  1. 1.  David LAKE, Sr. was born Abt 1645, Dorchester, MA; died Aft 1709, Tiverton, RI.

    Notes:

The following notes are from John O. Austin's "Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island."

David [Lake] was a freeman at Portsmouth 27 Feb 1669 [I found the date of 16 Oct 1668], and his earmark (for his livestock) was recorded 29 Mar 1669. On 22 Sep 1679 he bought land on the Taunton River (in Dighton, Somerset, and Freetown, MA) and also at Sippican (Rochester, MA) and Acushnet (New Bedford, MA). In 1689 he was a proprietor at Dartmouth, and a Selectman at Tiverton on 28 Jul 1694 and again in 1698. On 16 Mar 1696 and in 1698 he was Town Clerk of Tiverton. On 11 Mar 1702 he was Moderator of the Tiverton Town Meeting. On 15 Jun 1709 he, then of Little Compton, deeded to Zaccheus Butts his land rights in Dorchester and Stoughton, MA, which had been inherited from his uncle Thomas (probably Lake).

"Thomas LAKE [Henry & Alice's son] ... was brought up in the family of his uncle, Thomas LAKE of Dorchester. ... He was a soldier under Capt. Benjamin CHURCH in Philip's War, as was his brother David. ... On 1 Nov 1676, Plymouth Colony granted 100 acres at Puncatest (Tiverton) to David and Thomas LAKE for their services in Philip's War, of which David was to have 60 acres (Plymouth Col. Rec.). This land was afterwards included in the bounds of the Pocasset purchase, with the result that a bitter dispute arose between the Lakes and the Pocasset proprietors." (source: MORIARTY, G. Andrews: The Early Rhode Island LAKEs, published July 1935 in The American Genealogist and New Haven Genealogical Magazine, Vol. XII, No. 1, pp. 17-24.)

    Notes:

In the Remington Family book, Martha A. Benns gives her name as Innocent Taylor. From the records, it appears that this marriage to Benjamin Taylor was a first marriage for our Innocent, and that these are not two different Innocent Taylors. In any case, David Lake named his daughter as Innocent Remington in his will, so that has been documented.

Her year of birth is given as 1722 on the Brayton plaque at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Tiverton, RI.

One genealogy has her age at death as 91, which places her birth year at c1718.

Innocent married Benjamin Taylor 14 Aug 1742, Portsmouth, RI. Benjamin (son of Jonathan Taylor) died Abt 1743. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 4

  1. 26.  Abigail Remington Descendancy chart to this point (19.Innocent3, 3.David2, 1.David1) was born 31 Mar 1745, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI.

    Notes:

She probably was the one who married Simon or Seth Simmons at Portsmouth on 11 March 1767, by William Anthony, Justice. But Abigail is a common name, so more research is needed on this. However, it is noteworthy that both Simon Simmons and Joseph Remington are in the 1790 census at Hartland, VT; also, Joseph named a son Simon Simeon Remington.

Abigail married Simon Simmons 11 Mar 1767, Portsmouth, RI. Simon (son of Ichabod Simmons and Experience Peirce) was born Abt 1740. [Group Sheet]

  2. 27.  David Remington, Sr. Descendancy chart to this point (19.Innocent3, 3.David2, 1.David1) was born 13 Jun 1747, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI; died Abt 24 Oct 1834, Greenwich, Washington Co., NY; was buried , Greenwich, Washington Co., NY.

    Notes:

I believe that David was probably born in Portsmouth, RI, because that is where the family lived during his early childhood. They may have moved to Tiverton in 1750, but later moved back to Portsmouth -- at least, they had to obtain permission from Portsmouth Town Council to move to Richmond in 1757.

The 1774 Census of Rhode Island lists David Remington living in Richmond. This census was taken in May. David's household consists of five indiduals: 1 white male above 16, 3 white males under 16, and 1 white female above 16. These sons would have been Benjamin, Gardner, & David; Sarah had not yet been born.

The RI 1777 Military Census lists a David Remington age 16-50 A (able) in Richmond, but notes "res. Tivertown." This would make sense that it is this David, because he was brought up in Tiverton.

David enlisted five times from April 1776 to Sept 1780, for a total of about two and a half years, with RI companies. Battles he engaged in were: White Plains, Trenton, and Sullivan's Expedition at RI.

A David Remington is listed as a Sergeant in the list "Pay abstract of Capt. Dyer's Company for the month of September 1776."

At some point -- possibly after the war -- David & Mary and family settled at Greenwich, NY. He is listed as a resident of Easton in 1789.

In 1804 David Remington was overseer of the roads in District 12 of Greenwich, NY (see p 339 History of Washington Co., NY at Google Books). This could be David Sr. or David Jr.

On 1 Aug 1832, David Remington, aged 85, a resident of Greenwich, NY, appeared in the county court to testify concerning a military pension. His Revolutionary War Pension file is #S11288. At the time he said he was residing in Greenwich. He testified that he had been a private in Col. Varnum's Company in RI. He enlisted in April 1776 into Capt. Ethan Clark's Company, Col. Varnum's Regiment, and with them marched from Washington County, RI, where he lived, to Harlem Plains, NY, on NY Island. He said he was engaged in the Battle of White Plains, marched to Delaware, and to Bristol, PA, then to Fenton, NJ, to take the Hessians . . . was in the Battle of Fenton, then to Princeton and thence to Morristown, then accross the Delaware River to Bristol, PA, where he was discharged 18 Jan 1777. During the summer of 1777 he was on duty as a volunteer guarding the mainland of RI. In Aug 1778 he was a volunteer in the RI Expedition under Col. Charles Dyer for about four weeks. In July 1779 he enlisted in a regiment called Barton's Corpse, for one year, under Capt. Stephen Babcock, and was discharged in July 1780. He enlisted again about 1 Sep 1780 for six months under Lieut. Johnson and served until about 1 March 1781 and was discharged. Soon after the war he removed from RI to this town.

His annual pension allowance was $69.75. David was listed on the US Pension Roll of 1835 for Washington County, NY.

David married Mary Sheldon 15 Nov 1767, Cumberland, RI. Mary (daughter of Samuel Sheldon and Susannah Sherman) was born 9 Jul 1744, South Kingstown, Washington Co., RI; died 2 Sep 1807, Greenwich, Washington Co., NY; was buried , Greenwich, Washington Co., NY. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 39. Benjamin Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 11 Apr 1768, RI; died 15 Dec 1846, Greenwich, Washington County, NY; was buried , Greenwich, Washington County, NY.
    2. 40. Gardner Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 6 Mar 1770, RI; died 19 Jul 1862, Easton, Washington Co., NY; was buried , Greenwich Cemetery, Washington Co., NY.
    3. 41. David Remington, Jr.  Descendancy chart to this point was born 24 Jun 1772, RI; died 15 Dec 1860, Greenwich, Washington County, NY.
    4. 42. Sarah "Sally" Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 11 Aug 1774, RI; died 7 May 1849, Greenwich, Washington County, NY.
    5. 43. Innocent Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 27 Jan 1777.

David married Huldah Unknown Aft 1807. Huldah was born Abt 1742; died 20 Aug 1836, Greenwich, Washington County, NY; was buried , Greenwich, Washington County, NY. [Group Sheet]

  3. 28.  Phebe Remington Descendancy chart to this point (19.Innocent3, 3.David2, 1.David1) was born 4 Sep 1749, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI.

    Notes:

She may be the one who married Godfrey Brown at Newport on 12 April 1770. But since Phebe is a common name, it may have been another individual of the same name. The marriage record says Phebe was of Portsmouth. (see notes for her father)

Godfrey & Phebe Brown witnessed a Richmond, RI, land deed on 29 May 1773, between Gideon & Anne Worden of Portsmouth, RI, and David Allen of RI. Allen is a common family name in southern RI.

Gideon was Godfrey's brother, or half-brother.

Phebe married Godfrey Brown 12 Apr 1770, Newport, RI. (son of Rebeckah Unknown) [Group Sheet]

  4. 29.  Sarah Remington Descendancy chart to this point (19.Innocent3, 3.David2, 1.David1) was born 18 Jun 1752, Portsmouth or Tiverton, Newport Co., RI.

    Notes:

She may be the Sarah Remington in the Cemetery Database, c.1752 - 26 May 1792, buried in Newport #3, the Common Burial Ground on Farewell St. However, since Sarah is such a common name, this needs more research.

  5. 30.  Benjamin Remington Descendancy chart to this point (19.Innocent3, 3.David2, 1.David1) was born 12 Nov 1755, Portsmouth or Tiverton, Newport Co., RI.

    Notes:

He may have served in the military with his brother Joseph, and later married Betsey and settled in Vermont. A Benjamin Remington settled in Sheldon, VT, and had a son Jesse b.1806, who married Patience Griffin. Jesse in turn had a son Hosea who married Lucretia Rice. Another son, Warren, was reportedly born in 1834. That Benjamin needs more research to confirm which family group he belongs in.

  6. 31.  Joseph Remington, Jr. Descendancy chart to this point (19.Innocent3, 3.David2, 1.David1) was born Between 13 Jun and 13 Sep 1757, South Kingstown, Washington County, RI; died 1834, Hartland, Windsor County, VT.

    Notes:

On 20 June 1757, Joseph's father was given a certificate from Portsmouth, RI, to live in Richmond, RI. It is my assumption that around that time the family moved from either Portsmouth or from Tiverton to the South County area -- perhaps Richmond, South Kingstown, or Hopkinton -- so that is where Joseph Jr was born. In the early 1760s the family moved back to Tiverton.

A Joseph Remington is in the 1790 Federal Census at Hartland, Windsor Co., VT. There is one free white male over 16 yrs. old, which would be Joseph himself. Also in the household are two free white males under 16, which would be Joseph, Jr. and Simon; and three white females -- presumably Joseph's wife Caty and daughter Asenath; who is the third female?

In the same town in 1790 is listed Simon Simmons, possibly Joseph's brother-in-law.

    Federal Census of 1810, Hartland, Windsor, VT: Joseph Remington, 1 FWM 10 - 15, 1 FWM 45+, 2 FWF <10, 1 FWF 26-44; total 5.

From "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files, abstracted by Virgil D. White, Volume III: N-Z," The National Historical Publishing Company, Waynesboro, Tennessee (1992), page 2849:

REMINGTON, Joseph, MA Line, S21943, sol was b 13 Jun 1757 at Hopkinton RI & he lived at Petersham MA at enl & after the Rev he lived at Hartland in Windsor Co., VT where he applied 23 Jan 1833.

From "Soldiers, Sailors and Patriots of the Revolutionary War Vermont," by Carleton E. Fisher and Sue G. Fisher compilers, Second Edition, Pickton Press, Rockport, Maine (1992), page 431:

    REMINGTON, Joseph, MA; b Hopkinton, RI 1757; r Petersham, MA; Capt Woodbury's co 1777; r Hartland 1833; 1(S21943).

Hartland deed from "Stephen Hall of Petersham in the County of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts Bay" to "Joseph Remington late of Petersham" dated March 29, 1781. (from Volume 1 of Hartland's Land Records, page 30)

From "Hartland in the Rev. War," by Dennis Flower, page l3: "Joseph Remington had gone to the village to get his first pension money and after getting in sight of his house dropped dead in the road."

Joseph Remington is listed with Pensioners Under The Act of June 7, 1832; Windsor County, Vermont.

(above research notes from Richard Husband, a descendant)

Excerpt from Richard Husband's email: "The older Joseph Remington here of Wallingford was a totally different Joseph Remington than the one who married Caty Wright. After Caty died, Joseph married Sarah Kimpton (widow of Isaiah Streeter), and it seems pretty clear he always lived in Hartland from about 1781, when he bought land there, until his death. There are two sets of children and wives going on between the two, anyway, according to town records, that confirm they were different people. Some people confuse the Joseph Remington of Wallingford who married "Loranna" with our Joseph of Hartland, and mix the two Joseph's children up."

Joseph married Catherine "Caty" Wright 10 Apr 1782, Hartland, Windsor County, VT. Catherine was born Abt 1760; died 21 Dec 1798, Hartland, Windsor County, VT. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Thomas Remington of Tiverton was appointed to serve on the grand jury, along with Isaac Negus, for the November term 1797, to attend the Court of Common Pleas. (Tiverton Probate Records No 5 p 56)

Thomas served in the military during the Revolutionary War. He first enlisted at Tiverton in January 1777, and when he was discharged in March 1778, re-enlisted right away, and was subsequently discharged about a year later. During much of that time his company was encamped at Bristol and at Ft. Barton in Tiverton. He was in the action during the Battle of RI under General Sullivan.

In his deposition as part of the pension application in 1832, he said he had been born in South Kingstown, but that his family had moved to Tiverton when he was very young. After the war he returned to Tiverton, where he is most likely the other adult male in his father's household in 1790, which includes 2 free white males 16+, and one free white female -- probably his mother or a sister.

In 1832 he mentions that he is a neighbor of Job and Charles Durfee, Esquires. Thomas Remington is in the 1830 RI Census, residing in Tiverton (Newport County, p. 071). He is also there in 1840, and is listed as a Revolutionary War Pensioner, at age 79 1/2. However, he seems to be living alone at that time. Perhaps Alice is in ill health, and has gone to live with one of her children? She will pass away in 1848 at Dartmouth; their son Joseph and family are probably there in 1840, but appear in New Bedford by 1850. I have not yet found a date of death for Thomas, but apparently he died before Alice because she is described as his widow; also, since his last pension payment was in March 1842, he probably died in Feb or March of that year. "Thomas Remington residing in Tiverton collected a pension until March 2, 1842." (source for quote: George Sermuksnis, Archives Technician at Waltham National Archives).

On 7 September 1832, two friends/neighbors and fellow-Revolutionary-soldiers testified on his behalf; they were William Cook, and John Manchester, our ancestor.

Thomas Remington is on the list of persons who united with the Amicable Congregational Society, associated with the Amicable Congregational Church, Tiverton, RI. (ref: "The History of Amicable Congregational Church 1746 - 1946" p.83) He probably was buried from this church, but there were no death records kept for the church at this time. The location of his grave is unknown. I suspect he may be buried with his parents and their Brayton relatives, in one of the unknown gravesites in the family plot at Pleasant View Cemetery, Stone Church Rd., Tiverton, RI (formerly buried on a family farm and relocated to this cemetery).

Revolutionary War Pension file # S21938

He is listed on the Pension Roll of 1835: Remington, Thomas, private of Artillery, Newport county, all $90, rec $270, R.I. Cont. Line, pl July 9, 1833, com March 4, 1831, age 74

In the 1840 Federal Census, Thomas is listed in Tiverton, RI, as a Revolutionary War Veteran/Pensioner age 79 and 1/2.

The list of Thomas and Alice's children came to me from a distant cousin in Michigan. This agreed with names I already had found in the New Bedford whaling crew lists and in marriage, census, and death records in RI and MA.

On 2 March 1791 Thomas Remington mariner of Tiverton received 250 in Spanish milled dollars from Thomas Barker of Tiverton, for the 13th 50-acre lot in the Pocasset Purchase, bounded easterly and westerly on highway, north by the 12th lot and south by the 14th lot. Witnessed by Joseph Barker and Abraham Barker. (Tiverton Deed Book 4)

See this note from cousin Russ Shaw (I am not sure if it pertains to this particular Thomas Remington, our ancestor, but it probably does):
"Last time I was at the RIHS archives I came across an interesting document that I think you may want to check on. It involves Thomas Remington and his son John. I found them both as crew members on the brig Eliza out of Bristol, bound for Trinidad de Cuba, 5 Jan 1818. Reference: MS 28,sg 2, Box 7 (1819-1820), Bristol Custom House records, RIHS."
