  1. 1.  Jonathan REMINGTON was born 9 Sep 1758, Warwick, RI; died 31 May 1808, Lansingburgh, Rensselaer County, NY.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher, and to other sources as noted herein.)

Jonathan served during the American Revolution from 1777 to 1779 as a Sergeant in Captain Thomas Carlisle's and Captain Garzia's companies, and in Colonel Robert Elliott's artillery regiment. The Revolutionary War Pension file for Jonathan Remington can be viewed at the National Archives and Records Administration (microfilm #W7559). His widow, Sarah (Rhodes) (Potter) (Remington) Greene, was age 86 in 1850 when application for the pension was made. Because Jonathan had died many years previously, in 1808, she told what she knew about Jonathan's Revolutionary War service. A statement was also made by Sarah's brother, William Nehemiah Rhodes, in which he said that Jonathan had served in the artillery with his brother John Remington.

These statements were attested to by Seth Burke, who was "well acquainted with John and Jonathan formerly of Warwick. They were brothers, and neighbors to me." Reportedly, John was a Lieutenant and Jonathan a Sergeant. Jonathan's military service was also attested to by Mary Aborn of Pawtuxet, age 82 at the time of the pension hearing in 1850. Born around 1767/68, she would have been approximately age 9 in 1776. She stated that John and Jonathan (probably stationed at Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI) "were in the habit of visiting at the house of my grandmother where I used to often see them, and they used to talk to me. I was a child of 9 or 10. My grandmother and husband was their uncle." (She was probably Mary/Marcy/Mercy Rhodes, d/o Malachi Rhodes & Waite Fenner. This makes sense, because her grandmother would have been Mercy Fenner, who married Stephen Remington as her second husband.)

Sometime before 1780 Jonathan relocated to Berkshire County, MA. Town histories give evidence that he also served in the military there.

See "History of the Town of Cheshire, Berkshire County, Mass.," by Raynor & Petitclerc, Clark W. Bryan & Co, 1885:

Jonathan Remington is in the 1790 census at Adams, MA: 2 free white males 16+, 1 free white male <16, and 7 free white females. I suspect his brother John and family may have been living with them, and they aren't listed separately in this census.
Since the 1790 Census at Hancock, MA, lists another Jonathan Remington (possibly s/o Jonathan & Lorana), it may be that some of the above military records for Berkshire County, MA, could refer to him. However, the names listed for Col. Simond's regiment are names known to be of the community established by Rhode Islanders at Cheshire. It is also known that Jonathan and his brother John came to the Adams/Cheshire area and established families. John stayed in this area, but Jonathan relocated to Lansingburgh/Troy, NY around 1796, after his first wife died.

He was known in Adams and Cheshire as Colonel Jonathan Remington, and is referred to as such in the town records. He is also named as Jonathan Remington, Esq. Jonathan was owner of a tavern and store located on the southwest corner of the crossroads at the summit of the hill in Cheshire; this also may have included a hotel. At various times he served as the Town Moderator (chosen 1 Apr 1793), Justice of the Peace, Representative to the General Court at Boston, and sealer of brick molds. He is listed as a charter member of the Franklin Lodge of Masons. The names of "Jonathan and Phebe Rementon" appear in the early membership records of the First Baptist Church in Cheshire.

On 7 Aug 1792, Jonathan Remington Esq. was appointed one of a committee of nine to meet at Col. Remington's on the first Monday of September. On 5 Nov 1792, Col. Remington was nominated to issue a warrant to call the town together.

In 1793, subscribers to incorporating Cheshire as a town included Jonathan Remington (18s pd) and John Remington (4s pd).

Jonathan is mentioned in the book "The Life and Times of Samuel Gorton," by Adelos Gorton, p. 191. It states his birth date and that he married (unknown wife); settled in Berkshire Cty., MA; served in the Rev. War; and frequently represented the district of Cheshire in the Legislature previous to 1793.

While in Lansingburgh, Col. Jonathan Remington was a subscriber to "The Gleaner" by Judith Sargent Murray.

Note from Lois Remington Smith dated 9/2004: "Land Records of Adams, MA" Bks #1 thru #10, deeds signed in:
    Jonathan and Phoebe Remington 1788
    Thomas and Sarah Remington 1789
    Jonathan and Phoebe Remington 1793
    Jonathan and Mercy Remington 1797
"I found these somewhere in the past years and made a brief note of them. It may have been in 'The Berkshire Quarterly.' Thought you might be interested if you don't already have them."

  1. 2.  Maplet REMINGTON Descendancy chart to this point (1.Jonathan1) was born 2 Mar 1782, RI or MA; died 20 Dec 1861, West Greenwich, RI; was buried , Pine Grove Cemetery, Washington St., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

The RI Cemetery Database gives the name of Charles's wife as Marcy Remington. Probably this was a transcription error. Maplet Battey's grave is in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Coventry, but the gravestone is missing. The West Greenwich death record says she died 20 Dec 1861 at 79 yrs., 9 mos., and 18 days. It identifies her birthplace as Warwick, but does not name her parents. However, the 1850 WG census gives her birthplace as Massachusetts.

In the 1860 Census at West Greenwich, Maplet was age 78, living with Charles and Ann Battey, her son and daughter-in-law.

Maplet married Charles TIBBETTS 1 Jun 1806, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. Charles (son of Waterman TIBBETTS and Mercy WATERMAN) was born 25 Jan 1766, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died 2 Oct 1812, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Brayton Cemetery, Apponaug, RI. [Group Sheet]

    3. 12. Charles James Battey  Descendancy chart to this point was born 27 Apr 1827, West Greenwich, RI; died 19 Mar 1899, Washington, RI; was buried , Pine Grove Cemetery, Washington, RI.

  2. 3.  Elizabeth "Betsey" Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Jonathan1) was born 24 Dec 1785, Berkshire Co., MA; died 7 Oct 1870, Apponaug, Warwick, RI; was buried , Warwick, RI Historical Cemetery 60, off Cowesett Rd. at Bald Hill.

    Notes:

I have made an assumption that Betsey, Maplet's sister, is the Elizabeth Remington b. c1783, "daughter of Jonathan," who married Thomas Remington b. c1780, son of Benjamin & Phebe (Manchester) Remington. They were first cousins.

In 1860 Elizabeth Remington, age 77, is living at Warwick, RI, next to Ferdinand & Abby Remington. In 1870 she is age 86 and still at Warwick (Apponaug Post Office); she is living with Levi & Elizabeth Baker. Apparently she died not long after this census was taken.

The death record says "daughter of Jonathan," b. c1783. The RI Cemetery Database says c1784. Maplet's sister was born in December 1785, so assuming that the date of death is correct, and that the date of birth is correct in the family Bible, Elizabeth would have died just short of 85 years old. (There was another Jonathan Remington born in Scituate in 1743, but I have not yet discovered data on any family he may have had, such as a daughter named Elizabeth/Betsey.)

Additional evidence is found in the will of Thomas's brother, Jonathan d. 1866, who mentions Betsey Remington, widow of Thomas Remington, deceased. This probably would have been Elizabeth, his sister-in-law; her husband had died in 1853. So Betsey was her nickname. Betsey is also the name written in the family Bible as one of Maplet's sisters.

Elizabeth's birthplace as MA came from the papers of Mary E. Rice late of East Greenwich, RI, now deceased. This agrees with the data in the 1860 & 1870 Federal Censuses, which both have Massachusetts as Elizabeth's birthplace, and thus are additional support for her being Maplet's sister.

Elizabeth married Thomas Remington 3 Jan 1803, Warwick, RI. Thomas (son of Benjamin Remington and Phebe Manchester) was born Abt 1781, Warwick, RI; died 14 Nov 1853; was buried , Warwick, RI Historical Cemetery 60, off Cowesett Rd. at Bald Hill. [Group Sheet]

  6. 7.  Edward Scott Rhodes Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Jonathan1) was born Apr 1799, RI; died Aft May 1860.

    Notes:

See will of Sally Greene of Cranston, widow, dated 14 Dec 1836, proved 4 Nov 1854, pg. 76. In it she mentions by name her son and two grandchildren. So this "Sally" must have been the Sarah who was married to Jonathan Remington.

In the Federal Census of 1850, Edward & Julia Remington, ages 52 & 38, are living at Providence, RI.

On 20 July 1822 his wife Phebe H. Remington petitioned the Town Council concerning her husband who was deranged, asking that his uncle William N. Rhodes be "appointed guardian over the property of her unfortunate husband."

Official probate documents show that as of 22 July 1822 Edward S. R. Remington residing in Cranston was delirious and incapable of managing his own affairs, so William N. Rhodes, Esq., of North Providence was appointed guardian of his proprrty and finances. However, on 14 Apr 1827, William N. Rhodes resigned his guardianship and said Edward may be restored to all rights and privileges of a freeman.

On 12 Nov 1857, Edward submitted a written statement to the Probate Court of Cranston, concerning a woman who had come to them with a complaint that Edward had not paid her board for the past three or four weeks. He explained that he thought he had been married to the aforesaid woman in a lawful manner, but to his disappointment, her mother-in-law from South Boston came to visit them in July; she informed Edward that the woman's lawful husband lived with her in South Boston "which astonished me very much you must suppose."

On 28 Nov 1857, his son Richard T. Remington reported to the Probate Court of Cranston that his father was in want of discretion and incapable of managing his affairs and thereby liable to bring himself and family to want. He prays that someone be appointed guardian of Edward's person and estate.

On 21 Dec 1857, Edward S. R. Remington, "now boarding in Providence," sent a note of remonstrance against a petition of the Cranston Town Council.

In April 1858, his son Richard T. Remington signed a statement that Edward S. R. Remington of Cranston "is an unsuitable person to manage his affairs with discretion," prays said court to appoint a guardian of the estate according to law.

Subsequently, on 15 May 1828, seven individuals signed a petition to the Town Council concerning Edward S. R. Remington, residing near Pawtuxet with his family; they said he was "incompetent to manage his domestic business, or any other lawful duty" and requested that a discreet person be appointed to take care of his person and property as soon as convenient. A similar note is signed by 13 of his "friends" (no date).

On 29 May 1858, three men of Cranston were appointed to take an inventory of Edward's estate, to be delivered to Daniel A. Smith, guardian of the estate of the ward. On 27 Aug 1858 his real estate was valued at $2200.

The court documents state that his property is the farm that was the homestead of his mother, Sally Greene, late of Cranston, deceased; bordered by land of Arthur and Anstice Greene, Brown & Ives, Salt River, and a road leading from Pawtuxet Village to the City of Providence. In May 1860 a document was signed allowing the sale of Edward's property to pay off his debts; this was signed by Richard, Sarah, & Edward.

He is likely the Edward Remington age 66 farmer born Cranston, living in Providence in the 1865 RI State Census.

Edward married Phebe Hunt Cole 17 Oct 1819, Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI. Phebe was born Abt 1800; died 29 Jan 1828; was buried , Rhodes-Greene Lot, Bluff Ave., Cranston, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

The family Bible has his birthdate as 27 Apr 1827.

I believe that Charles wrote a poem about his nephew on the occasion of the death of Rev. Battey. (See notes for Nicholas Battey b 1836)

His gravestone includes the following inscription: "In my Father's house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. John 14:2"

    Notes:

Benjamin took over the Remington farm on Cowesett Rd., which had been inherited from his father and forebears.

On 16 November 1832, at Warwick, RI, Benjamin F. Remington & Jonathan Remington, both yeomen of Warwick, signed a deed which acknowledged receipt of $600 from John B. Arnold, yeoman of Warwick, for "land with dwelling thereon situated in Warwick, in the village of Centerville." Also signing the deed were Mary Ann A. Remington, wife of Jonathan, and Sarah A. Remington, wife of Benjamin.

Martha A. Benns has transcribed records with Benjamin's date of death as 15 Jan 1877; however, the official death entry at Warwick Town Hall appears to say 15 Jan 1879, which is probably correct since he died at age 72.

The gravestone has his date of death as 5 Jan 1879. It has the quotation "Charity suffereth long and is kind."

Benjamin married Sarah A. Tillinghast 1831. Sarah (daughter of Samuel Tillinghast and Mary Unknown) was born 1 Mar 1809; died 16 Oct 1896; was buried , Remington-Arnold Lot, Cem. #60, Corner of Cowesett Rd. and Bald Hill Rd., Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher, and/or to other sources as noted herein.)

I am not positive that Jonathan belongs in this family group. However, the weight of evidence supports including him here.

On 16 November 1832, at Warwick, RI, Jonathan Remington & Benjamin F. Remington, both yeomen of Warwick, signed a deed which acknowledged receipt of $600 from John B. Arnold, yeoman of Warwick, for "land with dwelling thereon situated in Warwick, in the village of Centerville." Also signing the deed were Mary Ann A. Remington, wife of Jonathan, and Sarah A. Remington, wife of Benjamin. This document implies that Jonathan & Benjamin were close relatives.

The Remington family burial plot, near the corner of Cowesett Rd. & Quaker Lane, has four gravestones for children of Jonathan & Mary Ann A. Remington. These are located near the graves of Elizabeth (Earl) Remington and the other three wives of Benjamin Remington, who was the father of Thomas and grandfather of the above-mentioned Benjamin F. Remington. Jonathan certainly must have been in this extended family because four of his children are buried here on the Remington farm.

Jonathan is a name that appears repeatedly in this family line. For example, our ancestor Jonathan was one of the sons of Thomas & Abigail (Eldredge) Remington. The Benjamin mentioned above, who married four times, is his brother, who also named a son Jonathan. Two of Benjamin's other sons, James & Thomas, brothers to Jonathan, also had sons named Jonathan.

To complicate things a bit, Benjamin's son Thomas Remington married Betsey Remington, daughter of Jonathan Remington, who is in all likelihood the brother of Jonathan, making Thomas & Betsey first cousins. Betsey may have been raised by her Uncle Ben after her mother died.

Genealogist Martha Benns lists Jonathan Monroe Remington b. c1825 as a son of Thomas & Elizabeth. However, she includes no documentation, and I have found no birth record for this Jonathan. Rather, I believe their son Jonathan must be the one mentioned in the deed of 16 Nov 1832, who signed along with Benjamin, and their two wives. According to census records, he was born around 1809 or 1810.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Jonathan & Mary A. A. Remington are living at Smithfield, RI. They have three children: Albert, William, & Edwin A. By 1860 they are in Illinois, where they are in the census at Tiskilwa, Bureau Co., IL. Son Edwin is with them. In 1880 Mary is at Indiantown, Bureau Co., IL, apparently widowed. Edwin is with her.

In 1870 sons Albert and Edwin are in Iowa. Pat Rosenquist originally found Jonathan & Mary in that census for me: "1870 Indiantown Twp. I find them living with the first: Haskell, Delecta, 67 MA keeps house; John Remington 60 MA, does nothing; Mary Remington 67 NY keeps house."

Complicating this research of the various Jonathans is the following erroneous death entry at Warwick City Hall: "Jonathan Monroe Remington d. Oct 9, 1885 age 68 son of Thomas & Elizabeth"; however, the RI Death Index has this exact age and date of death for Jonathan M. Remington, son of James & Sally Remington. Which one is authoritative? I believe the Warwick records are incorrect in this case, and that that particular death record belongs to the son of James & Sally. My reason for this conclusion is that Jonathan M.'s age at death puts his birth year at c1817, which agrees with the birth date of Johnathan M. Remington, s/o James & Sally, as found in the family Bible of William R. Remington. Perhaps the city clerk was confused or misinformed about which of the Jonathans had died.

Two other possibilities that I can see are as follows: this Jonathan, b. c1810, may have been a son of Jonathan & Ardeliza (Rice), born before their marriage in 1811; or, he could have been an illegitimate son of Lydia Remington, daughter of Benjamin & Lydia (Manchester) Remington, before she married Olney Rice Arnold. These do not seem as reasonable as including him as the next younger brother to Benjamin F. (thereby discounting a birthdate of c1825, from Benns).

One more question remains: which one married Phebe A. Cleveland b. 3 Oct 1833? At first I thought it could have been either one. Martha Benns puts Phebe with Jonathan Monroe Remington (whom she has b1825 as a son of Thomas & Betsey). I know that Phebe and her husband Jonathan Remington had at least one child, born 28 April 1861 in West Greenwich. Named Charles E. Remington, he was their first child (see p. 11, book of "Births" for 1857-1905). The original entry identifies the mother as Phebe M. Cleavland, born in West Greenwich, and the father as Jonathan Remington, born in Warwick. The various census records show Phebe's husband as being born c1817, so I feel he must be the other one, s/o James & Sally, rather than the son of Thomas & Betsey.

Jonathan married Mary Ann "Abby" Hazard Bef 16 Nov 1832. Mary (daughter of Sylvester Gardiner Hazard and Elizabeth Greene) was born Between 1800 and 1809, RI; died 20 Aug 1892; was buried , Mt. Bloom Cemetery, Tiskilwa, Bureau Co., IL. [Group Sheet]

    Children:

  8. 15.  Lydia Elizabeth Remington Descendancy chart to this point (3.Elizabeth2, 1.Jonathan1) was born 8 Jan 1816, Warwick, RI; died 24 May 1888, Coventry, RI; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

I think this marriage for "Lydia Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth," belongs in this family group, as it is the only couple of this time period that seems to match with her. I am making that assumption pending further research.

Lydia is probably the daughter of Betsey, sister of our ancestor Maplet Remington.

The RI Cemetery Database has her year of death as 1884.

Lydia married Reuben Wightman, III 12 Apr 1835, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. Reuben (son of Reuben Wightman, Jr. and Anna Baker) was born 8 May 1812, Phenix, RI; died 18 Apr 1891, North Kingstown, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

At the RI Historical Society Library, Manuscript Room, there is a letter from G. Tillinghast to Mr. Thomas M. Remington. Dated May 10/55, New Berlin, it concerns a note his brother held against him -- in other words, money owed by Mr. Tillinghast. He states that he is unable to pay it at this time, but "if you will come up here I will give you such as I have" -- an old pair of boots, also an old hat, both "badly worn" -- but "such as I have I will give you." My response would be, "No, thanks!"

In the 1850 Federal Census, the family is living in Foster, RI, with three daughters, along with Cynthia's parents, Samuel & Hannah Tillinghast.

Thomas married Cynthia Tillinghast 1 Jan 1846, Warwick, RI. Cynthia (daughter of Samuel Tillinghast and Hannah Tillinghast) was born 2 Apr 1820, West Greenwich, RI; died 4 Oct 1888, Groton, CT; was buried , Tillinghast Lot, Rt. 102, Foster, RI. [Group Sheet]

  13. 20.  Sally Rhodes Remington Descendancy chart to this point (7.Edward2, 1.Jonathan1) was born Abt 1820.

    Notes:

Sally R. Johnson is in the 1850 US Census at Cranston, RI, at age 30, along with her husband Nicholas Johnson, 42, a mariner. Also in the home are Sally Greene, age 85; David Snow, age 30, a shoemaker; and Sarah M. Olden, age 10.

Apparently in the same household, although on the next census page, are Richard T. Remington, age 27, a jeweller; Sophia Remington, age 26; and their children Isabella 4, John R. 2, and Nicholas J. 1 month.

Could Sarah M. Olden possibly be a daughter by a first marriage?

Sally married Nicholas Johnson 9 Aug 1840, Providence, RI. Nicholas was born Abt 1808, Denmark; died 21 Jul 1857; was buried , Historical Cemetery 35, Cranston, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Richard was probably named after his great uncle, Richard Thornton, husband of Abby Rhodes.

In the 1850 US Census at Cranston, RI, Richard T. Remington is age 27, a jeweller; with him are Sophia Remington, age 26; and their children Isabella 4, John R. 2, and Nicholas J. 1 month.

Also in the household are Sally Greene, age 85; Nicholas Johnson, 42, a mariner, and his wife Sally R. Johnson, age 30; David Snow, age 30, a shoemaker; and Sarah M. Olden, age 10. (See notes for Sally's brother Richard T. Remington.)

    In 1860 the family is at Providence Ward 4: Richard T. Remington 37, Sophia 36, Isabella 14, John R. 13, Nicholas J. 10, Sarah J. 8, and Richard W. 2.

At Scituate Town Hall, in the book "1810-1882 Births, Deaths, & Marriages, Etc." there is an entry for the marriage between Mr. Richard T. Remington and Mrs. Lucinda M. Haynes, 12 Jan 1868, by W. H. Bowen, Clergyman." This is Richard's second marriage; he was about 45 at the time. Lucinda was probably a widow, and Haynes/Haines was her married name.

In 1870, Richard & Lucinda are living at Scituate, RI. They are ages 48 & 37. Sons John R., 22, & Nicholas J., 20, are with them. Also in the household are Anna, 16, & Celia L., 14, both surname Haines -- probably Lucinda's daughters.

Richard T. Remington was in the Civil War, a Private in the RI 1st Light Artillery.

Richard married Sophia Unknown Abt 1845. Sophia was born Abt 1824, MD or PA; died 29 Jan 1862, Providence, RI. [Group Sheet]

    4. 61. Sarah J. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 4 Aug 1852, Providence, RI.
    5. 62. Richard W. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1858, RI.

Richard married Lucinda M. Haynes 12 Jan 1868, Scituate, RI. Lucinda was born Abt 1833, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Marcy (Mercy) W. Church, age 29, is listed in the 1860 census as living with Jeremiah 54, Sally W. 52, and Charles C. 25. Where was Nelson?

Mercy married Nelson K. Church 26 Sep 1852, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI. Nelson (son of Kenyon Church) was born 16 Sep 1824; died 1 Feb 1901; was buried , Wood River Cemetery, Rt. 3, Richmond, RI. [Group Sheet]

  4. 25.  Charles Carmi WHITFORDCharles Carmi WHITFORD Descendancy chart to this point (9.Sally3, 2.Maplet2, 1.Jonathan1) was born 14 Dec 1834, West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI; died 18 Aug 1910, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

I have a photocopy of his original birth entry at the Town of West Greenwich. Charles Carmi was named for his two grandfathers, Carmi Whitford and Charles Tibbetts. I also have a photocopy of his death entry in the Book of Deaths for 1910, p. 30, in the Town of Coventry.
We have one picture of my Great-great-grandfather Whitford. This is posted at our family website [www.thesorensens.net]. Also there is a photograph of his gravestone at Maple Root Cemetery.

All of the children and their birth dates are listed in the book "Records of the Bailey Family," p. 61.

In the 1860 Federal Census at West Greenwich, Charles is 25 and living with his parents, along with his married sister, Marcy W. Church, 29. In the 1870 Federal Census, Charles C. 34 and his wife Harty 21 are still living at West Greenwich, RI. They have a child Hattie L., age 1. The family is in the household of Jeremiah & Sally W. Whitford, ages 64 & 61, Charles's parents. The 1880 Census at West Greenwich shows him married, age 45, with his wife and five daughters, again living in the household with Jeremiah and Sally Whitford, Charles's parents. This is probably the family farm on Rt. 3 in West Greenwich, where there is now a motel and gas station, at the intersection of Interstate 95. He is age 65 in the 1900 Census at Coventry, and is listed as the head of the household which includes his children as well as two grandsons, Angeretta's sons. I have photocopies of the pages from these three censuses.

    Example -- 1880 Census:
    Charles C. Whitford age 45
    Harty P. Whitford 30
    Hattie L. 11
    Angeretta W. 9
    Julia E. 6
    Lena M. 4
    Olive 2

Charles was elected to the Exeter Town Council in 1888 (was this a different Charles Whitford?).

There is a paragraph about Charles C. Whitford and his family on p. 1343 of J. R. Cole's "History of Washington and Kent Counties," published in 1889. Although the writer has made two mistakes (names Charles's grandfather as Jeremiah instead of Carmi, and names his wife as Hattie instead of Harty), he does offer other information that is more reliable. We are told that Charles was born in 1834 in West Greenwich, and that he has been a farmer all of his life, having bought the farm where he now lives in 1884 (probably the farm on Knotty Oak Rd. in Coventry). It says he was married to [Harty] in 1866, and lists his children as: Hattie L., Angeretta W., Julia E., Lena M., Olive L., Charles W., and Nelson J. Lastly, he comments that "the family is said to be of Welsh descent."

Of the individuals in this family, the ones I have personal memories of are Angeretta, who was my great-grandmother Remington; Olive, who was my great "Aunt Ollie"; Charles W., who we called "Uncle Will"; and J. Nelson, who was my great "Uncle Jerry."

My dad, Norman Remington, says he remembers driving by the site of the old family homestead, which was on Rt. 3 between Harkney Hill Road and the present Interstate 95. About where the Best Western/Congress Inn is today, there was a spring. Further up the road, where the plat Wood Estates is now located, there must have been a family burial site, because when the plat was being planned (perhaps in the 1960s?), certain Whitford heirs had to sign, acknowledging there were interments on the property, and giving their permission for the project to proceed.

Charles married Harty Potter JOHNSON 25 Nov 1866, Richmond, RI. Harty (daughter of Philip JOHNSON, Jr. and Tryphena Hoxsie GREENE) was born 12 Apr 1850, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; died 27 Nov 1917, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

Calling her brothers Jim & Ben, she often chided them for not writing to her more often, saying she was worried about them when she didn't hear from them. These personal and poignant letters, which include much about the Civil War era, can be viewed at the archives of the RI Historical Society Library.

    Notes:

James attended East Greenwich Academy, then Brown University, where he was valedictorian in 1862. His oration, which was on the "Scholar's Relations to Humanity," was delivered in the uniform of a captain of infantry beneath the traditional scholastic gown. In September 1862, he was mustered into the army as captain of Company H, 7th Regiment, RI Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA, on 13 December 1862, sustaining a hit from a musket ball which shattered his lower jaw. It was a compound fracture in which the bone was "badly shattered and imperfectly united." After a period of recuperation at a hospital in New Haven, CT, he was officially discharged due to disability on 2 May 1863. Having returned to Rhode Island in April 1863, he was elected to the RI House of Representatives from Warwick, but soon resigned this political position to return to military service with a group known as the Invalid Corps, renamed Veterans Reserve Corps. He accepted a captain's commission and served in several different units, including one which guarded rebel prisoners at Camp Chemung in Elmira, NY, from November 1864 to June 1865.

While stationed at Elmira, James studied law in his spare time, and was appointed to serve as Judge Advocate of a General Court Martial in Albany, NY, from May to December 1865. He was later assigned to serve from January 1866 to November 1868 as an officer in Virginia for the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands. In this agency his job was to help people transition from wartime to a peacetime economy, and to assist and protect newly freed African-Americans. The organization established schools and distributed food, clothing, and firewood to the needy. James also used his legal expertise to aid individuals in the courts.

During his convalescence at New Haven, CT, James had met a young woman named Ellen "Nellie" F. Howard, with whom he established a lasting friendship and carried on a correspondence. They were married in Brooklyn, NY, in 1868. Shortly after this he entered into law practice in Portsmouth, VA. In 1872 they moved to Brooklyn, where he practiced law in New York City for the remainder of his life. His business focused on tax, patent, and real estate law. James H. Remington was one of the earliest members of the NY State Bar Association, and president of the US Law Association from 1881 to 1899.

In the 1870 Federal Census, James H. Remington is age 31, b RI, a lawyer, living in a hotel at Portsmouth, VA. His wife's name is not listed, although she may very well have been living there with him.

In the 1880 Federal Census, James & Ellen are living in Brooklyn with their two children, as well as Ellen's mother and brother.

James H. Remington was Paymaster of the Kentish Guards c1860 (source: Acts and Resolves of the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Passed at the May Session, 1858).

The additional following information on James H. Remington is found in a biographical sketch in "The Seventh Regiment of RI Volunteers in the Civil War, 1862 - 1865," by William P. Hopkins; Providence, RI: Snow & Farmham Printers, 1903; Personal Sketches, pp. 352 - 354:

"Captain James Henry Remington, son of Benjamin F., was born at Warwick, R.I., Nov. 9, 1838, on the old homestead, which, up to 1892, at least, had been in the Remington family since it was purchased from the Narragansett Indians. The father was a member of the Rhode Island legislature . . .

"Dec. 30, 1865, General Hooker, by order of the secretary of war, appointed Captain Remington judge advocate of the court of inquiry convened at Rochester, N.Y., to investigate certain charges against Col. E. G. Marshall, a graduate of West Point, attached to the Fifth United States Infantry, who had previously distinguished himself as the commander of the Thirteenth New York Volunteers. The case was hotly contested for several weeks, but resulted in the exoneration of the colonel. In this famous trial he clearly exhibited the ability, learning, and tact that afterward distinguished him at the bar. Subsequently he served at Winchester, Wytheville, and Norfolk, Va., as military commissioner, assisting in the reconstruction of the state and gaining the respect of all parties for his firmness and impartiality. He resigned in September, 1868, having been commissioned major by brevet for gallantry and good conduct to date, from March 13, 1865, and henceforth devoted his attention exclusively to the law.

"Dec. 8, 1868, Mr. Remington was admitted to the bar at Norfolk, and immediately commenced practice in the courts of Virginia. Pending reconstruction he was appointed by General Canby, who commanded the first military district of Virginia, attorney for Norfolk, Princess Anne, Nansemond, South Hampton, and Isle of Wight counties. So satisfactorily did he discharge his duties that when the state had become reconstructed, he was at once elected by the people attorney for Norfolk County and the City of Portsmouth. When the organization of the Grand Army of the Republic commenced he became one of its leaders, and it was largely through his personal influence that the Department of Virginia was established. In December, 1870, he was appointed its commander by Gen. John A. Logan, then commander-in-chief of the order, but previously had been chosen commander of the Farragut Post at Portsmouth . . .

"Mr. Remington was a member of the Plymouth Church, Brooklyn, and for many years a warm friend and admirer of Henry Ward Beecher . . . He was also a supporter of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences."
