3801 In the 1880 census the family is at Shelter Island, Suffolk, New York. there are five children in the family. Also there is Thomas Donahue, borther-in-law.

I have made an assumption that this is the family of Mary W. Peden who is the mother of Lawrence Austin Records. The 1900 census says both her parents were born in Ireland, and this agrees. The middle initial of W also agrees.
Peden, Thomas (I28423)

3802 In the 1880 census, George Remington 24 and John Remington 22 are together at Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY.

He may be George H. Remington who married Theresa Ashley and died 17 Jul 1930 in Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY. The age and location are right. His grave is in Lakeview Cemetery, Fleming, Cayuga co., NY. This individual needs more research.
Remington, George (I29397)

3803 In the 1880 census, George Remington 24 and John Remington 22 are together at Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY. They are boarding with Martha Willman 19 MA and she is the one John married soon after.

In 1900 this family is in Providence, RI: John ? Remington 39 NY (Feb 1861), Martha 38 MA (June 1861), and Fred T. 18 NY (May 1882).

In the 1920 census, this couple is in Warwick, RI: John B. Remington 60 NY and Martha A. 58 MA.

In the 1925 RI state census, the family is in Providence as follows: Frederick T. Remington 42 NY, Cora N. F. 40 RI, John D. 64 NY, Martha A. 53 MA, and Clara A. Sholes 70 MA mother-in-law.

In 1930 John and Martha are still living in Providence with their son and his wife: Frederick Remington 46 NY, Cora 44 RI, John 72 NY, and Martha 68 MA; also Clara Sholes, mother-in-law 75 MA.

In Jan 1935, John B. and Martha A. Remington are living at 59 Warren, Providence, no occupation given for either. Son Frederick is a salesman for refined oil; Cora N. is a tool inspector at Brown & Sharpe.

In 1940 the family is still in Providence as follows: Fred T. Remington 56 NY, Cora N. 54 RI, and John B. 81 NY, father, widower.

I think his middle initial may have been for his mother's maiden name, although this is not confirmed.
Remington, John B. (I29398)

3804 In the 1880 census, he is an infant with no name. However, he is Eugene A. in 1900. In both censuses, his date of birth is noted as Mar 1880.

The "George Aldrich Genealogy" p. 16 has his date of birth as 7 Mar 1880.
Smart, Eugene Aldrich (I17794)

Notes from Donald Dewey, 15 Nov 2009:
"Colonel George Sanford Burton was a surgeon in the Third Rhode Island Heavy Artillery during the Civil War. He lived in East Greenwich, Rhode Island in a family house at the corner of Post Road and Bay View Avenue. His only surviving daughter Georgie Burton Hazard was born in 1884, the year he died. She had no children. The Colonel's widow Sarah P. Remington Burton remarried a George Paine. Georgie Burton adored her father and detested Paine and resented her mother from then after.

"Georgie Sanford Burton went to East Greenwich Academy in East Greenwich and married the brother of my grandmother Bowdoin Frothingham Hazard of Shrewsbury, NJ. Georgie B. Hazard divorced Bowdoin in 1912 and went on to found a highly regarded school at 59 East Front Street in Red Bank, NJ, which was called Burton Hall. She operated the school until she had a stroke in 1963. She died at our house in Virginia in 1965 and is buried with her father in Warwick, R.I.

"Several of my mother's siblings and both my older sister and brother went to her school. I heard all the stories about Colonel Burton and have his saber and other items such as his marriage certificate that "Aunt Georgie" kept of her father's. She closed the school in the summer and lived up until her stroke in her father's house. Burton Hall had no grade levels - you graduated when she said you graduated - most of her pupils were accepted to Ivy League colleges and universities. The older pupils taught the younger pupils. Everyone learned Greek and Latin.

"Colonel Burton was married twice. A Daniel Hazard who lives in California is the descendent of Burton's first marriage."
Remington, Sarah P. (I10309)

3809 In the 1880 census, there is a Philip Bassett, brother-in-law, and his wife Sarah, living with William & Maria and family.

NY; William P. 10; Rosalie 8; Josephus 6 (Josephine?); and Mary 3; children all born UT. They are living next to the family of Jerome 36 & Lydia Merrill. Most likely Porter & Jerome are brothers.

Lydia & Fuller are missing in the census, and the ages of the children are not consistent with the birth dates as provided by Phyllis Elmore and others. Possibly the census taker was confused, or else compiled the data from memory or from a neighbor. Census takers are not infallible.
Merrill, Porter William (I08585)

Davis, Ozro Porter (I10242)

3817 In the 1880 Federal Census at Newport, Sullivan, NH, Sarah A. Davis is a widow, age 61. With her are a daughter and son: Mary. C. 23, and Fred M. 22. All were born in NH. One inconsistency is that for Mary, it says her father was born in VT. Is this an error?

They are living next door to William H. Davis, 33, and family. I am making an assumption that this is another son. (needs more research)
Unknown, Sarah A. (I10247)

Remington 37, Adelade 32, their 7 children -- apparently including two sets of twins, and the Remington grandparents, Seneca & Hannah. They are living in Ward 6 of Worcester, Worcester Co., MA, near Charles's uncle, Leander C. Remington, and his wife Rebecca.

3823 In the 1880 Federal Census his name appears as Harrold R. Wolfendole, and his mother as N. P. Wolfendole, age 23, married. Both are living with her parents, Jeremiah & Hannah Remington. His father may have left or died while he was very young and so he later took his mother's maiden name, Remington. Or, he may have been raised by his grandparents (needs more research).

In the 1990 Federal Census, Arthur & Elvira are living at Yorkshire, Cattaraugus Co., NY. They have four children. According to the census data, they have had five children, four of whom are still living.

In 1910, Arthur E. & Elvira A. Remington, ages 53 & 50, are at Yorkshire, Cattaraugus Co., NY. They are still there in 1920 & 1930.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Charles & Samantha and six of their children are living at Athol, Kootenai Co., ID. According to the census data, they have been married 24 years; Samantha has had 7 children, of whom 7 are still living. So, there must be another child somewhere.

Possibly they had a daughter named Lucy Amanda (b 3 Aug 1880 in Webster City, Hamilton Co., IA; d 9 Feb 1960 in Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA; md Asa Harkness b 10 Jun 1870 Sutherland, O'Brien Co., IA; md 5 Apr 1897 in Vermillion, Clay Co., SD. (This needs more research. Asa & Lucy had a daughter named Samantha, so that fact, and Lucy's birthplace, are strong clues.) See also note for daughter Libby.

In 1910 they are still at Athol, with Rhoda & Norman/Newman S. Their adult daughter Jerusha is listed on a different census sheet, although she is living in town and is a public school teacher. Perhaps she boards with different families (?).

Another genealogy has Charles's date of death as 19 Jul 1938, at Orafina, Clearwater Co., ID. This needs more research.

An online genealogy lists these two daughters: Lucy Amanda 3 Aug 1880 (Webster City, IA) - 9 Feb 1960, and Mary Elizabeth 17 Jul 1882 (Webster City, IA) - 12 Dec 1975 (Portland, OR). I see Libby in the 1900 census, but with a different birthdate, and no Lucy. This family needs more research.
