3602 | In the 1860 Federal census, his name is listed as Frank N. Lippit, and he is age 2 and living with his parents and older sister Martha at LeBeouf, PA. In the 1870 Federal Census, Frank is listed as Frank Wilder, 12, and is living in Randolph, PA, with his mother and stepfather, Sylvester Wilder. In 1880 Frank Lippitt is living at Meadville, Crawford Co., PA. He is age 23, and is among a group of students boarding at North Main St., listed beneath the name of William Scott, Attorney at Law. These students range from age 15 to 29. According to Richard Brownell, a Lippitt descendant, Frank F. Lippitt b c1858 married first to Addie Guy, who died in 1897. Frank married second to Mrs. Rose Garver in 1899. In the 1910 Federal Census, F. F. & Rose Lippitt are ages 52 & 49. They are living at Meadville, Crawford Co., PA, with their blended family: Guy 26, Robert 23, Karl 21, Lucile 16 (all surname Lippitt), Blanche Garver 27, & Elizabeth Garver 22 (all b PA). 3603 | In the 1860 Federal Census, Horace H. Remington is age 18, a master weaver, living with his mother, stepfather, and some siblings in "Warrick, RI." Horace Remington was in the Civil War, a Sergeant in the RI 9th Infantry, Battalion C. Horace & Zanna moved to Providence in 1864. He owned Horace Remington & Son, a smelting and refining company in Providence. In the 1900 Federal Census, Horace & Zanna, ages 58 & 57, are living on Adelaide Ave., Providence, RI. With them are children Sarah & Clarence. Next door is son Horace and his family. In the 1920 Federal Census, Horace & Edith are living at 172 Adelaide Ave., Providence, RI. His occupation is given as "gold refiner." | Remington, Horace H. (I08918)
|
3604 | In the 1860 Federal Census, J. H. & Avaline Hadley are living in Sacramento Co., CA, with their three oldest children: Aurora, Elmore (Elmer), & Avaline (Evaline). Elmer was probably named after Evaline's brother. Jesse & Evaline probably went to California because of the great Gold Rush, as her father Virgilious had done. However, since they were married in California, the question remains as to why Evaline made the journey as a single teenager, leaving her mother and young siblings. Was she going to "keep house" for her Dad? In the 1880 Federal Census, the family is living at Silver Creek, Marion Co., OR, a few doors down from Eveline's brother F. M. Remington, and near her brother Elmer Remington, and their families. Other Remington family members are also in Oregon at this time. Jesse & Eveline's family group at this time includes their seven youngest children. Later census data indicates that they may have had another child who died young, for a total of eleven. Notes in quotation marks are from Marcia Farina's excellent family web site, "Deep Roots in Hancock, Co., Illinois": "A second great-granddaughter of Jesse and Evaline, Anna Hadley, advises that she has a handwritten family history dictated by Evaline Remington Hadley shortly before her death in April of 1927. That history gives June 15, 1829, as Jesse's birth date, but his sister, Marinda, was born on September 22, 1829. Cumulative census listings and information recorded at the time of Jesse's death (his age was said to be 73), tend to indicate that he was born in 1827." (My note -- censuses I have consulted show his estimated year of birth to be c1828 or 1829. He could have been born either year, even in 1829 if he was a twin, one of which had a later birth. However, I am using Marcia's suggested date for continuity of data.) "Jesse and Evaline are named as Early Oregon Pioneers; they are said to have arrived in Silverton, Marion County, Oregon, in 1865. In 1866, there is a record of Jesse selling a parcel of land in Sacramento, California, in Township 010N, Range 007E, Section 20." | Hadley, Jesse Herschel (I14807)

3605 | In the 1860 Federal Census, Jacob & Harriet are living with their two daughters in Ward 6, Providence, RI. Jacob was a Private in the Union Army, 4th Rhode Island Regiment, Co. B (infantry). He died in the Battle of Antietam, considered the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. September 1862 -- Antietam: On September 17, Confederate forces under General Lee were caught by General McClellan near Sharpsburg, Maryland. This battle proved to be the bloodiest day of the war; 2,108 Union soldiers were killed and 9,549 wounded -- 2,700 Confederates were killed and 9,029 wounded. The battle had no clear winner, but because General Lee withdrew to Virginia, McClellan was considered the victor. The battle convinced the British and French -- who were contemplating official recognition of the Confederacy -- to reserve action, and gave Lincoln the opportunity to announce his Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation (September 22), which would free all slaves in areas rebelling against the United States, effective January 1, 1863. ( notes from web site: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/cwphtml/tl1862.html ) | Roe, Jacob (I00097)

They are living at Tunkhannock, Wyoming Co., PA. With them is Mary Flumenfelt (?), age 37 PA, single, their daughter (see 1880 census also). She must be adopted because it says her father was born in NJ, her mother in PA. I have a photograph of Ida, Nora, Huldah, & Annie Remington taken about 1874, and given to me by Betty Malesky. They are pictured with their cousin Bertie Carr. | Remington, Jerome (I15157)

|
3612 | In the 1860 Federal Census, Joseph A. Elsbree is age 22, living at Taunton, MA, in the household of John & Rhoda Allen. Also there are Henry, Susan, & Adelaide Elsbree. Elsbree is married and age 31, living at Fall River, MA, with his parents and his wife, Nellie M. 20, and son Merton A., 2 mos. | Elsbree, Joseph Alden (I18675)

These are most likely the four brothers in this family. They are miners. In the 1870 Federal Census, Benjamin & Sarah are living with his mother and family at Johnston, Providence Co., RI. They have three children, but from their ages, it appears that they are from his first wife. From Roger Remington: "We were only aware of two brothers that came to California to mine. They were in an area up in the hills north east of Sacramento. N. Of interstate 80 near Colfax, CA. There is still a Remington Hill Rd. near one of their claims. We know that Ben 1 came down to our area, but didn't know of the route of the other. I found 'some' reference to the Remington mining moving into Nevada. There is a bit of confusion when you look at it, because their claims were in Nevada COUNTY, CA. But they may have relocated into Nevada STATE. My uncle (Robert Remington, 2nd son of Ben III) has long since passed, but he did most of the research on this end, so far. | Remington, Benjamin LeValley I (I06192)
