5201 | Joseph's death record says he was born in Tiverton, occupation mariner, and names his parents as Alfred and Sarah Rounds, also born in Tiverton. He died of paralysis at age 77y 5m 2d. This agrees with his birth date. Although his birth record is listed in the New Bedford transcriptions, all other records agree that Joseph was born in RI. In the 1820 census, the family is at Tiverton, RI: FWM 3<10, 1 26-44; FWF 2<10, 1 26-44. In the 1830 census, there is only one Rounds family listed at Dartmouth, MA. This is the family of Joseph Rounds: FWM 2 15-19, 1 40-49; FWF 1<5, 1 5-9, 1 10-14, 1 30-39. In the 1840 census, the family of Joseph Rounds at Dartmouth, MA, is as follows (there are 2 Joseph Rounds families in in that census): FWM 1<5, 1 5-9, 1 20-29, 1 50-59; FWF 1 10-14, 1 15-19, 1 20-29, 1 40-49. One person is employed in the navigation of the ocean. In the 1850 federal census, the family is still at Dartmouth: Joseph 65 RI farmer, Mary 56 RI, Mary 29 RI, Abby E. 20 MA, Andrew 19 MA sailor, David C. 13. In the 1855 MA state census, the family is still at Dartmouth: Joseph 70 farmer, Mary 61, David 19 farmer. In the 1860 federal census, the family is at Dartmouth as follows: Joseph 75 RI laborer, Mary 66 RI, David 23 MA. The post office for them was North Dartmouth. I have found the likely location where they lived, based on an 1852 map which shows them living on Slocum Rd. near the corner of what is now Sharp St., in North Dartmouth. The daughter in the 1820 census has been found to be Sarah, listed as one of Joseph's children in his probate records. A probate document dated 15 Oct 1868 (found online and shared by Dulcie Stewart) is for Joseph Rounds "who last dwelt in Dartmouth" and died on 6 Aug 1862, "leaving a widow, whose name is Mary Rounds (since deceased)"; lists next of kin, all surname Rounds except one: John of Dartmouth, Mary A. of Dartmouth, Abby E. also of Dartmouth, Sarah A. Tripp widow of Godfrey R. Tripp (deceased) of New Bedford, Charles A. "last known of the Feegee Islands now supposed to be dead," David C. of Wheelen Michigan, Joseph Jr. "supposed to be dead as he has not been heard from in twenty years, all the above are children of said deceased." The executor of the estate was Isaac H. Coe. The document was signed by John Rounds, Sarah A. Tripp, and Mary A. Rounds. (Thanks to Cousin Dulcie for finding the image of this document; accessible at americanancestors.org) | Rounds, Joseph (I00771)

|
5211 | Joseph's will, dated 1735, mentions his wife Martha; 6 sons -- Joseph (Jr.), William, Samuel (b. 6 Jan 1704, d. 1790), John, Robert, & Thomas; and 3 daughters -- Phebe (Pitcher), Hannah, & Martha. He may have married first to a Phebe Unknown. I have estimated the birth years of some of Joseph's children. Interestingly, there was another Joseph Hopkins whose will was proved/probated 1 Sept. 1740 at Scituate, RI. He also mentions a wife Martha. An online genealogy has his parents as William & Hannah (Andrews) Hopkins of Roxbury, MA. However, the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 15, p. 303, identifies his parents as Thomas & Sarah. (needs more research) | Hopkins, Joseph (I10058)

5217 | Joshua was a Captain in the 1st Johnston Co., 1788; purchased land in Glen's Tract, Herkimer Co., NY, 1792. He is listed in the 1777 Military Census at Johnston, RI, along with his father Joshua and brother Stephen. Joshua and Anne Remington signed the following deeds at Johnston: p 83; 6 Nov 1790 Joshua Remington of Johnston Esq received 36 L 6 shillings from Charles Dyer of Cranston for "the northerly part of a tract of land that I bought of John C. Greene" also grants a privilege to pass thro Caleb Remington's land to and from the road that leads to Providence with teams; land sold by me to Caleb Remington on or about 4 Aug 1788. Signed by Joshua and Anne Remington p 105, 106; 23 Mar 1791 Joshua Remington of Johnston received 94 L 10 shillings 6 pence from David Knap of Warwick for 20 acres, the southerly part of homestead farm of Joshua Remington late of Johnston dec'd. |
5219 | Josiah & John were twins. The DAR Patriot Index has his date of birth as 4 Feb 1746. He may be the Josiah Remington in the 1790 census at Westfield, Hampshire Co., MA. David Remington is listed with him -- possibly a nephew, son of Daniel II. Also in the same town is Jabez Remington, possibly a brother or cousin. The 1810 Federal Census in NY lists Josiah & Sinecer Rimmington at Cambridge, Washington Co. Seneca is possibly the son of Daniel II (not confirmed), and if true, would be Josiah's nephew. The 1810 Federal Census for Cambridge, Washington Co., NY, has three Remington families or heads of families: Jabez, Josiah, & Severa (Seneca). Josiah and Jabez are listed together. Perhaps that is this particular Josiah (age 45+ in the census), and Jabez is Jabal, his son (age 26-44). These family groups need more research. | Remington, Josiah (I03464)

BSR says Josiah's parents were William & Christine Arnold. A genealogy at Rootsweb's Worldconnect has his parents as William Arnold & Hannah Nichols. Since there were several Josiah Arnolds, it is confusing, and Maplet's husband may be one of the others of the same name. | Arnold, Captain Josiah (I11084)

Grandson Augustus Ellis was the son of Ayres Ellis. Other grandchildren were Rufus and Gideon Ellis, sons of Gideon, grandson Wait Ellis, granddaughters Sarah Strait, Alce Wait, and Ellen Wood (WG Wills, 2:112-116). | Ellis, Judith (I24520)

|
5241 | Julia was the only one of the siblings to remain single. Dad Remington was told that it was this "Aunt Julia" (his father Chester's aunt, and sister of grandmother Angeretta) whose favorite name was Norman, and thus he was named Norman in 1918. | Whitford, Julia Erespa (I00147)
|
5242 | Julia's maiden name as Pickard was given to me by Nancy Olejniczak. In the Federal Census of 1900, Julia Remington is a widow age 80, living at Camillus, Onondaga Co., NY, with son Charles 42.
