Waity Olmsted was born Abt 1793 (daughter of Ambrose Olmsted, Jr. and Mary Palmer); died 1 Nov 1875; was buried , Weedsport Rural Cemetery, Cayuga Co., NY.

    Notes:

In the 1830 census, Mary Remington is listed as head of household with four children. Researcher Katie Mills gives the name of only one of these children, Orlan. It appears there were two other sons and one daughter. See my notes below:

In 1850, Mary Remington is age 55, living in Brutus with Philander Remington and family. I am assuming he is her son. Also there is Mary E. Remington, 28, apparently single. I am making an assumption she is a daughter.

    Inscription: "Grandmother" age 82y

    Children:
    1. Orlando O. Remington was born 1811, NY; died 25 Jan 1902, Weedsport, Cayuga Co., NY; was buried , Weedsport Rural Cemetery, Cayuga Co., NY.
    2. Philander Remington was born 1818, NY; died 1879; was buried , Old Sennett Cemetery, Cayuga Co., NY.
    3. Mary E. Remington was born Abt 1822, NY; died 29 Jan 1887; was buried , Weedsport Rural Cemetery, Cayuga Co., NY.
    4. 2. Theodore Remington was born bet. 1821-1825, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1880, NY.

  3. 6.  Henry Bogardus was born Abt 1790.

Henry — Gertrude Unknown. Gertrude was born 1 Sep 1787; died 12 Mar 1879; was buried , Glen Cemetery, Paxton, Ford Co., IL. [Group Sheet]

  4. 7.  Gertrude Unknown was born 1 Sep 1787; died 12 Mar 1879; was buried , Glen Cemetery, Paxton, Ford Co., IL.
    Children:
    1. 3. Margaret Bogardus was born Abt 1832, NY.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Jabez Remington was born Abt 1750, Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT (son of Daniel Remington, I and Sarah Winchell); died Between 1800 and 1810, Cayuga Co., NY.

    Notes:

Please note that I am not positive that Jabez belongs in this family, but time and location in both marriage and census records strongly suggest it. It doesn't seem that he would have been a son of any of Daniel's brothers, although I suppose he could be a son of Samuel if Jabez was born c1755, or son of Stephen. I have searched for confirming data but none seems to be available. I wonder why he did not name a son Daniel, or Stephen or Samuel for that matter. He did name a son Ebenezer, the name of one of Daniel's sons and possibly his closest brother, However, he also named a son Rufus, the name of one of Samuel's sons. So this is inconclusive.

Compiler Katie Mills thinks that Jabez likely served in the Revolution, although no records have confirmed that.

Peter Comstock of Norfolk, CT, sold 100 acres in Norfolk to Jabez Remington, 2 Sep 1775. (source: "A Comstock Genealogy, Descendants of William Comstock of New London, CT" p. 53)

Jabez Remington, of Norfolk, affidavit: " . . . am of the Anne baptis perswasion and do indeavor at all times to attend that worship beleaving in my concience that it is true worship of God." -- witnessed by Elder Joseph Hastings, 12 June 1776 (Norfolk Vital Records 1728-1850).

"Anabaptists are Christians who believe that baptism is only valid when the candidate confesses his or her faith in Christ and wants to be baptized. This believer's baptism is opposed to baptism of infants, who are not able to make a conscious decision to be baptized." (Wikipedia)

"The Anabaptists could find no justification for elaborate church bureaucracies. Decisions should be made not by a hierarchical leader but by the entire local assembly. In fact, the Anabaptists were the first to try to practice democracy in the congregation . . . Another central teaching was the separation of church and state. The church, they said, is to be composed of free,

Jabez married Penelope Mills 27 Apr 1773, Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT. Penelope (daughter of Joseph Mills, Jr. and Susanna Case) was born 28 May 1755, West Simsbury, Harttford Co., CT; died Mar 1814, Cayuga Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Penelope Mills was born 28 May 1755, West Simsbury, Harttford Co., CT (daughter of Joseph Mills, Jr. and Susanna Case); died Mar 1814, Cayuga Co., NY.

    Notes:

Penelope's parents moved to Norfolk, CT, in 1759. Her stepmother Hannah Remington was reportedly from Suffield. (source: History of the Simon Mills Family, by Katie Mills, p. 59)

In the 1810 census Penelope appears to be a widow, listed as head of household in Brutus, Cayuga Co., NY. She is listed next to son-in-law Samuel Olds and near son Martin Remington. Also in the same town is David Remington, probably the nephew of Jabez. Penelope's household is as follows: 1 FWM 10-15, 1 FWM 16-25, 1 FWM 26-44, 1 FWF 10-15, 1 FWF 16-25, and 1 FWF 45+.

Penelope died of consumption at age 59. "She was a professor of religion in the Baptist denomination."
