6554 She was the daughter of J. Carr of Jamestown. She is probably the Phebe Remington mentioned in the will of George Tew of Jamestown, dated 9 March 1801.

Her age at death (69) does not agree with stated birth date (1762). If the years are correct, she would have been 70 when she died.
Carr, Phebe R. (I04188)

6555 She was the second wife of Anthony Paine. In a receipt from his will, she is referred to as Rose Weeden. She may have remarried to a Mr. Weeden, or else that was her maiden name. FRENCH, Rose (I05214)

6557 She was the widow of John Gore of Boston when she married Nathaniel Hubbard.

The will of John Gore mentions his dearly loved wife Rebecca, who is also the Executrix. One of the estate documents mentions Rebecca Hobbard formerly Gore, Nathaniel Hobbard Esq. of Dorchester, and Richard Hobbard of Boston gentleman; dated 22 Sep 1726. Their signatures all spell the surname as Hubbard.

6565 Sieur Gysbert Updyke was an officer of the Dutch West India Company. He probably came to Long Island from Amsterdam about 1630. In time he owned extensive land areas in and around present-day New York City; Hempstead, Long Island; Cow's Neck; and Coney Island. He held several positions of leadership at Long Island and New Amsterdam, and was also an innkeeper. He made frequent trips to the "Block House" in Narragansett Country, RI. This was Richard Smith's trading post (now known as "Smith's Castle" on Post Road near Wickford).

He died after 10 April 1662. Very possibly he came to RI after the surrender of New Amsterdam to the English in 1664, and eventually died here.
Updyke, Gysbert (I07750)

6566 Silas is mentioned as being under 21 in the will of his grandfather John Greene, dated 15 Aug 1754.His will mentions his wife and ten children by name (see "Rhode Island Genealogical Register" Vol. 4, #2, pp. 188 & 189) . Matteson, Silas (I09320)

6567 Silas was buried on the 11th. Elder John Gorton preached at his funeral, on Amos 4:12. He was "Captain Silas Cooke, late of Warwick."

Silas was sometimes referred to as Silas, Jr. Does that simply mean he was a younger one of two in the area? It his father was Peleg, perhaps he had an uncle named Silas?
Cooke, Silas Jr. (I02929)

6568 Simeon Smith was a Charter Member of the Pawtuxet Rangers (Oct 1774).

He was Master of Providence-based privateer brig, Hope, 1781. (source: Field, Edward; State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations at the End of the Century: A History. Boston, Mason Publishing Co. 1902, Vol II, pp424-430 List of Privateersmen from Providence)

He was a Revolutionary War Pensioner (File # S21492).

Simeon's will was dated 3 February 1836, and proved 27 May 1843 at Cranston, RI. In it he mentions sons Simeon Jr., Nicholas, Moses, Aaron, & Remington. He speaks of his daughters, but not by name. Also mentioned are grandchildren Nathaniel P. Smith, John R. Harris, & Charlotte P. Thomas.

Simeon died at age 97, the oldest resident of Pawtuxet at the time. A veteran of the Revolution, he was loyal to the cause of liberty and took his civic privileges seriously. It was reported that in the last election, he traveled 5 miles to vote.

A death notice was printed in the Brooklyn Eagle, 9 March 1843.

He may have married first to Freelove Fenner, b. 13 July 1743. She married Capt. Simon Smith on 23 March 1766 at Providence, RI. However, that may have been another individual with a similar name born around the same time. He was generally referred to as Capt. Simeon Smith. (Is he the Simeon Smith who also married Freelove Fenner? Probably; but this needs more research; there was another Simeon Smith of Burrillville/Glocester; both were Rev. War pensioners.)
Smith, Captain Simeon Sr. (I10590)

6569 Simeon was s/o Amos & Hannah. Reynolds, Simeon (I25511)

6570 Since John Hull was a Quaker and Damaris Cary was a Congregationalist, their marriage was performed "out of meeting." The officiant was Capt. Hull's brother Dr. Tiddeman Hull, then Chief Magistrate and Warden of Jamestown. Family F04338

6571 Since there is a considerable space between the children in this family, I suppose there is a possibility that Homer is a son of Joel & Armina's daughter Elvira. Remington, Homer E. (I18249)

6572 Sion's will was dated 22 March 1841 at Coventry, RI. Arnold, Sion (I11977)

6573 Sisson Nichols and wife Marcy of Stephentown, NY, are mentioned in Town Council Records of Exeter, RI, 26 Oct 1793, among the heirs of Anthony Shaw, deceased. Nichols, Sisson (I29353)

6574 SISSON Sarah, wife, of George, died in her 71st year, July 17, 1718; Town Page Detail: Death (Vol. 1 : Pg. 53), Portsmouth, RI.

According to the Genealogical Dictionary of RI by John Osborne Austin, Sarah was d/o Thomas Lawton.
Lawton, Sarah (I27211)

6575 Sisson was named after his uncle Sisson Nichols who married Marcy Shaw. Shaw, Sisson Nichols (I29311)

6576 SK land evidence dated 12 Jan 1722/3 identifies Ebenezer as "of Prudence Island." In 1724 he was "of Portsmouth" when he was asked by SK to take over the guardianship of his deceased brother Ephraim's children.

Ebenezer deeded land to his son Ebenezer Jr. of SK on 4 Sep 1736. This included rights to the following: land, ferry house, staple ware house, wharfs, ferry boat, and freight boat. (also see notes for father Jeremiah)

Ebenezer and Abigail signed a deed of sale on 23 Apr 1737, SK; they sold land to John Gardner of SK.

I have made an assumption that he is the Ebenezer Smith who was a son of Jeremiah & Mary Smith of Prudence Island. It is clear from land evidence and court records that some members of this family later moved to Kingstown and South Kingstown.

Ebenezer is mentioned by his mother Mary in SK land evidence.

I have roughly estimated Ebenezer's year of birth.

6593 Some family trees have Daniel's wife as Mercy Remington.

See notes for Daniel's grandfather John.

From the book "The Correspondence of the Colonial Governors of Rhode Island, 1723-1775" (Google Books), p 329, "Fones was an enterprising sea captain who represented North Kingstown in the General Assembly. He was sent to Cape Breton with the Connecticut transports, in command of the Rhode Island colony sloop, Tartar, and there distinguished himself by intercepting at Famme Goose Bay a force of 1200 French and Indians, who were advancing from Annapolis to the relief of Louisburg. This was two days before the surrender of the fortress."

From the book Mayflower Families Through Five Generations, Vol 3 p 94 (pub 1980 by General Society of Mayflower Descendants, ed Anne Borden Harding): "He m. Mercy ----- perhaps 1743 - 1747. The identity of his wife, the birth place and dates of his children is [sic] not known . . . From 1744 to 1747 he commanded the RI colony sloop Tartar . . . he is referred to as mariner in his will."

The will of Capt. Daniel Fones of North Kingstown, dated 8 Apr 1790 and proved 9 Aug 1790, mentions son Daniel dec'd leaving widow Mary; daughters Mary w/o Edward Yorke of East Falmouth, Nova Scotia; Martha w/o Michael Spencer of East Greenwich, and their son Fones Spencer; granddaughter Margaret w/o William Helme; grandchildren -- children of Mary and probably dec'd son Daniel -- Cynthia, Christopher, Constant, Mary, Dutee, and Daniel.
Fones, Captain Daniel (I04978)

6594 Some family trees have her maiden name as Maxon; others say it was Harndell. Unknown, Rebecca (I05502)

6595 Some family trees have this Abigail Tripp as the wife of Benjamin Tanner. If so, she must have married him first (?). Tripp, Abigail (I06627)

6596 Some genealogies have 8 children for this couple. Comstock, Samuel (I28541)

6597 Some genealogies have Abigail's husband as Ezekiel. There is quite a lot of confusion concerning these two sisters, Abigail & Elizabeth. Perhaps they both married Ezekiel at some point. Or perhaps they both had sons named Daniel. Or perhaps Abigail really married Ezekiel, and Elizabeth married Elisha.

Some online genealogies show Daniel as the probable son of Abigail. However, Ezekiel's will definitely mentions a son named Daniel. Which Daniel had a daughter Abigail who married Hiram Greene (if either)?

This is a puzzle that needs more research.
Greene, Abigail (I09301)

6598 Some genealogies have as many as 11 children for this couple -- needs more research.

Daniel's first wife, name unknown, died before 1 August 1661, when her gravesite was referred to in a land document.
WILCOX, Daniel (I05989)

6599 Some genealogies have Elizabeth's twin sister Mary as the one who married John Noble & Jonathan Remington. Were they one and the same person? I am tentatively making them one person, pending more research.

Jonathan was her first cousin.
Remington, Elizabeth Mary (I08057)

6600 Some genealogies have her as Anne Corey, but there was a much later marriage of a Thomas Allen and Anne Corey.

Daniel Gould Allen in his Genealogy of the Allen Family says she is Anne or Annie Cory; on another page he identifies her as Mary Cory (p 91).
Unknown, Ann (I13137)
