- According to Les Ralston, James is the only Rhode Islander known to have fought for the Confederacy. He served in the 50th GA Infantry. When war broke out he was staying with his sister in Thomas County. His sister was married to Edward Remington. James served under Peter McGlashan who later became mayor of Thomasville. As of 1920 he was a resident of Savannah, GA.
