7251 The will of Sylvester Sweet, yeoman, advanced in life, is dated 7 Mar 1804, proved 25 Jan 1806 at East Greenwich. It mentions wife Dorcas; sons James, Samuel, Thomas, Sylvester dec'd, & Elisha; and daughters Tabitha Sweet, Lydia w/o John Johnson, Almy w/o Amos Vaughn, Wait w/o George Wightman, Mary w/o Charles (should read Pardon) Tillinghast, Sarah w/o William Sleid, and susannah w/o Charles Sleid; grandson Luther Sweet s/o son Sylvester dec'd. Sweet, Deacon Sylvester (I05839)

7252 The will of Thankful Collins of Warwick, yeoman, is dated 14 Feb 1757 and was proved 12 Sep 1757. It mentions his son Thomas; and daughters Elizabeth Remington, Sarah Collins, & Lydia Collins.

There is a notation in James N. Arnold's VRs concerning three of the children of Thankful -- Elizabeth, Sarah, & Thomas -- concerning a birth (or baptism?) at Narragansett on 12 May 1740.
Collins, Thankful (I20501)

7253 The will of Thomas Colgrove of WG, yeoman, dated 3 Dec 1811, proved 25 Apr 1814 at WG, mentions but does not name his living wife; sons Jesse & Thomas; daughters Elizabeth Carr and Rachel Whaley; son-in-law Job Whaley. Colgrove, Thomas (I09246)

7254 The will of Thomas Collins of Warwick, RI, is dated 7 Mar 1725/6, and it was proved 18 Mar 1725/6. The will mentions his wife Mary: sons Elizur, William (dec'd), Thomas, Samuell (under age), & Thankful; and daughters Sarah Ruttenborge, Ann Collins, & Abigail Collins (under 18).

I have made an assumption that the Thomas Collins who married Abigail, Anna, & Mary is the son of Elizur & Sarah whose birth is in the Warwick records: "Collins Thomas, of Lieut. Ellyza and Sarah, Oct. 26, 1664."
Collins, Thomas (I20505)

7255 The will of Thomas Durfee of Portsmouth, dated 4 Feb 1709/10, proved 17 July 1712, mentions wife Deliverance; sons Richard (eldest), Thomas, William, Richard (dec'd), and Benjamin (youngest); daughters Patience Tallman and Deliverance Durfee (youngest); grandsons, sons of Richard: Richard & Thomas.

"Thomas DURFEE (742) was born in 1643 in England. LDS Family Search Ancestral File indicates that he was born Oct 1643 in Portsmouth, RI, where he was also chistened. (AFN: 9M2P-N5 & film # 1760781) Bonnie Hubbard's material indicates that he was born in England in 1643. He died on 14 Jul 1712 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI. He was buried in Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI. (LDS Family Search Ancestral File, AFN: 9M2P-N5) IMMIGRANT - "The Durfee article in Boyer, p. 183, says that there were no Durfees in England before 1628 nor after 1723 and that they were probably French Huguenot. The first in America was Thomas, born in England in 1643. Family tradition (Reed) says he came to Portsmouth in 1660 and 'The recorded evidence of his appearing at the session of the Colonial General Assembly of Rhode Island, in October 1664, carries unmistakable proof of his presence in the Colony many months previous to that session.' The family wasn't admitting it even as late as 1902 but Boyer describes the proof: 'In 1664 the 'insoelent carriadge of Thomas Durfee with the sayd [Peter] Tallmans wife' was brought to the attention of the Rhode Island General Assembly {RCRI, 2:85], and on 3 May 1665 Peter Tallman was given a divorce from his wife as she admitted she had had a child 'begotten by another man' [RCRI, 2:123].' Thomas probably came as a redemptioner. Such a person was one who couldn't pay his passage and was sold at auction for the lowest term of years for which anyone would take him. Thomas was admitted a freeman of Portsmouth in 1673 and served on a petit jury in 1677. He was elected Constable for one year terms in 1687 and 1690. He was chosen one of the Overseers of the Poor in 1691 and made a Deputy that same year and again in 1694. He was elected to the town council in 1692 and again in 1694. It appears that the townspeople had forgiven if not forgotten his sin. I wonder what Peter Tallman was like -- in 1683 he had moved to Guilford, near New Haven, Connecticut, and sold eight acres of Portsmouth land to Thomas Durfee for
Durfee, Thomas (I22115)

7256 The will of Thomas Matteson, of Coventry, Esquire, is dated 14 March 1793 and proved 13 April 1793. It mentions his wife Susannah (whom I assume to be his second wife); sons Thomas, Francis, David, John, Henry, Job, Richard (dec'd.), & Solomon; daughters Sarah Colvin, Phebe Whaley, Hannah Tyler, Elizabeth Matteson, & Marcy Matteson; and heirs of deceased son Richard: Levi, Alden, Joanna, & Richard. Matteson, Thomas Sr. (I11454)

7257 The will of Thomas Nichols of East Greenwich is dated 7 Dec 1738 and proved 30 Nov 1745. It mentions sons James, and Thomas dec'd; dtr Frances Peirce, widow; other daughters not named; son-in-law Giles Peirce; son-in-law Joseph Edmunds of Warwick; grandson Thomas Edmunds; other family members.

I have made an assumption that he is the Thomas Nichols born to Thomas & Hannah Nichols, 6 Aug 1660 recorded at North Kingstown. The time period is right; this seems to be confirmed by John Osborne Austin's "Genealogical Dictionary of RI" p 138.
Nichols, Thomas (I12083)

7258 The will of Thomas Parker of Scituate, dated 29 Jan 1839 and proved 4 May 1839, mentions his wife Susannah; sons Arnold, Thomas, & Joseph; and daughters Polly Angell, Isabel Remington, & Mahala Allen. Parker, Thomas (I15209)

7259 The will of Thomas Rogers of Newport is dated 28 Nov 1716 and proved 7 Dec 1719. In it, Thomas mentions his age as 77; wife Sarah, and the following children: James, Thomas, John, Jeremiah, Joseph, Daniel, Sarah Wells, Elizabeth Bailey, and Abigail Rogers.

I have roughly estimated the birth years of Thomas & Sarah's children.
Rogers, Thomas (I01564)

7260 The will of Thomas Rogers of Westerly, RI, dated 20 Feb 1736, mentions wife Anna, and the following children: Peleg, Job, Anna George, Mary Richmond, Elizabeth Wheelen, Sarah Maxson dec'd, Ruth Willcox, Leah Rogers, Priscilla Hill, Rebeckah Rogers, and Penelope Mackcoon. Rogers, Thomas (I24329)

7261 The will of Waity Holden of Warwick, singlewoman, mentions her father Randall Holden, and sisters Naomi Holden, Elizabeth (w/o Samuel Low), and about six nieces and nephews. Holden, Waity (I17670)

7262 The will of William Havens of Portsmouth is dated 13 March 1680, proved 25 Sep 1683. It mentions wife Dennis; 5 sons: John, Thomas, Robert, George, & William: and 8 dtrs: Sarah Tiler, Mary Cook, Ruth Cards, Dinah, Elizabeth, Martha, Rebecca, & Margaret Havens.

I have roughly estimated his date of marriage and the birth years of his children.
Havens, William (I03342)

7263 The will of William Munroe of Bristol, dated 16 Apr 1746 and proved 12 May 1746, mentions Mary "the wife of my youth"; brother (in-law) John Lindzey; sons William, Bennett, & Nathaniel; daughters Mary (w/o James Gibbs) & Susannah (w/o Jeremiah Willson); & brother Benjamin Munroe. Munroe, William (I20620)

7264 The will of William Willcox of SK, yeoman advanced in yrs, is dated 27 Feb 1807, proved 8 May 1810. It mentions his late wife Amy; brothers Jeremiah & Robert; sister Sarah Rogers; Sylvester Willcox s/o bro Robert; also Robert Willcox s/o Sylvester and grandson of my bro Robert; Mary & Amy, dtrs of said Sylvester; several other names. Wilcox, William (I26984)

7265 The will of William Wood of Glocester, RI, dated 1 Aug 1761 and proved 20 June 1763, mentions wife Anne; sons Charles under 21, Thomas, Humphrey, and John; and daughters Anne, Mary, and Elizabeth. Wood, William (I20519)

7266 The wills of Mary's father and grandfather appear to state that Mary is the wife of Porter Reynolds. Has Peter been misread for Porter, or vice versa? The 1850 Federal Census clearly reads Peter. (needs more research)

In 1850 "Peter" & Mary Reynolds are living at Greenwich, Washington Co., NY, with their six children, along with several other individuals who may be boarders and/or farm workers.
Reynolds, Porter Hanks (I08968)

7267 The year of William's birth is recorded at Tiverton, but he may not have been born there, as it is recorded along with the birth year of his wife, and the births of all his children. Tiverton VRs record births of 7 children to this couple: Sarah, Ann, Joseph, Thomas, Nathaniel, Demarias, & Jonathan. Earle, William (I03711)

7268 The years of birth and death came from Boyd Scott Remington's chart; the day and month for each came from Rootsweb's Worldconnect (Frank Fisher's family tree). Remington, Grace Jessie Kate (I08769)

7269 Their date of marriage is given as 10 Oct 1883 in "Dictionary of American Biography." Family F01297

7270 Their marriage license, issued in Wells County and dated 1/13/1859, is recorded in Wells County Marriage Record C-P, Page 334.

Family F10413

7271 Their marriage record is found in Warwick Marriages 1850 - 1882, Vol. 1. According to the entry, Peacy was 20 years old, and William was 42. It was his third marriage. Family F00173

7272 Their marriage was published in the "Newport Mercury" 5 April 1796.

William & Mary had at least 7 children. (See "Descendants of Roger Williams" Book I, p. 163; also "Genealogy of Zachariah Rhodes," p. 279.)
Family F00943

7273 Their three children were still living as of 2004. The oldest, Margaret, died in Nov 2004 at the age of 94. Family F00149

7274 Theirs was the second marriage performed by Elder John Gorton (see "Elder John Gorton and the Six Principle Baptist Church of East Greenwich" by Cherry Fletcher Bamberg, pub. 2001 by RI Genealogical Society). Family F02117

7275 Theodore Foster was a Congressman. Foster, Theodore (I14562)

7276 Theodosia was most likely named after her maternal grandmother, Theodosia Hopkins.

"Theodocia Remington widow of Daniel Remington, dec" is mentioned in the will of Thomas Holden of Warwick dated 14 Oct 1820.

Several years after Daniel died, she married Jonathan Nichols, widower of her sister Mary.
Wightman, Theodosia (I04780)

7277 There are at least two branches of the Chaffey family who settled in Vermont. The line from Nathaniel Chafee (III) and Susanna Carpenter (his 2nd wife), through their son Benjamin, then Daniel, then George Daniel, spell the surname with one F: CHAFEE. These families are based in the Pittsford, VT, area.

The other Vermont family line, descended from Nathaniel III's son Comfort, by his first wife (Ruth Mansfield), spell the name with two Fs: CHAFFEE. This branch settled in the Berkshire, VT, area.

Comfort is a male given name in the Chaffee family, first seen as the eldest son (b. 1735) of Nathaniel, and subsequently in succeeding generations of his line. It also appears on the family tree as the father of Chloe Pearce, the wife of Stephen Chafee, who was a son of Levi.
Chafee, Nathaniel (I00568)

7278 There are conflicting dates for the death of Mary. Remington, Mary (I08741)

7279 There are indications that William may have married also Jemima Hathaway and/or Susannah (?). SHERMAN, William (I02383)

7280 There are several Adelines on our family tree:
Adeline Tripp (Manchester) Remington (1835 - 1893)
Hannah Adeline G. Remington (1864 - 1942)
Adeline G. Turner (1887 - 1962)
Adeline G. Randall (1906 - 2003)
Adeline G. Randall (1909 - 1984)
Adeline G. Freelove (1944 - )
Curry, Adeline Faith (I26223)

7281 There are several William Earles living at the same time, so it is difficult to determine if this marriage pertains to this particular individual. However, the marriage record says he is William Earle of Portsmouth, and she is Sarah Chase of Freetown (MA); so I am making an assumption that it belongs here. Earle, William (I27723)

7282 There are so many Philip Arnolds and I don't know for sure if I have the correct spouses with the correct Philip Arnolds. The Arnold families need more research to confirm these relationships. See all my noters and sources. Arnold, Philip (I08776)

7283 There are some researchers who think that Moses Barber's second wife was Susanna Wait, not Susanna West. For a discussion of this, see "A Line of Descent From Moses Barber" in the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 1, No. 2.

Moses & Susanna had 14 children.
Barber, Moses (I03117)

7284 There are three sons under age 10 in the 1820 census. I don't know the name of this one. In 1830 there are two sons age 15-19, so probably this one died. Rounds, Son (I28833)

7285 There are two birth records for William Hubbard(s) at Dorchester; one 26 Oct 1719 and the other 17 Jan 1720 -- whcih must be 1721 (old-style date). Hubbard, William (I28616)

7286 There are two marriage records for Richard Phillips and Abigail Haskell in New Gloucester, ME. One is dated 16 Nov 1776 and the other is dated 12 Dec 1777. Family F10573

7287 There is a bit of confusion between the census records and the cemetery data. Was there one son George, or two? Possibly the dates on the gravestone were misread. The RI Cemetery Database has the dates for George W. Jenckes as c.1859 - 15 Aug 1859. However, he was clearly born in 1850, as he is in the census that year as four months old. So, either he really died in August 1850, or there was a second son George, and both died young. Jenckes, George W. (I13694)

7288 There is a Clark Hall age 26 living at Lorrain, NY, in 1850. I feel that his name must have some connection to Clark H. Remington. Perhaps they share a common ancestor.

In 1840 he is C. H. Remington, living near Jonathan Remington at Lorraine.

C. H. Remington and family are at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY, in 1840. Also there is Johnathan Remington.
Remington, Clark Hall (I09643)

7289 There is a death record at Seekonk for "Joseph Munro, son of Joseph," who died in May 1863 at age 78. I am making an assumption that it was this particular Joseph. Munroe, Joseph Jr. (I16531)

7290 There is a discrepancy in the dates I have been given. One genealogy says Oscar drowned in Otter Creek 28 Apr 1878. However, another says he was married 29 Dec 1878. Obviously, at least one of these is incorrect. Remington, Oscar E. (I16448)

7291 There is a Stephan Remington, b.c. 1796 RI, living at Fall River, MA, on the 1880 Federal Census. Is that this individual? Very possibly. In the RI Cemetery Database, there is a Stephen S. Remington c.1794 - 23 Nov 1812, buried at the Arnold-Pawtuxet Burial Yard. Were there three different Stephen Remingtons born around the same time in RI? Remington, Stephen (I08848)

7292 There is an Amos Remington in the 1790 Federal Census at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT: 3 FWM<16, 1 FWM>16, 4 FWF. This implies that there were three sons and three daughters in the household.

He may be the Amos Remington who married Julette Tower (both of Worthington, MA) on 23 Oct 1807 (in VRs of Cummington, MA).

He may also be the Amos Remington (of Chesterfield, MA) who married Sally Pettingill (of Cummington, MA), int. filed at Cummington 11 Nov 1811.

(source: "The Vital Records of Cummington, MA 1762-1900" by William W. Streeter & Daphne H. Morris, p. 148)

According to a family tree at Rootsweb, Julette was born c 1783, which would make her the age to be Amos's daughter. Perhaps Amos had a son named Amos, Jr. (?).
Remington, Amos (2) (I08046)

7293 There is another George W. Sherman buried in the same cemetery, with dates given as 1811 - 1895. I have chosen the c. 1814 date because it agrees with other records. Sherman, George W. (I04820)

7294 There is some uncertainly as to whether Elizabeth was the wife of William, and therefore whether she is the mother of Robert. GRANT, Elizabeth (I01822)

7295 There is some uncertainty as to whether John was from England or Germany. Some family researchers say he came from Great Canford, Dorsetshire, England, arriving at Massachusetts Bay around the time of John Winthrop's arrival in 1630. However, there is a family tradition passed down by some descendants that Henry was from Germany, and came to Boston on a Dutch ship in 1635. For a full discussion of this, see pages 30 - 33 in "The Luther Genealogy." (available at the Swansea, MA, library and elsewhere)

Capt. John Luther's name first appears in the Taunton Purchase of 1637, in which he is listed as one of the 46 purchasers of land in a transaction between Elizabeth Pole's (Poole's) company and Massasoit. Miss Pole was from Dorchester, England. John Luther was assigned 6 shares, consisting of about 9 (or 90) acres in Swansea.

In 1642 John left Swansea and became one of the first settlers of Gloucester. A mariner employed by a Boston merchant, he was killed by Indians on a trading voyage to Delaware Bay.
LUTHER, Captain John (I19677)

7296 There is some very interesting historical information on Joshua at the Graves family web site: http://www.gravesfa.org/gen166.htm Graves, Joshua (I19066)

7297 There is strong speculation that Esther & Mary may have been twins, since the first three children seem to have been born so close together. "Soule descendants have shown a strong genetic trait of twinning." (see "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations" Vol. 3 , George Soule, p. 14)

Jeremiah & Mary had two sets of twins.

Mary Gifford, wife of Jeremiah, is mentioned by name in her father's will of 1723.

Mary died after her son Gideon's will of 14 Apr 1760.
Wright, Mary (I01751)

7298 There is strong speculation that Esther & Mary may have been twins, since the first three children seem to have been born so close together. "Soule descendants have shown a strong genetic trait of twinning." (see "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations" Vol. 3 , George Soule, p. 14) Wright, Esther (I17282)

7299 There is uncertainty as to the identity and birth dates of some of Joseph's children, other than Lydia. Their names have been partially or totally burned off the original records at North Kingstown, so various genealogies show different names. Whitford, Joseph (I01288)

7300 There is uncertainty as to which Ruth Briggs was the wife of Joseph N. Remington. There were two Ruths of the same name, born the same year, both apparently in Rhode Island -- and, it so happens that they were first cousins. However, it seems very possible that Joseph's wife was this one, as she was born in East Greenwich, as Joseph was.

Interestingly, Ruth's birth entry and Joseph's birth entry are on facing pages in the old record book of births in East Greenwich.

So, the birth date and parent data for Joseph's wife are based on an assumption, subject to further research. In any case, the two Ruths have the same grandparents in the Briggs ancestral line. Data on the other Ruth Briggs can also be found on this family tree, since she not only ties into the Briggs line, but also is a descendant of the Bailey family, who are in our own direct ancestry.

Any further information on this marriage is welcomed.
Briggs, Ruth (I07169)
