  • Notes 
    • In the Federal Census of 1850, Josephine age 7 and her brother Jephtha age 11 are living in Tiverton, RI, with Edward & Patience Simmons. Edward and Patience may be their paternal grandparents; however, this needs more research to confirm. I think Patience's maiden name is Macomber. In the census they are living next to Benjamin Macomber and family.

      Both Jephtha 11 and Josephine 7 (also listed as Joseph 8) are listed with their mother and other siblings in Portsmouth, as well as being listed at Tiverton.

      Josephine's mother, Elizabeth, remarried to William H. Chitty in 1847. In the 1850 census Elizabeth and her second husband are living at Portsmouth, RI (indexed under Chitta); by 1860 they have moved to Block Island (indexed as Chittey).
