    Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Thomas & Elizabeth are living at Warwick, Kent, RI. With them are sons Albert G. & John H. C.

The death entry at Warwick City Hall says he died on 15 Nov 1853.

The graves of Thomas & Elizabeth are in the Remington-Arnold Lot, behind the Stop & Shop at Cowesett Corners. This whole area was part of the original Remington farm, but now is mostly residential and commercial. There is a section of woods behind the shopping center, and that is the location of the family cemetery.

    Notes:

"Jonathan & Ardelis Remington" witnessed the will of Dinah Baker on 9 Aug 1813 at Cranston.

The family farm was on Natick Rd. above Oaklawn. The story is told that he bought the land from the Indians with a peck measure of Spanish milled dollars. Many years later, someone tilling the land found such a coin, probably dropped by the Indians as they left. If true, this would seem to substantiate the story.

The death entry at Warwick City Hall says Jonathan died a widower on 19 Apr 1866 at age 82, of old age. The RI Death Index identifies him as son of Benjamin & Phebe Remington.

The will of Jonathan Remington of Warwick, yeoman, was dated 22 Oct 1860 and proved 14 May 1866. It mentions two sons, Ferdinand and Thomas; one daughter, Sally R; grandson William H.; and Betsey Remington widow of Thomas Remington dec'd. (Warwick book pp 231 - 233)

According to the RI Cemetery Database, the cemetery is located "at 649 Natick Rd. across the wall from CR080."

Jonathan married Ardeliza "Eliza" Rice 19 May 1811, Warwick, RI. Ardeliza (daughter of Thomas Rice and Sarah "Sally" Arnold) was born 21 Mar 1792, Warwick, RI; died 3 May 1844; was buried , Jonathan Remington Lot, CR098, Natick Rd., Cranston, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

In the 1850 Federal Census, Benjamin & Hannah are living at Warwick, Kent, RI, with children Andrew, Benjamin, Susan, Melissa, Albert, George, Charles, & Sarah.

In the 1860 Federal Census, the family is still in Warwick, and consists of: Benjamin 51, Hannah 53, Andrew J. 30, Charles 15, Sarah A. 12, Ellen 25, & Edgar 3. Also in the household is daughter "Melissa D. Payne" and her husband and children. They are living near Benjamin's uncle Jonathan Remington, b. c. 1785, and his daughter Sally b. c. 1814.

    In 1870, the family -- still at Warwick -- includes: Benjamin, 61; Hannah, 63; & George, 38; next door is Albert F., 30, a peddlar; and Sarah M., 24.

In 1880, Benjamin is still at Warwick. 5. 9.  James DeWolf Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.James2, 1.Phebe1) was born 30 Jan 1811; died 6 Oct 1865; was buried , East Greenwich Cemetery, Beachwood Dr., East Greenwich, RI.

    Notes:

James and his wife Mary were baptized 5 April 1846 at the Baptist Church of East Greenwich, RI. The Reverend C. C. Wheeler was the pastor there from Nov. 1845 to Nov. 1847.

In the 1850 Federal Census, James D. is written as Isaac D. Remington. Perhaps the census taker misread his own handwriting. The family is living at East Greenwich, RI, along with Mary Mowry, 72, probably Mary Remington's mother.

In 1860 the family is still at East Greenwich: James D., 49; Mary E., 51; Malissa, 25; Alonzo, 22; & Louisa, 22. Louisa is probably Alonzo's wife.

James married Mary E. Mowry 13 Oct 1833, Fall River, MA. Mary (daughter of Mary Unknown) was born Abt 1810; died 9 Jan 1885; was buried , East Greenwich Cemetery, Beachwood Dr., East Greenwich, RI. [Group Sheet]

  6. 10.  Thomas J. Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.James2, 1.Phebe1) was born 30 Sep 1812, RI; died 31 Aug 1866; was buried , Old Baptist Cemetery, Crompton, RI.

    Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1850, Thomas & Mercy Remington, ages 37 & 38, both b RI, are living at Southbridge, MA. They have two daughters: Caroline (middle initial I, T, or P?) 15, and Sarah A. 9. Apparently Caroline was a twin to Cornelia, but Cornelia died young. Carrie died in 1855. In 1850, Thomas's brother Henry and family also are living at Southbridge.

In the Federal Census of 1860, Thomas J. Remington is a day laborer living with the family of Henry Fiske at Sturbridge, Worcester Co., MA. It is not clear whether his wife and children have all died, but they are not with him. Perhaps his death record would show whether he was a widower or not. However, I am not sure where he died.

Thomas married Mercy Unknown Abt 1834. Mercy was born Abt 1812, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1850. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 43. Caroline "Carrie" P. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1835; died 22 Sep 1855; was buried , Old Baptist Cemetery, Crompton, RI.
    2. 44. Cornelia D. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1835; died 19 Nov 1837; was buried , Old Baptist Cemetery, Crompton, RI.
    3. 45. Sarah A. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1841, RI.

  7. 11.  Henry Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.James2, 1.Phebe1) was born 30 Sep 1814, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died 25 Mar 1876, New Britain, Hartford Co., CT; was buried , Historical Cemetery 7, Old Baptist Cemetery, West Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher, and to other sources as noted herein.)

It appears that this little family had four children who died young. Sarah, Henry's wife, then died shortly after giving birth to twins. How sad!

Information on their gravestone inscriptions was found in the "RI Genealogical Register" Vol. 17 p. 199.

Henry's gravestone includes the following inscription: "Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him." (photograph from Jane Waterhouse)

In the Federal Census of 1850, Henry & Sarah A. Remmington, ages 35 & 33, are living at Southbridge, Worcester Co., MA. Two children are in the household: Phebe E. 10, and Napoleon B. 5. Henry's brother, Thomas, and his family also are living at Southbridge.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Henry has remarried and is living at Hartford, Litchfield Co., CT. His wife is Saloma, age 24. Children with them are: Esther 20, Napoleon 15, Sarah 8, Emma 4, & Helen 2. Also in the household are Henry & Julia Strickland and their two children, Ida & Adelaide.

In 1870 Henry is in New Britain, Hartford Co., CT. His wife's name appears as Selina, and they have three daughters with them: Emeline A. 15, Hellen C. 12, & Celia B. 9.

He may be the Henry Remington who, on 28 April 1861, as a member of Maple Root Baptist Church, was ordained to the Gospel Ministry and afterwards became assistant pastor. However, since Henry was living in CT at the time of the censuses, this needs more research.

Henry married Sarah Ann Clark Slocum 1834. Sarah (daughter of Eleazer Slocum and Sarah Crandal) was born 30 Aug 1815, Exeter, RI; died 27 Dec 1851; was buried , Historical Cemetery 7, Old Baptist Cemetery, West Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 46. Sarah Ann Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 10 Nov 1834; died 18 Feb 1842; was buried , Old Baptist Cemetery, Crompton, RI.
    2. 47. Mary Jane Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Aug 1837; died 11 Nov 1837; was buried , Old Baptist Cemetery, Crompton, RI.
    3. 48. Phebe Esther Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1840, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1860.

    5. 50. Napoleon Bonaparte Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt Dec 1844, RI; died Aft 15 Apr 1910.
    6. 51. Samuel Slocum Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 20 Dec 1851; died 22 Apr 1852; was buried , Old Baptist Cemetery, Crompton, RI.
    7. 52. Sarah Slocum Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 20 Dec 1851, Southbridge, MA; died 14 Jan 1905, New Britain, Hartford Co., CT.

Henry married Selina Unknown Between 1852 and 1855. Selina was born Abt 1836, NY; died Aft 1 Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 53. Emeline A. "Emma" Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Between 1855 and 1856, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1880.
    2. 54. Helen C. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1858, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1870.
    3. 55. Celia B. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1861, CT; died Aft 1 Jun 1870.

  8. 12.  Johnathan Monroe Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.James2, 1.Phebe1) was born 4 Mar 1817; died 9 Oct 1885, RI; was buried , Old Baptist Cemetery, Crompton, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher, and to other sources as noted herein.)

In the 1850 Federal Census he is living with his mother and three brothers, as well as a sister-in-law and her sister.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Jonathan M. & Phebe A. Remington, ages 41 & 23, are living in Cowesett near Benjamin F. & Sarah Remington. This places his year of birth c1819. Benjamin F. is Jonathan's first cousin.

In the 1880 Federal Census "Johnathan" & Phebe are still at Warwick, ages 63 & 46. Again, this confirms the birth year of 1817. Living with them are son Charles E. 19 and his wife Abby A. 19.

The City of Warwick vital records have this entry: "Jonathan Monroe Remington d. Oct 9, 1885 age 68 son of Thomas & Elizabeth"; however, the RI Death Index has his name and exact age and date of death for Jonathan M. Remington, son of James & Sally Remington. Which one is authoritative? I believe the Warwick records are incorrect in this case, and that that particular death record belongs to the son of James & Sally. Perhaps the city clerk was confused about which of the Jonathans had died.

The age at death puts the birth year at c1817, which agrees with the birth date of Johnathan M. Remington, s/o James & Sally, as found in the family Bible of William R. Remington.

This Jonathan Remington is buried in West Warwick Historical Cemetery #007, the Old Baptist Cemetery in Crompton. The RI Cemetery Database notes that he was h/o Phebe A. Cleveland. There is a Phebe Remington in that cemetery, but her dates are 1806-1845; she is Jonathan's sister. There is a Phebe A. Remington in Cranston Historical Cemetery # 002, but her dates are 1841-1912. If these dates are correct, neither is Phebe (Cleveland) Remington. This needs more research. Possibly Phebe is buried in the family plot but has no stone. (see notes for Phebe A. Cleveland)

His gravestone spells his name Johnathan.

In William R. Remington's family Bible, he is listed as Johnathan M. Remington. The handwriting is probably that of his brother William or their mother Sarah.

On 15 April 1840, a Jonathan Remington was listed as a Freeman of Exeter. Since Exeter is next to West Greenwich, this may -- or may not -- be the same person. (see RI Genealogical Register, V. 2, No. 1, p. 45)

Perhaps Jonathan was born in Warwick; then possibly moved to Exeter, where he became a freeman at about age 23; and sometime later married Phebe of West Greenwich, after which they moved to Warwick and lived near his relatives. Perhaps Phebe went to stay with her mother to have their son, born in 1861 at West Greenwich.

There is a death record at Warwick, 25 March 1868, for a Mary Remington, daughter of Jonathan & Abby, born Warwick c1843. Perhaps Abby & Mary belong to this Jonathan M. Remington (needs more research). Could Abby have a prior wife?

Or, possibly he was Jonathan R. Remington "of Warwick" who married Martha C. Babcock "of Coventry," at Coventry 10 Oct 1841, as a prior marriage. However, the middle initial is incorrect.

There is a third Jonathan Remington in the extended family in this generation, born c. 1809 - 1810. I have not positively determined who his parents are, although I am fairly sure he is the son of Thomas & Betsey, also in this extended family.

Johnathan married Phebe A. Cleveland Between 1850 and 1860. Phebe was born 3 Oct 1833, West Greenwich, RI; died Aft 1 Jan 1920. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 56. Charles E. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 28 Apr 1861, West Greenwich, RI; died 24 Jul 1937, Cranston, RI; was buried , Coventry Historical Cemetery 109, Manchester Cemetery, Washington St., Coventry, RI.

  9. 13.  Franklin Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.James2, 1.Phebe1) was born 5 Apr 1819; died 5 Dec 1888, East Greenwich, RI; was buried , East Greenwich Cemetery, EG38, First Ave., East Greenwich, RI.

    Notes:

Franklin and Maria Remington were both baptized on 12 July 1874 at the Baptist Church of East Greenwich, RI. I am making an assumption that they were husband and wife. They also died approximately a year apart.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Franklyn Remington is age 51, living at East Greenwich, RI. With him is Mariah, 39, and Sarah P., 13.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Franklin & Maria are living in Warwick, RI, with Sarah P. & Lydia A., ages 23 and 1. From the Warwick birth records, it appears that the infant was the illegitimate child of Sarah, their daughter. Lydia's father was William W. Allen, born in East Greenwich.

    Notes:

    His two wives were sisters.

On his birthday in 1847, Miss Dorcas Bates presented Charles with a special gift -- a Bible. She wrote this message inside: "Presented to Mr. Charles E. Remington as A Birth day's Present Dec. 6th AD 1847 by Miss Dorcas Bates." She later became his wife.

After the death of Charles's second wife, Mary, c1923-24, the Bible was passed on to Jessie Belle (Spencer) Moulton, b. 1904, her niece (or grand-niece).

In the Federal Census of 1850, Charles & Dorcas, ages 23 & 20, are living in the household with his wodowed mother Sarah Remington, 75. Also in the household are: Mary Bates 10 (sister of Drocas), Franklin Remington 24, William H. Remington 22, Jonathan M. Remington 25.

In the Federal Census of 1860, he is age 39, married to Mary E. age 21, and living at Johnston. He is a carpenter.

In the Federal Census of 1870 they are still at Johnston, living with the Sterry Sweet family.

In the Federal Census of 1880, Charles and Mary, ages 53 and 40, are living at Providence. Charles is still a carpenter.

    Notes:

William R. Remington's family Bible has Sarah's date of death as March 3rd, 1826.

  12. 16.  William Rice (2) Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.James2, 1.Phebe1) was born 6 Nov 1827, RI; died 17 Feb 1901.

    Notes:

In the 1880 Federal Census, this family is living on Broad St., District 50, in Providence, RI.

William's family Bible is in the possession of one of his descendants, and copies of some of the family pages were given to me by Joyce (Remington) Gallup. On one page is written: "The Property of William R. Remington presented to him by his Mother Sarah Remington as a New Years gift Jan 1851." He would have been 23 years old.

He may have been the William R. Remington who was a Justice of the Peace at Warwick. (source: Acts and Resolves of the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Passed at the May Session, 1858)

William married Emily M. Whipple Abt 1849. Emily (daughter of Alfred Whipple and Delia Unknown) was born 19 Jun 1831, RI; died 21 Mar 1899; was buried , Old Baptist Cemetery, Crompton, RI. [Group Sheet]

  13. 17.  Benjamin F. Remington Descendancy chart to this point (3.Thomas2, 1.Phebe1) was born 29 Sep 1806, Warwick, RI; died 15 Jan 1879, Warwick, RI; was buried , Remington-Arnold Lot, Cem. #60, Corner of Cowesett Rd. and Bald Hill Rd., Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

Benjamin took over the Remington farm on Cowesett Rd., which had been inherited from his father and forebears.

On 16 November 1832, at Warwick, RI, Benjamin F. Remington & Jonathan Remington, both yeomen of Warwick, signed a deed which acknowledged receipt of $600 from John B. Arnold, yeoman of Warwick, for "land with dwelling thereon situated in Warwick, in the village of Centerville." Also signing the deed were Mary Ann A. Remington, wife of Jonathan, and Sarah A. Remington, wife of Benjamin.

Martha A. Benns has transcribed records with Benjamin's date of death as 15 Jan 1877; however, the official death entry at Warwick Town Hall appears to say 15 Jan 1879, which is probably correct since he died at age 72.

The gravestone has his date of death as 5 Jan 1879. It has the quotation "Charity suffereth long and is kind."

Benjamin married Sarah A. Tillinghast 1831. Sarah (daughter of Samuel Tillinghast and Mary Unknown) was born 1 Mar 1809; died 16 Oct 1896; was buried , Remington-Arnold Lot, Cem. #60, Corner of Cowesett Rd. and Bald Hill Rd., Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

  14. 18.  Jonathan Remington Descendancy chart to this point (3.Thomas2, 1.Phebe1) was born Between 1809 and 1810, RI; died 1878; was buried , Mt. Bloom Cemetery, Tiskilwa, Bureau Co., IL.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher, and/or to other sources as noted herein.)

I am not positive that Jonathan belongs in this family group. However, the weight of evidence supports including him here.

On 16 November 1832, at Warwick, RI, Jonathan Remington & Benjamin F. Remington, both yeomen of Warwick, signed a deed which acknowledged receipt of $600 from John B. Arnold, yeoman of Warwick, for "land with dwelling thereon situated in Warwick, in the village of Centerville." Also signing the deed were Mary Ann A. Remington, wife of Jonathan, and Sarah A. Remington, wife of Benjamin. This document implies that Jonathan & Benjamin were close relatives.

The Remington family burial plot, near the corner of Cowesett Rd. & Quaker Lane, has four gravestones for children of Jonathan & Mary Ann A. Remington. These are located near the graves of Elizabeth (Earl) Remington and the other three wives of Benjamin Remington, who was the father of Thomas and grandfather of the above-mentioned Benjamin F. Remington. Jonathan certainly must have been in this extended family because four of his children are buried here on the Remington farm.

Jonathan is a name that appears repeatedly in this family line. For example, our ancestor Jonathan was one of the sons of Thomas & Abigail (Eldredge) Remington. The Benjamin mentioned above, who married four times, is his brother, who also named a son Jonathan. Two of Benjamin's other sons, James & Thomas, brothers to Jonathan, also had sons named Jonathan.

To complicate things a bit, Benjamin's son Thomas Remington married Betsey Remington, daughter of Jonathan Remington, who is in all likelihood the brother of Jonathan, making Thomas & Betsey first cousins. Betsey may have been raised by her Uncle Ben after her mother died.

Genealogist Martha Benns lists Jonathan Monroe Remington b. c1825 as a son of Thomas & Elizabeth. However, she includes no documentation, and I have found no birth record for this Jonathan. Rather, I believe their son Jonathan must be the one mentioned in the deed of 16 Nov 1832, who signed along with Benjamin, and their two wives. According to census records, he was born around 1809 or 1810.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Jonathan & Mary A. A. Remington are living at Smithfield, RI. They have three children: Albert, William, & Edwin A. By 1860 they are in Illinois, where they are in the census at Tiskilwa, Bureau Co., IL. Son Edwin is with them. In 1880 Mary is at Indiantown, Bureau Co., IL, apparently widowed. Edwin is with her.

In 1870 sons Albert and Edwin are in Iowa. Pat Rosenquist originally found Jonathan & Mary in that census for me: "1870 Indiantown Twp. I find them living with the first: Haskell, Delecta, 67 MA keeps house; John Remington 60 MA, does nothing; Mary Remington 67 NY keeps house."

Complicating this research of the various Jonathans is the following erroneous death entry at Warwick City Hall: "Jonathan Monroe Remington d. Oct 9, 1885 age 68 son of Thomas & Elizabeth"; however, the RI Death Index has this exact age and date of death for Jonathan M. Remington, son of James & Sally Remington. Which one is authoritative? I believe the Warwick records are incorrect in this case, and that that particular death record belongs to the son of James & Sally. My reason for this conclusion is that Jonathan M.'s age at death puts his birth year at c1817, which agrees with the birth date of Johnathan M. Remington, s/o James & Sally, as found in the family Bible of William R. Remington. Perhaps the city clerk was confused or misinformed about which of the Jonathans had died.

Two other possibilities that I can see are as follows: this Jonathan, b. c1810, may have been a son of Jonathan & Ardeliza (Rice), born before their marriage in 1811; or, he could have been an illegitimate son of Lydia Remington, daughter of Benjamin & Lydia (Manchester) Remington, before she married Olney Rice Arnold. These do not seem as reasonable as including him as the next younger brother to Benjamin F. (thereby discounting a birthdate of c1825, from Benns).

One more question remains: which one married Phebe A. Cleveland b. 3 Oct 1833? At first I thought it could have been either one. Martha Benns puts Phebe with Jonathan Monroe Remington (whom she has b1825 as a son of Thomas & Betsey). I know that Phebe and her husband Jonathan Remington had at least one child, born 28 April 1861 in West Greenwich. Named Charles E. Remington, he was their first child (see p. 11, book of "Births" for 1857-1905). The original entry identifies the mother as Phebe M. Cleavland, born in West Greenwich, and the father as Jonathan Remington, born in Warwick. The various census records show Phebe's husband as being born c1817, so I feel he must be the other one, s/o James & Sally, rather than the son of Thomas & Betsey.

Jonathan married Mary Ann "Abby" Hazard Bef 16 Nov 1832. Mary (daughter of Sylvester Gardiner Hazard and Elizabeth Greene) was born Between 1800 and 1809, RI; died 20 Aug 1892; was buried , Mt. Bloom Cemetery, Tiskilwa, Bureau Co., IL. [Group Sheet]

    Children:

    7. 73. Edwin A. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Oct 1848, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1900.

  15. 19.  Lydia Elizabeth Remington Descendancy chart to this point (3.Thomas2, 1.Phebe1) was born 8 Jan 1816, Warwick, RI; died 24 May 1888, Coventry, RI; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

I think this marriage for "Lydia Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth," belongs in this family group, as it is the only couple of this time period that seems to match with her. I am making that assumption pending further research.

Lydia is probably the daughter of Betsey, sister of our ancestor Maplet Remington.

The RI Cemetery Database has her year of death as 1884.

Lydia married Reuben Wightman, III 12 Apr 1835, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. Reuben (son of Reuben Wightman, Jr. and Anna Baker) was born 8 May 1812, Phenix, RI; died 18 Apr 1891, North Kingstown, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

At the RI Historical Society Library, Manuscript Room, there is a letter from G. Tillinghast to Mr. Thomas M. Remington. Dated May 10/55, New Berlin, it concerns a note his brother held against him -- in other words, money owed by Mr. Tillinghast. He states that he is unable to pay it at this time, but "if you will come up here I will give you such as I have" -- an old pair of boots, also an old hat, both "badly worn" -- but "such as I have I will give you." My response would be, "No, thanks!"

In the 1850 Federal Census, the family is living in Foster, RI, with three daughters, along with Cynthia's parents, Samuel & Hannah Tillinghast.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Albert F. & Sarah M. Remington are living in Warwick, RI, next door to Albert's parents.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Albert appears to be still living at Warwick next door to his father Benjamin and his sister Melissa (Remington) Paine and her family. Albert's age is given as 40, and his wife Sarah A.'s as 32. However, this would be an incorrect middle initial for her, and her age is off two years. For the present, I am assuming it is the same wife.

It is possible that Albert married two women named Sarah in the 1860's, and that his wife in 1870 was not Sarah M. (Collins) Remington. The RI Marriage Index lists a marriage for Albert F. Remington to Sarah I. Spencer on 28 Aug 1865. This could be his second marriage. However, since there seem to be several Albert Remingtons in Rhode Island at this time, it may be a different Albert.

Albert married Sarah M. Collins 15 Jun 1861, Providence, RI. Sarah was born Between 1846 and 1848, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1880. [Group Sheet]

  6. 38.  George M. Remington Descendancy chart to this point (8.Benjamin3, 2.James2, 1.Phebe1) was born 11 Sep 1841; died 9 Jun 1873, "lost at sea"; was buried , Old Baptist Cemetery, Church St., West Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

    He died at sea.

His gravestone has this poem (I guessed at two or three words that are hard to read):
While kindred hearts shall gather [around]
    This memorial stone to weep
For far away neath the briny deep
    He's sleeping death's dreamless sleep.

Yes his body rests neath ocean's [waves]
Which have o'er [mastered] man's control
But we joy to think there's a power beyond
And the Father keepeth his soul.

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit (If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher, and to other sources as noted herein.)

In 1860, Louisa Remington, age 22, is living with the family at East Greenwich. Probably Louisa is actually Emily Louise, also known as Emma -- three names for one wife.

Alonzo G. Remington was a member of the Six-Principal Baptist Church of East Greenwich on 3 June 1858. This is probably the same individual. However, the 1870 Federal Census at Hillsdale, MI, shows an Alonzo Remington, age 31, with wife Emma, 30, and daughter Louisa, 8 -- all born in RI. Could this be this family? Probably. Living with them are three other individuals born in RI: Chauncey Knapp, John Hopkins, & William Bragg. The men are in carpentry and brickmaking.

Yes, it is very likely the same family. They are back in East Greenwich, RI, in the 1880 census, except that daughter Louisa is now son Louis, age 18, who is bookkeeping in a cotton mill. Alonzo is a house carpenter and Emily is a dress maker.

In January 1859, the RI General Assembly voted to incorporate The Third General Six Principle Baptist Church of East Greenwich. Specific names listed in this act were: Gilbert Tillinghast, Timothy Andrews, Joseph Tarbox, Alonzo E. Remington, John C. Carr, Rowland Barton, and Horace Tillinghast. (source: Acts and Resolves of the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Passed at the May Session, 1858; Google Books)

Alonzo married Emily Louise Tillinghast 27 Nov 1858, East Greenwich, RI. Emily (daughter of Horace Tillinghast and Sarah "Sally" Tibbetts) was born 7 Jun 1837, Warwick, RI; died 25 Dec 1929, Providence, RI; was buried , East Greenwich Cemetery, Beachwood Dr., East Greenwich, RI. [Group Sheet]

In the Federal Census of 1870, Napoleon B. Remington is age 25 and living at New Britain, Hartford Co., CT. He is married to Alice and has a daughter Madge, 6 months old.

In 1880 Napoleon is age 35 and boarding at New Britain, Hartford Co., CT. His occupation -- rule maker. He appears to be single, although the census does not specify. They are living with Almira's parents, the Walkers. Although the names and ages are slightly different, Napoleon's occupation is similar -- works in rule and tool (civil?) shop. He could be the same person; daughter Cora M. could be Madge.

    Notes:

In the 1930 Federal Census, Chas E. & Abbie A. Remington, both 68, are living on Jefferson St., Warwick, RI.

In the same census there is another listing for a Charles E. Remington, age 68, widowed, living in District 16, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. He is next to Seth Remington, who would be the first cousin once removed of Abbie's husband. I am wondering if he is listed twice or if there is another Charles of the same age.

    Charles died at age 76.

Notes from Donald Dewey, 15 Nov 2009:
"Colonel George Sanford Burton was a surgeon in the Third Rhode Island Heavy Artillery during the Civil War. He lived in East Greenwich, Rhode Island in a family house at the corner of Post Road and Bay View Avenue. His only surviving daughter Georgie Burton Hazard was born in 1884, the year he died. She had no children. The Colonel's widow Sarah P. Remington Burton remarried a George Paine. Georgie Burton adored her father and detested Paine and resented her mother from then after.

"Georgie Sanford Burton went to East Greenwich Academy in East Greenwich and married the brother of my grandmother Bowdoin Frothingham Hazard of Shrewsbury, NJ. Georgie B. Hazard divorced Bowdoin in 1912 and went on to found a highly regarded school at 59 East Front Street in Red Bank, NJ, which was called Burton Hall. She operated the school until she had a stroke in 1963. She died at our house in Virginia in 1965 and is buried with her father in Warwick, R.I.

"Several of my mother's siblings and both my older sister and brother went to her school. I heard all the stories about Colonel Burton and have his saber and other items such as his marriage certificate that "Aunt Georgie" kept of her father's. She closed the school in the summer and lived up until her stroke in her father's house. Burton Hall had no grade levels - you graduated when she said you graduated - most of her pupils were accepted to Ivy League colleges and universities. The older pupils taught the younger pupils. Everyone learned Greek and Latin.

"Colonel Burton was married twice. A Daniel Hazard who lives in California is the descendent of Burton's first marriage."

Abby wrote many letters to her parents and brothers during the late 1850s and 1860s. Her letters were full of love for her family, dedication to her job, and passion for patriotism. Calling her brothers Jim & Ben, she often chided them for not writing to her more often, saying she was worried about them when she didn't hear from them. These personal and poignant letters, which include much about the Civil War era, can be viewed at the archives of the RI Historical Society Library.

    Notes:

Benjamin F. Remington was a Lieutenant in the Civil War, RI 1st Light Artillery, Tompkins Battery. He was originally stationed at Providence, RI, for three months' service, April 1861. His battery was sent to battle, but didn't participate in a full-scale battle, as the confederates vacated camp when the Union troops approached. Remington was in command of the battery on the return trip home. They were disappointed that they didn't have the chance to use their skills.

    Cause of death: consumption.

Benjamin married Emily Rhodes Padelford 14 Apr 1864, Providence, RI. Emily (daughter of Seth Padelford and Louisa Rhodes) was born 23 Jun 1837, Providence, RI; died 11 Oct 1904, Providence, RI; was buried , Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

James attended East Greenwich Academy, then Brown University, where he was valedictorian in 1862. His oration, which was on the "Scholar's Relations to Humanity," was delivered in the uniform of a captain of infantry beneath the traditional scholastic gown. In September 1862, he was mustered into the army as captain of Company H, 7th Regiment, RI Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA, on 13 December 1862, sustaining a hit from a musket ball which shattered his lower jaw. It was a compound fracture in which the bone was "badly shattered and imperfectly united." After a period of recuperation at a hospital in New Haven, CT, he was officially discharged due to disability on 2 May 1863. Having returned to Rhode Island in April 1863, he was elected to the RI House of Representatives from Warwick, but soon resigned this political position to return to military service with a group known as the Invalid Corps, renamed Veterans Reserve Corps. He accepted a captain's commission and served in several different units, including one which guarded rebel prisoners at Camp Chemung in Elmira, NY, from November 1864 to June 1865.

While stationed at Elmira, James studied law in his spare time, and was appointed to serve as Judge Advocate of a General Court Martial in Albany, NY, from May to December 1865. He was later assigned to serve from January 1866 to November 1868 as an officer in Virginia for the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands. In this agency his job was to help people transition from wartime to a peacetime economy, and to assist and protect newly freed African-Americans. The organization established schools and distributed food, clothing, and firewood to the needy. James also used his legal expertise to aid individuals in the courts.

During his convalescence at New Haven, CT, James had met a young woman named Ellen "Nellie" F. Howard, with whom he established a lasting friendship and carried on a correspondence. They were married in Brooklyn, NY, in 1868. Shortly after this he entered into law practice in Portsmouth, VA. In 1872 they moved to Brooklyn, where he practiced law in New York City for the remainder of his life. His business focused on tax, patent, and real estate law. James H. Remington was one of the earliest members of the NY State Bar Association, and president of the US Law Association from 1881 to 1899.

In the 1870 Federal Census, James H. Remington is age 31, b RI, a lawyer, living in a hotel at Portsmouth, VA. His wife's name is not listed, although she may very well have been living there with him.

In the 1880 Federal Census, James & Ellen are living in Brooklyn with their two children, as well as Ellen's mother and brother.

James H. Remington was Paymaster of the Kentish Guards c1860 (source: Acts and Resolves of the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Passed at the May Session, 1858).

The additional following information on James H. Remington is found in a biographical sketch in "The Seventh Regiment of RI Volunteers in the Civil War, 1862 - 1865," by William P. Hopkins; Providence, RI: Snow & Farmham Printers, 1903; Personal Sketches, pp. 352 - 354:

"Captain James Henry Remington, son of Benjamin F., was born at Warwick, R.I., Nov. 9, 1838, on the old homestead, which, up to 1892, at least, had been in the Remington family since it was purchased from the Narragansett Indians. The father was a member of the Rhode Island legislature . . .

"Dec. 30, 1865, General Hooker, by order of the secretary of war, appointed Captain Remington judge advocate of the court of inquiry convened at Rochester, N.Y., to investigate certain charges against Col. E. G. Marshall, a graduate of West Point, attached to the Fifth United States Infantry, who had previously distinguished himself as the commander of the Thirteenth New York Volunteers. The case was hotly contested for several weeks, but resulted in the exoneration of the colonel. In this famous trial he clearly exhibited the ability, learning, and tact that afterward distinguished him at the bar. Subsequently he served at Winchester, Wytheville, and Norfolk, Va., as military commissioner, assisting in the reconstruction of the state and gaining the respect of all parties for his firmness and impartiality. He resigned in September, 1868, having been commissioned major by brevet for gallantry and good conduct to date, from March 13, 1865, and henceforth devoted his attention exclusively to the law.

"Dec. 8, 1868, Mr. Remington was admitted to the bar at Norfolk, and immediately commenced practice in the courts of Virginia. Pending reconstruction he was appointed by General Canby, who commanded the first military district of Virginia, attorney for Norfolk, Princess Anne, Nansemond, South Hampton, and Isle of Wight counties. So satisfactorily did he discharge his duties that when the state had become reconstructed, he was at once elected by the people attorney for Norfolk County and the City of Portsmouth. When the organization of the Grand Army of the Republic commenced he became one of its leaders, and it was largely through his personal influence that the Department of Virginia was established. In December, 1870, he was appointed its commander by Gen. John A. Logan, then commander-in-chief of the order, but previously had been chosen commander of the Farragut Post at Portsmouth . . .
