Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Joseph Remington, I was born Abt 1694, Portsmouth or Warwick, RI; died 22 Sep 1763, Cranston, RI.

    Notes:

A Scituate deed records a land transaction between James Tucker and Joseph Remington, both of Warwick, dated 15 Oct 1731. Mr. Tucker sold Mr. Remington land in Scituate on the banks of the Pawtuxet River, bounded by Othniel Gorton's land. Witnesses were Ezekiel Warner and Samuel Barton, and the deed was recorded 3 Jan 1732. Interestingly, Othniel's wife was Mercy Burlingame, aunt to Margaret Burlingame, Joseph Remington's wife. (Scituate Deeds, Births, & Marriages, Vol. 1, p. 48)

Presumably the family moved from Warwick to Scituate around this time.

On 15 March 1743, Joseph Remington, of Providence, deeded to his son Thomas Remington, of Scituate, and his heirs, a parcel of land in Scituate bounded by the Seven Mile Line, westerly northwesterly and northeasterly of the Pawtuxet River, northeasterly of Edward Potter's land.

Joseph's will mentions his wife Margarett; sons Thomas, Joseph, & Lippitt; and daughter Martha Collins. If Stephen and Margaret were actually his children, they must have died before the date of his will. Daughter Margaret may have been the Margaret Remington who married Ebenezer Allin on 21 May 1761 (this needs more research to confirm).

From Barbara Chase: "Date of death -- Cranston, RI Town Council Bk 1; p. 170 'Joseph Remington of Cranston . . . yeoman who departed this Life on 22nd Day of September AD 1763 . . . ' His wife Margaret as sole executrix of his LWT was granted letters of administration . . . If you follow the land records you can easily place Joseph & Margaret Remington and most of their children in what is now the southeast corner of Scituate and the southwest corner of Cranston. They are buried there. Their lands were on both sides of Seven Mile Rd. (then portion of the original 17th century Seven Mile Line) that led to records in both towns."

Joseph married Margaret Burlingame 29 Sep 1717, Warwick, RI. Margaret (daughter of Thomas Burlingame and Martha Lippitt) was born 1696, Cranston, RI; died Aft 25 Jan 1771. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 2. Thomas Remington, Sr.  Descendancy chart to this point was born 24 Feb 1718/19, Warwick, RI; died Aft 1774.
    2. 3. Joseph Remington, II  Descendancy chart to this point was born 21 Jan 1720/21, Warwick, RI; died 6 Jul 1800, Scituate, RI.
    3. 4. Martha Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 18 Mar 1724/25, Warwick, RI.
    4. 5. Lippitt Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 17 Dec 1729, Warwick, RI.
    5. 6. Stephen Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 25 Jan 1733/34, Providence, RI; died Bef 28 Jun 1756.
    6. 7. Margaret Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 20 Feb 1736/37, Providence, RI; died Bef 28 Jun 1756.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Thomas Remington, Sr. Descendancy chart to this point (1.Joseph1) was born 24 Feb 1718/19, Warwick, RI; died Aft 1774.

    Notes:

Thomas and his heirs received land in Scituate from his father Joseph, 15 March 1743 (Scituate Land Evidence, Vol. 3, p. 27). This was the same land that Joseph had bought in 1731.

There is a record at Scituate dated 28 Jul 1759 of Thomas, resident of Scituate, and his family moving to Portsmouth, RI. (source Barbara Chase)

On 21 Feb 1761, Thomas Remington of Portsmouth sold land and house in Scituate to George Roberts of Warwick. (Sc. Land Ev. Bk 5 p. 319; source Barbara Chase)

He may be the Thomas Remington, son of Joseph, listed at Warwick in the 1774 RI Census. If so, this would mean that he moved from Portsmouth to Warwick.

He may also be one of the 4 Thomas Remingtons listed in the 1790 census at Warwick.

The births of five of Thomas & Mary's children are recorded at Scituate. However, they may have been born elsewhere and recorded there after the family moved to Scituate.

Thomas married Mary Collins 23 Nov 1740, Providence, RI. Mary (daughter of Eliezar Collins, Sr. and Elizabeth Unknown) was born Abt 1720; died Aft 29 Jul 1754. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 8. Margret Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 18 May 1742, RI.
    2. 9. Jonathan Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 28 Dec 1743, RI; died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI.
    3. 10. Thomas Remington, Jr.  Descendancy chart to this point was born Between 1745 and 1758; died 19 Jan 1831.
    4. 11. Prudence Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 16 Mar 1748/49, RI; died 27 Sep 1816, RI; was buried , Rev. Samuel Littlefield Lot, Warwick, RI.
    5. 12. Joseph Lippitt Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 15 Jun 1751, Scituate, RI.
    6. 13. Mary Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 23 Mar 1753, RI; died 14 Jan 1847; was buried , Joseph Bennett Lot, White Acorn Circle, Warwick, RI.
    7. 14. John Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 29 Jul 1754, RI.

  2. 3.  Joseph Remington, II Descendancy chart to this point (1.Joseph1) was born 21 Jan 1720/21, Warwick, RI; died 6 Jul 1800, Scituate, RI.

    Notes:

This particular Joseph Remington married Elizabeth and lived his whole life at Scituate, RI. Therefore, he is not the one who married Innocent and later moved to Tiverton, RI, as shown in many genealogies.

The following information came from a Remington descendant, Barbara Chase:

On 1 Oct 1765 Joseph Remington sold land parcel 4A in SE part of Scituate where grantees planned to erect a furnace (Stephen Hopkins, Israel Wilkinson, Caleb Arnold, Nicholas Brown, Joseph Brown, Moses Brown, Hob Hawkins). His wife Elizabeth Remington released rights to the land. (Sc Land Ev Bk 5 pp 532-533)

On 25 Jan 1771 (Cr Deed Bk 2 p 186) Joseph Remington of Scituate sold land in Cranston to Thomas Potter of Cranston; mother Margaret Remington released rights.

On 2 Sep 1790, Thomas Arnold of Providence sued Joseph Remington of Scituate; levied on homestead farm of Joseph Remington near Furnace Hope, next to land of Joseph Remington Jr. -- evidently meaning his son (Sc Land Ev Bk 8 p 425).

Date of death - Scituate, RI Probate Records; Vol. 4; p. 20 - Minutes of the Probate Court - 25 Oct 1800 - "Joseph Remington of Scituate, yeoman, departed this life on the 6th Day of July last past and died intestate" . . . Court appointed Joseph Remington Esq, s/o deceased, administrator of sd estate.

I have made an assumption that his wife was Elizabeth Collins, named as Elizabeth Remington in her father will of 1757.

Joseph married Elizabeth Collins Abt 1749. Elizabeth (daughter of Thankful Collins and Sarah Gorton) was born 26 Jan 1728/29, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died Aft 15 Mar 1815. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 15. Joseph Remington, III  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1750; died Bef 20 Feb 1813.
    2. 16. Sarah Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1752; died 11 Nov 1820; was buried , Historical Cemetery 83, Seven Mile Rd., Scituate, RI.
    3. 17. Jonathan Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1754; died Aft 1810.

  3. 4.  Martha Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Joseph1) was born 18 Mar 1724/25, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

Martha Collins is mentioned as a daughter in the 28 June 1756 will of her father.

Martha married Mr. Collins Bef 28 Jun 1756. [Group Sheet]

  4. 5.  Lippitt Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Joseph1) was born 17 Dec 1729, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

According to the dates in the Remington Family book compiled by Martha A. Benns, this family had two sets of twins. Alternatively, they may be dates of baptism rather than birth.

Lippitt was an Ensign in the 3rd Cranston Company, 1763.

From Barbara Chase, a Remington descendant: "Cranston Dd Bk 2; p. 129 - 3 Nov 1769 - Lippitt Remington of Cranston 'in consideration of my mother Margaret' a tract of land belonging to father Joseph Remington deceased; lease to her during her lifetime; with house thereon . . . Cranston Dd Bk 2; p. 129 - 3 Nov 1769 - Robert Knight Jr. of Cranston assigns forever privileges of a 'Burying place' on land purchased of Lippitt Remington 'whereon his father Joseph was buried' . . . 'sd Burying place for ever to Bury their dead.' "

Lippitt married Freelove Collins 18 Aug 1754, Scituate, RI. Freelove (daughter of Eliezar Collins, Sr. and Elizabeth Unknown) was born Abt 1732. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 18. Dorcas Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 28 Feb 1756, Cranston, RI.
    2. 19. John Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 29 Jul 1757, Scituate, RI; died 1840, MA.
    3. 20. Stephen Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 17 Sep 1758, Cranston, RI.
    4. 21. Freelove Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 22 Jun 1760.
    5. 22. Martha Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 22 Jun 1760.
    6. 23. Rhoby Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 8 Jan 1763.
    7. 24. Joseph Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 2 Nov 1764.
    8. 25. Benjamin Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 2 Nov 1764.
    9. 26. Sarah Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 28 Jul 1769, Cranston, RI.
    10. 27. Thomas Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 19 Mar 1776.

  5. 6.  Stephen Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Joseph1) was born 25 Jan 1733/34, Providence, RI; died Bef 28 Jun 1756.

  6. 7.  Margaret Remington Descendancy chart to this point (1.Joseph1) was born 20 Feb 1736/37, Providence, RI; died Bef 28 Jun 1756.

    Notes:

Margaret may have been the Margaret Remington who married Ebenezer Allin on 21 May 1761 (this needs more research to confirm).

If she did marry Ebenezer in 1761, then for some reason she is not mentioned in her father's will of 1758.

Generation: 3

  1. 8.  Margret Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born 18 May 1742, RI.

    Notes:

She is mentioned as granddaughter Margaret Allen in the will of Elizur Collins of Scituate, dated 31 Oct 1778.

Margret married Ebenezer Allen 21 May 1761, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. Ebenezer was born Abt 1740. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Jonathan Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born 28 Dec 1743, RI; died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI.

    Notes:

Scituate Land Evidence Vol. 8 p. 39 records a transaction in which Jonathan Remington received a deed on 11 April 1785 from Christopher and Wait Lippitt. Probably it refers to this Jonathan. Since his great-grandmother was Martha Lippitt, probably Christopher was a relative.

The following may pertain to this Jonathan:

In the 1800 Federal Census, he is listed at Scituate as Jonathan Remmington (same page as Joseph Remington), with a household as follows: 1 FWM 45+, 2 FWF <10, 1 FWF 10-15, 1 FWF 26-44, and 1 FWF 45+.

In 1810 he is listed at Scituate as Johnathan Remington, but the household consists of just an adult male and an adult female.

On 20 March 1776, Elisha & Desire Clark of North Kingstown purchased land in Exeter from Jonathan Remington of Warwick, yeoman. Was it this Jonathan? If so, he would have been about 33. But see other Jonathan Remingtons on this tree.

Boyd Scott Remington shows two marriages for him, so I am entering them, although no sources are noted (needs further research).

Jonathan — Lucy Unknown. [Group Sheet]

Jonathan married Mary Havens 15 Jun 1769, Warwick, RI. Mary (daughter of Nathaniel Havens) was born Abt 1747, RI; died Aft 6 Aug 1810, Scituate, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 28. Lucy Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1770; died 7 May 1838; was buried , David Colvin Cemetery, Glenview Ct., Scituate, RI.
    2. 29. Alta Mary Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 1772, Scituate, RI.
    3. 30. Peleg Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1775; died 16 Dec 1847; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI.
    4. 31. Russell Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 12 Jul 1776; died 26 Jul 1817; was buried , Historical Cemetery 540 "lost, " Remington Lot, Hope Ave., Scituate, RI.

  3. 10.  Thomas Remington, Jr. Descendancy chart to this point (2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born Between 1745 and 1758; died 19 Jan 1831.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give source credit to Lois Sorensen, Remington family researcher and compiler, and to other sources as noted herein.)

I have tentatively determined this Thomas Remington's parentage from his Revolutionary War pension file, in which his sister Mary Bennett gives a sworn testimony. I have made an assumption that his sister Mary Bennett, is the same Mary as the daughter of Thomas & Mary (Collins) Remington.

It is possible that Mary (Remington) Bennett and her brother Thomas, Jr., were children of a different Thomas Remington; however, given their ages and locality, this family is the most likely. No other Thomas Remington of record has proved to be a possibility, although there were other Thomas Remingtons born in Rhode Island of whom nothing else is known.

According to his pension file data at the National Archives in Waltham (George Sermuksnis, Archives Technician), Thomas was residing at Providence when he received his pension. He lived in Warwick during the the Revolutionary War.

Please note that some online genealogies have shown Mary Wood as a second wife for the Thomas Remington, Jr., who is the son of Thomas & Abigail (Eldred) Remington, of Cowesett, Warwick, RI. However, that is incorrect, as that Thomas has a different date of death: 6 Aug 1817. His grave is in Coventry, RI. Also, there is no William or Charles among their known children.

From "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files," Vol. III: N - Z, abstracted by Virgil D. White, The National Historical Publishing Co., Waynesboro, TN, 1992, p. 2849, summary of his pension file:

"REMINGTON Thomas, Mary, RI Line, W13847, sol was a son of Thomas Remington & he m Mary daughter or [sic] William Wood on 7 Jun 1778 at Warwick RI, sol d 19 Jan 1831, wid appl 29 Octg [sic] 1836 at Cranston RI & she d there 29 Mar 1837 & the bal due wid at her death was paid to the following children; Charles, Daniel & William Remington her only surviving children."

Although Thomas was a Revolutionary War Veteran and his wife Mary received his pension, it is not known where either of them is buried.

The Federal Census of 1790 lists 4 Thomas Remingtons in Warwick. I am assuming that one of these is this particular Thomas, likely the one designated as Thomas Remington, Jr. and living near another Thomas Remington. The household shows 5 free white males under age 16, 1 free white male 16 and over, and 3 free white females. This suggests that there may have been 5 sons and 2 daughters in the family at that time.

"Cousin Thomas Remington Jr. of Coventry" is named as executor in the 1805 will of Thomas Collins of Foster, yeoman, who died about Mar 1818 when the will was proved.

There may have been a son named Henry. The 1810 census shows a Charles Remington and a Henry Remington listed next to each other. Both Charles and William included the name Henry among their children.

The inventory of the estate of Thomas Remington was taken between June and August 1831. Charles Remington was the Administrator, appraisers were Christopher Spencer, Edmund Burke, and George Carder. The image of the inventory, totalling $91.11, is viewable at ancestry.com. Two of the individuals listed as having claims are William and Joseph Remington.

Thomas married Mary Wood 7 Jun 1778, Warwick, RI. Mary (daughter of William Wood) was born Abt 1758; died 29 Mar 1837, Cranston, Providence Co., RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 32. Charles Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1778, RI; died 14 Mar 1857, Providence, RI; was buried , John Stafford Lot, Pontiac Ave., Cranston, RI.
    2. 33. William Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1779, RI; died 23 Jun 1852, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Lakewood Burial Ground, Warwick, RI.
    3. 34. Joseph Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 27 Oct 1785, Warwick, RI; died Abt 1835.
    4. 35. Daniel Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1788, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1850.
    5. 36. Thomas Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1792; died 25 Nov 1835; was buried , Historic Cemetery WK114, Tollgate Rd., Warwick, RI.

  4. 11.  Prudence Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born 16 Mar 1748/49, RI; died 27 Sep 1816, RI; was buried , Rev. Samuel Littlefield Lot, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

She may be the Prudence Remington who married Pearce Budlong at Warwick on 27 Aug 1769. I have made this assumption in placing this marriage here on this family tree.

Prudence — Samuel Littlefield. Samuel was born 28 Sep 1747; died 22 Oct 1830; was buried , Rev. Samuel Littlefield Lot, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

Prudence married Pearce Budlong 27 Aug 1769, Warwick, RI. Pearce (son of John Budlong) was born Abt. 1745; died 20 Oct 1769; was buried , John Budlong Lot, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

  5. 12.  Joseph Lippitt Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born 15 Jun 1751, Scituate, RI.

  6. 13.  Mary Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born Abt 23 Mar 1753, RI; died 14 Jan 1847; was buried , Joseph Bennett Lot, White Acorn Circle, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

The marriage record identifies her as d/o Thomas Remington. I have made an assumption that the Mary Remington, daughter of Thomas, who married Joseph Bennett is the same Mary who is a daughter of Thomas & Mary (Collins) Remington (this needs more research to confirm).

On 15 Sep 1837, Mary Bennett, at age 84, gave a sworn statement concerning her brother Thomas's Revolutionary War service. I am making an assumption that they are both children of Thomas Remington & Mary Collins, since this couple had a daughter Mary born 20 Mar 1753, and this agrees closely with the date of birth calculated from the gravestone of Mary Bennett.

    BENNETT, MARY [REMINGTON] 1754c - 14 JAN 1847 WK016 (RI Cemetery Database)

The gravestone says she died on 14 Jan 1847 at the age of 93 y 10 m 4 d. This would compute to a dob of 10 Mar 1753.

The online transcript has her dob as 20 Mar 1853.

It is possible that Mary (Remington) Bennett and her brother Thomas, Jr., were children of a different Thomas Remington; however, given their ages and locality, this family is the most likely.

Some genealogies have another Mary Remington, d/o Thomas Remington and Abigail Eldred(ge), as the one who married Joseph Bennett; sometimes two marriages are given for Mary. However, this is not possible, since the other Mary married Josephus Rice and is mentioned as Mary Rice in the will of her father thomas Remington dated 11 June 1798. Joseph Bennett and his wife Mary (Remington) had a child in July 1798, whose birth is recorded in the VRs, so they cannot be the same Mary.

Mary married Joseph Bennett 9 Dec 1773, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. Joseph (son of John Bennett) was born Abt 1744; died 5 Jun 1835; was buried , Joseph Bennett Lot, White Acorn Circle, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 37. Thomas Bennett  Descendancy chart to this point was born 28 May 1775, Warwick, RI.
    2. 38. Joseph Bennett  Descendancy chart to this point was born 8 Mar 1777, Warwick, RI.
    3. 39. John Bennett  Descendancy chart to this point was born 27 Feb 1779, Warwick, RI.
    4. 40. Asa Bennett  Descendancy chart to this point was born 2 Feb 1781, Warwick, RI.
    5. 41. Tabitha Bennett  Descendancy chart to this point was born 15 Nov 1783, Warwick, RI.
    6. 42. Mary Bennett  Descendancy chart to this point was born 19 Aug 1786, Warwick, RI.
    7. 43. Elizabeth Bennett  Descendancy chart to this point was born 4 Feb 1789, Warwick, RI.
    8. 44. Russell Bennett  Descendancy chart to this point was born 24 Nov 1793, Warwick, RI.
    9. 45. Almy Bennett  Descendancy chart to this point was born 3 Jul 1798, Warwick, RI.

  7. 14.  John Remington Descendancy chart to this point (2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born 29 Jul 1754, RI.

    Notes:

Boyd Scott Remington includes this son in the family group, although he does not appear in the Scituate Town Hall records that I checked. BSR includes no source documentation. It may be that BSR erroneously placed here the the John Remington born 29 July 1757, but slightly altered the birth year.

However, he is listed as a son in this family group, in the Burlingame Manuscript Book I, p. 50 (at RI Historical Society Library).

  8. 15.  Joseph Remington, III Descendancy chart to this point (3.Joseph2, 1.Joseph1) was born Abt 1750; died Bef 20 Feb 1813.

    Notes:

He is referred to as Joseph Remington, Jr., in some of the Scituate town records.

I have estimated the birth years of several of Joseph's children. His will mentions his wife, Ann, and the following children: Daniel, Robert (under 21), Mary, Ruth, Sophia, Susanna, & Betsey (last three under 18). Executors were sons James & Jeremiah.

Many genealogies show Joseph Lippitt Remington as husband of Alice and father of these children. However, information provided by Barbara Chase has shown this to be erroneous. A deed found in Scituate Land Evidence Bk 11 p 473, dated 20 Feb 1813, mentions Elizabeth Remington, widow of Joseph Sr.; Alice Remington widow of Joseph Jr.; and James Remington of Scituate and his wife Isabel. This transaction involved the sale of land to Ebenezer, Stephen, & Abraham Burlingame.

He is very possibly the Joseph Remington mentioned in the following list:

An Historical Sketch of The Town of Scituate, R.I.; Part 4: "Scituate was not invaded, but she was called upon, and responded nobly to the call, to march her troops to the port. The British, on Sunday, Dec. 8, 1776, landed and took possession of Rhode Island, and remained there until Oct. 25, 1779, during which time the inhabitants were greatly oppressed. In a list of Capt. Knight's company, April 2, 1775, the day after the Lexington battle, are found the following names: Joseph Knight, captain; Samuel Wilbor, Benjamin Wood, Isaac Horton, John Hill, Nathan Walker, James Parker, John Bennet, jr., Jeremiah Almy, Joseph Remington, Nathan Ralfe, John I. Kilton, Jonathan Knight, jr., Joseph Briggs, David Knight, Joseph Collins, William Taylor John Manchester, Edward Bennett, Thomas Parker, John Edwards, jr., Simeon Wilbor, Isaiah Austin, Samuel Eldridge, Christopher Knight, Samuel Hopkins, Benajah Bosworth, Obadiah Rolfe, Ezekiel Wood, Caleb Fisk, doctor, Jolin Phillips, Constant Graves, Stukely Thornton, James Andrews, jr., Christopher Collins, Joseph Bennet, Thomas Knight, Peleg Colvin, Eleazor Westcott, Caleb Steere, Collins Roberts, Daniel Fisk, William Knight, Nathan Franklin, Uriah Franklin, jr., Ephriam Edwards, Stephen Edwards, Francis Fuller, jr., Benjamin Whitmore, William Stafford, Daniel Angell, Furmer Tanner -- fifty-two in all."

Joseph married Alcey or Ann Unknown Abt 1777. Alcey was born Abt 1755; died Aft 15 Mar 1815. [Group Sheet]

    Children:

    Notes:

Some information on Sarah and her daughter Sarah came from Remington descendant Barbara Chase.

Sarah died in her 68th year.

A Sarah Remington of Cranston, singlewoman, filed a will dated 9 Jan 1803, proved 25 Nov 1820. In it she mentions her father Joseph Remington, deceased, and her brother Joseph Remington. Her two daughters were Elizabeth & Sarah Remington.

Boyd Scott Remington's chart shows this Sarah's death as 11 Nov 1820, Cranston, RI, but he includes the above data in the family group of Joseph & Innocent Remington, my ancestors. Information from Barbara Chase has shown otherwise.

Additional evidence is the RI Cemetery Database, which shows Sarah Remington c.1752 - 11 Nov 1820, buried in Scituate #83.

    Children:
    1. 56. Elizabeth Remington  Descendancy chart to this point died Aft 8 Jun 1844.
    2. 57. Sarah Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 8 Mar 1789; died 18 Sep 1882; was buried , Fall River, MA.

  10. 17.  Jonathan Remington Descendancy chart to this point (3.Joseph2, 1.Joseph1) was born Abt 1754; died Aft 1810.

    Notes:

Jonathan's name as a son in this family was suggested by Barbara Chase, since land evidence and census records show that a Jonathan Remington was living in Scituate near Joseph Remington. However, those references may be for the Jonathan who married Mary Havens; he was a son of Thomas Remington of Scituate. Thomas was older brother to Joseph.

  11. 18.  Dorcas Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Lippitt2, 1.Joseph1) was born 28 Feb 1756, Cranston, RI.

  12. 19.  John Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Lippitt2, 1.Joseph1) was born 29 Jul 1757, Scituate, RI; died 1840, MA.

    Notes:

This is the record from James N. Arnold's VRs: REMINGTON John, July 29, 1754. It is out of date order among the children. I have not seen the original at Cranston, but maybe it is 1774, which would be the correct order.

BSR's ancestry chart has the incorrect birth date for this John, with no marriage noted. He says that John was at Argyle, NY, in 1790 and at Litchfield, NY, in 1800. That may be correct. The 1790 census shows a John and a Stephen Remington at Argyle.

I don't remember my source for this marriage to Mary Green -- probably the DAR Patriot Index (needs more research). However, the death date of 1840 may be incorrect for this John Remington, since the other one (b. 1756, s/o Thomas & Abigail of Warwick) died in 1840. Someone may have confused the two John Remingtons, both born in RI around the same year.

John — Mary Greene. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 58. Stephen Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1780, Herkimer or Washington County, NY; died 9 Jul 1849, Pittsburgh, PA; was buried , Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh PA.

  13. 20.  Stephen Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Lippitt2, 1.Joseph1) was born 17 Sep 1758, Cranston, RI.

    Notes:

BSR's ancestry chart says that Stephen was at Argyle, NY, in 1790 and at Litchfield, NY, in 1800.

  14. 21.  Freelove Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Lippitt2, 1.Joseph1) was born 22 Jun 1760.

    Notes:

Boyd Scott Remington has this Freelove married to David Atwood. However, there may have been another Freelove, born to Thomas & Freelove (Nichols) Remington, in 1765. I have placed David Atwood with that individual, primarily because of the dates in the RI Cemetery Database. See marriage notes for the other Freelove Remington in this family tree.

  15. 22.  Martha Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Lippitt2, 1.Joseph1) was born 22 Jun 1760.

  16. 23.  Rhoby Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Lippitt2, 1.Joseph1) was born 8 Jan 1763.

  17. 24.  Joseph Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Lippitt2, 1.Joseph1) was born 2 Nov 1764.

  18. 25.  Benjamin Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Lippitt2, 1.Joseph1) was born 2 Nov 1764.

    Notes:

BSR says Benjamin was at Argyle, NY in 1800.

  19. 26.  Sarah Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Lippitt2, 1.Joseph1) was born 28 Jul 1769, Cranston, RI.

  20. 27.  Thomas Remington Descendancy chart to this point (5.Lippitt2, 1.Joseph1) was born 19 Mar 1776.

Generation: 4

  1. 28.  Lucy Remington Descendancy chart to this point (9.Jonathan3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born Abt 1770; died 7 May 1838; was buried , David Colvin Cemetery, Glenview Ct., Scituate, RI.

    Notes:

Lucy may have had a daughter named Phebe before she was married. However, I have placed Phebe in the family of Lucy's brother Russell and his first wife, also named Lucy. (see notes for Phebe)

An online family tree shows two more sons for Lucy & David: Obediah & David, Jr. (needs more research to confirm). In the 1850 census Obadiah & Jabez are living in the same household.

Lucy married David Colvin Aft 19 Mar 1808. David (son of Josiah Colvin and Freelove Ralph) was born 16 Jul 1762; died 28 Jul 1832; was buried , David Colvin Cemetery, Glenview Ct., Scituate, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 59. Lucinda Colvin  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1812; died 15 Dec 1826; was buried , David Colvin Cemetery, Glenview Ct., Scituate, RI.
    2. 60. Obadiah Colvin  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1813.
    3. 61. Jabez R. Colvin  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1815; died 24 Aug 1878, Coventry, RI.

  2. 29.  Alta Mary Remington Descendancy chart to this point (9.Jonathan3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born 1772, Scituate, RI.

    Notes:

I am not sure about this daughter for Jonathan & Mary. She is listed on the Boyd Scott Remington chart. According to the genealogy, she married Christopher Ralph Colvin. However, he was born 1808 and married Abigail "Nabby" (Remington) Knight -- probably she was his second wife, as suggested by the wording in his will.

  3. 30.  Peleg Remington Descendancy chart to this point (9.Jonathan3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born Abt 1775; died 16 Dec 1847; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

Please note that I am not sure that Peleg belongs to these parents. I am including him here based on certain evidence including census, location, and age. See notes for Susan Briggs.

In the 1820 Federal Census, Peleg is listed at Warwick: 2 FWM <10, 1 FWM >45, 1 FWF <10, 3 FWF 10-15, 1 FWF 26-44. This suggests that Peleg and Susan had 4 daughters and 2 sons.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Susan Remington is living at Warwick, listed next to -- or possibly with -- Thomas & Almira Remington. This suggests a family relationship. Thomas was s/o Russell Remington.

I have made a working assumption that Susan Remington is Thomas's aunt by marriage to his uncle Peleg.

There may be another son of Peleg and Susan in this family: William H. Remington who married Sarah F. Hazard at Warwick 25 July 1849. (needs more research to confirm -- yes, this has been confirmed)

Peleg's will was dated Nov 1847, proved 14 Feb 1848 at Warwick. It mentions wife Susan and daughter Phebe Ann Arnold.

DAR records show Susan Briggs as Peleg's second wife. I don't know that this is accurate. The DAR file shows "Nancy" as his first wife. I believe there was an earlier Peleg Remington who had a wife named Nancy/Anstice. The two could have been confused by researchers, but then again there could have been two Pelegs with wives named Nancy. However, another thought is that this Peleg's first wife could have been Lydia Rhodes, Phebe Field, or Amy Fifield. I have four possible wives for Peleg Remington II, but that could certainly be incorrect. See notes for Peleg Remington II b 1764.

DAR records show this Peleg as b c1757/58, but the RI Cemetery Database has c1775.

Peleg married Susan Briggs 5 Feb 1807, Warwick, RI. Susan was born Abt 1778; died 15 Mar 1861; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 62. Abby Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 12 Feb 1809, Warwick, RI; died 26 Jul 1860, Manville, Lincoln, RI; was buried , Oak Hill Cemetery, Woonsocket, RI.
    2. 63. Susan B. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 11 Feb 1811; died 1878; was buried , North Burial Ground, Providence, RI.
    3. 64. Ruth Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1813; died 3 Oct 1876, Providence, RI.
    4. 65. Phebe Ann Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1815.
    5. 66. Lorenzo Dow Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1821; died 1898; was buried , Greenwood Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Coventry, RI.
    6. 67. William E. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt. 1823, RI; died Aft 1 June 1860.

  4. 31.  Russell Remington Descendancy chart to this point (9.Jonathan3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born 12 Jul 1776; died 26 Jul 1817; was buried , Historical Cemetery 540 "lost, " Remington Lot, Hope Ave., Scituate, RI.

    Notes:

Russell & Rachel lived in Cranston.

Cranston Probate Bk. 2, p. 315: whereas Russell Remington late of Cranston, deceased, died Intestate, the court appoints Mrs. Rachel Remington, widow of Deceased, administratrix; dated 9 August 1817.

At least one person has Abby (Remington) Vose as a daughter of this couple; she was born c 12 Feb 1809. This needs more research to confirm.

Russell married Lucy Unknown Abt 1793. Lucy was born Abt 1776; died Bef 1811. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 68. Phebe Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 19 Jan 1794, RI; died 7 Aug 1872, RI.

Russell married Rachael Colvin Abt 1810. Rachael (daughter of Benedict Colvin and Hannah Benedict) was born 22 May 1769, Coventry, RI; died 1 Dec 1837; was buried , Colvin Cemetery, Colvintown Rd., Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:

    2. 71. Hannah Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1812, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1850.

  5. 32.  Charles Remington Descendancy chart to this point (10.Thomas3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born Abt 1778, RI; died 14 Mar 1857, Providence, RI; was buried , John Stafford Lot, Pontiac Ave., Cranston, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give source credit to Lois Sorensen, Remington family researcher and compiler, and to other sources as noted herein.)

It is possible that he had a first wife named Alice, with whom he lived in NY State. See notes for Stacy Waterman Remington on this family tree.

He is probably the Charles Remington listed in the 1820 Federal Census at Warwick, RI. In addition to Charles & Betsey, who are both 26 - 45, the household includes one male 10 - 15, two males under 10, two females 10 - 15, and two females under 10. If these are all his children, there are three sons and four daughters.

There is some discrepancy about the dates of birth and death for Charles. "Providence, RI Deaths 1851 - 1879" Vol. 3, p. 488, has the following information: Remington, Charles, s. of Thomas, 87 yrs., Mar 14 1857 (10:9). This would place his birth year as c1770. It also provides the key information that his father was a Thomas Remington -- one of the many. The RI Death Index identifies his parents as Thomas & Mary. On the same page in the book "Providence, RI Deaths" is the following entry: Elizabeth, wid. of Charles, 81 yrs., Mar 28 1866 (11:199). This Charles & this Elizabeth are husband and wife, as demonstrated by the following cemetery and census data.

The RI Cemetery Database has this information, differing slightly from the above: Charles Remington, 25 Oct 1776 - 13 Mar 1856; and Betsey (Stafford) Remington, c1785 - 28 Mar 1866.

    REMINGTON, CHARLES 1776 - 13 MAR 1856 CR026
    REMINGTON, BETSEY (STAFFORD) 1785c - 28 MAR 1866 CR026

Charles's death is also recorded at Cranston, RI, as 14 March 1857 (Bk 3, p12).

Their graves are both in the John Stafford Lot on Pontiac Ave., Cranston. Clearly these are the same individuals listed in the book "Providence, RI Deaths." However, notice that the year of Charles's birth, and the date of death, are different.

In the Federal Census of 1850, Charles is 74, a farmer, and Betsey is 67. They are at Cranston, RI.

On 15 March 1857, Benjamin W. Remington, along with William & Betsey S. Randall, petitioned the Cranston Probate Court, "holden at the Inn of Lyman Barney," concerning Charles & Betsey Remington, Benjamin's parents. I am guessing that Betsey was very likely his sister -- perhaps born Betsey Stafford Remington (needs more research to confirm). Benjamin, William, & Betsey "respectfully represent that Charles Remington and Betsey Remington, wife of said Charles, are incompetent to manage their estates and affairs, and your petitioners are afraid they will squander their property and render themselves chargeable, and [request] that your Honorable body will appoint some suitable person guardian."

I suspect Charles may be a son of Thomas Remington, Jr. and Mary Wood, who were married 7 June 1778 at Warwick, RI. The RI Death Index identifies his parents as Thomas & Mary, which agrees with my theory (although both of these are common names). If so, he may have been born in 1778 or after; or, he may be a son of a previous marriage for this Thomas. In the 1850 Federal Census at Cranston, RI, Charles is 74 and Betsey is 67. This would place his year of birth as c1776, which agrees with the cemetery data. But perhaps he didn't know exactly what year he was born, or didn't keep exact count over the years, as so often happens with records through the decades. If his birth date was calculated based on his age at death, it may not be correct.

Although I have found no birth records for them, there are several reasons why I have placed Charles and William in this family group. First of all, according to the death record at Warwick City Hall, and the RI Death Index, William was a son of Thomas (no mother is mentioned); Charles is known to be son of a Thomas & Mary. Secondly, they were born around the same time, and lived in the same area (Warwick/Cranston/Pawtuxet Village). Thirdly, Charles & Betsey had a son named Benjamin W. Remington, who had sons named Albert F. and William H. Benjamin's son Albert F. is found living at Thomas, GA, in the 1860 Federal Census, in the household of Charles H. & Ellen Remington and family. Also in Thomas, GA, at that time are Edward Remington and his extended family. Edward is a son of William, of Thomas. In 1875, the wife (or widow) of Charles H. Remington, Ellen, is living at Providence, RI, next to/with Albert F. and William H., the sons of Benjamin W. There is clearly a close family relationship here. The most reasonable explanation is that Charles & William were brothers, and that the Remington individuals living together in Thomas, GA, and in Providence, RI, were cousins. Additional evidence is the repetition of the same names in both families.

I have also wondered if this Charles Remington may have married first to Alice, and had a son named Stacy Waterman Remington b 21 Oct 1809 (see notes elsewhere on this tree for that family). One similarity is the middle name Warren among the children/grandchildren.

If any new information comes to light, it will be added to this family tree.

Charles married Elizabeth "Betsey" Stafford Abt 1811. Elizabeth (daughter of John Stafford and Mary Arnold) was born Between 1782 and 1785; died 28 Mar 1866; was buried , John Stafford Lot, Pontiac Ave., Cranston, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 72. Mary A. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Oct 1812, Warwick, RI; died 18 Jun 1901, Providence, RI.
    2. 73. Elizabeth Betsey S. Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 1814; died 25 Dec 1851; was buried , King-Randall Lot, Cranston, RI.
    3. 74. Benjamin Warren Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 15 Jul 1817, RI; died 24 Jul 1884, Seekonk, MA; was buried , Locust Grove Cemetery, Providence, RI.
    4. 75. Charles Henry Remington, Sr.  Descendancy chart to this point was born Between 1820 and 1822, RI; died 23 Nov 1861.

  6. 33.  William Remington Descendancy chart to this point (10.Thomas3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born Abt 1779, RI; died 23 Jun 1852, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Lakewood Burial Ground, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give source credit to Lois Sorensen, Remington family researcher and compiler, and to other sources as noted herein.)

William's will dated 31 May 1852 mentions his (second) wife Avis and sons Henry A., Edward, & William H.

The death record at Warwick City Hall reads: "William Remington, son of Thomas; trader, d. 23 June 1852 age 73." (Note: James N. Arnold's published transcription of this record is incorrect; I have viewed the original twice for verification) The RI Death Index agrees with the original.

I do not have absolute proof of the identity of William's parents, but the available evidence points to this Thomas and Mary. It is known that his father is Thomas. The most likely possibility is Thomas Remington, Jr., who married Mary Wood, d/o William, at Warwick on 7 June 1778, by Elder Charles Holden. (Consequently, I am tentatively placing him in this family; research is ongoing to confirm.)

William is mentioned as a son in Thomas Remington's Revolutionary War Pension File # W13847.

Research throughout Rhode Island has shown that there is no record of any other William, son of Thomas.

William owned a house which is now known as the Remington House, at 71 Remington Street in Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI. This house was at one time rented to the Pawtuxet school district for use as a school. An old receipt shows that William was paid $3 per month, for a total of $12, covering the period from 9 Dec 1833 to 8 Apr 1834. Most likely, ownership of the house was passed down to son Henry after William's death, since Henry is indicated as owner on an 1855 map. (source: "Pawtuxet Schools" by Henry A. L. Brown, an article in "The Bridge" Fall 2005 Vol. 31 No. 2, p. 10 -- A Newsletter of the Pawtuxet Village Association)

The plaque on the front of the William Remington house has the date 1728. Does this mean the house was built that year? Also, who built the house -- a Remington ancestor or someone else? This needs more research. (I have photographed this house; image available upon request.)

  7. 34.  Joseph Remington Descendancy chart to this point (10.Thomas3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born 27 Oct 1785, Warwick, RI; died Abt 1835.

    Notes:

I don't know for sure if this Joseph belongs in this family group, but the birth record identifies him as Joseph Remington, of Thomas. I have checked the family groups of the other families in Warwick, as well as the 1790 census for each of them, and Joseph fits best here.

An inventory of the estate of Joseph Remington of Warwick is listed in the probate records, viewable at ancestry.com, 13 Apr 1835; Thomas Holden, his guardian.

  8. 35.  Daniel Remington Descendancy chart to this point (10.Thomas3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born Abt 1788, RI; died Aft 1 Jun 1850.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give source credit to Lois Sorensen, Remington family researcher and compiler, and to other sources as noted herein.)

Daniel was "of Warwick." However, I don't see him listed in the 1820 census in RI. Could they have moved away and then back to RI before son Ben was born?

He may be the Daniel Remington, age 62, RI, laborer, living at Providence, RI, in the 1850 Federal Census. Daniel is living with Maria Waterman and three Allen family members.

I can't find any gravestone records for Daniel or Alice, or any death records. Perhaps Daniel died between 1850 and 1853, when the RI Death Index began.

Daniel married Alice Stephens 21 Sep 1806, Warwick, RI. Alice was born Abt 1788; died Aft 1822. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 79. Benjamin Nelson Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born 12 Apr 1825, RI; died 17 Jun 1898, RI; was buried , Locust Grove Cemetery, Elmwood Ave., Providence, RI.

  9. 36.  Thomas Remington Descendancy chart to this point (10.Thomas3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born Abt 1792; died 25 Nov 1835; was buried , Historic Cemetery WK114, Tollgate Rd., Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1830, Thomas Remington is listed as living in Warwick, RI. In that census, there are three individuals named Thomas Remington in Warwick. However, I have made an assumption that his one is the individual listed with other families of the surnames Hill, Wood, and Browning, who I also am assuming are his relatives.

Some of the individuals listed on the same census page with Thomas are: Christopher Hill, William Wood, another William Wood, Sally Ann Wood, John Browning, Stephen Browning, and Benjamin Hill.

For this reason, I have made an additional assumption that this particular Thomas Remington is a son of Thomas Remington and Mary Wood (daughter of William Wood).

The household data in the 1830 census agrees with the known family information for Thomas, as it indicates one free white male age 30 - 40, one free white female age 30 - 40, one free white female under age 5, and one free white female age 5 - 10.

Please note that the above assumptions assumptions are supported by census and cemetery evidence, as well as family relationships confirmed by marriages. However, no birth record exists for Thomas, to prove the identity of his parents.

Thomas had a son named Charles, who may have been named after his (assumed) brother Charles.

I believe that Thomas is not mentioned in his father's Revolutionary War pension records because he was deceased when the final payment was made to his mother, Mary Remington, who died in 1837.

Thomas married Patience P. Hill Abt 1823. Patience (daughter of Christopher Hill and Mary Whipple) was born Abt 1797; died 2 May 1842; was buried , Historic Cemetery WK114, Tollgate Rd., Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 80. Mary Whipple Remington  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1824; died 12 Dec 1849; was buried , Historic Cemetery WK114, Tollgate Rd., Warwick, RI.

  11. 38.  Joseph Bennett Descendancy chart to this point (13.Mary3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born 8 Mar 1777, Warwick, RI.

Joseph married Penelope Andrews 25 Mar 1805, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

  12. 39.  John Bennett Descendancy chart to this point (13.Mary3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born 27 Feb 1779, Warwick, RI.

John married Robey Burlingame 20 May 1802, Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

  13. 40.  Asa Bennett Descendancy chart to this point (13.Mary3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born 2 Feb 1781, Warwick, RI.

  14. 41.  Tabitha Bennett Descendancy chart to this point (13.Mary3, 2.Thomas2, 1.Joseph1) was born 15 Nov 1783, Warwick, RI.

    Notes:

The marriage record says Daniel was "of Scituate, son of Joseph," so I am making an assumption that this Daniel and his marriage at Cranston belongs to this family line.

Daniel married Abigail "Nabby" Knight 7 Mar 1806, Cranston, Providence Co., RI. Abigail (daughter of Barzillai Knight and Eleanor Carpenter) was born Abt 1787; died Aft 1 Jun 1850. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

A son (deceased) named Henry is not mentioned in Joseph's will. However, the records for Warwick show the death of Henry H. Remington, son of Joseph & Ann, at age 19, unmarried, 29 August 1801. Joseph names his wife as Ann in his will. Whether there was another couple named Joseph & Ann in this time period, I have not yet discovered. In the meantime, I am including Henry in this family group, based on the death record.

In the 1830 Federal Census, Jeremiah is at Grafton, Worcester County, MA.

From Rehoboth, MA, Vital Records at newenglandancestors.org:

An individual named B. Chase has contacted me with additional data differing from mine concerning Jeremiah's parentage, so this may resolve some of the questions which remain (still needs more research).

In the 1850 Federal Census, Susan Remington, 50, is living in Scituate, RI, with Russell & Sophia Smith. I believe that Susan & Sophia are sisters.

  29. 56.  Elizabeth Remington Descendancy chart to this point (16.Sarah3, 3.Joseph2, 1.Joseph1) died Aft 8 Jun 1844.

    Notes:

Elizabeth's will of 8 June 1844 designates her sister Sarah Harris as executrix; Elizabeth was of Cranston, but apparently the will was written and signed at Scituate.

  31. 58.  Stephen Remington Descendancy chart to this point (19.John3, 5.Lippitt2, 1.Joseph1) was born Abt 1780, Herkimer or Washington County, NY; died 9 Jul 1849, Pittsburgh, PA; was buried , Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh PA.

    Notes:

Some genealogies have this Stephen as a son of John b.1770, brother of Eliphalet. However, if this Stephen was really born in 1780, that particular John could not have been his father (needs more research). Also, if he really was born in Ilion, NY, do we know that John & Mary (of RI) were living there?

The cemetery record states that Stephen was born in Washington County, NY. The family of David Remington was living there around the time of Stephen's birth. Could it be that he is their son, and not a son of John? Unfortunately, Boyd Scott Remington did not cite his sources or explain his reasoning.

According to descendant Ann Thompson, Stephen bought land in what is now downtown Pittsburgh, PA. This land, the site of Fort Fayette, was being sold by the federal government, so the deed is signed by President James Madison and Secretary of State James Monroe. Later Stephen & Martha sold this land and the house on it to son Zeri for $1.00.

Stephen married Rebeckah Watson 1804. Rebeckah (daughter of Alexander Watson and Persis Unknown) was born Abt 1782. [Group Sheet]
