| His name is often spelled Jeremy. Jeremiah and Frances came to America about 1638 and settled at Newport, RI. He signed the Portsmouth Compact in 1639. Jeremy, one of the original settlers of Newport, RI, is a direct descendant of King Edward I of England and his wife Eleanor of Castile, through their daughter Joan Plantagenet, who died in 1307. Jeremy Clarke, son of Mary Weston, was a nephew of Sir Richard Weston, Earl of Portland and Lord Treasurer of England. Jeremy was a captain (according to his wife's tombstone inscription), in 1648 was President Regent of Aquidneck Island, and held other public offices. His death in 1651 was later recorded in the Quaker records. His son Walter Clarke later became Governor of RI, and was one of the original proprietors of the Monmouth Patent, NJ. | CLARKE, Captain Jeremy (I02144)

| His name is sometimes given as Amaziah. Most sources show Amariah Force or Amariah Vose. There were several men of this same name in MA around the same time. About the brother listed here: I don't know for sure that this particular Jeremiah is Amariah's brother, or even that he had a brother Jeremiah. This needs more research to confirm. I am placing them together as a working model, based on several pieces of evidence. Amariah supposedly came to RI from Wrentham, MA; Jeremiah enlisted in the Rev War at Wrentham. They both eventually settled in northern RI. The surname of both morphed from Force to Vose. Their birth years are close. One published book says Amariah had two brothers -- Jeremiah & Hezekiah (but no source given). Lastly, an online tree shows them as brothers (but no source given). I have one theory that their parents may have been Jeremiah Force and Margret Blake, who were married at Wrentham, MA, 8 Dec 1762. It is the correct time frame, location, and names (Amariah had a daughter named Margaret). However, this family needs more research. For information on this family, see "History of Providence County, RI" ed by Richard M. Bayles, 1891 WW Preston & Co., NY, vol 2 p 476. According to this book, the Vose family came from Wrentham, MA, to Woonsocket, RI. Amariah's chidlren were as follows: Alva, Alanson, Willing, Eliza Ann, Aaron, Melissa, and Margaret. Details on some of this children follow in this book. In the Federal Census of 1790, Amariah Force and family are at Holliston, MA. However, this may be a different individual. One Amariah force was a Revolutionary War pensioner, and he may be the one at Holliston in 1790. Another Amariah Vose, Rev War pensioner, died at Boston, MA, in 1831. His wife, Jane (md 1781 Boston), later lived in Manville, RI, with married daughter Mary "Polly" Eddy. In the Federal Census of 1800, Amariah Force and family are at Bellingham, MA. I have estimated the birth years of some of Amariah's children. VOSE AMARIAH 1768 - 29 AUG 1846 WO #010 | Vose, Amariah (I26149)

| His name is sometimes shown as Tristan in genealogies. A genealogy at Rootsweb says he is s/o Thomas Burman and Hannah Annabel. The estate of Tristram Bowerman, of Bristol, Shipwright, dec., division of estate 21 Apr 1714; mentions widow Joan; sons Samuel eldest, John, & Jonathan; daughters Hannah, Mary Monroe (w/o Joseph Monroe), Mehittabel Steward (w/o Daniel Steward), Anne, & Sarah. Inventory of estate of Tristram Bowerman of Bristol, dtd. 9 March 1712/3 presented by Mrs. Joan Bowerman, his widow, & by Samuel Bowerman, eldest son; Appraisers Peter Reynolds & William Throope [Br 3:120/1/2]. | BOWERMAN, Tristram (I20559)
| His name is sometimes spelled Barnet or Barnett. | Hill, Barnard (I27243)
| His name is sometimes written as Arannah or Aaron in the census records at Onondaga and Allegany Counties, NY. The 1820 Federal Census at Marcellus, Onondaga Co., NY lists the following Wightmans: Allen & Arannah. It appears that Allen is age 26 - 45 yrs, and Arannah is 45+. The 1830 Federal Census at Bolivar, Allegany Co., NY, lists the following Wightmans: Simon, Aaron, E.H. The 1840 Federal Census at Wirt, Allegany Co., NY, list the following Wightmans: A., E.H., S., & L. | Wightman, Aurunah (I23424)
| His name is spelled "MacGreagor" on the marriage certificate and "MacGregor" on the death certificate. Hugh & Hannah lived in the Edgewood section of Cranston on Armington Street. They raised their niece Kittie Maplet Remington after her mother died in 1889. John worked for Brown & Sharpe Manufacturing Company. (Information on the McGregor family came from Nancy MacKay Hattox.) | McGreagor, Hugh Robert (I04805)
| His name is unclear in the census. | Totman, Charles T. (I20801)
| His name is written as both Lawton and Layton. In the 1850 Federal Census, Layton & Betsey Hopkins are living at West Greenwich, RI. In 1860 Layton is age 67, living at West Greenwich; Catherine Wightman, age 53, is in the household, keeping house. I am wondering if she is the mother of Catherine Whitman who married Layton's grandson, Calvin. (Whitman & Wightman were the same name at that time, and pronounced the same way.) Her age agrees. In the 1870 census, Layton & Katherine Hopkins, ages 77 & 60, are still at West Greenwich. There seems to be a question as to where he is buried: HOPKINS, LAYTON 1793 - 25 JUN 1871, CY066 HOPKINS, LAYTON, MAJOR 1793c - 25 JUN 1871, WG028 | Hopkins, Major Layton (I01991)
| His name is written as Milton in the 1920 Federal Census. | Remington, Merton A. (I14097)
| His name may have been Edward. New Bedford whaling files (seamen's insurance records) show an Edward Remington, age 12, b. Dartmouth, MA, who went on a voyage 19 May 1847. The age and birthplace could easily match Joseph's son "Edmund." It says he was 4'10" and had a light complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. In the Federal Census of 1850, there is an Edmund C. Remington, age 35 MA, living at Reading, Hillsdale Co., MI. He is a carpenter. This could be the son of Joseph & Mary. | Remington, Edward Coggeshall (I06495)
| His name may have been Freeman Hitchcock (see 1870 Federal Census). The family is living at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY. In the home is Huldah, age 68, mother of Ann Elizabeth (Remington) Hitchcock. They are next door to Daniel Remington and family. | Hitchcock, Truman B. (I09646)
| His name may have been Peregrine. It is Pedigreene in his father's will. The name is passed down in the family and is spelled variously as Peregrine, Peregreene, Perigreen, Pedegreen, Pedigreen(e), Peddegreene, Perrygreen, and Petegren. From the Exeter Town Council records: "Pedigreen Tripp of Exeter yeoman and Susannah Tripp wife of said [PT] . . . land to my father Job Tripp . . . land my grandfather Job Tripp gave to my father in his will . . . my brother Peleg . . . " dated 25 Feb 1758 Also in the Exeter town records, Peddegreene Tripp and wife Martha signed deeds on 14 April 1780 and again in 1785. This may be a second marriage for Pedigreene, although dates on the gravestones suggest Susannah died in 1778 (S. Tripp, see family burial lot findagrave.com). There is a marriage record at Richmond for a Pedigreen Fry Tripp: TRIPP Peregrine Fry, of Exeter, and Martha Boss, of Jeremiah, of Richmond; m. at Richmond by John Webster, Justice, Sept. 14, 1760; Town Page Detail: Marriage (Vol. 1 : Pg. 43), Richmond, RI. Is Peregrine Fry Tripp the same individual who married Susannah Sherman? This needs more research. If Susannah died before 1760, this Pedigreene may have married Martha Boss in 1760 which case the youngest son would be hers. | Tripp, Pedigreene (I13323)
| His name on the marriage record is Lorenzo J. Remington. In the Federal Census of 1850, Lorenzo & Laura Remmington are living at Chester, Hampden Co., MA. They have a daughter Mary, age 3. | Remington, Joel Lorenzo (I06402)

| His obituary in The Fenton Independent: "John B. Remington, one of Fenton's oldest residents, died at his home in the northern part of the village. He was the second son of Mr. & Mrs. William Remington and was born in Fenton, being one of the first children born here. Surviving: wife, who has been spending the winter in Florida with her brother; two sons -- Clifford of Fenton and Bert of Alamagordo, NM; and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Traver, now a resident of Ohio." In the 1870 Federal Census, John & Emily are living at Fenton, Genesee Co., MI, with their 2-year-old son Jay C. They are next to William & Jane, along with Eliza J. & Edward White and their children. In the 1880 Federal Census, J. B. & Emma Remington are still at Fenton, MI, with sons Clifford & Herbert. A cousin, Peter Dubois, age 34, is in the household. They are next door to William & Jane, and John's sister Jane E. (Eliza) and her family, now surnamed Traver. In the 1900 Federal Census, John B. & Emma J. Remington, ages 57 & 54, are still living at Fenton, MI. Son Herbert J., 27, is still with them. Peter Dubois, 53, is still boarding there. Next door is son Clifford Remington and his family. Quote from Tim Remington, after visiting Michigan: "There is a house that is still standing that was the home of John Broadhead Remington (our great grandfather). He built it using bricks he made in his brickyard. We have pictures of it and also a millstone that was used in 1840. We visited the historical museum in the afternoon and the folks there were great. They delighted in showing us the history they found of our relatives and put together a packet of information for us. They also showed us a brick that came from John Broadhead Remington's brickyard and it had the initials "JR" engraved in it. I understand that stamping initials into the bricks was typical of the bricks built in those days." | Remington, John Broadhead (I05190)

Remington as A Birth day's Present Dec. 6th AD 1847 by Miss Dorcas Bates." She later became his wife. After the death of Charles's second wife, Mary, c1923-24, the Bible was passed on to Jessie Belle (Spencer) Moulton, b. 1904, her niece (or grand-niece). In the Federal Census of 1850, Charles & Dorcas, ages 23 & 20, are living in the household with his wodowed mother Sarah Remington, 75. Also in the household are: Mary Bates 10 (sister of Drocas), Franklin Remington 24, William H. Remington 22, Jonathan M. Remington 25. In the Federal Census of 1860, he is age 39, married to Mary E. age 21, and living at Johnston. He is a carpenter.
