Cherry sent me the image of the original document which records Thomas's agreement to manage Stephen's estate; Stephen is described as a laborer of Warwick and non compos mentis. The document is also signed by Stephen Remington and Daniel Remington, presumably two uncles of Thomas and Stephen.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher, and to other sources as noted herein.)

A Remington family Bible record says that this Thomas Remington was one of triplets, the other two of whom died young. This Bible belonged to Mrs. Mary E. Remington, wife of James D. Remington, great-grandson of Thomas. However, Fuller's "History of Warwick" says that his son Thomas was one of triplets.

He is undoubtedly the Thomas Remington who in March 1744 agreed to take over management of the estate of his brother Stephen Remington, laborer of Warwick, who was "non compos mentis." The original document is witnessed and co-signed by Stephen and Daniel Remington, probably Thomas Jr. and Stephen's uncles.

Thomas was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, along with some of his sons. Oliver Payson Fuller, in his book "The History of Warwick, RI," says four of the Remington brothers (sons of Thomas III, likely the four oldest) were in the American army during the war of the Revolution. According to the manuscript "Revolutionary War -- Burial Place & Service of RI Patriots," found at the Knight Library in Providence (now at Providence Central Public Library), Thomas was a Private in the Pawtuxet Rangers in 1778. It says he was buried in the family lot on the Remington Farm, north side of Cowesett Road near Quaker Lane (Route 2).

This historical cemetery is located behind the Stop & Shop plaza at the intersection of Cowesett Rd. and Bald Hill Rd./Quaker Lane/Rt. 2. Thomas's gravestones (headstone and footstone) have been photographed.

In the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 17, pp. 204 & 205, there is a list of graves at or near this location. It refers to "the Remington farm now owned by George Dawley," and mentions an Arnold family burial plot northwest of his house, and another cemetery "on the Remington farm north of the house." This is where Thomas & Abigail are buried. This lot has about 15 marked burials, Remingtons and Arnolds, plus some unmarked graves.

According to early records described in "Family Notes" (formerly at Knight Library, now at Providence Central Public Library), this family's "Remington Farm" extended from Cowesett Rd. (at Quaker Lane) northward to the next road (probably the location of present-day Rt. 117) for a mile, then eastward a 1/2 mile, so that it was rectangular in shape. This was on the east side of Quaker Lane. According to Oliver Payson Fuller's "The History of Warwick, RI," it was Cowesett farm #2 on the old plat map laid out in the 1600s; it was originally owned by John Smith, and later by the heirs of Lieut. Eliza Collins, and subsequently by Samuel Barnes of Swansea, from whom it was purchased by Thomas Remington II (who died in 1723 at age 41).

Also on Cowesett Rd. but west of Quaker Lane (Rt. 2) was the "Col. Waterman Place," where our ancestors Capt. John & Mercy Waterman are buried (near the corner of Kulas & Cedar streets). This was on the south side of Cowesett Rd., roughly across from where Evelyn's Villa and the Cowesett Inn are today. Across from the Waterman place was the Arnold farm (the area where Pep Boys and the Ricci home are now located), purchased from Robert Potter's heirs by Israel Arnold of Pawtuxet in 1707.

An entry in Elder John Gorton's pastoral journal notes that he preached 23 Sept 1764 on I Peter 4:18 at Thomas Remington's [house]. Editor Cherry Fletcher Bamberg writes, "Although Thomas and Abigail Remington, who lived at Cowesett, were not official members of the church, they hosted occasional meetings and had a substantial running account with Elder Gorton in the mid-1760s. Purchases included needles of silk, thread, flour, 'Bisket,' snuff, wooden plates, and sundries" (p. 56). Gorton was a tailor by trade, but also a merchant who sold various foods, household items, and sundries.

In his will, dated 11 June 1798 proved 9 May 1808, Thomas Remington of Warwick, yeoman, gave to his [second] wife Sarah the household furniture, all she brought with her "at the time of our marriage," and all she has acquired since, a cow, heifer, etc. His son Thomas received lands in Coventry, with buildings thereon, he to pay legacies to his brothers John & Jonathan and to sisters Maplet Rice, Sarah Holden, & Mary Rice. Sons John and Jonathan were each given $10, as they already had their share [perhaps when they moved to Berkshire County, MA]. Each of his three surviving daughters was given $100 and the household furniture after the death of their [step] mother. Henry was given $240 and land; Benjamin received his father's mansion house and clock and all remaining of the homestead farm and rest of all his possessions, he to be executor.

According to Fuller's book "History of Warwick," Thomas was one of triplets, the other two of whom died. Another source says that it was his father Thomas who was one of triplets. In addition, a transcript of a Remington family Bible says it was his father.

He was a Revolutionary War soldier. According to the manuscript "Revolutionary War -- Burial Place & Service of RI Patriots," located at the Knight Library in Providence, Thomas served as a fifer in Capt. Hawkins' Co., Col. Varnum's Regiment. It also says he died 6 August 1817 at age 70, and was buried in the family lot at the Remington Farm, west side of East Rd., Coventry.

Death notice in the Providence Journal of 11 August 1817: "Judge Thomas Remington, at Coventry, RI, in 70th year." Martha A. Benns gives his date of death as 11 Aug 1817, but this is the date his death notice was in the newspaper.

Some genealogies have this Thomas marrying Mary Wood, also. Thomas Remington, Jr., and Mary Wood were married 7 June 1778 at Warwick, RI. However, if the Revolutionary War Pension files are accurate, these are two different Thomases, since the dates of death are quite different. The other one, who married Mary Wood, died 19 January 1831.

Thomas married Mary Rice 20 Dec 1772, Warwick, RI. Mary (daughter of Holden Rice and Elizabeth Warner) was born Abt 1752; died Aft 18 Mar 1779. [Group Sheet]

Maplet is mentioned as Maplet Rice in her father's will.

The gravestone inscription in the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 17, p. 199, says Mrs. Hannah, widow of Mr. William Rice. Did Maplet die earlier, and was Hannah a second wife? According to the Rhode Island Cemetery Database, Maplet (Remington) Rice, buried in WW004 with her husband, was born c.1749 and died 3 Dec 1841. Perhaps she was also called Hannah (?). William's will mentions his wife Maplet.

A Remington family Bible record of a later generation says that Maplet married Benjamin Rice of Warwick. This Bible was or is in the Rare Book Room of the General Library of the University of Michigan.

Maplet Rice became a member of the Maple Root Baptist Church in Coventry, RI, on 3 May 1788. They also noted that she died 7 Dec 1841. Perhaps that was the date of burial.

Her will, dated 24 Aug 1840, mentions daughter Sarah Remington, as well as grandchildren James D. Remington, Phebe Remington, Roby Munroe, & Abby Ann King.

Maplet is a family name passed down from the Gorton ancestry. The maiden name of Samuell Gorton's wife was Mary Maplett.

Maplet married William Rice 29 Jan 1769, Warwick, RI. William (son of Thomas Rice and Ann Low) was born 11 Feb 1744/45; died Aug 1825; was buried , Old Baptist Cemetery, Crompton, RI. [Group Sheet]

Benjamin Remington, a resident of Warwick all his life, was part owner of the Crompton Mill in Coventry, RI. He married three of the Manchester sisters, all of whom died young of consumption (tuberculosis).

During the Revolutionary War era, in the fall of 1775 Benjamin was drafted into the Militia at Warwick, serving for three months as a private in Captain Rice's Company. In the winter/spring of 1776, he enlisted for one month as a volunteer in Captain Reuben Wightman's Company, serving for 33 days at Warwick Neck and possibly elsewhere during that time. Colonel Waterman, "whom he well knew," commanded the regiment. Afterwards, during the same year, Benjamin was again drafted into the Militia and at that time served 15 days under the same Captain and Colonel at Warwick Neck. Later, in September, he again served under Captain Wightman at Prudence Island for 35 days. During this time they had to take all the stock off the island to "prevent their falling into the hands of the enemy." In November and December he again served under Captain Rice for 15 days at Old Warwick (present-day Oakland Beach and Conimicut) "during the time the enemy took possession of Newport"; at the end of this term he was re-drafted and served 15 more days. In the summer of 1777 Ben was drafted again and served for 35 days at Tiverton under Captain Rice and General Spencer. They were supposed to "cross over to the island of Rhode Island, but didn't have enough boats." In the summer of 1778 he was re-drafted and served at Rhode Island (Acquidneck Island) in General Spencer's (or Sullivan's) Expedition for 24 days, under Captain Rice and Colonel Thomas Holden, "whom he well knew." Then in July 1779 he was again called out with the Militia to Bristol, where he served 15 days. His pension records state that he served as a sergeant for 10 months and five days. Benjamin Remington personally appeared in Court at East Greenwich on 21 Aug 1832, at the age of 79, to testify concerning his Revolutionary War service. His statement was attested to by John Wightman of Coventry, who served with him, and also Anthony Arnold. (Pension File # S21937)

Benjamin's will, dated Jan 1846 and proved 14 Aug 1837, mentions daughters Lydia Arnold (w/o Olney Rice Arnold) and Sarah Gorton Holden (w/o Bennett Holden), and sons James E. Remington, Jonathan Remington, Thomas Remington. His son Thomas was given the homestead farm given to Benjamin by his honored father, Thomas Remington, late of Warwick, Dec'd. All of Benjamin's children received land in the will. It also mentions grandsons Franklin s/o James E., Thomas s/o Thomas, and William s/o Jonathan.

In "The History of Warwick, RI" by Oliver Payson Fuller, he is referred to as Benjamin F. Remington. However, I have not seen his name with a middle initial elsewhere. According to Fuller, Benjamin lived at the family estate on Cowesett Rd., at the time the Crompton Mills were established. It was about a mile away from the mills. He was a member of the Town Council and of the Legislature. He left 140 acres to his sons Jonathan & Thomas.

He was probably one of the four RI presidential electors referred to in the following: "Vote cast for John Adams, of Massachusetts, for President; for Charles Pinckeny, of South Carolina 3 votes, and John Jay, of New York, 1 vote, for Vice President; all Federalists; Fifth Presidential Election, 1804; votes cast by Constant Taber, of Newport; James Aldrich, of Scituate; James Helme, of South Kingstown; Benjamin Remington, of Warwick."

Benjamin married Phebe Manchester 18 Apr 1779, Warwick, RI. Phebe (daughter of Matthew Manchester and Freelove Gorton) was born 8 Nov 1756; died 11 Feb 1786, Warwick, RI; was buried 13 Feb 1786, Remington-Arnold Lot, corner of Cowesett & Bald Hill Rds., Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

The names of seven of the children of John and Molly are written in the Diary of Captain Samuel Tillinghast, Molly's father: Daniel, Polly, John, Henry, Varnum, Hannah, and Franklin. The only ones missing from the list are Marsha, who is mentioned in John's pension records, and Abigail, one of the three surviving children as of 1851. ("The Diary of Capt. Samuel Tillinghast 1757-1766," transcribed and edited by Cherry Fletcher Bamberg, Rhode Island Genealogical Society, 2000, p. xli.)

DAR records suggest that he had a second wife named Mary Greene. I haven't yet found any evidence of this (needs more research to confirm). See notes for John's wife Mary Tillinghast.

John Remington was at Cheshire, Berkshire Co., MA, in the Federal Censuses of 1800 and 1810.

    John Remmington was at Adams, Berkshire County, MA, in the 1820 (2 males, 2 females) and 1830 (1 male 70-80, 1 female 60-70) Federal Censuses. (1830: p. 29 of 32 at ancestry.com)

It appears from John's pension records that he was back in Warwick, RI in 1818. However, he may have gone back to his hometown for a period of time to take care of family matters, such as the estate of his mother-in-law (see Warwick Land Evidence).

According to "The Tillinghasts in America" by Wayne G. Tillinghast, Rhode Island Genealogical Society, 2006, p. 528, John probably moved there in 1787, as quoted from a letter from Captain Samuel Tillinghast to his daughter Freelove Greene: "Mr. Remington Sat off afoot for hoosuck, and purposes To Move his Famely in the Fall." Wayne G. Tillinghast notes that Adams, MA, was originally known as East Hoosuck Plantation.

He is likely the "Capt. John Remington who formerly lived near the corner of Eagle and Center streets in North Adams, who with his wife were buried in the old Colgrove Cemetery." (source: "Berkshire Genealogist" Vol. 26 No. 4 Fall 2005, p. 128; reprinted from "The Berkshire Hills" of 1900/01)

John, "of North Adams, MA," was a Lieutenant in Colonel Angell's RI Company in 1776, during the Revolutionary War. He also served in Captain Lewis's Company, under Colonel James M. Varnum in the RI Line. He first appeared in the Kent County Court of Common Pleas to appeal for a pension on 2 June 1818, as "a resident of Warwick, RI" (perhaps referring to it as his former home?). However, he later transferred from the RI Line to MA for purposes of his pension. He appeared in Court at Lenox, Berkshire County, MA, on 28 June 1820 at age 63 years and 8 months, at which time he was a resident of Adams, MA, to testify and sign a statement concerning his Revolutionary War service. He said that living with him were his wife Mary, age 58, who had been lame for 30 years, and his daughter Marsha, age 12. The pension records also state that "John Remington of Warwick, RI, qualifies for admission to the Society of Cinncinnati." (Pension File # S30053)

According to the book "Isaac Willey of New London, Conn., and his descendants" by Henry Willey, New Bedford, MA, 1888, p. 81, both John and his wife Mary were buried in one grave at North Adams, MA. Their funeral discourse was preached by Elder Leland, aged 85. This book gives John's date of death as 7 Feb 1840 and Mary's as 10 Feb 1840, both being buried 12 Feb 1840. These dates differ by one month from the dates in the pension file. A research trip to the Athanaeum in Pittsfield might clear up this discrepancy.

From "Berkshire Co., Mass., Probate Index, 1761 to 1900" page 243: John Remington, Adams, Adm., Jan 15 1840, #6117.

The Society of the Cincinnati was founded in 1783 for army officers who had served honorably for at least three years in the Revolution. It was to provide a context in which they could continue the friendships that had been established during the war, and through which they could provide financially for the livlihoods and families of those who had served their country so sacrificially. George Washington was chosen as the Society's first president. The French officers who had served alongside the Americans established a similar brother organization. Read more about the history of this organization at: [http://www.gwpapers.virginia.edu/articles/cincinnati/index.html] and also at Wikipedia.

Of interest -- from the website of Cincinnati, Ohio:
"Shortly after it was founded in 1788, the city was renamed Cincinnati in honor of the Society of the Cincinnati, an association of officers in the American Revolution (1775-1783). The organization itself was named after Roman statesman Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, whom legend held to be the model of virtue."

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher, and to other sources as noted herein.)

Jonathan served during the American Revolution from 1777 to 1779 as a Sergeant in Captain Thomas Carlisle's and Captain Garzia's companies, and in Colonel Robert Elliott's artillery regiment. The Revolutionary War Pension file for Jonathan Remington can be viewed at the National Archives and Records Administration (microfilm #W7559). His widow, Sarah (Rhodes) (Potter) (Remington) Greene, was age 86 in 1850 when application for the pension was made. Because Jonathan had died many years previously, in 1808, she told what she knew about Jonathan's Revolutionary War service. A statement was also made by Sarah's brother, William Nehemiah Rhodes, in which he said that Jonathan had served in the artillery with his brother John Remington.

These statements were attested to by Seth Burke, who was "well acquainted with John and Jonathan formerly of Warwick. They were brothers, and neighbors to me." Reportedly, John was a Lieutenant and Jonathan a Sergeant. Jonathan's military service was also attested to by Mary Aborn of Pawtuxet, age 82 at the time of the pension hearing in 1850. Born around 1767/68, she would have been approximately age 9 in 1776. She stated that John and Jonathan (probably stationed at Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI) "were in the habit of visiting at the house of my grandmother where I used to often see them, and they used to talk to me. I was a child of 9 or 10. My grandmother and husband was their uncle." (She was probably Mary/Marcy/Mercy Rhodes, d/o Malachi Rhodes & Waite Fenner. This makes sense, because her grandmother would have been Mercy Fenner, who married Stephen Remington as her second husband.)

    Remington, Jonathan, private, Col. Elliott's regiment, 1776; pay due L 39 8 11 (Arnold's "Vital Record of RI" Vol. 12, Revolutionary Rolls & Newspapers, p. 240; also "Colwell's Spirit of '76")

Sometime before 1780 Jonathan relocated to Berkshire County, MA. Town histories give evidence that he also served in the military there.

See "History of the Town of Cheshire, Berkshire County, Mass.," by Raynor & Petitclerc, Clark W. Bryan & Co, 1885:

Jonathan Remington - 2nd Regiment in Division & 2nd in Brigade

Jonathan Remington is in the 1790 census at Adams, MA: 2 free white males 16+, 1 free white male <16, and 7 free white females. I suspect his brother John and family may have been living with them, and they aren't listed separately in this census.
Since the 1790 Census at Hancock, MA, lists another Jonathan Remington (possibly s/o Jonathan & Lorana), it may be that some of the above military records for Berkshire County, MA, could refer to him. However, the names listed for Col. Simond's regiment are names known to be of the community established by Rhode Islanders at Cheshire. It is also known that Jonathan and his brother John came to the Adams/Cheshire area and established families. John stayed in this area, but Jonathan relocated to Lansingburgh/Troy, NY around 1796, after his first wife died.

He was known in Adams and Cheshire as Colonel Jonathan Remington, and is referred to as such in the town records. He is also named as Jonathan Remington, Esq. Jonathan was owner of a tavern and store located on the southwest corner of the crossroads at the summit of the hill in Cheshire; this also may have included a hotel. At various times he served as the Town Moderator (chosen 1 Apr 1793), Justice of the Peace, Representative to the General Court at Boston, and sealer of brick molds. He is listed as a charter member of the Franklin Lodge of Masons. The names of "Jonathan and Phebe Rementon" appear in the early membership records of the First Baptist Church in Cheshire.

On 7 Aug 1792, Jonathan Remington Esq. was appointed one of a committee of nine to meet at Col. Remington's on the first Monday of September. On 5 Nov 1792, Col. Remington was nominated to issue a warrant to call the town together.

In 1793, subscribers to incorporating Cheshire as a town included Jonathan Remington (18s pd) and John Remington (4s pd).

Jonathan is mentioned in the book "The Life and Times of Samuel Gorton," by Adelos Gorton, p. 191. It states his birth date and that he married (unknown wife); settled in Berkshire Cty., MA; served in the Rev. War; and frequently represented the district of Cheshire in the Legislature previous to 1793.

While in Lansingburgh, Col. Jonathan Remington was a subscriber to "The Gleaner" by Judith Sargent Murray.

"I found these somewhere in the past years and made a brief note of them. It may have been in 'The Berkshire Quarterly.' Thought you might be interested if you don't already have them."

He also served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in the Pawtuxet Rangers, 1781 (see "Rev. War -- Burial Place & Service of RI Patriots" at the Knight Library in Providence).

On 20 September 1800, a meeting of the Warwick Town Council was specially convened. Those present were Benjamin Arnold, Henry Remington, Jonathan Ellis?, and Squire Millard. Henry Remington was appointed to inspect the stage "that runs from East Greenwich to Providence through Warwick." He was "empowered to stop said stage and to examine said stage"; and the stageman was to be directed not to land any passenger or baggage in Warwick without his permission. The penalty was $100. James Rhodes was appointed to likewise inspect the stage at the Village of Pawtuxet. (record found at RI Historical Society Library, Manuscript Room)

BSR includes another son named John Pearce Remington, b. c. 1787, who had a daughter Elizabeth. (? no documentation given ?)

From the booklet "The Walking Tour of Historic Apponaug Village," published by the Warwick Economic Development Department, and originally produced in pamphlet form by The Warwick Museum in 1989 -- concerning the Henry Remington House (ca. 1800/01, with later alterations), 3376 Post Road: "This gable-roofed, center-chimney Federal dwelling with pedimented fanlight doorway was remodeled during the Victorian era when the sash was replaced and a bay window added on the south side. It is used as a storehouse for the building at the rear, which was once a favorite haunt of quahoggers and rough & tumble seamen, but is now a family restaurant. The house was built by Henry Remington, a Revolutionary War soldier and judge of the Rhode Island Supreme Court. This area became known as 'Judge's Row,' and was once the most significant part of the Village."

This is now The Remington House Inn, a very nice restaurant.
