William named a son Thomas:
BROWNELL Thomas, of William and Sarah, May 25, 1674, LC.

A family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect shows his parents as Thomas and Ann (Bourne) Brownell. This seems to agree with some of the rather fragmented birth notes I found referring to a couple Thomas & Ann, and some births for children surnamed Brownell.

I would like to find out where the name Remington (for one of their sons) comes from.

The birth record for Remington Northup says he was a son of Nicholas & Ann (Slocum) Northup. Was this a clerk's error? I have a marriage for another Ann Slocum to Nicholas, William's older brother; but supposedly she died defore Remington would have been born. This puzzling entry needs more research.

William was a Drum Major in the RI troops in the Revolutionary War. His gravestone is inscribed "A hero of the Revolution."

There is a very interesting account of this family and some allied families in both RI & NY, titled "Biography of Henry Knowles Greene, Town of New Haven, NY" [http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyoswego/biographies/hgreene.html].

In 1654 William was brought to court for driving his oxen five miles on the Lord's Day.

He was one of the surveyors of highways in 1657.

From Mayflower Descendants Through Five Generations, John Alden, pp. 23 & 24: William Pabodie was of Duxbury in 1672. He was among the first settlers of Little Compton c 1680, and for many years led Lordsday Worship in his house by praying, reading, and singing, until about 1700 when they got a preacher (quote from Ezra Stiles). William, his son, and some of his grandsons were Deacons.

From Rootsweb's Worldconnect: "William spelled his last name Pabodie and variants. William, who grew up in Duxbury, Mass., is referred to in various documents of the period as a yeoman, boatman, planter, and wheelwright. He was also a land surveyor. On Nov. 1, 1648, four years after he was married, he bought from John Holland and Hopestill Foster of Dorchester, Mass., a dwelling house, garden, stables, land and meadow. He later bought additional tracts of land in Mattapoisett and Sepecan. At one point, on Oct. 27, 1680, he adjusted a boundary line between his lands and those of Mrs. Sarah Parke and William Brewster. He served as a Duxbury town officer and as a representative or deputy to the General Court at Plymouth, being repeatedly elected to the court from 1654 to 1663, then again in 1668, and continuously from 1671 to 1682. He was admitted a freeman of the colony June 5, 1651. About 1684, he removed to Little Compton, then in Massachusetts but now in Rhode Island, where he had acquired a share in lands. Thus he established in Rhode Island what has come to be known as the Rhode Island branch of the family."

William is a son of John & Isabell Pabodie. He died in his 88th year.

7688 William Bailey was made freeman of East Greenwich on 2 May 1721. BAILEY, William (I00372)

7689 William came from a family of 14 siblings. Born in Rhode Island, he moved to New Bedford, MA, then to Dutchess County and Ulster County, NY. He came to Michigan from Kingston, NY, in 1835 with his wife Jane. His trip from New York State was by canal to Buffalo, then by boat to Detroit and by foot to Fenton. (Information from Thomas Lavery, a descendant)

In the 1860 Federal Census, William & Jane Remington are living at Fenton, Genesee Co., MI. They have three children: Edwin (Eben) 23, John 19, & Jane (Jennie) 16. Also with them is brother Abner Remington, 37, a sailor.

The 1870 census shows William at age 61 & his wife Jane living in the Village of Fenton, Genesee County, MI, with his extended family. In the household are Edward H. White & Eliza J. with their three children: Jessie A., Mabel P., & Edward H. Jr.; along with two domestic servants, a farm hand, and another man -- possibly a boarder or relative. Next door are John Remington (his son) with wife Emily and son Jay C. (see Roll 671 p. 1000 R Wm Remington; online census images)

In 1880 William is 71 and Jane is 72. They are still at Fenton, MI, living near and with family members.

The obituary in The Fenton Independent, 29 Apr 1897:
"William Remington, probably the oldest pioneer of this township, at his home in the northern part of the village. He was born in Tiverton, Rhode Island, in 1809, one of a family of 14 children, all of whom are dead but one brother, Abner, of Mundy. He with his wife, Jane Broadhead, came from Kingston, New York, in 1835, taking up land in a then unbroken wilderness on the banks of the Shiawassee. At one time he owned 500 acres of land, on which a good portion of Fenton now stands. Three children survive: Ebin and John of Fenton and Mrs. John Traver of Ft. Wayne, Indiana."
Remington, William (I05161)

7690 William Clarke was a Gentleman of East Farleigh, County Kent, England; and St. Botolph, Aldgate, London. CLARKE, William (I02778)

7691 William died at age 102+.

In the 1850 Federal Census, William is age 63 and living at Portsmouth, RI, near his brother John. With him is son William M. Manchester, age 36, and also Abby B. Bennett, 29. Abby may be his niece, through either the Bennett or the Fish family

From notes of Glenn Russell at Rootsweb's Worldconnect: William Manchester's will dated 21 Nov 1883 and probated 12 Jan 1885 at Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI mentions son, William M.; John, son of late brother, Edward; Ann Augusta, Clara W. Rathbone, and Bertha L. -- all daughters of John; unnamed daughters of Henry King of Tiverton, granddaughters of brother John.

7693 William Dyer came to America from London in 1633, united with the Boston Church, and was made freeman 3 Mar 1636. In 1638 he was disowned and disfranchised as a followed of Anne Hutchinson & Wheelwright, driven out of Massachusetts, and so he fled to Rhode Island where he became Secretary of the colony. His wife Mary was the famous friend & disciple of Anne Hutchinson. Mary Dyer herself was banished from Massachusetts and later suffered martyrdom by hanging on Boston Common 1 June 1660. 7695 William Fairbanks served in the Revolutionary War in 1777 as a Private in Capt. Samuel Weber's Company.

William & Priscilla and their family moved from RI to Montgomery Co., NY in the early 1800s (info from Arlene Fairbanks Dutton at Rootsweb).

I assume that William was from the Fairbanks family on Prudence Island. The 1760 Town Tax listed Benjamin & Nathaniel Fairbanks, one of whom may have been the father of William. According to a family tree at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, William was a son of Benjamin & Rebecca Fairbanks, and Nathaniel was a brother of Benjamin, thus William's uncle; they were both sons of Jeremiah Fairbanks. This needs more research to confirm.

The publication "The Fairbanks Family in America" by Lorenzo Sayles Fairbanks (Boston: 1897) says that William was possibly a grandson of Jeremiah Fairbanks of Bristol, RI. (this source at Old Colony Historical Society in Taunton, MA)

Prudence Island was raided by British troops several times in 1775 and 1776. The families and their livestock were evacuated to Warwick or Bristol. Most of the houses and other structures were burned; few of the families returned.
Fairbanks, William (I14970)

7696 William had about 9 children by his second wife (see New England Historical Genealogical Register Vol. 43 p. 313). Ellery, William (I23796)

7697 William Hart is mentioned as nephew in the will of his uncle Nathanial Hubbard. Hart, William (I28632)

7698 William Hubbard was Pastor of the church at Ipswich, according to family notes by Gov. John Leverett, father of Anne Leverett.

William's death record at Boston says he died at age 83.
Hubbard, William (I28643)

7699 William is a son of Constant & Elizabeth (Collier) Southworth.

William's brother Edward Southworth married Rebecca's sister Mary Pabodie, and his sister Mary Southworth married Rebecca's uncle David Alden.

William died in his 60th year.
Southworth, William (I15203)

7700 William is age 15 (almost 16?) in the 1900 Federal Census, living at Bristol, RI, with his parents and two older sisters. In 1910, he is still living at Bristol, but now is married to Eva and has two children.

The gravestone has his birth year as 1885.
