From the obituary: Fred grew up and was educated in Salem, OR. During the Depression he owned and operated a toy store in Chicago. After Fred married Gladys in 1935, they moved to OR, where he worked as a bookkeeper and assistant school superintendent. Fred served in the Navy in World War II, after which the family settled in Portland, OR, where he was an insurance agent. Fred was a member of the Gideon Organization and was active in prison ministries. His second marriage was to Irene, widow of one of his former business associates.
