Notes - Hugh Bailey was made a freeman of the Colony at Newport 2 May 1702. He came to East Greenwich from Newport sometime between 1696 and 1702. It has been reported that all of his children were by his first wife, Anna. His second wife was named Abigail Williams. However, the town records in East Greenwich suggest that he may have had a second wife named Ann, because while the birth entry for William says "eldest son of Hugh and Anna," the entry for Samuel says "eldest son of Hugh and Ann." The seven-year gap between the first two sons may allow for this possibility, also. Information on his family can be found in "The History of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, 1677-1960, With Related Genealogy" by Martha R. McPartland, p. 264; and in "Records of the Bailey Family" by Hannah C. (Bailey) Hopkins.
