  • Notes 
    • Allen's father was Sylvester Johnson, who was engaged to Mercy. However, he and Mercy quarreled and they never married. Allen went to PA with his mother, uncle, and grandparents around 1830. (source: RI Genealogical Register, Vol 8 No 1, page 11, in an article entitled "Descendants of Edward Kettle.")

      In the 1850 Federal Census, Allen and Eunice, ages 26 RI & 21 NY, are living at Abington, Luzerne Co., PA. They have a son Stephen, age 2 months. Also in the same town are Allen's grandparents, Silas & Margaret, as well as his mother Mercy and uncle Green. The family is listed next to Henry Gardner and family (another RI individual).
