  1. 1.  Elizabeth Unknown was born Abt 1640; died Aft Jun 1685.

    Notes:

Elizabeth was probably not William's first wife, as implied by the wording in his will. He may have married Elizabeth after 1660 (see notes for William).

William's children may have been by his first wife.

A posting on a message board (L-Sweet) suggests that Elizabeth later married Philip Sweet. I have not yet seen evidence of this, so more research is needed.

Elizabeth married William ALLEN, I Abt 1660. William was born Between 1634 and 1640, Wales, Yorkshire, England; died Abt Jun 1685, Portsmouth or West Barrington, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 2. Mary ALLEN  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1661, Prudence Island, Portsmouth, RI; died Abt 1710, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery WK14, Remington Lot, Cowesett Rd., Warwick, RI.
    2. 3. William Allen, II  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1665, Prudence Island, Portsmouth, RI; died Abt Jul 1740.

  1. 2.  Mary ALLEN Descendancy chart to this point (1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1661, Prudence Island, Portsmouth, RI; died Abt 1710, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery WK14, Remington Lot, Cowesett Rd., Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

The Allen family were of Prudence Island, according to "Representative Men of Old Families of Southeastern MA," V. I, p. 173.

I have estimated Mary's year of birth, assuming that she was about 20 when she was married, and that none of her children were multiple births. Martha Benns gives her year of death as 1710, the same as for her husband Thomas (see Remington book at Rhode Island Historical Library). She is called Marie in her father's will (William Allin, 2 June 1685 Portsmouth, RI), but Mary in her husband's will (1710 Warwick, RI).

It is unclear exactly where she was born.

Mary married Thomas REMINGTON, I Abt 1681. Thomas (son of John REMINGTON, II and Abigail ACIE) was born 4 Feb 1655/56, Andover, MA; died 23 Jul 1710, Warwick, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery WK14, Remington Lot, Cowesett Rd., Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

    8. 16. Jonathan Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1702, Portsmouth or Warwick, RI.
    9. 17. Mary Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1704, Warwick, RI.
    10. 18. Prudence Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1706, Warwick, RI.

  2. 3.  William Allen, II Descendancy chart to this point (1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1665, Prudence Island, Portsmouth, RI; died Abt Jul 1740.

    Notes:

William's will is dated 10 Jan 1735/36, and proved 14 Jul 1740. It mentions his wife, Martha; and children William, John, Ebenezer, & Margaret, wife of Thomas Lawton of Bristol; grandson William, son of John; and grandson James. William Allin/Allen, Jr., reportedly resided at Portsmouth.

Portsmouth land evidence has numerous deeds involving the Allen family and land on Prudence Island.

He may be the William Allin that was admitted a freeman of Portsmouth on 6 June 1692, along with Thomas Remington.

William Allen is mentioned as a son-in-law in the 1718 will of James Sweet of Portsmouth, RI.

William married Martha Sweet Abt 1690. Martha (daughter of James Sweet and Hannah Unknown) was born Abt 1670. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 19. William Allen, III  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1691; died 1777.

Mercy married John Barnes 1 Jan 1701/02. [Group Sheet]

  4. 5.  Sarah Allen Descendancy chart to this point (1.Elizabeth1) was born Aft 1667.

  5. 6.  Thomas Allen Descendancy chart to this point (1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1669, Prudence Island, Portsmouth, RI; died 12 Aug 1719, Barrington, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 6, Bay Spring and Adams Aves., Barrington, RI.

    Notes:

It is said that Thomas and his wife settled in Swansea, MA. However, apparently his daughters married North Kingstown men.

One genealogy says Thomas was born in Jan 1668; this needs more research to confirm.

    ALLIN THOMAS 1669c - 11 AUG 1719 BA006

Thomas married Anna Barnes 24 Sep 1694, Swansea, MA. Anna (daughter of Thomas Barnes and Prudence Albee) was born Abt 1669; died 5 Apr 1758; was buried , Historical Cemetery 6, Bay Spring and Adams Aves., Barrington, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 23. Elizabeth Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born 29 Nov 1695; died 28 Feb 1726/27; was buried , Barrington, RI.

    5. 27. Alethea Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born 2 Apr 1704.
    6. 28. Thomas Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born 13 Oct 1706.
    7. 29. Abigail Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born 30 Aug 1709.

  6. 7.  John Allen Descendancy chart to this point (1.Elizabeth1) was born 26 Oct 1670; died Abt Mar 1746/47, North Kingstown, RI.

    Notes:

John Allin/Allen was the first Allen who came to Quidnessett, so he is likely the ancestor of the many generations of Allens in that area. He left Prudence Island and purchased land in North Kingstown in 1705.

John's will, proved 7 Apr 1747 NK, mentions wife Sarah; sons Thomas, William, & Jonathan; daughters Phebe Slocum, Elizabeth (?) Fairbanks, Bathsheba Johnson, and Mary Card.

When I was a child in the 1950s, our family church was Quidnessett Baptist Church on Post Rd., North Kingstown, RI. One of my first Sunday School teachers was Cora Allen, wife of Harry Allen. Other Allens in their family line still attend there. In fact, the first pastor there was an Allen, back in the mid-1800s.

John married Unknown Wife Abt 1690. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 30. Thomas Allen, Sr.  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1692; died 1780.
    2. 31. William Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1694.
    3. 32. Phebe Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1696.
    4. 33. Bathsheba Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1698.
    5. 34. Mary Mercy Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1700.
    6. 35. Elizabeth Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1702.
    7. 36. Jonathan Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1704.

John married Sarah Mansfield Aft 1701. Sarah (daughter of Moses Mansfield and Mercy Glover) was born Abt 1677; died Abt 1748. [Group Sheet]

  7. 8.  Matthew ALLEN Descendancy chart to this point (1.Elizabeth1) was born Between 20 Nov 1673 and 1675, Portsmouth, RI.

    Notes:

The transcription of the Portsmouth records, an online version of James N. Arnold's Vital Record of RI, has Matthew's birth year as 1675. So, without having seen the original, I would say it is either 1673 or 1675, since the numbers could have been difficult to decipher.

There's a will for a Matthew Allen of North Kingstown, dated Apr 1759, proved 11 Feb 1760. I don't know if it's for this particular Matthew or not -- probably not.

Matthew married Phebe Unknown 2 May 1700, Portsmouth, RI. Phebe was born 3 Sep 1677, Portsmouth, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 37. Mercy Allen  Descendancy chart to this point
    2. 38. Phebe Allen  Descendancy chart to this point
    3. 39. Mary Allen  Descendancy chart to this point
    4. 40. Patience ALLEN  Descendancy chart to this point was born 29 May 1708, Portsmouth, RI.

Generation: 3

  1. 9.  William REMINGTON Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1682, Portsmouth, RI; died Abt 1 Mar 1764, RI; was buried 3 Mar 1764, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

William Rimington witnessed the will of Philip Sweet on 12 Dec 1709.

First of all, I am not at all sure that William is the father of our ancestor Joseph. At this point it is a possibility, placed here as a working model and subject to change. Research is ongoing to link together the Rhode Island Remingtons. Most of the Remingtons on this family tree are properly linked with documentation noted. However, in the case of a few families, a best-guess scenario is being used until further evidence comes to light. That is the case here.

The four names of the children have been chosen because they appear as names (not identified as siblings) in the Portsmouth town records. I am placing them here simply as a working model.

According to their father's will, William and his brother Thomas must have been at least 21 in 1710, with William receiving most of the property and designated as joint executor along with his mother; this might suggest that the two older sons were born c1687 and 1689. However, Torrey's "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" says the first child of record was born 1682, and that is the date assigned to Thomas in several reputable genealogies. Consequently, I have given William the birth year of 1682 as the oldest son. However, this means that if he is the one who married Mary Manton, he was at least 43 when they married. This opens up four possibilities: his birth year actually may be later, such as 1687; or, he married later in life; or, he married someone else first and Mary Manton was his second wife; or, he isn't the William who married Mary Manton, in which case he may have an unknown marriage c1700 and a son William Jr. who married Mary. This last idea is the one I have used here, for the time being.

William Remington of Warwick was made a freeman of the colony on 1 May 1711 (Bartlett, Records of RI, 4:114). He registered an earmark for his cattle "and other Creatures" on 1 Jan 1712/13 (Early Records of Warwick, p. 10). From this one might assume that William's birth year could not have been after 1690.

According to Oliver Payson Fuller's "The History of Warwick, RI," in 1712 William sold his share of the Remington farm, located on the northwest corner of Post Rd. & Cowesett Rd., but reserved the burying ground where his father and grandfather are interred. Portions of the Remington land were later bought by Thomas Jones Spencer & Thomas LeValley.

Where did William live after this land sale? I speculate that he may have gone to Prudence Island, where his mother's family resided, and where William himself may have been born.

I was informed of a reference to a couple named William & Abigail Remington in the East Greenwich Town Council records of Jan 1742/3 (source: Cherry Fletcher Bamberg, compiler & editor of "RI Roots" and "Gleanings.") Therefore, I have made a tentative assumption that this may be William, the son of Thomas & Mary, and that his wife is the Abigail referenced in the East Greenwich records. Abigail and her family had come to East Greenwich from Prudence Island but did not have the official permission or the financial means to stay there. Her husband William was employed for a year as a servant of Philip Arnold of Warwick, so the East Greenwich Town Council ordered that Abigail and her family be taken to the Arnold home.

    From Portsmouth Town Council records:

1729: William Remington of PI & family warned out of town of Po (Bk 3 pp 17 & 21)

1737: William Remington & family given certificate from Po to relocate to East Greenwich (Bk 3 p 260)

14 Feb 1742: William Remington of PI qualified with certificate for himself, wife, and children to reside in Warwick for 4-year term if Town Council there accept him (Bk 3 p 289)

20 Jun 1743: William Remington of PI qualified with certificate to reside at Providence with wife and children for 7-yr-term if Town Council there accept them (Bk 3 p 291)

Some or all of the above notes from the town records could refer to his (possible) son William who married Mary Manton.

SK land evidence, Jan 1722: William Remington witnessed documents of Ebenezer & Mary Smith, regarding bequeathing two negro children named Primus & Dinah. Could this William be the son of Thomas & Mary (Allen) Remington, of Warwick? It is in the correct time frame. However, he might be the individual mentioned in the last paragraph below, who was "of Jamestown" in 1733 (h/o Mary Manton). (I have placed that other William, schoolmaster, as possible son of this William.)

At the funeral of a William Remington on 3 March 1764, Elder John Gorton preached on the text John 5:25. I am not sure if that was this particular William Remington, but for the time being I am using that date here, pending further research. (source: Bamberg, Cherry Fletcher. Elder John Gorton and the Six-Principle Baptist Church of East Greenwich, RI. Greenville, RI: RI Genealogical Society, 2001; p. 53)

In addition, there was a William Remington, of Jamestown, who was a schoolmaster in 1733. He was most likely the same William Remington who was a schoolmaster at Prudence Island. He married (after 7 Aug 1723) Mary Manton, of Edward, and had several children, including Elizabeth & Anne (m. Vial, had a son John). He is possibly the William Remington who died at Cranston 21 Apr 1768. These two Williams could easily be confused, since apparently they lived during the same time. Could they be father and son? That is my assumption here for the purpose of linking them to the family tree. (needs more research to determine and confirm relationships)

William married Abigail UNKNOWN Abt 1703, RI. Abigail was born Abt 1685; died Aft Jan 1742/43. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 41. Josiah Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1703, Warwick or Portsmouth, RI; died Between 1745 and 1747.
    2. 42. William Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1705, Prudence Island, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI; died 21 Apr 1768, Cranston, Providence Co., RI.
    3. 43. John Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1710.
    4. 44. Thomas Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1714.
    5. 45. Joseph REMINGTON  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1718, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI; died Between 1790 and 1800, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; was buried , Pleasant View Cemetery, Stone Church Rd., Tiverton, RI.

  2. 10.  Thomas REMINGTON, II Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1685, Portsmouth, RI; died 25 Sep 1723, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

BSR has his name as Thomas William Remington.

According to "The History of Warwick, RI" by Oliver Payson Fuller, Thomas Remington, Jr., bought farm #2 on the Cowesett plat. It was purchased from Samuel Barnes of Swansea, but had originally been granted to John Smith and then to Lieut. Eliza Collins's children, namely Eliza (Eliezar or Elisha?) & William. This large plantation was on the northeast corner of Route 2 (Quaker Lane) and Route 3 (Cowesett Rd.,) and adjoined the farm to the east which had been purchased by his father Thomas.

Thomas married Maplet GORTON 28 Dec 1710, Warwick, RI. Maplet (daughter of Benjamin GORTON and Sarah CARDER) was born 1690, Warwick, Kent County, RI; died Aft 18 Aug 1723. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 46. Maplet Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 11 Jul 1712, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died Aft 6 Feb 1772.
    2. 47. Mary Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 17 May 1715, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died Abt Apr 1806, West Greenwich, RI.
    3. 48. Stephen Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 26 Jun 1720, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died Between Mar 1743/44 and 6 Feb 1772, RI.
    4. 49. Thomas REMINGTON, III  Descendancy chart to this point was born 19 Aug 1723, Warwick, RI; died 12 Apr 1808; was buried , Warwick, RI, Historical Cemetery 60, off Cowesett Rd. near Rt. 2.

  3. 11.  Stephen Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Between 1689 and 1696, Portsmouth or Warwick, RI; died Abt 16 Dec 1785, Pawtuxet, Cranston, RI.

    Notes:

Stephen is mentioned in his father's will.

Stephen & Lydia Remington signed a receipt for a legacy "from the estate of my uncle" Francis Stevens of Rehoboth; dated sometime between 20 Jan 1731/32 and 21 Apr 1732. (source: Bristol County, MA, Probate Records 1687 - 1745 p. 234, on Family Archive CD #502)

Warwick Land Evidence, dated 22 Nov 1736: Stephen Remington of Providence, mariner, sold to Jonathan Remington of East Greenwich, mariner, one lot in Chippowinoxit, Warwick, Lot #16, one and one-half acres; signed by Stephen Remington, witnessed by Dan Remington. (These three were brothers.)

Scituate Land Evidence Vol. 3, p. 278 records a deed dated 28 March 1747, in which Stephen Remington and Lydia R. his wife sell "to Thomas Barnes of Glocester 361 1/2 acres bordering the southerly side of Wilkinson's land, part of the original right of William White and of Benjamin Herington."

Also, an earlier Scituate deed dated 31 Dec 1742 identifies Lydia as "Lydia Remington, formerly Rhodes, daughter of Peleg Rhoads."

Notes from the Mary E. Rice Collection, concerning Cranston land evidence: on 18 March 1784, Stephen Remington sold one lot of land in Pawtuxet to Rhodes Greene; "Marcy Remington, wife of the above-said Stephen," surrenders her dower right. On 10 Feb 1785, Stephen Remington sold land to Capt Josiah Haines. This document was signed by Stephen & Marcy Remington. (Cranston bk 4, p10)

In 1741 a Stephen Remington refused the Captaincy of the Providence County Militia.

In 1743 his brother Joseph was involved in a Scituate land transaction, deeding land to his son Thomas.

In 1745, a Stephen Remington, Justice of the Peace for Providence, refused reappointment to the office in June.

Since there seem to be two Stephen Remingtons born around 1696, one of Thomas of Warwick, and the other of Stephen of Jamestown, it is possible that the data from the two has been confused by some researchers. I know that one married Lydia Rhodes, daughter of Peleg, and according to genealogist Martha A. Benns the other married Mercy Fenner, widow of Thomas. However, I believe Benns was incorrect in this, and that Stephen of Warwick married both of these women. The RI Cemetery Database records Mercy Remington's grave, but not the others, so does not help sort out these individuals.

Although Benns has paired the Stephen of Jamestown with Mrs. Fenner, no documentation is noted. It seems more likely that Mercy would have been a second wife for the Stephen of Warwick, especially since Mercy is buried in Warwick. That is the way that Boyd Scott Remington's chart at RIHSL lists them, and I concur with him in this instance; so I have placed Mercy with this Stephen, of Warwick.

Additional evidence is the death announcement for this Stephen, "a noted nautical Commander," who died at Pawtuxet in his 90th year.

Martha Benns has noted the date of death for Stephen Remington of Jamestown as 24 Dec 1785. However, that was the date of the death announcement for this Stephen, of Warwick, published in the Providence Gazette.

His will mentions a wife "Marcy," but no children. It also mentions friend Christopher Sheldon and his five children, including the oldest son named Remington.

James N. Arnold's "Family Notes" at the Knight Memorial Library has Stephen's dates as: 1689 - 16 Dec 1785.

A typewritten Remington genealogy given to Dot White of the Roger Williams Family Association gives Stephen's year of birth as 1695; it also says he died 16 Dec 1785. While it mentions his second wife as Marcy or Mercy (Unknown), it also lists three children by his second wife: Lydia, Mary, & Rosanna. However, this information is erroneous and most likely due to a misreading of Stephen's will (or abstract of his will). Stephen's will mentions three daughters of said friend Christopher Sheldon: Lydia, Mary, & Rosanna, all surname Sheldon. If Stephen & Mercy had any children, they are not in the Warwick city records and are not mentioned in his will.

Interestingly, "The Fenner Family," a comprehensive genealogy by Mrs. Eva Fenner and others, agrees with my conclusions concerning Mercy Sheldon as the wife of both Thomas Fenner and Stephen Remington. [http://www.fennerfamily.com/pdf/four.pdf]

Stephen married Lydia Rhodes Aft 15 Jun 1720. Lydia (daughter of Peleg Rhodes and Sarah Stevens) was born Abt 1698; died Aft 15 Jun 1756. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 50. Matthew Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Between 1721 and 1727; died 1784.
    2. 51. Peleg Remington, I  Descendancy chart to this point was born 9 May 1736, Warwick, RI; died 9 Jun 1776, At sea; was buried , Historical Cemetery 3, Post Rd., Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI.

Stephen married Mercy Mary Sheldon Between Jun 1756 and 3 Aug 1774. Mercy (daughter of Nicholas Sheldon, Sr. and Abigail Tillinghast) was born Abt 28 Jul 1709, Providence, RI; died 24 Nov 1802; was buried , Historical Cemetery 3, Post Rd., Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

  4. 12.  John Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1690, Portsmouth, RI; died 18 Jul 1723, Providence, RI.

    Notes:

The Remington chart by Boyd Scott Remington at RIHSL has the following information for this John Remington:
born 1695 at Warwick, RI, died 8 Jul 1723 at Johnston, RI; freeman 1718; purchased land on Drybrook 1721, retained in family until 1835; married Mariam Sweet; had son Joshua born 1720, died 15 Aug 1787 at Johnston. Mariam (Sweet) Remington later married Ebenezer Greene (b. 8 Feb 1701) on 1 Aug 1724; she married third Edward Capron on 1730.

The chart also shows the son Joshua marrying Elizabeth King, b. 1730, d. 18 Apr 1824. Supposedly they had 7 or 8 children, including a son Caleb and a daughter Mariam.

No documentation is provided. This needs more research. However, I am including BSR's information on John's son Joshua because it is the link to Caleb Remington & Roby Warner, whose information I have researched and confirmed. Note, that Joshua is Caleb's father has not been personally verified by me; or, that Mariam's husband is the John Remington in this family group.

John married Mariam Blackington Abt 1720. Mariam (daughter of Pentecost Blackington and Ann Pederick) was born Abt Mar 1694/95, Marblehead, MA; died Aft 1756. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 52. Joshua Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 1720; died 15 Aug 1787; was buried , Johnston, RI.

  5. 13.  Daniel Remington, Sr. Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1692, Portsmouth or Warwick, RI; died Abt 16 Sep 1786, Warwick, RI; was buried 18 Sep 1786, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

Daniel Remington was ensign of Militia, 2nd Company for Warwick, in 1730 - 1733. Very likely it was this Daniel.

He is probably the Daniel Remington listed for Warwick in the 1774 RI Census.

In the book "Remington Family" Martha A. Benns has Daniel's date of birth as 18 October 1681, but this is too early because he is said to be under 21 in his father's will dated 1710. Cherry Fletcher Bamberg has the year as 1689.

Daniel married Ann Gorton 16 Feb 1722/23, Warwick, RI. Ann (daughter of Samuel Gorton and Elizabeth Collins) was born 19 Feb 1695/96, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:

    4. 56. Peleg Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Aft 1727; died Aft 1774.
    5. 57. Anne Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1732.
    6. 58. Thomas Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1734; died Bef 20 Dec 1789.
    7. 59. Ruel Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1736, Warwick, RI; died Aft 1790.

  6. 14.  Joseph Remington, I Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1694, Portsmouth or Warwick, RI; died 22 Sep 1763, Cranston, RI.

    Notes:

A Scituate deed records a land transaction between James Tucker and Joseph Remington, both of Warwick, dated 15 Oct 1731. Mr. Tucker sold Mr. Remington land in Scituate on the banks of the Pawtuxet River, bounded by Othniel Gorton's land. Witnesses were Ezekiel Warner and Samuel Barton, and the deed was recorded 3 Jan 1732. Interestingly, Othniel's wife was Mercy Burlingame, aunt to Margaret Burlingame, Joseph Remington's wife. (Scituate Deeds, Births, & Marriages, Vol. 1, p. 48)

Presumably the family moved from Warwick to Scituate around this time.

On 15 March 1743, Joseph Remington, of Providence, deeded to his son Thomas Remington, of Scituate, and his heirs, a parcel of land in Scituate bounded by the Seven Mile Line, westerly northwesterly and northeasterly of the Pawtuxet River, northeasterly of Edward Potter's land.

Joseph's will mentions his wife Margarett; sons Thomas, Joseph, & Lippitt; and daughter Martha Collins. If Stephen and Margaret were actually his children, they must have died before the date of his will. Daughter Margaret may have been the Margaret Remington who married Ebenezer Allin on 21 May 1761 (this needs more research to confirm).

From Barbara Chase: "Date of death -- Cranston, RI Town Council Bk 1; p. 170 'Joseph Remington of Cranston . . . yeoman who departed this Life on 22nd Day of September AD 1763 . . . ' His wife Margaret as sole executrix of his LWT was granted letters of administration . . . If you follow the land records you can easily place Joseph & Margaret Remington and most of their children in what is now the southeast corner of Scituate and the southwest corner of Cranston. They are buried there. Their lands were on both sides of Seven Mile Rd. (then portion of the original 17th century Seven Mile Line) that led to records in both towns."

Joseph married Margaret Burlingame 29 Sep 1717, Warwick, RI. Margaret (daughter of Thomas Burlingame and Martha Lippitt) was born 1696, Cranston, RI; died Aft 25 Jan 1771. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 60. Thomas Remington, Sr.  Descendancy chart to this point was born 24 Feb 1718/19, Warwick, RI; died Aft 1774.
    2. 61. Joseph Remington, II  Descendancy chart to this point was born 21 Jan 1720/21, Warwick, RI; died 6 Jul 1800, Scituate, RI.
    3. 62. Martha Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 18 Mar 1724/25, Warwick, RI.
    4. 63. Lippitt Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 17 Dec 1729, Warwick, RI.
    5. 64. Stephen Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 25 Jan 1733/34, Providence, RI; died Bef 28 Jun 1756.
    6. 65. Margaret Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 20 Feb 1736/37, Providence, RI; died Bef 28 Jun 1756.

  7. 15.  Matthew Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1700, Portsmouth or Warwick, RI; died Bef 25 Jul 1771.

    Notes:

This family group needs more research. The information from the book "Remington Family" compiled by Martha A. Benns, differs from the genealogy chart by Boyd Scott Remington at RIHSL. Benns has Martha Randall marrying this Matthew Remington, but it seems that she was born too late to be his wife. Rather, these two marriages seem to fit this Matthew's date of birth. "The Children and Grandchildren of Thomas Eastabrooks of Swansea, Mass." by William Jones, does not specify which Matthew Remington was married to Rachel. However, the marriage intention at Attleboro says he was "Matthew Remington of Warwick," so that is a clue that he belongs in this family group.

It is possible that Benns is correct, that this Matthew had a third marriage -- to Martha Randall, because we do not know when his second wife, Rachel, died. Possibly these two Matthews are one and the same individual. I have placed Martha Randall as a wife of this Matthew's nephew, son of Stephen.

Matthew married Hepsibah Blackington 12 Sep 1724, Attleborough, MA. Hepsibah (daughter of Pentecost Blackington and Mary Bonfield) was born 27 Dec 1702, Attleboro, MA. [Group Sheet]

Matthew married Rachel Estabrook 24 Jan 1733/34, Swansea, MA. Rachel (daughter of Thomas ESTABROOK, Jr. and Elizabeth THURBER) was born 21 May 1712; died Aft 24 Jul 1749. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 66. Thomas Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 23 May 1736, Swansea, MA.
    2. 67. Rachel Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 28 Mar 1743, Swansea, MA.
    3. 68. Hepsibeth Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 24 Jul 1749, Warren, RI.

  8. 16.  Jonathan Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1702, Portsmouth or Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

Jonathan & Lorana were married at Providence, RI; had children born and/or registered at East Greenwich, RI; and probably moved to Berkshire County, MA, sometime after Nov 1736 but before July 1741 (see notes below). They may have had other children, and -- Jonathan may have married again. These are unsolved mysteries at this point. One of their children, Jonathan, appears to have returned to Rhode Island, at least for a while.

Warwick Land Evidence, dated 22 Nov 1736: Stephen Remington of Providence, mariner, sold to Jonathan Remington of East Greenwich, mariner, one lot in Chippowinoxit, Warwick, Lot #16, one and one-half acres; signed by Stephen Remington, witnessed by Dan Remington. (These three were brothers. This land was most likely a narrow waterfront lot extending from Post Rd. down to the cove, in the area just south of Cowesett Rd. This area is still called Cheppowinoxet.)

The following probably applies to this Jonathan:
In an official document dated 18 July 1741, Thomas Rice, Esq., Sherrif of the County of Providence, refers to an act of the General Assembly of the Colony of RI in sessions held at Providence on the last Wednesday of Oct 1736, concerning "an act for making the real estate of a person that has left this colony or concealed themselves therein or do not live in this government liable for the payment of debts . . . By virtue of which said act the lands or real estate of Jonathan Remington late of East Greenwich in Providence County, mariner, has been attached at the suits of John Walton of Warwick -- merchant, James Gould of Newport, and Mercy Gorton of Warwick, innholder . . . judgments were obtained by John Walton and Mercy Gorton against Jonathan Remington at the last Inferior Court of Common Pleas held at Providence on the second Tuesday of December last, and by James Gould at the last Inferior Court of Common Pleas held at Newport in November." Jonathan Remington's land was sold at "Public Venue" for 97 pounds 10 shillings, to Philip Arnold of Warwick and John Potter of Providence, Esq. Thomas Rice, Sherriff, acknowledged receipt in bills of credit . . .

"Philip Arnold & John Potter have been conveyed a certain tract of land in Warwick and by examination containing 269 acres more or less it is all the part or parcel of a certain farm number 17 in The Grand Purchase of Warwick belonging to the said Jonathan Remington, bounded on the north by the farm of John & Richard Waterman, southerly by Warwick's southern boundary, westerly by the RI/CT border, easterly however as per plot of land or however otherwise bounded or reputed to be bounded." Dated 18 July 15th yr of George II, 1741. Recorded at Warwick 5 Nov 1741 in 7th Great Book of Land Evidence by John Wickes, Town Clerk.

(above record found at RI Historical Library, Manuscript Room, Providence, RI)

Did he have a second wife named Susannah? A newspaper entry of Oct. 1753 announced the marriage of Jonathan, of Jonathan & Susanah Remington of East Greenwich, to Mary Thurston. Or was that another Jonathan?

A notation in "One Hundred and Sixty Families" by John Osburne Austin, p. 13, suggests that she was b 1703 and that her name was Susanna Lorana Arnold." (Definitely needs more research.)

Jonathan married Lorana Arnold 16 Nov 1726, Providence, RI. Lorana (daughter of Stephen Arnold, Jr. and Mary Sheldon) was born 1703, Providence, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 69. Caleb Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 2 Jul 1728, East Greenwich, RI.
    2. 70. Jonathan Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 20 May 1730, East Greenwich, RI; died 1805.
    3. 71. Thomas Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 16 Jun 1732, East Greenwich, RI.

  9. 17.  Mary Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1704, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

Warwick Vital Records record the marriage of a Mary Remington to William Backer, 28 July 1724. The bride may have been this Mary.

  10. 18.  Prudence Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1706, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

I have wondered if she may have been a single mom, possibly the mother of "Thomas Remington, of Prudence," who was b c1735/36 and living in Coventry, RI, in the 1790 Federal Ccensus. This is only speculation in an attempt to explain this notation on the census, as well as explain Thomas's mystery parentage. If someone else knows who his parents are, I would like to know also.

  11. 19.  William Allen, III Descendancy chart to this point (3.William2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1691; died 1777.

    Notes:

According to a genealogy at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, this William Allen married Freelove Tillinghast. He is of the right age and location to have married her, but I have not yet found any documentation. Wayne G. Tillinghast in his book "The Tillinghasts in America" disputes that, offering evidence that William's wife could not have been Freelove Tillinghast -- at least not the daughter of Joseph Tillinghast.

I suspect that Freelove Allen who married William Remington is a daughter of William & Freelove Allen.

For the time being, I have placed Freelove Allen as a daughter in this family group, pending further research to confirm. These are assumptions only, based on incomplete evidence.

According to research of Wayne G. Tillinghast, William & Freelove Allen were admitted to membership in the Second Baptist Church of Newport on 4 March 1729 ("The Tillinghasts in America, The First Four Generations," RIGS 2006 p 150).

William married Freelove Unknown Abt 1714. Freelove was born Abt 1695; died 1767. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 72. Patience Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1715.
    2. 73. James Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1717.
    3. 74. John Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1719; died 1794.
    4. 75. Thomas Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1720.
    5. 76. Jonathan Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1722.
    6. 77. Freelove Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born 20 May 1722, Prudence Island, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI; died 17 Mar 1817, North Kingstown, RI.
    7. 78. William Allen, IV  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1730.

  12. 20.  John Allen Descendancy chart to this point (3.William2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1693, Prudence Island, Newport Co., RI; died Aft 1734.

    Notes:

John Allin of Prudence Island sold a tract of land to William Remington of Portsmouth, schoolmaster, for 750 pounds, 6 Jan 1738/9. This piece of land, 50 acres more or less, on the island was bounded as follows: S by my son William Allin, W on the Sea, N on the land of William Allin my honoured father, E on my own land. Witnessed by Caleb Hill & John Ingraham. (Po Land Ev. Bk 4 p. 142)

Also, on the same day, John Allin sold land on Prudence Island to his honoured father William Allin. This was 50 acres more or less, bounded as follows: S by William Remington, W on the Sea, N by "my own land." witnessed by William Remington & Caleb Hill.

Also, on the same day John Allin sold land to Caleb Hill (witnessed by William Remington & Giles Slocum); also to William Havens (witnessed by William Remington & Caleb Hill); and to Giles Slocum (witnessed by William Remington & Caleb Hill).

About a month later, on 3 Feb 1738/9, John Allin bought land from William Remington, schoolmaster, of Prudence Island in the Township of Portsmouth. The "sum of 750 pounds in good and lawful bills of public credit . . . truly paid by John Allin of Town, County, and Colony aforesaid . . . a tract of land being on Prudence Island . . . 50 acres be it more or less, butted and bounded as followeth: S by land of William Allin Jun, W on the Sea, N on land of William Allin Senior, E on land of sd. John Allin. Witnessed by Caleb Hill & William Sanford. (Po Land Ev. Bk 4 p. 195) This appears to be the same land bought by William Remington from John Allin a month earlier.

On the same day John Allin bought land from Caleb Hill, witnessed by William Remington; also from William Havens and from Giles Slocum. (Po Land Ev. Bk 4 p. 196, 197, & 198)

John married Rebecca Hill Abt 1712. Rebecca (daughter of Jonathan HILL, Jr. and Unknown Wife) was born Abt 1690; died Aft May 1735. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 79. William Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born 16 Jul 1714, Prudence Island, Portsmouth, RI.

  13. 21.  Margaret Allen Descendancy chart to this point (3.William2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1695.

Margaret — Thomas Lawton. Thomas was born Abt 1690. [Group Sheet]

  14. 22.  Ebenezer Allen Descendancy chart to this point (3.William2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1697.

    Notes:

According to a genealogy at Rootsweb's Worldconnect, this Ebenezer married a Remington girl and had four children: William, Patience, Ebenezer, & Mary; the son William married Mollie Fairbanks and Rachel Remington. (This needs verification.)

However, I do know that the William who married Rachel was s/o Ebenezer, so at least this part sounds correct.

  15. 23.  Elizabeth Allen Descendancy chart to this point (6.Thomas2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 29 Nov 1695; died 28 Feb 1726/27; was buried , Barrington, RI.

    Notes:

There's a will for a Matthew Allen of North Kingstown, dated Apr 1759, proved 11 Feb 1760. I don't know if it's for this particular Matthew or not.

Matthew — Ruth Stockbridge. [Group Sheet]

  17. 25.  Anna Allen Descendancy chart to this point (6.Thomas2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 2 Jul 1699.

    Notes:

When Rebekah married Thomas, she was the widow of Joseph Cole, and he was the widower of her sister Elizabeth.

Rebekah married Joseph Cole Abt 1722. Joseph died Bef 1731. [Group Sheet]

Rebekah married Thomas Hill, Sr. 25 Mar 1731, North Kingstown, RI. Thomas (son of Jonathan HILL, Jr. and Unknown Wife) was born Abt 1692, Prudence Island, RI; died 20 Apr 1768, North Kingstown, RI; was buried , Thomas Hill Lot, Forge Rd., North Kingstown, RI. [Group Sheet]

  22. 30.  Thomas Allen, Sr. Descendancy chart to this point (7.John2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1692; died 1780.

    Notes:

On 18 June 1741 Thomas Allin of North Kingstown sold land in Portsmouth to Samuel Clark of Boston; witnessed by Ebenezer Allin of Prudence Island.

Some of the children's names are missing or partly missing from the North Kingstown records, so I may have switched two or three of them - specifically Ann & Mary.

The will of Thomas (of John) was dated 1778 NK, proved 1780; mentions wife Ann and children Christopher, Mary, Martha, Thomas dec'd, Samuel, Margaret, and others (names lost).

This family seems to be very confused in published and online genealogies.

Daniel Gould Allen, in his Genealogy of the Allen Family (Google Books), has this family group quite mixed up. He has Thomas born in 1708 and having his first child in 1717. Not possible.

Thomas may have married a second time; I have included this marriage for this particular Thomas:
ALLEN Thomas, of John, and Ann Corey, of John, dec.; m. by Jeremiah Gould, Justice, Sept. 4, 1756; NK.

Thomas married Ann Unknown Abt 1713. Ann was born Abt 1694; died Aft 28 Jan 1734/35. [Group Sheet]

  32. 40.  Patience ALLEN Descendancy chart to this point (8.Matthew2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 29 May 1708, Portsmouth, RI.

    Notes:

For the present, I have made an assumption that this is her birth: ALLEN Patience, of Matthew and Phebe, May 29, 1708. (Vol. 1 P. 179, Portsmouth Births)

The name of Patience Allen as grandmother of Lucy Almy came from John Redfern, professional genealogist (contact information available on request).

Patience married William ALMY, Jr. 12 Jun 1731, Portsmouth, RI. William (son of William ALMY and Deborah COOK) was born Abt 1709; died Bef 6 Dec 1775. [Group Sheet]

Generation: 4

  1. 41.  Josiah Remington Descendancy chart to this point (9.William3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1703, Warwick or Portsmouth, RI; died Between 1745 and 1747.

    Notes:

A Josiah Remington is mentioned several times in the Portsmouth Town Council records. Also, a Josiah Remington is mentioned in the East Greenwich Town Council records, he having gone there from Prudence Island, Portsmouth. I have made an assumption that they are the same individual, and that he is or may be a son of William Remington whose wife Abigail who also went from Prudence Island to East Greenwich. This is purely speculation in piecing together the available evidence.

According to the East Greenwich records (source: Cherry Fletcher Bamberg, editor of RI Roots and Gleanings), Josiah testified that he came to East Greenwich from Portsmouth about April 1742. He is identified as "Josiah Remington of Prudence Island." He said he had lived in Portsmouth 10+ years, and made his living doing farm work, primarily as a day laborer. He said there were 11 in his family, which I take to mean two parents and 9 children. From this I guess he might have been born c1695-1700 and married c1720-1725.

Could he have been anyone's son other than William's? (such as Joseph Remington b 1654 or his son John b 1680, Jamestown records?)

1730 census of Prudence Island (Par 56):
    Josias Remington (Josiah)
    William Remington

Granted permit by Portsmouth to live elsewhere - 1743

Josiah Remington to Warwick (Par 91)

Above three excerpts from research by Charles Gregory Maytum "Paragraphs on Early Prudence Island"; and Remington family manuscript file.

    From Portsmouth Town Council records:

17 Aug 1732: Josiah Remington, a member of coroner's Grand Inquest appointed to investigate deaths of Negro and Indian men - possibly drowned by accident off Warwick shore and driven on shore at Prudence Island (Par 59; also Bk 3)

9 May 1743: Josiah Remington of PI given certificate to remove to Warwick and settle there for 4-year term if Town Council there accept him; sd Remington qualified (Bk 3 p 290)

From Warwick Town Coucil Records (courtesy of Cherry Fletcher Bamberg):

13 June 1743: Jeremiah Lippitt was ordered to issue a warrant to warn out Josiah Remington and his family.

16 June 1744: Josiah Remington produced a certificate for himself and his family from Portsmouth. The certificate was good for four years. The council refused to accept the certificate with the time restriction but told him that they would accept a standard one.

11 February 1744/5: Josiah Remington and William Wood and their families were in town without settlement and likely to become chargeable. The council ordered that a warrant be issued to "carry" them out of town.

6 April 1747: Josiah Remington of Warwick, deceased "some time since," leaving a small estate in Warwick. The council offered administration first to the unnamed widow and then to the son Peleg Remington who both refused. The clerk was to post notices in Warwick and surrounding towns asking creditors to come forward at the next quarterly meeting.

Josiah married Jane Unknown Abt 1725. Jane was born Abt 1705; died Aft 1774. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 107. Peleg Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1726; died Aft 20 Jun 1772.

  2. 42.  William Remington Descendancy chart to this point (9.William3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1705, Prudence Island, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI; died 21 Apr 1768, Cranston, Providence Co., RI.

    Notes:

This date of death is found in the Cranston Town Council meeting notes. It belongs to "William Remington of Cranston, schoolmaster." I am not sure that it belongs to this particular William, but at this point I merely am attempting to reconstruct a possible lineage for these individuals. Research is ongoing to determine the actual relationships among these Remington family members.

The will of William Remington, of Cranston, schoolmaster, is dated 2 Apr 1768 and was proved 1 June 1768. It mentions daughters Elizabeth Remington and Anne Vial, deceased; grandson John Vial son of dtr Ann deceased. Also mentioned is Waite Abbot dtr of Mary Abbot (no relationship specified). Executor was friend Dr. William Aldrich; witnesses were Benjamin Wescot Jr., William Burton, and Nils Higinbotham.

It is known that the William Remington who married Mary Manton was a schoolmaster on Jamestown, probably Prudence Island, and possibly elsewhere. Therefore it is a reasonable assumption to construct this family as I have done.

I have estimated the date of marriage based on the will of Mary's father, which implies that she was still single in 1723.

See notes for William (Sr). It has not been determined that this (Jr) is the William Remington who married Mary and had these three children, Elizabeth, Stephen, & Abigail, born in Little Compton but registered in Providence. He may or may not be the William Remington who married Mary Manton. Research is ongoing to sort out the data on the William Remingtons of RI.

The births of Elizabeth, Stephen, & Abigail, to parents identified as William & Mary (m.n. unknown), were recorded at Providence, but there is a notation that the first two were born at Little Compton and the third at Providence (source: microfilm at RI State Archives). See previous paragraphs -- I am not sure that these three children belong to this particular William.

    From Portsmouth land evidence:

WR of Po bought and sold land from/to John Allin, s/o Wm, of P.I., 6 Jan 1738/9 and 3 Feb 1738/9; this WR was a schoolmaster; he also witnessed three other deeds on 6 Jan 1738/9, along with Caleb Hill & William Havens; also witnessed three other deeds on 3 Feb 1738/9, along with Caleb Hill, John Allin, William Havens, & Giles Slocum. It appears that he bought and sold the same 50 acres, land bordered on three sides by three Allens (by John Allin - my own land, William Allin my honoured father, and my son William Allin) and on the fourth by the sea. WR bought 50 acres and a house in Jan, pd 750 pounds, witnessed by Caleb Hill & John Ingraham; and sold 50 acres in Feb., witnessed by Caleb Hill & Wm Sanford. No wives mentioned.
    (Po Land Ev Bk 4 p 142 & 195)

WR witnessed deed of land sale from Ebenezer Allen to John Remington, laborer,
3 or 30 June 1744. This was JR "late of Warwick, now of P.I." He paid 400 pounds for 20 acres. No wives mentioned. (Po Land Ev Bk 4 p 359)

    From Portsmouth Town Council records:

8 Aug 1743: William Remington schoolmaster ordered to depart this town (Bk 3 p 292)

8 Oct 1744: William Remington school-master (and three others) ordered to depart town with their respective families (Bk 4 p 4)

12 Oct 1744: Caleb Bennett was "served with warrant to remove William Remington, keeper of the school in the Southermost School-house belonging to this town, out of this Town" (Bk 4 p 7)

8 Dec 1746: William Remington, school-master, given certificate for himself and family to reside in Providence (Bk 4 p 19)

13 Nov 1752: William Remington served with order to draw 5 pounds old Tenor out of Town Treasury towards his support and relief; also served with certificate to reside in Town of Coventry (Bk 4 p 72)

12 Mar 1753: William Remington and family served with certificate to reside in Town of Coventry (same as above, with added words to include family); the following year on 9 Sep 1754 another schoolmaster of PI named Celly was warned out of Po, so perhaps this suggests that the family of William Remington, schoolmaster, finally left for good. (Bk 4 p 74)

From Warwick Town Council Records (courtesy of Cherry Fletcher Bamberg):

10 April 1749: William Remington and his family presented a certificate from Portsmouth and were accepted as inhabitants.

7 February 1749/50: William Remington, who had come to town with his family from Portsmouth was to be notified to appear.

William married Mary Manton Abt 1726. Mary (daughter of Edward Manton and Elizabeth Thornton) was born Abt 1702; died Bef 2 Apr 1768. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 108. Thomas Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1727.
    2. 109. William Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 17 Jun 1729, Prudence Island, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI; died 30 Jun 1812, North Kingstown, RI.
    3. 110. Elizabeth Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 5 Jan 1730/31, Little Compton, RI.
    4. 111. Stephen Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 26 Apr 1732, Little Compton, RI.
    5. 112. Abigail Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 9 Jun 1733, Providence, RI.
    6. 113. Ann Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1735; died Bef 2 Apr 1768.

  3. 43.  John Remington Descendancy chart to this point (9.William3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1710.

    Notes:

I have speculated that the following information in the Portsmouth land records could refer to this John:

John Remington late of Warwick, labourer, was a resident of Prudence Island by 3 or 30 June 1744 when he bought land from Ebenezer Allin yeoman of PI. JR paid 400 pounds for 20 acres abutted as follows: S on land of John Allin, E on the Bay or Saltwater, W & N on land of sd Ebenezer Allin the grantor. Witnessed by Daniel Pearce Jun & William Remington. No wives mentioned. (Po Land Ev Bk 4 p 359)

Could he be the John Remington of Warwick who had a wife named Freelove? He died in 1745.

  4. 44.  Thomas Remington Descendancy chart to this point (9.William3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1714.

    Notes:

Could this be the Thomas who became a captain and slave trader in Pawtuxet, and whose house later was owned by a Peleg Remington?

And/or he might be this Thomas referred to in Portsmouth land records:

Thomas Remington of Po, mariner, & wife Amy, sold house and land to Thomas Shaw of LC, tailor, for 800 pounds, 21 Nov 1761. This was bordered by David Lake's land on two sides, by Christopher Turner's on the third, and a highway on the fourth.
    (Po Land Ev Bk 6 p 42)

  5. 45.  Joseph REMINGTON Descendancy chart to this point (9.William3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1718, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI; died Between 1790 and 1800, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; was buried , Pleasant View Cemetery, Stone Church Rd., Tiverton, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, and to other sources as noted herein.)

Please be advised that I do not know for sure that Joseph is a son of William, or that these other individuals also placed here as children of William and siblings of Joseph actually belong here. At the present time this family group is merely a possible family constructed from individuals known to be living at Portsmouth in the 1700s, as was our ancestor Joseph. Research is ongoing to determine the parentage of these individuals, including Joseph. From location and family names, it seems very possible that Joseph was a descendant of Thomas Remington & Mary Allen, and also of a William Remington, as that name is found in a future generation.

The RI 1777 Military Census lists Joseph Remington age 50-60 U (unable to serve) at Tiverton, but notes "res. Portsmouth." This probably means that he originally had been from Portsmouth but later moved to Tiverton. (see next note).

14 May 1750: Joseph Remington qualified with certificate for himself and family from Portsmouth to reside in Tiverton (Po Town Council Bk 4 P 49).

Did they ever go from Portsmouth to Tiverton that year? (see next note)

From the town records of Portsmouth, RI: "The Ear Mark of the Creatures of Joseph Remmington is a fork on the Right Ear and a hapenny under ye same Ear and a Hapenny before & behind the Left Ear -- Entered on Record June ye 18th AD 1754 By Robt Dennis Tn Clerk." This very likely refers to our ancestor, which means that the family -- or at least his farm -- was in Portsmouth during the 1750s.

20 Jun 1757: Joseph Remington, wife & children, were given a certificate from Portsmouth to reside in Richmond (Po Town Council Bk 4 p 118).

According to a statement by his son Thomas, our ancestor, the family lived in South Kingstown but later moved to Tiverton sometime after 1760. According to son David's pension file, the family lived in Richmond when he was born.

I am not sure of his date of death -- needs more research. A Joseph Remington is living at Tiverton in the 1782 RI Census and 1790 Federal Census; he is not listed in 1800. This may indicate he died between 1790 and 1800.

A Joseph Remington witnessed the 22 Nov 1788 will of Mary Anthony, spinster, of Tiverton. Probably it was this Joseph. This needs more research.

According to the Burlingame Manuscript, he resided at Scituate and Tiverton. However, the Joseph Remington who was a son of Margaret (Burlingame) Remington lived at Scituate (not Tiverton) and was a different Joseph, based on research by Barbara Chase. Our Joseph lived at Portsmouth, South Kingstown and/or Richmond, and Tiverton.

As a result of reading Barbara's research into Scituate and Cranston land evidence, I have come to the conclusion that the published genealogies have confused two Josephs. One of them apparently was born in Warwick 21 Jan 1720/21 and moved to Scituate, where he died 6 Jul 1800. The other was born around the same time (location unknown but possibly Prudence Island), was married in Portsmouth, apparently lived in both Portsmouth and South Kingstown (or Richmond) and later moved to Tiverton (and possibly again Portsmouth for a while?), where he died between 1790 and 1800 (based on census records). However, his date of birth on the gravestone plaque at Tiverton is exactly the same as the date of birth for the one who died at Scituate. It appears that the descendants who had the plaque made were in error about Joseph's date of birth, having used the information for the other Joseph.

As a result of this research provided by Barbara, we now must do further research to determine who Joseph's parents are. Any leads are appreciated. Clues might be the names of his sons Benjamin, Joseph, & Thomas; and the names of his daughters Abigail, Phebe, Sarah, & Mary. David was most likely named after David Lake, father of Innocent.

David Lake was a resident of Portsmouth, which strengthens the likelihood that Joseph's parents lived there.

"There were three REMINGTONs in eighteenth century SK, based on the tax lists: David, John Jr., and Joseph."

Joseph married Innocent LAKE 10 Jul 1744, Portsmouth, RI. Innocent (daughter of David LAKE, Jr. and Mary WILCOX) was born Between 1718 and 1722, Portsmouth, RI; died 15 Apr 1809, Tiverton, RI; was buried , Pleasant View Cemetery, Stone Church Rd., Tiverton, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher, and to other sources as noted herein.)

A Remington family Bible record says that this Thomas Remington was one of triplets, the other two of whom died young. This Bible belonged to Mrs. Mary E. Remington, wife of James D. Remington, great-grandson of Thomas. However, Fuller's "History of Warwick" says that his son Thomas was one of triplets.

He is undoubtedly the Thomas Remington who in March 1744 agreed to take over management of the estate of his brother Stephen Remington, laborer of Warwick, who was "non compos mentis." The original document is witnessed and co-signed by Stephen and Daniel Remington, probably Thomas Jr. and Stephen's uncles.

Thomas was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, along with some of his sons. Oliver Payson Fuller, in his book "The History of Warwick, RI," says four of the Remington brothers (sons of Thomas III, likely the four oldest) were in the American army during the war of the Revolution. According to the manuscript "Revolutionary War -- Burial Place & Service of RI Patriots," found at the Knight Library in Providence (now at Providence Central Public Library), Thomas was a Private in the Pawtuxet Rangers in 1778. It says he was buried in the family lot on the Remington Farm, north side of Cowesett Road near Quaker Lane (Route 2).

This historical cemetery is located behind the Stop & Shop plaza at the intersection of Cowesett Rd. and Bald Hill Rd./Quaker Lane/Rt. 2. Thomas's gravestones (headstone and footstone) have been photographed.

In the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 17, pp. 204 & 205, there is a list of graves at or near this location. It refers to "the Remington farm now owned by George Dawley," and mentions an Arnold family burial plot northwest of his house, and another cemetery "on the Remington farm north of the house." This is where Thomas & Abigail are buried. This lot has about 15 marked burials, Remingtons and Arnolds, plus some unmarked graves.

According to early records described in "Family Notes" (formerly at Knight Library, now at Providence Central Public Library), this family's "Remington Farm" extended from Cowesett Rd. (at Quaker Lane) northward to the next road (probably the location of present-day Rt. 117) for a mile, then eastward a 1/2 mile, so that it was rectangular in shape. This was on the east side of Quaker Lane. According to Oliver Payson Fuller's "The History of Warwick, RI," it was Cowesett farm #2 on the old plat map laid out in the 1600s; it was originally owned by John Smith, and later by the heirs of Lieut. Eliza Collins, and subsequently by Samuel Barnes of Swansea, from whom it was purchased by Thomas Remington II (who died in 1723 at age 41).

Also on Cowesett Rd. but west of Quaker Lane (Rt. 2) was the "Col. Waterman Place," where our ancestors Capt. John & Mercy Waterman are buried (near the corner of Kulas & Cedar streets). This was on the south side of Cowesett Rd., roughly across from where Evelyn's Villa and the Cowesett Inn are today. Across from the Waterman place was the Arnold farm (the area where Pep Boys and the Ricci home are now located), purchased from Robert Potter's heirs by Israel Arnold of Pawtuxet in 1707.

An entry in Elder John Gorton's pastoral journal notes that he preached 23 Sept 1764 on I Peter 4:18 at Thomas Remington's [house]. Editor Cherry Fletcher Bamberg writes, "Although Thomas and Abigail Remington, who lived at Cowesett, were not official members of the church, they hosted occasional meetings and had a substantial running account with Elder Gorton in the mid-1760s. Purchases included needles of silk, thread, flour, 'Bisket,' snuff, wooden plates, and sundries" (p. 56). Gorton was a tailor by trade, but also a merchant who sold various foods, household items, and sundries.

In his will, dated 11 June 1798 proved 9 May 1808, Thomas Remington of Warwick, yeoman, gave to his [second] wife Sarah the household furniture, all she brought with her "at the time of our marriage," and all she has acquired since, a cow, heifer, etc. His son Thomas received lands in Coventry, with buildings thereon, he to pay legacies to his brothers John & Jonathan and to sisters Maplet Rice, Sarah Holden, & Mary Rice. Sons John and Jonathan were each given $10, as they already had their share [perhaps when they moved to Berkshire County, MA]. Each of his three surviving daughters was given $100 and the household furniture after the death of their [step] mother. Henry was given $240 and land; Benjamin received his father's mansion house and clock and all remaining of the homestead farm and rest of all his possessions, he to be executor.

  10. 50.  Matthew Remington Descendancy chart to this point (11.Stephen3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Between 1721 and 1727; died 1784.

    Notes:

According to the Remington chart by Boyd Scott Remington at RIHSL, this Matthew Remington was Captain of the 1st Cranston Company in 1763. Genealogist Martha A. Benns' book "Remington Family" has this Matthew (who married Martha Randall) as a son of Thomas & Mary (Allen) Remington; a Matthew is named in Thomas's will. However, it seems more likely that the earlier Matthew married Hepsibah Blackington (please see the notes for the other Matthew, who was "of Warwick"). An online genealogy has no parents noted for this one, but has his birth date as 12 September 1724 (source noted is "Descendants of William Randall") -- needs further research.

He is possibly the Mathew Rimenton listed as a resident of Coventry in the RI 1774 census (1 WM>16, 4 WM<16, 2 WF>16, 2 WF<16); also the Matthew Remmington 16 - 50 A, listed at West Greenwich, RI, in the 1777 RI Military Census.

The 1774 census data suggests that Matthew may have had four sons (?) born before 1774 in addition to two daughhters.

If this marriage to Martha Randall is a third marriage for the "other" Matthew, s/o Thomas & Mary (Allen) Remington, then we might conclude that Peleg did not have a brother Matthew (?). Genealogists differ on this. However, a note within parentheses in the genealogy entitled "John Remington of Massachusetts" in the possession of the Roger Williams Family Association (from Mrs. Adair), says that Peleg "and his brother left home when their father married a second time." This is evidence that Peleg did have a brother.

Matthew married Martha Randall 26 Dec 1755, Providence, RI. Martha (daughter of John Randall and Martha Williams) was born Abt 18 Mar 1724/25; died Between 1808 and 1809. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 135. Amey Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 1 Apr 1756, East Greenwich, RI; died 28 Apr 1828, Brookfield, Madison County, NY; was buried , Rural Cemetery, Brookfield, NY.
    2. 136. Abigail Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1773.

  11. 51.  Peleg Remington, I Descendancy chart to this point (11.Stephen3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 9 May 1736, Warwick, RI; died 9 Jun 1776, At sea; was buried , Historical Cemetery 3, Post Rd., Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

"Descendants of Roger Williams" Book I, p. 153 says Peleg was lost at sea in 1776. There is a single gravestone in Pawtuxet Cemetery (WK #3) for him and his wife Waite Remington. This has been photographed for my collection.

Information from Richard Allen Brownell, Sr.:
Peleg's specific dates of birth and death were received in an email from Mr. Brownell.
Peleg Remington was captain of a vessel in the Maritime Service and took the Oath of Allegiance to the Colonies in 1775.

He is likely one of the two Peleg Remingtons listed for Warwick in the 1774 RI Census.

A typewritten Remington genealogy given to Mrs. Dorothy White of the Roger Williams Family Association shows Peleg as a son of Stephen Remington & Lydia Rhodes. No specific documentation is provided.

A note in the papers of the Mary E. Rice Collection, excerpted from a copy of a letter written by Mrs. Rice to Virginia Adair, a descendant of Peleg Remington: "Dear Mrs. Adair, I have found that Peleg Remington is the son of Stephen & (guess what) a Lydia Rhodes. I will continue to check this . . . "

Peleg married Waite Rhodes 10 Jul 1757, Cranston, RI. Waite (daughter of Charles Rhodes and Deborah Greene) was born 25 Aug 1740, Warwick, RI; died 25 Oct 1810, Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 3, Post Rd., Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 137. Thomas Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 26 Sep 1758; died 15 Feb 1819, Pawtuxet, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 3, Post Rd., Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI.
    2. 138. Nancy Anna Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1760, RI; died 22 Feb 1826, Otsego, Otsego Co., NY; was buried , Old Chapel Burying Ground, Fly Creek, Otsego Co., NY.
    3. 139. Roseanna Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1762.
    4. 140. Peleg Remington, II  Descendancy chart to this point was born 22 Apr 1764; died Between 17 Jan and Apr 1838, Pawtuxet, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 3, Post Rd., Pawtuxet Village, Warwick, RI.
    5. 141. Phebe Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1766.
    6. 142. Russell Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1769.
    7. 143. Charles Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 1772; died 8 Jan 1810, Sierre Leone, Africa; was buried , Arnold-Pawtuxet Burial Ground, Harrison St., Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI.
    8. 144. Deborah Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 1772.

  12. 52.  Joshua Remington Descendancy chart to this point (12.John3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 1720; died 15 Aug 1787; was buried , Johnston, RI.

    Notes:

I have not as yet confirmed that Joshua is John's son, as indicated on the ancestry chart by Boyd Scott Remington. However, it is a reasonable assumption, particularly since Joshua had a daughter named Mariam, probably named after Mariam Sweet.

Joshua became a freeman in 1742, was appointed fence viewer for Johnston in 1759, and highway overseer in 1768. He is listed in the 1777 Military Census at Johnston, RI, along with sons Stephen & Joshua, Jr..

BSR says Joshua's grave is in a cemetery on Central Ave., Johnston, but there is no listing in the RI Cemetery Database. Perhaps there was no stone, or the stone has been taken.

Several cemeteries in Johnston are now labeled as "missing."

Is he the one who built the Remington farmhouse on Central Ave.? According to information on the back of the photo, it was built in 1713.

I have estimated the birth years for some of Joshua's children.

Joshua married Elizabeth King Abt 1747. Elizabeth (daughter of John King) was born 1730; died 18 Apr 1824, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 145. Caleb Remington, Sr.  Descendancy chart to this point was born 16 Sep 1747, Johnston, RI; died Between Feb and Sep 1836, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.

    4. 148. Mariam Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1753; died Abt 1794.
    5. 149. Mary Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1755.
    6. 150. Joshua Remington, Jr.  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1757, RI; died Jun 1796, Little Falls, NY.
    7. 151. Elizabeth "Betsy" Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 17 May 1759; died 19 Oct 1817, Johnston, RI; was buried , Historical Cemetery 27, Remington Lot, Central Ave., Johnston, RI.
    8. 152. Sarah Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1762; died 11 Jan 1834; was buried , Historical Cemetery 57, Johnston, RI.
    9. 153. Zerviah Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1764.

  14. 54.  Mary Remington Descendancy chart to this point (13.Daniel3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 17 Aug 1725, Warwick, RI; died Between 1750 and 1769.

Mary married Holden Rhodes Abt 1749. Holden (son of John Rhodes, Jr. and Catherine Holden) was born 20 May 1731, Warwick, RI; died 1774, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 154. Holden Rhodes, Jr.  Descendancy chart to this point was born 22 Sep 1750, Warwick, RI; died 1 Feb 1809.

  15. 55.  Daniel Remington, Jr. Descendancy chart to this point (13.Daniel3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 11 Feb 1726/27, Warwick, RI; died 8 Jan 1780, Warwick, RI; was buried 10 Jan 1780.

  16. 56.  Peleg Remington Descendancy chart to this point (13.Daniel3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Aft 1727; died Aft 1774.

    Notes:

I am adding Peleg to this family group based on an entry in "The Rhode Island 1777 Military Census" transcribed by Mildred M. Chamberlain, p. 120 (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1985). It says he is a son of Daniel, age 16 - 50 A, and a prisoner. Why was he a prisoner? This needs more research.

If he were a son of Daniel Jr., I think it would specify that, since both Daniel (60+) and Daniel Jr. (16 - 50 U) are listed also. I have no record of any marriage for Daniel Jr., so possibly he was physically or mentally hadicapped and never married (?).

Is he the same Peleg Remington, of Warwick, RI, who served in Capt Wall's Company in 1757 during the French & Indian War? Possibly.

There are two Peleg Remingtons listed for Warwick in the 1774 RI Census.

One Peleg Remington of Warwick had a wife named Nansey in 1750. Could it be this Peleg? I am not sure. For the present I have placed Nancy as the wife of another Peleg probably around the same age.

  17. 57.  Anne Remington Descendancy chart to this point (13.Daniel3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1732.

    Notes:

I don't know whether the marriage of Anne & Peleg belongs to this family group, but I making an assumption here, that "Anne Remington of Warwick" is a daughter of Daniel & Anne Remington. Apparently the birth of their son Thomas was never recorded in Warwick records, so perhaps this also was the case with Anne. (Needs further research.)

Anne married Peleg Rice 19 May 1754, Warwick, RI. Peleg (son of Nathan Rice and Sarah Spencer) was born 19 Dec 1730, East Greenwich, RI; died 25 May 1789. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 155. Lydia Rice  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1755.
    2. 156. Samuel Rice  Descendancy chart to this point was born 1757, East Greenwich, RI.

  18. 58.  Thomas Remington Descendancy chart to this point (13.Daniel3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1734; died Bef 20 Dec 1789.

    Notes:

The marriage record names him as Thomas Remington, of Daniel of Warwick. This is the most likely family group in which to place him. Several genealogists have done so, but realize it is an assumption or "educated guess." His birth is not found in the Warwick vital records along with Samuel, Mary, & Daniel.

He left his wife Freelove around Jan 1765, and lived "in adultery." She petitioned for divorce in 1771, and it was granted. Did Thomas have children by another woman, or have a second marriage? See notes for Freelove.

His daughter's marriage record mentions her father Thomas, dec'd; thus I have entered his date of death as bef. 20 Dec 1789.

Thomas married Freelove Nichols 16 Aug 1759, East Greenwich, RI. Freelove (daughter of Joseph Nichols and Freelove Matteson) was born 7 Aug 1740; died Aft Apr 1771. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 157. Anne "Nancy" Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 3 Nov 1761, East Greenwich, Kent County, RI; died 26 Feb 1827; was buried , Knightsville Meeting House Lot, Park Ave., Cranston, RI.
    2. 158. Joseph Nichols Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 4 Jan 1764, East Greenwich, RI; died 23 Jul 1845, Groton Twp., Erie County, OH.
    3. 159. Freelove Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1765; died 26 Aug 1847; was buried , Providence, RI.

  19. 59.  Ruel Remington Descendancy chart to this point (13.Daniel3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1736, Warwick, RI; died Aft 1790.

    Notes:

Ruel's parentage has never been proven, but various reliable sources have placed him in this family group. (This needs more research to confirm.)

During the Revolutionary War, Ruel served in Captain Daniel Jenkes's Company, as well as several short enlistments. He was at Warwick, able to bear arms, in the 1777 military census.

He was also a private in Col. Elliott's Regiment in 1776, pay due 26 pounds, 11 shillings, 5 pence.

The name is also spelled Reuel. It is a Bible name meaning "the shepherd" or "friend of God" or "God is his friend." (for more information see: http://www.reference-guides.com/isbe/R/REUEL/e )

Ruel married Robie Rice Abt 1754. Robie (daughter of Thomas Rice and Mary Holden) was born 27 Mar 1736, Warwick, RI; died Aft 1779. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 160. Huldah Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1756; died Aft 11 Jan 1828.
    2. 161. Anthony Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 4 Apr 1758, Warwick, RI; died Abt 11 Nov 1833, Freedom, Portage County, OH; was buried , Drakesburg Cemetery, Portage County, OH.
    3. 162. Mary "Polly" Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1761.
    4. 163. Daughter Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1764; died 1774.
    5. 164. Holden Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 17 Jun 1766, Warwick, RI; died 29 Aug 1854.
    6. 165. Rosanna Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 13 Jan 1769, Warwick, RI; died 3 Feb 1858.
    7. 166. Samuel Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1771; died Aft Oct 1805.
    8. 167. Josiah Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1773.

  20. 60.  Thomas Remington, Sr. Descendancy chart to this point (14.Joseph3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 24 Feb 1718/19, Warwick, RI; died Aft 1774.

    Notes:

Thomas and his heirs received land in Scituate from his father Joseph, 15 March 1743 (Scituate Land Evidence, Vol. 3, p. 27). This was the same land that Joseph had bought in 1731.

There is a record at Scituate dated 28 Jul 1759 of Thomas, resident of Scituate, and his family moving to Portsmouth, RI. (source Barbara Chase)

On 21 Feb 1761, Thomas Remington of Portsmouth sold land and house in Scituate to George Roberts of Warwick. (Sc. Land Ev. Bk 5 p. 319; source Barbara Chase)

He may be the Thomas Remington, son of Joseph, listed at Warwick in the 1774 RI Census. If so, this would mean that he moved from Portsmouth to Warwick.

He may also be one of the 4 Thomas Remingtons listed in the 1790 census at Warwick.

The births of five of Thomas & Mary's children are recorded at Scituate. However, they may have been born elsewhere and recorded there after the family moved to Scituate.

Thomas married Mary Collins 23 Nov 1740, Providence, RI. Mary (daughter of Eliezar Collins, Sr. and Elizabeth Unknown) was born Abt 1720; died Aft 29 Jul 1754. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 168. Margret Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 18 May 1742, RI.
    2. 169. Jonathan Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 28 Dec 1743, RI; died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI.
    3. 170. Thomas Remington, Jr.  Descendancy chart to this point was born Between 1745 and 1758; died 19 Jan 1831.
    4. 171. Prudence Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 16 Mar 1748/49, RI; died 27 Sep 1816, RI; was buried , Rev. Samuel Littlefield Lot, Warwick, RI.
    5. 172. Joseph Lippitt Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 15 Jun 1751, Scituate, RI.
    6. 173. Mary Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 23 Mar 1753, RI; died 14 Jan 1847; was buried , Joseph Bennett Lot, White Acorn Circle, Warwick, RI.
    7. 174. John Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 29 Jul 1754, RI.

  21. 61.  Joseph Remington, II Descendancy chart to this point (14.Joseph3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 21 Jan 1720/21, Warwick, RI; died 6 Jul 1800, Scituate, RI.

    Notes:

This particular Joseph Remington married Elizabeth and lived his whole life at Scituate, RI. Therefore, he is not the one who married Innocent and later moved to Tiverton, RI, as shown in many genealogies.

The following information came from a Remington descendant, Barbara Chase:

On 1 Oct 1765 Joseph Remington sold land parcel 4A in SE part of Scituate where grantees planned to erect a furnace (Stephen Hopkins, Israel Wilkinson, Caleb Arnold, Nicholas Brown, Joseph Brown, Moses Brown, Hob Hawkins). His wife Elizabeth Remington released rights to the land. (Sc Land Ev Bk 5 pp 532-533)

On 25 Jan 1771 (Cr Deed Bk 2 p 186) Joseph Remington of Scituate sold land in Cranston to Thomas Potter of Cranston; mother Margaret Remington released rights.

On 2 Sep 1790, Thomas Arnold of Providence sued Joseph Remington of Scituate; levied on homestead farm of Joseph Remington near Furnace Hope, next to land of Joseph Remington Jr. -- evidently meaning his son (Sc Land Ev Bk 8 p 425).

Date of death - Scituate, RI Probate Records; Vol. 4; p. 20 - Minutes of the Probate Court - 25 Oct 1800 - "Joseph Remington of Scituate, yeoman, departed this life on the 6th Day of July last past and died intestate" . . . Court appointed Joseph Remington Esq, s/o deceased, administrator of sd estate.

I have made an assumption that his wife was Elizabeth Collins, named as Elizabeth Remington in her father will of 1757.

Joseph married Elizabeth Collins Abt 1749. Elizabeth (daughter of Thankful Collins and Sarah Gorton) was born 26 Jan 1728/29, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died Aft 15 Mar 1815. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 175. Joseph Remington, III  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1750; died Bef 20 Feb 1813.
    2. 176. Sarah Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1752; died 11 Nov 1820; was buried , Historical Cemetery 83, Seven Mile Rd., Scituate, RI.
    3. 177. Jonathan Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1754; died Aft 1810.

  22. 62.  Martha Remington Descendancy chart to this point (14.Joseph3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 18 Mar 1724/25, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

Martha Collins is mentioned as a daughter in the 28 June 1756 will of her father.

Martha married Mr. Collins Bef 28 Jun 1756. [Group Sheet]

  23. 63.  Lippitt Remington Descendancy chart to this point (14.Joseph3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 17 Dec 1729, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

According to the dates in the Remington Family book compiled by Martha A. Benns, this family had two sets of twins. Alternatively, they may be dates of baptism rather than birth.

Lippitt was an Ensign in the 3rd Cranston Company, 1763.

From Barbara Chase, a Remington descendant: "Cranston Dd Bk 2; p. 129 - 3 Nov 1769 - Lippitt Remington of Cranston 'in consideration of my mother Margaret' a tract of land belonging to father Joseph Remington deceased; lease to her during her lifetime; with house thereon . . . Cranston Dd Bk 2; p. 129 - 3 Nov 1769 - Robert Knight Jr. of Cranston assigns forever privileges of a 'Burying place' on land purchased of Lippitt Remington 'whereon his father Joseph was buried' . . . 'sd Burying place for ever to Bury their dead.' "

Lippitt married Freelove Collins 18 Aug 1754, Scituate, RI. Freelove (daughter of Eliezar Collins, Sr. and Elizabeth Unknown) was born Abt 1732. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 178. Dorcas Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 28 Feb 1756, Cranston, RI.
    2. 179. John Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 29 Jul 1757, Scituate, RI; died 1840, MA.
    3. 180. Stephen Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 17 Sep 1758, Cranston, RI.
    4. 181. Freelove Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 22 Jun 1760.
    5. 182. Martha Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 22 Jun 1760.
    6. 183. Rhoby Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 8 Jan 1763.
    7. 184. Joseph Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 2 Nov 1764.
    8. 185. Benjamin Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 2 Nov 1764.
    9. 186. Sarah Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 28 Jul 1769, Cranston, RI.
    10. 187. Thomas Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 19 Mar 1776.

  24. 64.  Stephen Remington Descendancy chart to this point (14.Joseph3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 25 Jan 1733/34, Providence, RI; died Bef 28 Jun 1756.

  25. 65.  Margaret Remington Descendancy chart to this point (14.Joseph3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 20 Feb 1736/37, Providence, RI; died Bef 28 Jun 1756.

    Notes:

Margaret may have been the Margaret Remington who married Ebenezer Allin on 21 May 1761 (this needs more research to confirm).

If she did marry Ebenezer in 1761, then for some reason she is not mentioned in her father's will of 1758.

  26. 66.  Thomas Remington Descendancy chart to this point (15.Matthew3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 23 May 1736, Swansea, MA.

    Notes:

He may be the Thomas Remington who married Lydia Collins.

  27. 67.  Rachel Remington Descendancy chart to this point (15.Matthew3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 28 Mar 1743, Swansea, MA.

Rachel married William Allen 21 Apr 1765, Portsmouth, RI. William (son of Ebenezer Allen) was born Abt 1740. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 188. James Allen  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1766.

  28. 68.  Hepsibeth Remington Descendancy chart to this point (15.Matthew3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 24 Jul 1749, Warren, RI.

  29. 69.  Caleb Remington Descendancy chart to this point (16.Jonathan3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 2 Jul 1728, East Greenwich, RI.

  30. 70.  Jonathan Remington Descendancy chart to this point (16.Jonathan3, 2.Mary2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 20 May 1730, East Greenwich, RI; died 1805.

    Notes:

The exact identity of this Jonathan is unclear (see notes below). It is possible that he was a son of a Remington family of Prudence Island, and married an Allen girl from there. Both the Remingtons and the Allens lived on Prudence Island, Portsmouth, and had family connections and land connections.

There is a marriage record for Jonathan Remington, of Jonathan & Susannah (or Luranah?) Remington of East Greenwich, 18 Oct 1753, to Mary Thurston (RI Friends' Records). At first it was unclear to me whether this might be a first marriage for this particular Jonathan (mother's name unclear); however, Mary (Thurston) Remington died between 1777 and 1782, probably after her husband Jonathan died. See notes for Mary Thurston.

Jonathan was probably born in East Greenwich, or at least spent part of his youth there, since his birth is registered there. At some point, probably before 1741, his family moved to Massachusetts. He may have married there or in RI, but apparently at some point probably moved to Portsmouth, RI, because at least two of his children were born there; at least, their births were registered there. I am not sure when or where Jonathan and his wife died. He is very possibly the Jonathan Remington listed in the 1790 Federal Census at Hancock, MA. His son Allen lived in both MA and RI.

"A Scattered People: An American Family Moves West" by Gerald W. McFarland, p. 81 (Google Books) says that Allen Remington and his father (Jonathan) had briefly lived at Exeter, RI; Allen came to Hancock, MA, from RI after the Revolution.

Boyd Scott Remington's chart shows this Jonathan married to Prudence. However, according to an unpublished manuscript of "Family Notes" at the Knight Memorial Library in Providence, "Jonathan Remington, b.1726 Hancock, MA, married Pruda, b.1731, and had a son Allen who married Deidama; they in turn had a son Jonathan who married Diana Hall." This is clearly the same family group, but unfortunately appears to be different Jonathans, because this one was born at East Greenwich, RI, in 1730 (at least the birth was recorded there). Which is correct? (See notes for Allen's son Jonathan b.1784) See also DAR ID Number: 25799, Mrs. Sarah M. Remington Taylor; this says Jonathan was born 1726 at Hancock, MA.

BSRs chart shows the son Allen as having lived and then dying at Hancock, MA. However, James N. Arnold's "Vital Record of RI" shows Allen & Diadama Remington on the membership list of the First General Baptist Church of Richmond, RI, on 17 September 1810. Possibly Jonathan's family, and/or one or more of his children, moved to RI and then back to MA. But was Jonathan, father of Allen, born in MA or RI? This Jonathan needs more research. See notes for his father, implying that he may have moved out of state (his land was sold at public auction to pay outstanding debts).

James N. Arnold's Vital Record of RI, Richmond, lists the following Remingtons as church members in 1770: Hepsibeth, Jonathan, Lydia, Martha, Prudence, and William. This would appear to support part of this family group in BSRs chart; but who is William? At the present I am assuming he is another son, and thus adding him to the list of Jonathan's children, pending further research. However, the possibility remains that these were two different but related Remington families.

Jonathan married Prudence "Pruda" Unknown Abt 1756. Prudence was born 1731. [Group Sheet]

Could he be the Thomas Remington who appears with wife Amy in the Portsmouth, RI, town records in the mid-1700s? Possibly.

    Notes:

The births of all these children born to Thomas & Rebecca were registered at Portsmouth. I don't know for sure that they belong to this particular Thomas, but the names offer some evidence of family connection.

Thomas married Rebecca Allen 19 Mar 1748/49, Portsmouth, RI. Rebecca was born Abt 1725. [Group Sheet]

  36. 76.  Jonathan Allen Descendancy chart to this point (19.William3, 3.William2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born Abt 1722.

  37. 77.  Freelove Allen Descendancy chart to this point (19.William3, 3.William2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born 20 May 1722, Prudence Island, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI; died 17 Mar 1817, North Kingstown, RI.

    Notes:

Information concerning her surname came from "Family Notes," a group of unpublished manuscripts compiled by James N. Arnold, and located at the Knight Library in Providence. This gives her birthdate as 20 May 1722, while Maytum's notes at Newport Historical Society says 20 Jul 1722. Arnold gives her date of death as 17 Mar 1817, while Maytum gives it as 17 May 1817. Neither gives a source as documentation.

She is also mentioned as Freelove Allen, wife of William Remington, on the back of an old photo of George Wait Remington, as his great-grandmother.

Could she be a daughter of William & Freelove (Tillinghast) Allen? They had a daughter Patience who married William Maccoone on 2 April 1738. Freelove would definitely fit into this time frame for their family group. (needs more research)

She could easily be a daughter of one of the Allen families from Prudence Island, as the land evidence from Portsmouth mentions a William Remington of Prudence Island who had a wife named Freelove (Portsmouth land evidence dated 25 Dec 1764, Bk 6 p. 123 & 126).

Son Hezekiah had a grandson named Stephen Allen Remington, so the Allen name reoccurs in the family.

Freelove married William Remington 20 Sep 1752. William (son of William Remington and Mary Manton) was born 17 Jun 1729, Prudence Island, Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI; died 30 Jun 1812, North Kingstown, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

William is mentioned by name as son of John in the 10 Jan 1735/36 will of his paternal grandfather, William Allen.

William is also mentioned as a son of John in a Portsmouth deed dated 6 Jan 1738/9 (see notes for John Allen).

On 27 Apr 1757 William Allin, s/o of John Allin Esq. of Prudence Island in Portsmouth, sold land to Ebenezer Allin of Portsmouth; signed by William & Mary Allin, witnessed by Joseph Bates & William Remington. (Po Land Ev Bk 5 p 378-379)

However, this may be a different William Allen. There was a William Allen whose widow Mary moved to Warwick with her children before 9 Mar 1747. So, that William died before that date.

William married Mary Dyer 19 Feb 1737/38, North Kingstown, RI. [Group Sheet]
