According to Fuller's book "History of Warwick," Thomas was one of triplets, the other two of whom died. Another source says that it was his father Thomas who was one of triplets. In addition, a transcript of a Remington family Bible says it was his father.

He was a Revolutionary War soldier. According to the manuscript "Revolutionary War -- Burial Place & Service of RI Patriots," located at the Knight Library in Providence, Thomas served as a fifer in Capt. Hawkins' Co., Col. Varnum's Regiment. It also says he died 6 August 1817 at age 70, and was buried in the family lot at the Remington Farm, west side of East Rd., Coventry.

Death notice in the Providence Journal of 11 August 1817: "Judge Thomas Remington, at Coventry, RI, in 70th year." Martha A. Benns gives his date of death as 11 Aug 1817, but this is the date his death notice was in the newspaper.

Some genealogies have this Thomas marrying Mary Wood, also. Thomas Remington, Jr., and Mary Wood were married 7 June 1778 at Warwick, RI. However, if the Revolutionary War Pension files are accurate, these are two different Thomases, since the dates of death are quite different. The other one, who married Mary Wood, died 19 January 1831.

Thomas married Mary Rice 20 Dec 1772, Warwick, RI. Mary (daughter of Holden Rice and Elizabeth Warner) was born Abt 1752; died Aft 18 Mar 1779. [Group Sheet]

  3. 11.  Maplet Remington Descendancy chart to this point (8.Abigail2, 1.Hannah1) was born 16 Jun 1749, Warwick, RI; died 3 Dec 1841; was buried , Old Baptist Cemetery, Crompton, RI.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher, and to other sources as noted herein.)

Maplet is mentioned as Maplet Rice in her father's will.

The gravestone inscription in the RI Genealogical Register, Vol. 17, p. 199, says Mrs. Hannah, widow of Mr. William Rice. Did Maplet die earlier, and was Hannah a second wife? According to the Rhode Island Cemetery Database, Maplet (Remington) Rice, buried in WW004 with her husband, was born c.1749 and died 3 Dec 1841. Perhaps she was also called Hannah (?). William's will mentions his wife Maplet.

A Remington family Bible record of a later generation says that Maplet married Benjamin Rice of Warwick. This Bible was or is in the Rare Book Room of the General Library of the University of Michigan.

Maplet Rice became a member of the Maple Root Baptist Church in Coventry, RI, on 3 May 1788. They also noted that she died 7 Dec 1841. Perhaps that was the date of burial.

Her will, dated 24 Aug 1840, mentions daughter Sarah Remington, as well as grandchildren James D. Remington, Phebe Remington, Roby Munroe, & Abby Ann King.

Maplet is a family name passed down from the Gorton ancestry. The maiden name of Samuell Gorton's wife was Mary Maplett.

Maplet married William Rice 29 Jan 1769, Warwick, RI. William (son of Thomas Rice and Ann Low) was born 11 Feb 1744/45; died Aug 1825; was buried , Old Baptist Cemetery, Crompton, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Sarah's children were first cousins to our ancestor Maplet.

Sarah is mentioned as Sarah Holden in her father's will.

Sarah married Charles Holden 3 Nov 1771, Warwick, RI. Charles (son of John Holden and Dorothy Rice) was born 25 Dec 1746; died 21 Mar 1812, Providence, RI; was buried , Quaker Burial Ground, North Main St., Providence, RI. [Group Sheet]

Benjamin Remington, a resident of Warwick all his life, was part owner of the Crompton Mill in Coventry, RI. He married three of the Manchester sisters, all of whom died young of consumption (tuberculosis).

During the Revolutionary War era, in the fall of 1775 Benjamin was drafted into the Militia at Warwick, serving for three months as a private in Captain Rice's Company. In the winter/spring of 1776, he enlisted for one month as a volunteer in Captain Reuben Wightman's Company, serving for 33 days at Warwick Neck and possibly elsewhere during that time. Colonel Waterman, "whom he well knew," commanded the regiment. Afterwards, during the same year, Benjamin was again drafted into the Militia and at that time served 15 days under the same Captain and Colonel at Warwick Neck. Later, in September, he again served under Captain Wightman at Prudence Island for 35 days. During this time they had to take all the stock off the island to "prevent their falling into the hands of the enemy." In November and December he again served under Captain Rice for 15 days at Old Warwick (present-day Oakland Beach and Conimicut) "during the time the enemy took possession of Newport"; at the end of this term he was re-drafted and served 15 more days. In the summer of 1777 Ben was drafted again and served for 35 days at Tiverton under Captain Rice and General Spencer. They were supposed to "cross over to the island of Rhode Island, but didn't have enough boats." In the summer of 1778 he was re-drafted and served at Rhode Island (Acquidneck Island) in General Spencer's (or Sullivan's) Expedition for 24 days, under Captain Rice and Colonel Thomas Holden, "whom he well knew." Then in July 1779 he was again called out with the Militia to Bristol, where he served 15 days. His pension records state that he served as a sergeant for 10 months and five days. Benjamin Remington personally appeared in Court at East Greenwich on 21 Aug 1832, at the age of 79, to testify concerning his Revolutionary War service. His statement was attested to by John Wightman of Coventry, who served with him, and also Anthony Arnold. (Pension File # S21937)

Benjamin's will, dated Jan 1846 and proved 14 Aug 1837, mentions daughters Lydia Arnold (w/o Olney Rice Arnold) and Sarah Gorton Holden (w/o Bennett Holden), and sons James E. Remington, Jonathan Remington, Thomas Remington. His son Thomas was given the homestead farm given to Benjamin by his honored father, Thomas Remington, late of Warwick, Dec'd. All of Benjamin's children received land in the will. It also mentions grandsons Franklin s/o James E., Thomas s/o Thomas, and William s/o Jonathan.

In "The History of Warwick, RI" by Oliver Payson Fuller, he is referred to as Benjamin F. Remington. However, I have not seen his name with a middle initial elsewhere. According to Fuller, Benjamin lived at the family estate on Cowesett Rd., at the time the Crompton Mills were established. It was about a mile away from the mills. He was a member of the Town Council and of the Legislature. He left 140 acres to his sons Jonathan & Thomas.

He was probably one of the four RI presidential electors referred to in the following: "Vote cast for John Adams, of Massachusetts, for President; for Charles Pinckeny, of South Carolina 3 votes, and John Jay, of New York, 1 vote, for Vice President; all Federalists; Fifth Presidential Election, 1804; votes cast by Constant Taber, of Newport; James Aldrich, of Scituate; James Helme, of South Kingstown; Benjamin Remington, of Warwick."

Benjamin married Phebe Manchester 18 Apr 1779, Warwick, RI. Phebe (daughter of Matthew Manchester and Freelove Gorton) was born 8 Nov 1756; died 11 Feb 1786, Warwick, RI; was buried 13 Feb 1786, Remington-Arnold Lot, corner of Cowesett & Bald Hill Rds., Warwick, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

The marriage record identifies her as d/o Capt. Thomas Remington. Mary Rice is mentioned as a daughter in the will of Thomas Remington of Warwick, dated 18 June 1798.

    Notes:

The names of seven of the children of John and Molly are written in the Diary of Captain Samuel Tillinghast, Molly's father: Daniel, Polly, John, Henry, Varnum, Hannah, and Franklin. The only ones missing from the list are Marsha, who is mentioned in John's pension records, and Abigail, one of the three surviving children as of 1851. ("The Diary of Capt. Samuel Tillinghast 1757-1766," transcribed and edited by Cherry Fletcher Bamberg, Rhode Island Genealogical Society, 2000, p. xli.)

DAR records suggest that he had a second wife named Mary Greene. I haven't yet found any evidence of this (needs more research to confirm). See notes for John's wife Mary Tillinghast.

John Remington was at Cheshire, Berkshire Co., MA, in the Federal Censuses of 1800 and 1810.

    John Remmington was at Adams, Berkshire County, MA, in the 1820 (2 males, 2 females) and 1830 (1 male 70-80, 1 female 60-70) Federal Censuses. (1830: p. 29 of 32 at ancestry.com)

It appears from John's pension records that he was back in Warwick, RI in 1818. However, he may have gone back to his hometown for a period of time to take care of family matters, such as the estate of his mother-in-law (see Warwick Land Evidence).

According to "The Tillinghasts in America" by Wayne G. Tillinghast, Rhode Island Genealogical Society, 2006, p. 528, John probably moved there in 1787, as quoted from a letter from Captain Samuel Tillinghast to his daughter Freelove Greene: "Mr. Remington Sat off afoot for hoosuck, and purposes To Move his Famely in the Fall." Wayne G. Tillinghast notes that Adams, MA, was originally known as East Hoosuck Plantation.

He is likely the "Capt. John Remington who formerly lived near the corner of Eagle and Center streets in North Adams, who with his wife were buried in the old Colgrove Cemetery." (source: "Berkshire Genealogist" Vol. 26 No. 4 Fall 2005, p. 128; reprinted from "The Berkshire Hills" of 1900/01)

John, "of North Adams, MA," was a Lieutenant in Colonel Angell's RI Company in 1776, during the Revolutionary War. He also served in Captain Lewis's Company, under Colonel James M. Varnum in the RI Line. He first appeared in the Kent County Court of Common Pleas to appeal for a pension on 2 June 1818, as "a resident of Warwick, RI" (perhaps referring to it as his former home?). However, he later transferred from the RI Line to MA for purposes of his pension. He appeared in Court at Lenox, Berkshire County, MA, on 28 June 1820 at age 63 years and 8 months, at which time he was a resident of Adams, MA, to testify and sign a statement concerning his Revolutionary War service. He said that living with him were his wife Mary, age 58, who had been lame for 30 years, and his daughter Marsha, age 12. The pension records also state that "John Remington of Warwick, RI, qualifies for admission to the Society of Cinncinnati." (Pension File # S30053)

According to the book "Isaac Willey of New London, Conn., and his descendants" by Henry Willey, New Bedford, MA, 1888, p. 81, both John and his wife Mary were buried in one grave at North Adams, MA. Their funeral discourse was preached by Elder Leland, aged 85. This book gives John's date of death as 7 Feb 1840 and Mary's as 10 Feb 1840, both being buried 12 Feb 1840. These dates differ by one month from the dates in the pension file. A research trip to the Athanaeum in Pittsfield might clear up this discrepancy.

From "Berkshire Co., Mass., Probate Index, 1761 to 1900" page 243: John Remington, Adams, Adm., Jan 15 1840, #6117.

The Society of the Cincinnati was founded in 1783 for army officers who had served honorably for at least three years in the Revolution. It was to provide a context in which they could continue the friendships that had been established during the war, and through which they could provide financially for the livlihoods and families of those who had served their country so sacrificially. George Washington was chosen as the Society's first president. The French officers who had served alongside the Americans established a similar brother organization. Read more about the history of this organization at: [http://www.gwpapers.virginia.edu/articles/cincinnati/index.html] and also at Wikipedia.

Of interest -- from the website of Cincinnati, Ohio:
"Shortly after it was founded in 1788, the city was renamed Cincinnati in honor of the Society of the Cincinnati, an association of officers in the American Revolution (1775-1783). The organization itself was named after Roman statesman Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, whom legend held to be the model of virtue."

John married Mary "Molly" Tillinghast 17 Dec 1780, Warwick, RI. Mary (daughter of Samuel Tillinghast and Hannah Carr) was born 1763, RI; died 10 Jan 1840, North Adams, Berkshire Co., MA; was buried 12 Jan 1840, Colgrove Cemetery, North Adams, Berkshire Co., MA. [Group Sheet]

Jonathan served during the American Revolution from 1777 to 1779 as a Sergeant in Captain Thomas Carlisle's and Captain Garzia's companies, and in Colonel Robert Elliott's artillery regiment. The Revolutionary War Pension file for Jonathan Remington can be viewed at the National Archives and Records Administration (microfilm #W7559). His widow, Sarah (Rhodes) (Potter) (Remington) Greene, was age 86 in 1850 when application for the pension was made. Because Jonathan had died many years previously, in 1808, she told what she knew about Jonathan's Revolutionary War service. A statement was also made by Sarah's brother, William Nehemiah Rhodes, in which he said that Jonathan had served in the artillery with his brother John Remington.

These statements were attested to by Seth Burke, who was "well acquainted with John and Jonathan formerly of Warwick. They were brothers, and neighbors to me." Reportedly, John was a Lieutenant and Jonathan a Sergeant. Jonathan's military service was also attested to by Mary Aborn of Pawtuxet, age 82 at the time of the pension hearing in 1850. Born around 1767/68, she would have been approximately age 9 in 1776. She stated that John and Jonathan (probably stationed at Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI) "were in the habit of visiting at the house of my grandmother where I used to often see them, and they used to talk to me. I was a child of 9 or 10. My grandmother and husband was their uncle." (She was probably Mary/Marcy/Mercy Rhodes, d/o Malachi Rhodes & Waite Fenner. This makes sense, because her grandmother would have been Mercy Fenner, who married Stephen Remington as her second husband.)

    Remington, Jonathan, private, Col. Elliott's regiment, 1776; pay due L 39 8 11 (Arnold's "Vital Record of RI" Vol. 12, Revolutionary Rolls & Newspapers, p. 240; also "Colwell's Spirit of '76")

Sometime before 1780 Jonathan relocated to Berkshire County, MA. Town histories give evidence that he also served in the military there.

See "History of the Town of Cheshire, Berkshire County, Mass.," by Raynor & Petitclerc, Clark W. Bryan & Co, 1885:

Jonathan Remington is in the 1790 census at Adams, MA: 2 free white males 16+, 1 free white male <16, and 7 free white females. I suspect his brother John and family may have been living with them, and they aren't listed separately in this census.
Since the 1790 Census at Hancock, MA, lists another Jonathan Remington (possibly s/o Jonathan & Lorana), it may be that some of the above military records for Berkshire County, MA, could refer to him. However, the names listed for Col. Simond's regiment are names known to be of the community established by Rhode Islanders at Cheshire. It is also known that Jonathan and his brother John came to the Adams/Cheshire area and established families. John stayed in this area, but Jonathan relocated to Lansingburgh/Troy, NY around 1796, after his first wife died.

He was known in Adams and Cheshire as Colonel Jonathan Remington, and is referred to as such in the town records. He is also named as Jonathan Remington, Esq. Jonathan was owner of a tavern and store located on the southwest corner of the crossroads at the summit of the hill in Cheshire; this also may have included a hotel. At various times he served as the Town Moderator (chosen 1 Apr 1793), Justice of the Peace, Representative to the General Court at Boston, and sealer of brick molds. He is listed as a charter member of the Franklin Lodge of Masons. The names of "Jonathan and Phebe Rementon" appear in the early membership records of the First Baptist Church in Cheshire.

On 7 Aug 1792, Jonathan Remington Esq. was appointed one of a committee of nine to meet at Col. Remington's on the first Monday of September. On 5 Nov 1792, Col. Remington was nominated to issue a warrant to call the town together.

In 1793, subscribers to incorporating Cheshire as a town included Jonathan Remington (18s pd) and John Remington (4s pd).

Jonathan is mentioned in the book "The Life and Times of Samuel Gorton," by Adelos Gorton, p. 191. It states his birth date and that he married (unknown wife); settled in Berkshire Cty., MA; served in the Rev. War; and frequently represented the district of Cheshire in the Legislature previous to 1793.

While in Lansingburgh, Col. Jonathan Remington was a subscriber to "The Gleaner" by Judith Sargent Murray.

Note from Lois Remington Smith dated 9/2004: "Land Records of Adams, MA" Bks #1 thru #10, deeds signed in:

"I found these somewhere in the past years and made a brief note of them. It may have been in 'The Berkshire Quarterly.' Thought you might be interested if you don't already have them."

He was "empowered to stop said stage and to examine said stage"; and the stageman was to be directed not to land any passenger or baggage in Warwick without his permission. The penalty was $100. James Rhodes was appointed to likewise inspect the stage at the Village of Pawtuxet. (record found at RI Historical Society Library, Manuscript Room)

BSR includes another son named John Pearce Remington, b. c. 1787, who had a daughter Elizabeth. (? no documentation given ?)

From the booklet "The Walking Tour of Historic Apponaug Village," published by the Warwick Economic Development Department, and originally produced in pamphlet form by The Warwick Museum in 1989 -- concerning the Henry Remington House (ca. 1800/01, with later alterations), 3376 Post Road: "This gable-roofed, center-chimney Federal dwelling with pedimented fanlight doorway was remodeled during the Victorian era when the sash was replaced and a bay window added on the south side. It is used as a storehouse for the building at the rear, which was once a favorite haunt of quahoggers and rough & tumble seamen, but is now a family restaurant. The house was built by Henry Remington, a Revolutionary War soldier and judge of the Rhode Island Supreme Court. This area became known as 'Judge's Row,' and was once the most significant part of the Village."

This is now The Remington House Inn, a very nice restaurant.

    Notes:

(If you use any portion of these notes, please give credit to me, Lois Sorensen, Remington researcher, and to other sources as noted herein.)

Sarah Rice was first cousin to our ancestor Maplet.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Sarah Remington, widow age 75, is living at Warwick, Kent, RI. With her are : Charles E. 23 (her son - a weaver), Dorcas 20 (his first wife), Mary E. Bates 10 (sister of Dorcas; later became Charles's second wife), and three of her other sons -- Franklin 24, William R. 22, & Jonathan M. 25. However, Jonathan's and Franklin's ages seem to be way off.

From Oliver Payson Fuller's "History of Warwick," pp. 318 & 319, regarding the Crompton Six Principle Baptist Church: "Soon after the brethren were set off from the mother church [Maple Root] in Coventry as a branch, they united their efforts to secure a permanent place for worship. Mrs. Sarah Remington, widow of James E. Remington, gave them a lot of land consisting of about a quarter of an acre, on certain conditions, among which were, that the church should build a meeting house upon it within six months, keep it in good repair and use it, or allow it to be used only for religious purposes, failing in which, the lot was to revert to the grantor, her heirs, assigns, &c. This deed, which is dated December 26, 1843, further provided that said house shall be open and free for all religious societies, when not occupied by said branch of the Crompton Mills Six Principle Baptist Society. The house was dedicated September 7, 1844. The church continued as a branch of the Maple Root, until April 10, 1845, when it was formally organized as an independent church. On September 6, 1845, it united with the yearly Conference. November 28, 1850, William Rice was ordained deacon."

Sarah (Rice) Remington is mentioned in the will of her mother, Maplet (Remington) Rice (dated 24 Aug 1840, proved 14 Feb 1842).

    Notes:

Most likely his middle name was Eldridge, named after his paternal grandmother.

James & Sally were first cousins, since his father and her mother were siblings to each other; their parents were also siblings of our ancestor Jonathan.

There is a James E. Remington at East Greenwich in the 1830 US Census.

    Notes:

"Jonathan & Ardelis Remington" witnessed the will of Dinah Baker on 9 Aug 1813 at Cranston.

The family farm was on Natick Rd. above Oaklawn. The story is told that he bought the land from the Indians with a peck measure of Spanish milled dollars. Many years later, someone tilling the land found such a coin, probably dropped by the Indians as they left. If true, this would seem to substantiate the story.

The death entry at Warwick City Hall says Jonathan died a widower on 19 Apr 1866 at age 82, of old age. The RI Death Index identifies him as son of Benjamin & Phebe Remington.

The will of Jonathan Remington of Warwick, yeoman, was dated 22 Oct 1860 and proved 14 May 1866. It mentions two sons, Ferdinand and Thomas; one daughter, Sally R; grandson William H.; and Betsey Remington widow of Thomas Remington dec'd. (Warwick book pp 231 - 233)

According to the RI Cemetery Database, the cemetery is located "at 649 Natick Rd. across the wall from CR080."

    Notes:

Elizabeth may be Bethiah who is noted in the Warwick births. There is not a birth record for Elizabeth, although she is mentioned in the will of Josephus.

Elizabeth — John S. Whitford. John was born Abt 1790; died Aft 24 Sep 1823. [Group Sheet]

  30. 48.  Daniel Remington Descendancy chart to this point (15.John3, 8.Abigail2, 1.Hannah1) was born Abt 1782, RI; died Bef 1851.

    Notes:

I believe Daniel may have died a very tragic death. From "The History of Cheshire," p. 11:

"One winter, Daniel Remington, son of Col. Remington, left for Adams on a Saturday morning to replenish his stock of leather. He was the settlement shoemaker as well as the poet. On his return to the hill in the afternoon, he was overtaken by a severe snow storm and lost his way. A search party found him the next morning 'standing erect with his hands tightly clasped to the rails of a rude fence a short distance from his home.' He was frozen to death."

"He was of a very happy and jovial disposition and was the village poet." (source: "Berkshire Genealogist" Vol. 26 No. 4 Fall 2005, p. 128; reprinted from "The Berkshire Hills" of 1900/01)

This must have been Daniel, the son of John, who was a shoemaker. "Daniel Remington had thge reputation of making the finest shoe of any one in the country." ("The History of Cheshire" by Raynor and Petticlerc, p 97)

The 1820 Federal Census lists a Daniel T. Remington and family at Cheshire (6 in household).

BSR says he was "of Maine." (no source documentation)

  31. 49.  Mary "Polly" Remington Descendancy chart to this point (15.John3, 8.Abigail2, 1.Hannah1) was born Abt 1785, RI; died 1870.

    Notes:

In the Federal Census of 1870, Mary Bradford is a widow aged 86 RI, living at Adams, Berkshire Co., MA. She is with her son-in-law and daughter, Stephen & Emily Whipple.

Mary married William Bradford 1806. William was born 1786; died 1848. [Group Sheet]

    1. 129. Maria L. Bradford  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1808.
    2. 130. Jane A. Bradford  Descendancy chart to this point was born 1815, MA; died 1893.
    3. 131. Emily Bradford  Descendancy chart to this point was born Abt 1818, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1870.

  32. 50.  John Remington, Jr. Descendancy chart to this point (15.John3, 8.Abigail2, 1.Hannah1) was born Abt 1787, MA or RI; died Bef 1851.

    Notes:

BSR (Boyd Scott Remington, family researcher and compiler) says John was of Lansingburgh, NY, and had children Norman E., John E., & Martha. I have added these names to John's family, and research is ongoing. See notes for the two sons.

There is a Norman Remington in the census records 1850 - 1870 at Lansingburgh, but there is no indication who his father may have been. I have made an assumption that this Norman is a son of this particular John Remington, as noted by BSR. Later records give Norman's birthplace as Lansingburgh, and his estimated birth year strongly suggests that he belongs to John Remington as shown in the following censuses.

In the Federal Census of 1810, John Remington Jr. is at Cheshire, Berkshire Co., MA. The household consists of 1 free white male under 10, 1 free white male 26 - 44, and 1 free white female 16 - 25. This looks like a young couple with a young son. John Remington (presumably his father and family) is listed in the same town.

The Federal Census of 1820 lists John Remington at Troy, Rensselaer Co., NY. I have made an assumption that it is this particular John Remington, for three reasons -- the above-mentioned BSR genealogy chart; the fact that John's uncle, Jonathan, settled at Lansingburgh (adjoining Troy); and evidence from Norman's and John E.'s families that links them to Troy and Lansingburgh. The household in 1820 consists of 1 free white male <10 (b 1811 - 1820), 1 free white male 10 - 15 (b 1805 - 1810), 1 free white male 26 - 44 (b 1776 - 1794), 3 free white females <10 (b 1811 - 1820), 1 free white female 10 - 15 (b 1805 - 1918), and 1 free white female 26 - 44 (b 1776 - 1794). This data suggests that John and his wife may have had 2 sons and 4 daughters.

Much information on John's son John Edward Remington and his descendants came from Delwin Remington. Other sources are noted.

John married Unknown Wife Abt 1810. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

According to Rev. Shepherd in "The History of Kirby Underdale," Henry resided at Adams, MA; Burlington, VT; Cleveland, OH; and Huron, OH.

A genealogy chart at NE Historic Genealogical Society Library lists four children for this couple: Rev. Benjamin Franklin, Julia Ann, Maria Ann, & Fidelia.

Henry married Betsy Lamb Bef 1815. Betsy was born 1793, MA; died 1878. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

I am making an assumption that the entries for Benjamin Franklin Remington in the church records of the First Baptist Church of North Adams, MA, pertain to this individual. His sister, Abigail, is also listed among the members.

Benjamin F. Remington Bapt 1819 Died at Peterboro NY Apr 4, 1866 aged 67 yrs.

  39. 57.  Maplet REMINGTON Descendancy chart to this point (16.Jonathan3, 8.Abigail2, 1.Hannah1) was born 2 Mar 1782, RI or MA; died 20 Dec 1861, West Greenwich, RI; was buried , Pine Grove Cemetery, Washington St., Coventry, RI.

    Notes:

The RI Cemetery Database gives the name of Charles's wife as Marcy Remington. Probably this was a transcription error. Maplet Battey's grave is in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Coventry, but the gravestone is missing. The West Greenwich death record says she died 20 Dec 1861 at 79 yrs., 9 mos., and 18 days. It identifies her birthplace as Warwick, but does not name her parents. However, the 1850 WG census gives her birthplace as Massachusetts.

In the 1860 Census at West Greenwich, Maplet was age 78, living with Charles and Ann Battey, her son and daughter-in-law.

Maplet married Charles TIBBETTS 1 Jun 1806, Warwick, Kent Co., RI. Charles (son of Waterman TIBBETTS and Mercy WATERMAN) was born 25 Jan 1766, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; died 2 Oct 1812, Warwick, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Brayton Cemetery, Apponaug, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 141. Julia Ann Tibbetts  Descendancy chart to this point was born 20 Jun 1807; died 3 Feb 1882, Warwick, RI; was buried , Brayton Cemetery, Apponaug, RI.
    2. 142. Sally Williams TIBBETTS  Descendancy chart to this point was born 30 Dec 1808, East Greenwich, Kent Co., RI; died 15 Dec 1899, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI.

Maplet married James Battey 27 Aug 1814, RI. James (son of Nicholas Battey, Jr. and Margaret Congdon) was born 23 Jun 1773, Cranston, Providence Co., RI; died 18 Apr 1853, West Greenwich, RI; was buried , Pine Grove Cemetery, Washington St., Coventry, RI. [Group Sheet]

    Children:
    1. 143. Margaret Matilda Battey  Descendancy chart to this point was born 27 Dec 1817, RI; died 5 Jan 1887, Tuscola, Douglas Co., IL.
    2. 144. Mary Remington Battey  Descendancy chart to this point was born 2 Mar 1822; died 10 Jan 1894; was buried , Maple Root Cemetery, Coventry, RI.
    3. 145. Charles James Battey  Descendancy chart to this point was born 27 Apr 1827, West Greenwich, RI; died 19 Mar 1899, Washington, RI; was buried , Pine Grove Cemetery, Washington, RI.

  40. 58.  Elizabeth "Betsey" Remington Descendancy chart to this point (16.Jonathan3, 8.Abigail2, 1.Hannah1) was born 24 Dec 1785, Berkshire Co., MA; died 7 Oct 1870, Apponaug, Warwick, RI; was buried , Warwick, RI Historical Cemetery 60, off Cowesett Rd. at Bald Hill.

    Notes:

I have made an assumption that Betsey, Maplet's sister, is the Elizabeth Remington b. c1783, "daughter of Jonathan," who married Thomas Remington b. c1780, son of Benjamin & Phebe (Manchester) Remington. They were first cousins.

In 1860 Elizabeth Remington, age 77, is living at Warwick, RI, next to Ferdinand & Abby Remington. In 1870 she is age 86 and still at Warwick (Apponaug Post Office); she is living with Levi & Elizabeth Baker. Apparently she died not long after this census was taken.

The death record says "daughter of Jonathan," b. c1783. The RI Cemetery Database says c1784. Maplet's sister was born in December 1785, so assuming that the date of death is correct, and that the date of birth is correct in the family Bible, Elizabeth would have died just short of 85 years old. (There was another Jonathan Remington born in Scituate in 1743, but I have not yet discovered data on any family he may have had, such as a daughter named Elizabeth/Betsey.)

Additional evidence is found in the will of Thomas's brother, Jonathan d. 1866, who mentions Betsey Remington, widow of Thomas Remington, deceased. This probably would have been Elizabeth, his sister-in-law; her husband had died in 1853. So Betsey was her nickname. Betsey is also the name written in the family Bible as one of Maplet's sisters.

Elizabeth's birthplace as MA came from the papers of Mary E. Rice late of East Greenwich, RI, now deceased. This agrees with the data in the 1860 & 1870 Federal Censuses, which both have Massachusetts as Elizabeth's birthplace, and thus are additional support for her being Maplet's sister.

Elizabeth married Thomas Remington 3 Jan 1803, Warwick, RI. Thomas (son of Benjamin Remington and Phebe Manchester) was born Abt 1781, Warwick, RI; died 14 Nov 1853; was buried , Warwick, RI Historical Cemetery 60, off Cowesett Rd. at Bald Hill. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

See will of Sally Greene of Cranston, widow, dated 14 Dec 1836, proved 4 Nov 1854, pg. 76. In it she mentions by name her son and two grandchildren. So this "Sally" must have been the Sarah who was married to Jonathan Remington.

In the Federal Census of 1850, Edward & Julia Remington, ages 52 & 38, are living at Providence, RI.

On 20 July 1822 his wife Phebe H. Remington petitioned the Town Council concerning her husband who was deranged, asking that his uncle William N. Rhodes be "appointed guardian over the property of her unfortunate husband."

Official probate documents show that as of 22 July 1822 Edward S. R. Remington residing in Cranston was delirious and incapable of managing his own affairs, so William N. Rhodes, Esq., of North Providence was appointed guardian of his proprrty and finances. However, on 14 Apr 1827, William N. Rhodes resigned his guardianship and said Edward may be restored to all rights and privileges of a freeman.

On 12 Nov 1857, Edward submitted a written statement to the Probate Court of Cranston, concerning a woman who had come to them with a complaint that Edward had not paid her board for the past three or four weeks. He explained that he thought he had been married to the aforesaid woman in a lawful manner, but to his disappointment, her mother-in-law from South Boston came to visit them in July; she informed Edward that the woman's lawful husband lived with her in South Boston "which astonished me very much you must suppose."

On 28 Nov 1857, his son Richard T. Remington reported to the Probate Court of Cranston that his father was in want of discretion and incapable of managing his affairs and thereby liable to bring himself and family to want. He prays that someone be appointed guardian of Edward's person and estate.

On 21 Dec 1857, Edward S. R. Remington, "now boarding in Providence," sent a note of remonstrance against a petition of the Cranston Town Council.

In April 1858, his son Richard T. Remington signed a statement that Edward S. R. Remington of Cranston "is an unsuitable person to manage his affairs with discretion," prays said court to appoint a guardian of the estate according to law.

Subsequently, on 15 May 1828, seven individuals signed a petition to the Town Council concerning Edward S. R. Remington, residing near Pawtuxet with his family; they said he was "incompetent to manage his domestic business, or any other lawful duty" and requested that a discreet person be appointed to take care of his person and property as soon as convenient. A similar note is signed by 13 of his "friends" (no date).

On 29 May 1858, three men of Cranston were appointed to take an inventory of Edward's estate, to be delivered to Daniel A. Smith, guardian of the estate of the ward. On 27 Aug 1858 his real estate was valued at $2200.

The court documents state that his property is the farm that was the homestead of his mother, Sally Greene, late of Cranston, deceased; bordered by land of Arthur and Anstice Greene, Brown & Ives, Salt River, and a road leading from Pawtuxet Village to the City of Providence. In May 1860 a document was signed allowing the sale of Edward's property to pay off his debts; this was signed by Richard, Sarah, & Edward.

He is likely the Edward Remington age 66 farmer born Cranston, living in Providence in the 1865 RI State Census.

Edward married Phebe Hunt Cole 17 Oct 1819, Pawtuxet, Warwick, RI. Phebe was born Abt 1800; died 29 Jan 1828; was buried , Rhodes-Greene Lot, Bluff Ave., Cranston, RI. [Group Sheet]
