1651 | Exeter Land Evidence: In 1741 Samuel Slocum of Jamestown and Ann his wife deeded two pieces of land to his "infant" brother Peleg of North Kingstown, one piece to brother Moses, and one piece to brother John. Probably "infant" means minor; otherwise, his father must have had a younger second wife. In any case, Peleg would have been born prior to 18 June 1741. In 1753 Samuel Slocum of Jamestown, yeoman, and Hannah his wife sold two tracts of land to "John Raynolds." From the location and content of these two items of land evidence, these two Samuels appear to be the same individual, although possibly the second deed could pertain to his parents, also Samuel & Hannah. I do not know when they died. Samuel's will dated 16 January 1775 (if it is indeed his will) says he is "aged." It mentions no wife, but mentions a deceased brother Benjamin Slocum (according to a transcript of the will in the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 3 No. 3 p. 250). This is confusing because no genealogies I have consulted list a sibling Benjamin for this Samuel. However, I have added him (see note at Benjamin). The will also mentions Samuel's children as follows: Samuel, Jr., of Jamestown; William, of Newport; Peleg; Abel; Sarah (Anrick?); Penelope; and Rhoda. | Slocum, Samuel (I09098)

1669 | Florence's birth record is not in the Coventry town records. The birth record for sister Olive is also omitted. The record for Bertha was not added until 1943. However, I have made an assumption that these three sisters were born in Coventry, as were their older siblings. Florence's death record at Coventry identifies her parents as William & Lenora. In the Federal Census of 1910, Florence is age 13, living with her mother and two sisters in Coventry. It just so happens that they are living next door to Oscar & Anna Andrews, Aunt Velna's parents. | Sprague, Florence G. (I06949)

1678 | For a record of this marriage, see "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" by Clarence Almond Torrey, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, MD., 1985, pp. 136-137 Some online sites have this Caleb as being the one born in August 1657. Various sites have that other Caleb as being either the son of Robert or the son of his brother Caleb, who was the governor. Also, Francis Richmond Sears has this Caleb's estimated year of birth as 1650, but 1644 seems more likely when the whole family group is analyzed. We know from his father's will that Caleb was the eldest. Caleb's will of 1688 mentions his wife "Phillip," eldest son Caleb, other sons William, Robert, Job, and daughters Mary & "Phillip," both under 18. Also mentioned are cousin Nicholas Carr, "father" Major John Greene, and brother-in-law Peter Greene. | CARR, Caleb (I01321)

1685 | For part of his early childhood Joseph was brought up in a Shaker community at New Lebanon, NY. Around 1830 they were living in Hayfield, Crawford Co., PA; in 1840 they were in Venango, PA. By 1842 they had joined the Mormons in Nauvoo, IL, along with their two youngest children. The family was probably in the wagon train that left Nauvoo for Council Bluffs in 1846.
