Notes - According to his death record, he died at age 87 y 2 m 25 d. It identifies his birthplace as Newport, RI, and his parents as Gideon and Belinda Cornell.
Consequently, I am not absolutely sure Gardner belongs to this couple, but some of the names of his children suggest that he does, as well as a connection to Beaufort, SC. Compare the names of his sons with his uncle John J., and with his uncle's two sons. I am wondering if the informant at his death gave the incorrect name of his mother. Since he died in old age, as a widower, it is possible that the informant at the time did not remember his mother's name correctly.
It is also possible that his father Gideon was married twice, with Belinda being a second wife.
