This is the birth date for Catherine given in my Great-grandma Chafee's writings. She said she got the info from her Aunt Ann. According to records online, that date of birth, 12 Feb 1804, is for a Catherine Smith, daughter of Joseph and Juliana Smith in Woolwich, Kent, England; christened 26 Feb 1804; denomination Scots church.

"Catherine, daughter of Joseph Smith, Sergeant Major in (?) Horse Brigade of the Royal Regiment of Artillery in the Parish of Woolwich and County of Kent, and of Juliana his wife was borne February 12th 1804 and Baptized February 26th 1804 by me John Blythe." (England & Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers, 1567-1970)

Her death record notes residence Charlestown. I believe this is a district of Manchester.

From Dad Remington: "You perhaps remember our mention of our Cousin Ida Abbey of Mankato, Minnesota. She was first cousin of my grandmother Chafee, because her mother was a sister of Grandma's father . . . Ida's mother, who had been widowed, operated a boarding house, and eventually married one of the boarders."

In the 1860 census, the family is in Attleboro as follows: Ann Farrar 35 England, Edward A. 5 RI, Charles E. 3 MA, and Herbert A. 1 MA. See notes for William, the 1865 MA State Census.

I can't find any of the family members in 1870.

Anna Abbey is in the 1880 Federal Census, age 56, living at Belgrade, Nicollet Co., MN. Her three children are with her: Edwin 25 RI, Charley 23 MA, and Ida 14 MA.

In 1885 Ann is age 62, still living in Belgrade, Nicollet, MN (Mankato Post Office); with her are Edwin A. Farrar 30 RI, Charles E. Farrar 28 MA, and Ida M. Abbey 19 MA.

in 1900, Ann Abbey is age 75, still living in North Mankato Village, Belgrade Township, MN, with her children Edwin A. Farrar 46 and Ida M. Abby 34.

I looks as if Ann and her second husband William parted ways; she went to MN while he stayed in New England. There are other men named William Abbey/Abby in he records, and I may have some of the info incorrect, but I don't think so.

I have a likely fourth marriage for William, to Matilda Wardle, as there's a daughter Emma Frances (Abby) Newell in the death records, also mentioned as half-sister to Elizabeth (Abby) Hall as informant in her death record. I am not sure if these were all official marriages.

Notes:

According to my great-grandma's writings, her father William "was only 13 years old when his mother died -- and he used to work in the factory as a weaver until he went to sea as a cabin boy and followed the sea until his family came to America -- and while they were all working in the factories of Hebronville, for one place, and Central Falls and Pawtucket, I think it was while my aunts -- my father's sisters -- were there, he would go into the mill to see them and my mother was working there also and it was there he met her first."

William probably came to America with his father and sister Mary c1847 (see notes for John Andrews).

In the 1860 Federal Census, William & Eliza J. Andrews, ages 27 & 23, are living at North Providence, RI. He is a weaver. They have two children: William H., 3, and Carrie J., 1 month. In 1870 the family is still at North Providence, Centredale Post Office District.

According to Mary's letter, her father William was in the Civil War, and also became an overseer at a mill in Centredale. She said his trade was "boss weaver" -- did she mean a manager of weavers?

His death record at Bristol, RI, identifies him as s/o John & Catherine. According to the record, he died at age 66.

William married Eliza Jane EDWARDS 2 Sep 1856, RI. Eliza (daughter of George EDWARDS and Abigail Abby WRAY) was born 4 Mar 1836, Clones, Monaghan, Ireland; died 2 Dec 1894, RI. [Group Sheet]

According to my great-grandmother's writings, after Mr. Lockwood's first wife died, Mary went to work for him as a housekeeper, and he later married her.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Mary and her husband Abraham Lockwood are living in Warwick, RI. She is age 65 and he is 68. They have been married for 8 years. According to the census data, Mary immigrated in 1847.

Abraham & Mary are still at Warwick in the census taken 27 Apr 1910, although Mary must have died shortly after this.

In the 1930 Federal Census, Ida is 63 and sill living at Belgrade, MN.

In 1940, Ida Abbey is age 72, a lodger, living in San Buenaventura, Ventura Co., CA, with Lillian Schutt and family,

In the 1900 Federal Census, William & Emma A. Andrews, ages 39 & 29, are living at 325 State St., Bristol, RI. They have a son William, age 4. Also in the home is Matilda Myer, mother-in-law, age 53, born Germany.

In 1910 the family is living at 685 Crosky in Philadelphia, PA; William H. Andrews is 50, Emma is 38, and son William is 14. William Sr.'s occupation appears to be Piano Polisher or (?) Polester. In 1920 they are at 273 Larchwood Ave. in Philadelphia, but they must have been to Florida because they have a 7-year-old daughter named Florida who was born in FL. William Sr.'s occupation is given as guard at U.S. Supply spot (?).

William died that year, 1920, on the 24th of some month -- I don't know which. I can't locate the other three family members in the 1930 census.

William married Emma Louise Seiffert Abt 1894. Emma (daughter of Matilda Unknown) was born Abt 1872, Germany; died Aft. 1 Apr 1940. [Group Sheet]

In the 1860 Federal Census, Carrie J. Andrews is 1 month old, living in her parents' household at North Providence, RI.

In the 1920 Federal Census, Clara Jenckes is age 59, widowed, and living on Putnam Pike in Johnston, RI, with her daughter Eliza, who is age 35. It says she was was born in RI, and both parents were born in England.

Clara married Daniel Sweet Jenckes Abt 1885. Daniel (son of George Nelson Jenckes and Eliza Ann Sweet) was born Feb 1855, Graniteville, Johnston, RI; died 1912; was buried , Jenckes Lot, Mathewson St., Graniteville, RI. [Group Sheet]

In 1900, the family is living in Pawtucket: James 36, Margaret 43, Charles 14, and Nora E. 13. James and Margaret have been married 15 years, and he is a motorman.

In 1910, the family is living in Central Falls.

James married Margaret Maggie Frances Barry 27 Nov 1884, Providence, RI. Margaret (daughter of Garrett Barry and Catherine Unknown) was born 28 Jun 1856, MA. [Group Sheet]

My dad says he was "Uncle Joe." Joe and his wife used to live in a farmhouse on Centerville Rd. right near the Rt. 2 overpass.

She was "Mamie" to Great-grandpa Chafee.

Mary was born in Lymansville, North Providence, which is now part of Pawtucket. Her original birth record is at the Pawtucket City Hall.

Her address at the time of her death was 9645 Green Verdugo Rd., Sunland, CA. According to a notation on the funeral memorial, Mary's grave is in Section 1, Div. 8, Lot 116.

My dad, Norman, saved many of the letters she wrote to my family when she lived in California in the mid-1950s. In one of them she writes: "Everything seems queer to me here in the West. It's lovely up here in these mountains though -- I only wish Grandpa could have lived long enough for the Lord to heal him -- and he take a little comfort in his old age. I am quite alone here in this house -- Frankie's trailer is quite near (and they look after me and do all my errands) so I don't have to leave the place. I am lonely at times -- and wish things could have been different. But God's spirit is here and in me. Bless his name. I am trying to be contented. It's the best all around -- for not any of my children could take the burden of me like Frankie."

She tells how Frank took her with him to Arizona for a fishing trip on the Colorado River. She writes: "It was some trip (but part of it was rough) and some of it was lovely -- would like to have had all my people here to enjoy it with me. Love to you all and God's blessings on you, Grandma Chafee" [this was a couple of months after her husband died]

In another letter, she says: "Laura writes -- she must have looked like Lois when she was a little girl. (Not quite) She was very light -- with hair very sunny and fine." In another letter she says something similar: "Laura thinks she must have looked like Lois (when she was little) (not quite) she had a look like her dad (even then) where the blue eyes come from (is away back -- so Grandma Chafee says -- in the Chafee family) as Grandma Chafee was a Monrow, with brown eyes -- and Grandpa Chafee's eyes were a dark grey, like Aunt Lena's. Well that's all I can remember about it. The blue eyes didn't come from the Andrews either (my father's were a light grey -- not blue -- so it will remain a mystery I guess). Love to all of you -- God's blessings on you all. Grandma Chafee"

Mary married Frank Paine CHAFEE 17 Jul 1896, Bristol, Bristol Co., RI. His draft registration of 1917-1918 says at age 21 he is single, an organist at the Strand Theater in Germantown, Philadelphia.

In the Federal Census of 1940, the family is living in Cape May, NJ: Wm H. Andrews 44 PA, Marie 29 MD, Dorothy 4 NJ. William's sister Florida Kates and family are living nearby, and their mother Emma Andrews.

When I was very young, we went to visit Eliza, or "Cousin Lida," on Jenckes Lane, off Route 44 in Graniteville, Johnston, RI.

In the 1920 Federal Census, Eliza is age 35, living with her widowed mother Clara Jenckes on Putnam Pike in Johnston, RI.

I believe Lida was a schoolteacher at Graniteville, RI. In the Johnston Museum there is a Graniteville School souvenir booklet dated 1911, and this names Miss Eliza M. Jenckes as one of three teachers there.

From my dad: "I know from what my mother told me that Lida began teaching (as I understood it) at the former Belknap School, which was opposite the Belknap Chapel on Geenville Avenue . . . I do know that after Lida returned to RI from New Britain, Conn., that she began teaching at Graniteville, and taught there until her retirement."

In the Federal Census of January 1920, William & Ruth are living on Harvard Ave. in Providence, RI. In the 1930 Federal Census, they are living on Stambaugh Ave. in Sharon, Mercer Co., PA.

Charles's WW I draft registration card is dated 12 Sep 1918; his address is given as 34 Cassius, New Haven, CT; wife Doris E. Andrews; age 32, occupation assembler at Trego Motor Co.

In the 1920 census, Charles and Doris are living in New Haven. George is 5 months old. Byron and Ethel Hale are living with them -- identified as brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Ethel, born in England, must be sister of Doris.

In 1930 and 1940 they are still in New Haven.

John is not in the Bristol births, but is listed in the 1910 census along with Hattie who had also died. Perhaps John was their name for a baby that was prematurely born.

In the 1920 Federal Census, Frank is age 24 and living at Brooklyn, New York, working at the Kings Co. Hospital.

In the 1930 Federal Census, the family is living on Plain St. in Providence, RI. Frank, the father, is noted as "absent."

Frank left his family in Rhode Island and moved to southern California, where he became a bus driver for Greyhound Bus Co.

The birth record at Bristol says he is the first child of Frank & Mary Chafee. It may be that he was the first child who lived, since I believe there was an earlier child, perhaps a miscarriage or death in very early infancy.

Frank married Mae Agnes Johnston Abt 1920. Mae was born Abt 1893, Canada; died 1956; was buried , North Burial Ground, Bristol, RI. [Group Sheet]

I have very happy memories of my grandmother, which is one reason why I named my older daughter after her. We would often visit her on Heath Avenue in Warwick. Once I even got to spend the night with her. The next day we walked a couple of miles to the shopping center across from Aldrich Junior High. I wanted to buy some doll clothes, but she said, "I can make those for you, Dear." And she did -- beautiful ones, for our baby dolls and grown-up dolls. She did lovely embroidery, too, which she gave as gifts in the form of pillows, table and bed linens, and framed pictures. In later years, when she moved to Ashland, MA, we would usually ride up to see her on Sunday afternoons. After I learned to drive, one summer day I borrowed my dad's car and drove up there with my cousin Barbara, and we took her to the seashore for lunch. Another time I rolled her hair up for her. In the early 1970s, Rich and I would drop in on her, and get her talking about the old days. Once she got started, the stories followed one after another. She'd get out the photographs, laugh about this or that event, and often give her opinion in no uncertain terms. More than once she said she had married too young, on her 18th birthday. But I'm glad she did, because my dad was born a little over a year later, the first of six sons. What a life! I'm sure her marriage, and her whole life, had its ups and downs. At one point their farmhouse burned down, and the family had to move into a little shanty for a while. My grandparents certainly set an example of hard work and determination for generations to follow. While I never met my grandfather, I know he was proud of his children and grandchildren. My grandmother was very much a part of our family, and I only wish she had lived to be a part of the lives of my children, too.

I have copies of Laura's birth, marriage, and death certificates, plus a copy of the page from the 1900 Census at Bristol which shows her family when Laura was one year old. Also, her gravestone has been photographed.

The birth record at Bristol says she is the second child born to Frank & Mary Chafee.
