3452 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Mary B. Cogshall is age 36, living at Tiverton, RI. With her are three sons: John 6, Thomas 4, & Joshua 1. Nearby is Phebe Cogshall, 72, probably her mother-in-law. In the 1860 Federal Census, she and her husband, David Shaw, have two Martin children from her previous marriage. They also have a one-year-old daughter, Meribah. (see notes for David Shaw) In the 1870 Federal Census, Meribah Shaw, age 53, is still living at Tiverton. In the household are two sons from a previous marriage, Thomas 24 and Joshua P. 21 (?) Coggeshall; and two of her children by David Shaw, Meribah A. 11 & James A. Shaw 8. In 1880 she is age 63, still at Tiverton; marital status is widowed. Still with her are three sons: Thomas D. Coggeshall, 34; Joshua P. Coggeshall, 31; and James A. Shaw, 18, a fisherman. They are living next door to son John S. Coggeshall and his family, including an uncle Stephen Manchester, probably Meribah's brother. From the census data, Mary B. & Meribah appear to be the same individual. Her full name may have been Meribah Brayton Manchester. However, according to Carla Phillips' data, they are two distinct individuals. This needs more research to resolve. 3453 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Morgan appears to be age 25 and living with John Remington age 56 (widower of Lucy Burton) and Noah S. Remington age 22 at Easton, Washington Co., NY. Morgan's first wife Hannah, age 24, is also there. Morgan came to Mahaska County, Iowa, in 1855, and to Union County in 1863. In the 1860 Federal Census, Morgan & Matilda are living at Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., Iowa. In 1870 & 1880 they are at Jones, Union Co., Iowa. His obituary says he left a "companion and six children." (Afton Enterprise, Iowa, 16 June 1892) "Afton (Iowa) Enterprise, June 16, 1892: On Saturday evening, June 4, 1892, at his home in Jones township [Union county], occurred the death of Morgan Remington, aged 66 years, 7 mos and 20 days. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. Reed, of Thayer, at the residence of the deceased on the following Monday after which the remains were laid in the Murray cemetery. "The deceased was born in Washington county, New York, Oct. 14, 1825; came to Mahaska county Iowa, in 1855 was married to Matilda Cooper, June 21, 1856. Moved to Union county Iowa, in 1863. 3455 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Nathan Remington is age 45, and living at Wallingford, Rutland Co., VT, in the household of Alfred & Rebecca Hill or Hull. A notation on the census says he is insane. The following quote is courtesy of Mary Lou Raftery, and excerpted from "People of Wallingford" by Birney C. Batcheller, Stephen Daye Press, Brattleboro, VT; p 207: "For many years the town of Wallingford provided for paupers by auctioning them off to the lowest bidder at the annual town meeting. There was one town charge named Nathan Remington. About 1840, Alfred Hull said he would take Nathan for the work he could do. So Nathan went to the Hull home for one year and remained there until he died in 1885. He was a strong, perfectly healthy man who had a strange mental twist, said to have been caused by being jilted by the girl of his choice. He was a good worker, especially good in caring for the oxen, pigs, and poultry. He was trustworthy and had an excellent memory. He was a familiar figure on the streets and called by name by most of the residents for very many years. In the Hull home his meals were served at a small table by a window in one corner of the big kitchen. The chair placed there was his place to sit. He could read and used to read the Herald aloud to Nancy McLaughlin, who did not know the alphabet, but was an excellent worker in the Hull kitchen for nearly twenty years. Whenever Nathan came to a word he could not pronounce he always said 'sunthin' or nother' and read on. He survived Mr. Hull by ten years and Mrs. Hull by four months but was cared for in the home. His funeral was held in the Hull home and he was buried at the south end of the Hull lot according to a promise given him by Mrs. Hull. A good-sized marble headstone was put at his grave, bearing his name, date of death, and probably age, 80 years." An administrator's settlement of Nathan's will names known family members (including nephews) as follows: John Remington, Amos Remington, Jonathan Remington, Sylvia Perkins, Benjamin Gorton, Clarinda Warner, & Jane Conger; possibly two living brothers, John Remington & Jonathan Remington. B. 10, Pardon D. 7, Dimes R. 5, & Solomon W. 3. I am not sure if all of these children belong to both of these parents. They are next door, or with, Solomon Brown and family, probably Sarah's parents and siblings. | Harrington, Nicholas W. (I20902)

3460 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Oliver 42, and Vincy 49, are living with five of their children at Meriden, New Haven Co., CT. In 1860 they are still there, with four children in the household. In the 1880 Federal Census, Oliver & his wife Olive are at Meriden, New Haven CT. He is a farm laborer and she is keeping house. From Kay Larsen, a descendant of Oliver & Vincy: "Oliver and his second wife, Almira, resided for a time in Branford, New Haven Co., CT, and he was still living there when he divorced Almira. At the time of the divorce, she was living in Meriden and apparently remained there until the end of her life. Oliver, at some point, returned to Meriden as he was living there when he married his third wife, Olive, and he shows up in the city directories until the time of his death." | Remington, Oliver Thurston (I11090)

In the 1870 Federal Census, "Orsamus" & Amanda are still living at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY with their four children and one (presumed) daughter-in-law, Lenora (w/o Charles). In the 1880 Federal Census, "Orsmus" Remington is still living at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY, with his wife Amanda and two sons, Johnathan & Mortimer. Also living with them is a grandson, Willie Wells, age 5, born NY. This family group is living nearby other family members, such as nephew Daniel J. Remington, sister-in-law Huldah Remington living with her son-in-law Byron Hitchcock, and other Remingtons who are probably more distantly related, such as Hiram & Levi Remington. | Remington, Orsemus (I09635)
3462 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Paris & Eliza Clark, ages 21 and 17, are living at a hotel in Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., NY. I am not sure it is this same Paris Clark, but have entered the information pending further research to confirm. It appears that Eliza was his first wife. In the 1870 Federal Census, Paris D. & Frances Clark, ages 35 and 30, are living at Sandy Creek, Oswego Co., NY. They have two children: Stella M., 13, and George L., 8. Paris is a farmer. Also in the household are George C. & Eliza Clark, ages 20 and 18. In 1880 the family is living at Washington, DC, where Paris is a hotel keeper. He is age 44 and Frances is 39. In the 1900 Federal Census, Pheobe Remington is age 66, living at Warwick with the family of John E. Tiffany, who is a son of William & Susan (Remington) Tiffany. In 1920 Phebe M. Remington is age 87, living at Warwick with Minnie B. (Remington) Barrett and her third husband Harrison. Read the notes for her husband Jonathan. | Cleveland, Phebe A. (I05897)

In the household with them are their five oldest children, and two women: Huldah Remington, 45, and Mary Remington, 47. These are probably sisters of Philetus. In the 1870 Federal Census, Philetus & Betsey are living at Clay Center, Clay Co., KS. In the household are Howard, Henry, & Emily. They are next door to Mary, age 67, and Hulda, age 65. In 1880, Philetus & Betsy are in Five Creeks, Clay Co., KS, with their children Howard & Emma L., and niece Susan Harkness. Next door are Mary, 77, and Huldah, 74. | Remington, Philetus (I10848)

In the household are Edward 25, Cynthia 18, Almeda 16, & Holder W. 10, as well as Andrew Dennis 27, Almira Dennis 22, and Andrew F. Dennis -- 2 months. I am making an assumption that Almira is a daughter of Philip & Abby, and that Edward is their son. The Manchesters are living close by Holder & Betsey Dennis, daughter and son-in-law. | Manchester, Philip (I12246)
3469 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Rachel Fish is living at Tiverton, RI. Her age is given as 57. In the household is Joseph Fish, 21, a miner; and George Borden, age 12, mentioned in the 1848 will of Rachel's husband as "George Washington Borden who now lives with me." The death record identifies her parents as "Henry & Maria," no other surname or maiden name given (Fall River Vol.84: Pg.67). I found Rhoda's maiden name on several trees at Rootsweb's Worldconnect. Her gravestone says she died on 23 Aug 1854. | BRIGHTMAN, Rhoda (I18641)

Also in the household is Polly Ross, 62 VT, Mandana's mother. They are living near several other Ross and Griffin families from Vermont. | Davis, Rufus (I18229)

At this point her name was really Ruth O. Westgate, the middle initial meaning Osborn. Ruth remarried to William Westgate sometime before 13 Jan 1846 when she is mentioned as "Ruth Westgate who before her marriage was Ruth Osborn," in the Will of Weston Hicks. The will of Ruth O. Westgate of Tiverton is dated 3 Aug 1852, proved 3 Jan 1853. It mentions four children: William H., Benjamin H., & Thomas D. Osborn; and Elizabeth A. Hambly. | Hambly, Ruth (I00751)

3479 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Samuel B. Remington is age 18, a clerk, and living in Ward 6, Providence, RI, with grocer George & Maria Robinson. However, he appears to be listed also in Warren, where his mother and brothers are living. There he is a clerk age 17. In the Federal Census of 1870, the family is at Providence, RI, as follows: B. Samuel Remington 37 MA, W. Harriet 37 MA, W. Samuel 12 RI, and A. Grace 8 RI; also Ellen Larey 24 Ireland, domestic servant. In the 1880 Federal Census, Samuel & Harriett are at Providence with their two children. |
3482 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Sarah Whitford is age 75, living at West Greenwich, RI. In her household are: William N. Whitford, 54, her son; James A. Whitford, 14; Charles C. Whitford, 8; Sarah M. Gorton, 7, a granddaughter; Abby Matteson, 52; Sheffield R. Remington, 37; and Mary Green, 70. Are all these individuals related in some way? I would like to find out. Nearby is Cyrus W. Remington, age 10, living with the family of Burrill Matteson. Is he a son of Sheffield, who may be widowed? Cyrus later married and had a son named Levi, so perhaps there is a family relationship with Levi Whitford. I am going to make an assumption that Sheffield is a younger brother of Sarah's daughter-in-law, Sally Ann (Remington) Whitford. (Although a reasonable assumption, this needs more research to confirm.) | Nichols, Sarah (I04305)
3483 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Seba & Delia (should be Julia?) Remington, ages 38 & 37, are living at Meredith, Delaware Co., NY. They are next to William & Caroline Remington, and also next to or near Samuel Remington, and their families. Seba has two children: Virgil 14 & Jane 10. In the 1860 Federal Census, Seba & Julia are both age 44, living at Franklin, Delaware Co., NY. They are next to Herman Brownson 32 & Mary H. |
3485 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Seth is age 43 (?), Mary is 40, and their five children range in age from 19 down to 1. The family is living in Seneca, Ontario Co., NY. In the 1860 Federal Census, the family is at Canton, St. Lawrence Co., NY: S. W. Remington 52, Maria P. 48, S. P. 26, Josephine 18, Wm. R. 21; also Ira Martin 11 (probably Lamartine Remington) and Joanna Hayes 18 (domestic). In 1870, Seth is 63 and Maria is 60. They are still living in Canton, St. Lawrence Co., NY. Son LaMartin and married daughter Josephine are living with them. Also in the same town are their other two sons, Seth & William, and their families. The census data shows Seth as born in VT. In 1880 Seth is 73, a widower, boarding at Henderson, Jefferson Co., NY. | Remington, Seth Williston (I03468)
3486 | In the 1850 Federal Census, she is age 11, and her name is given as Sarah C. Smith. It is also Sarah C. Smith in the Genesee Co., MI, Marriage Index. | Smith, Sarah J. (I05628)
3487 | In the 1850 Federal Census, she is called Caroline, and is 11 years old. The census taker probably misunderstood her name. Sometime between the 1850 census and her marriage in 1854, she traveled to CA, probably to join her father and other neighbors who had gone from Illinois. Had her father arranged a marriage for her, or was she just going to look after her father (who died in CA in 1858)? In 1880, Evaline and her husband Jesse and children are living a few doors from her brother, Francis Marion Remington, and his wife and family. Also nearby is brother Elmer and his household, including their mother Esther (Doud) Remington, aged 72. | Remington, Evaline (I14805)
3488 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Sherman & Lucinda are living at Lockport, Niagara Co., NY, with their young son "Alphonzo," and Adaline Miller age 41. Also living in the same town in 1850 is Sherman's sister Abby Flagler and her husband Sylvester, and their 10 children. In 1860, the family is at Lancaster, Erie Co., NY: Sherman 50, Lucinda 47, Sherman 14, & Alphonso 7. Was the census taker confused in separating Alphonso Sherman into two individuals, omitting Isador born c1853? In 1870, Sherman & (possibly second wife?) Esther are living at Lancaster, Erie Co., NY. Alonzo S. is 24, Ida is 21 (presumably his wife), and Isador is 17. In 1870, the census gives Sherman's birthplace as RI. The 1850 census says NY. | Remington, Sherman (I08984)
3489 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Silas & Louisa ("Lovica") are living at Wheatland, Monroe Co., NY, with their children Sarah 17 & Silas H. 10. Silas, age 44 b. VT, is a manufacturer, and his property is valued at $600. They are living a few doors down from his brother William and family. Next door is Jerusha Allen and her family; I believe she is a sister of William and Silas. In 1860 the family is still at Wheatland: Silas 52 VT woolen manufacturer, Lovica 53 NY weaver, Sarah E. 27 NY teacher, and Silas H. 19 laborer. In the Federal Census of 1870, "Sylas" & "Lavina" both aged 63 are still living at Wheatland, NY. With them is Elvira, 21. Some information on Silas, including his dob, birthplace, marriage, and children, came from a descendant, Thomas Frederick Remington III. This information was compiled by Thomas from a family Bible in the possession of Carolyn Kelly as of 15 August 2003. | Remington, Silas Jr. (I11382)
3490 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Simeon A. Smith is age 44, living in District 81, Thomas Co., GA. His wife Susan is 37. They have five children in the household: Simeon 12, Achilles 9, Readen (?) 7, James 5, & Cora 2. The family is there is 1860, too, but just initials are given for their first and middle names in the census. In 1870 Simeon & Susan, ages 65 & 58, are at Thomasville, Thomas Co., GA. Achilles 29 & Susan 19 are with them. | Smith, Simeon Alexander (I10621)

3492 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Solomon & Dorcas are living at Chaplin, Windham Co., CT. They have a daughter Sarah E., 6 months old. Also in the household is Rufus Moulton, age 74. In the 1860 Federal Census, the family is at Napoli, Cattaraugus Co., NY. Solomon & Dorcas have four children. In 1870 they are still at Napoli. There are now four more children in the family. In 1880 the family is at Cold Spring, Cattaraugus Co., NY. | Barber, Solomon (I22194)
3493 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Solomon is 45 and Jane A. is 25 (looks as if 2 was overwritten as 3, but note ages in later censuses). They are living at Waldboro, Lincoln Co., Maine. There are five children in the household: Oliver 19, Bertha M. 16, John A. 15, Warren 5, & Alma F. 1. I assume that Jane is Solomon's second wife, and that the three older children had a different mother. The family is living next to George Achorn and family one one side, and Jacob Achorn and family on the other. They are also near Thomas Achorn. In 1860 Solomon is 54 and Jane A. is 36. They are still at Waldboro, ME. Four children are in the household: Warren 15, Alma F. 11, Everett S. 9, & Susan E. 5. They are living near other Achorn families: Elbridge S., James, John, Jacob, Martin, & Moses. In 1870 Solomon is 63 and Jane A. is 46. They are still at Waldboro, nearby other Achorn families: Thomas R., Alanson, Jacob, John, Nathaniel, & James. In 1880 Solomon & Jane A. Achorn, ages 74 & 56 are still at Waldboro. With them is granddaughter Opal H. Achorn, 12; she seems to be Warren's daughter by a first marriage (see notes for Warren). Also in the household is Solomon & Jane's son Warren 35, his wife Laura A. 30, their son Jasper M. 3, and Ida B. Robinson 12. Ida is either Laura's sister or daughter. In this census, three other Achorn families are nearby: John, Jacob, & Lowell. | Achorn, Solomon (I18467)

3495 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Stephen & Sophia Davis are living at Fall River, MA. They have three children: Julia M. 10, Elery C. 7, & Stephen P. 1. Also in the household is Sophia's sister, Mary E. Armstrong, 20; Daniel Bennett 25, & Mary Buffington 68. | Davis, Stephen (I18515)

3496 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Stephen Remington and his wife Sarah are age 50; son Orville is 9, and daughter Mary is 5. They are living in Ward 4, Providence, RI. In the 1870 Federal Census, Stephen W. Remington is age 71, and Sarah R. is 70. They are living in Ward 7, Providence, RI. Their son Orville, age 29, is with them. Thus, Stephen's date of death in the RI Death Index can't be correct (8 May 1863). Therefore, I am changing it to 1873. He is probably the Stephen W. Remington who is in the Providence City Directory of 1836/7 as a cooper. | Remington, Stephen Warner (I08860)

3498 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Susan Remington is age 73, living at Warwick. With her are Solomon 32 and Phebe Ann Madison 40. Phebe may be Susan's daughter; if so, it is a second marriage for her. Her first marriage was to a Mr. Arnold, as she is mentioned as Phebe Ann Arnold in Peleg's will dated Nov 1847 at Warwick. In the census, they are listed next to -- and are probably living next to -- Thomas and Almira (Dyer) Remington, both age 42, and their 6 children. This suggests that Susan may be closely related to Thomas -- although is not proof, since there were a lot of Remingtons around at that time. If it is true that there is a close family relationship, I am guessing that Susan could be Thomas's aunt (by marriage), meaning that her husband Peleg was possibly a brother to Thomas's father, Russell Remington. Therefore, I am placing Peleg on this family tree, with the qualifier that more research is needed to confirm the ancestry of Peleg. I have made a working assumption that Susan Remington is Thomas's aunt by marriage to his uncle Peleg. Rootsweb's Worldconnect has these parents for Susan (Susannah): Father: Richard Briggs b: 26 NOV 1737 Mother: Phebe Place b: ABT 1738 in North Kingstown, RI First source given: The American Genealogist p 38:51 Second source given: Maerston Watson, "Royal Families Americans of Royal and Noble Ancestry" Volume Two Publication: Baltimore MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. Third source given: Reverend Francis Marbury and Five Generations of His Descendants Through Anne (Marbury) Hutchinson and Katherine (Marbury) Scott), pages 199-207 This sounds plausible because Richard's grandmother was Susannah Spencer, so he could have named a daughter Susannah after her. Also, Peleg and Susan had a daughter named Phebe, who may have been named after Susan's mother Phebe Place. I need to check the RI Death Index to see if Susan's parents are named. | Briggs, Susan (I26124)

3500 | In the 1850 Federal Census, Susanna Remington is age 53, widowed, and living in District 85, Parke Co., IN. In the household with her are ten Remington individuals, presumably her children, although Hannah Remington (age 2 or 20?) may be a daughter-in-law. Also next door, or with her, is son Elisha and his new wife Samantha. In the 1870 Federal Census, Susan Remington is age 74, living at Raccoon, Parke Co., IN, with her son John, 50. | Ames, Susanna L. (I08646)
