• Notes

  I have made an assumption that this Joseph Ellsbree living at Fall River in the 1850 Federal Census is a son of Joshua & Rhoda (Brightman) Elsbree. Joseph and his family are living near "Rhoda Ellsbree," age 77, who is living with Samuel Brightman & family, near several other Brightman families. Joseph has a son named Henry, which is one clue that he belongs in this family, since Rhoda's father was Henry Brightman. In 1850 he is age 30 and his wife Laura is 34. They have five children: Joseph A. 12, Henry M. 10, Adelaide J. 7, John F. 5, & Hannah J. 2, all born MA. In 1860 the family is still at Fall River, MA: Joseph 48, Laura 36, Adelaide I. 17, John F. 14, & Hannah J. 13. Also in the household are Lorenzo D. White 25 VT, & Ariadne 7 MA. It is not clear what Ariadne's last name is, but perhaps she is a younger daughter of Joseph & Laura, since they had a twin of that name who died. The death record of Joseph Elsbree gives his date of death as 17 Aug 1886, at age 74 y 5 m 27 d; residence 53 Elsbree in Fall River; occupation farmer; cause of death was stomach cancer; parents identified as Joshua and Rhoda.
