Jonathan Remington

Notes:

The exact identity of this Jonathan is unclear (see notes below). It is possible that he was a son of a Remington family of Prudence Island, and married an Allen girl from there. Both the Remingtons and the Allens lived on Prudence Island, Portsmouth, and had family connections and land connections.

There is a marriage record for Jonathan Remington, of Jonathan & Susannah (or Luranah?) Remington of East Greenwich, 18 Oct 1753, to Mary Thurston (RI Friends' Records). At first it was unclear to me whether this might be a first marriage for this particular Jonathan (mother's name unclear); however, Mary (Thurston) Remington died between 1777 and 1782, probably after her husband Jonathan died. See notes for Mary Thurston.

Jonathan was probably born in East Greenwich, or at least spent part of his youth there, since his birth is registered there. At some point, probably before 1741, his family moved to Massachusetts. He may have married there or in RI, but apparently at some point probably moved to Portsmouth, RI, because at least two of his children were born there; at least, their births were registered there. I am not sure when or where Jonathan and his wife died. He is very possibly the Jonathan Remington listed in the 1790 Federal Census at Hancock, MA. His son Allen lived in both MA and RI.

"A Scattered People: An American Family Moves West" by Gerald W. McFarland, p. 81 (Google Books) says that Allen Remington and his father (Jonathan) had briefly lived at Exeter, RI; Allen came to Hancock, MA, from RI after the Revolution.

Boyd Scott Remington's chart shows this Jonathan married to Prudence. However, according to an unpublished manuscript of "Family Notes" at the Knight Memorial Library in Providence, "Jonathan Remington, b.1726 Hancock, MA, married Pruda, b.1731, and had a son Allen who married Deidama; they in turn had a son Jonathan who married Diana Hall." This is clearly the same family group, but unfortunately appears to be different Jonathans, because this one was born at East Greenwich, RI, in 1730 (at least the birth was recorded there). Which is correct? (See notes for Allen's son Jonathan b.1784) See also DAR ID Number: 25799, Mrs. Sarah M. Remington Taylor; this says Jonathan was born 1726 at Hancock, MA.

BSRs chart shows the son Allen as having lived and then dying at Hancock, MA. However, James N. Arnold's "Vital Record of RI" shows Allen & Diadama Remington on the membership list of the First General Baptist Church of Richmond, RI, on 17 September 1810. Possibly Jonathan's family, and/or one or more of his children, moved to RI and then back to MA. But was Jonathan, father of Allen, born in MA or RI? This Jonathan needs more research. See notes for his father, implying that he may have moved out of state (his land was sold at public auction to pay outstanding debts).

James N. Arnold's Vital Record of RI, Richmond, lists the following Remingtons as church members in 1770: Hepsibeth, Jonathan, Lydia, Martha, Prudence, and William. This would appear to support part of this family group in BSRs chart; but who is William? At the present I am assuming he is another son, and thus adding him to the list of Jonathan's children, pending further research. However, the possibility remains that these were two different but related Remington families.

See notes for his (assumed) father, Jonathan. Could this possibly be the "William Remington, Merchant, of New York," who married Rhoda Bullen of Medway, MA, at Providence, RI, around March 1796? (see Columbian Centinel of 19 Mar 1796)

Or, he could be the William Remington, farmer, who married Patience and settled in Oneida County, New York. Some family trees online have these two individuals as one person.

Notes:

Allen & Diadama were on the membership list of the First General Baptist Church of Richmond, RI, on 17 Sept 1810. (source: James N. Arnold's "Vital Records of RI," Church Records, p. 411) However, this is confusing because Allen was already widowed by 1809, and probably married his second wife Margaret about this time. Perhaps the church leaders had not heard that Diadama had died by then, and retained the names on the list of members.

Allen, probably born at Portsmouth, RI, appears to have married or at least had children in MA. However, Allen and his first wife may have been back in RI at some point and had some association with the Baptist Church in Richmond. (see above). Their children probably married in MA; at least some of them moved westward.

Boyd Scott Remington includes a second son named William born in 1820, but I don't think it is accurate, as there was already another son named William. Allen's estate documents mention one son named William.

Allen died intestate, and the numerous legal documents pertaining to the settlement of his estate in Berkshire Co., MA, mention the names of his children and stepchildren, as well as his second wife Margaret, who died not long after Allen did.

"Jonathan Remington, a native of Rhode Island, married Diana Hall, and about 1804 located in Lorraine, on the farm now occupied by Lucius Beeman, on road 50, where he took up a large tract of land and built a log house. He had born to him five sons and two daughters, viz., Clark H., (deceased), Edmund (deceased), Rachel (Mrs. William Waterman) (deceased), Diadama (Mrs. Hial Hall) (deceased), Orsamus (deceased), and Allen and Thomas who reside in Ellisburgh. Clark H. Remington was born in this town in 1805, and was reared upon his father's farm. He married Huldah, daughter of Daniel Hall and they had two sons and four daughters. viz., Ann E. (Mrs. T. B. In the 1840 Federal Census, Johnathan Remington and family are listed at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Jonathan & Dinah are living at Lorraine, Jefferson, NY. With them are son Thomas & daughter-in-law Ladorsa. Also there is Dinah Hall, but it is unclear who she is, particularly because her age is unclear. She may be a granddaughter or a niece. They are living near brother Noel Remington and family, and also near son Edmund and family .

In the 1860 Federal Census, J. Remington is 75 RI and his wife Dinah is 75 MA. They are still at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY. With them is Thomas 32 NY and his wife (Laury?) and their presumed daughter Mary 8 NY. They are near H. Remington 36 NY and his wife Nancy 32 NY and their son age 7 NY. This is probably the family of Noel's son Hiram.

In 1804 the William and Isaac Lanfear, Asa and Aaron Brown, and Jonathan Remington families arrived. The first town meeting was held on 5 May 1805 at the house of John Alger in Lorraine village."

In the 1850 Federal Census, Allen & Palmyra are living at Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., NY with their two children. Allen's wife and the two children listed were born in Canada, according to the census data. However, the 1860 census shows Palmyra and daughter Diadama as being born in NY. In 1850 they are next door to Jeremiah & Hannah Sheffield and family; Jeremiah -- although a couple of years older than Allen -- is his nephew.

In the 1850 Federal Census, "Almerin" & Eliza are living at Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., NY, with their young son Walter. In the same town are other Remington relatives, including Jonathan & Dinah, Noel & Nancy, and some of their children.

One descendant has the birth date of Lenardo James Remington as 2 June 1814 at Hancock, MA (note: email from M. Lynn Breyfogle).

After his parents died, Lenardo James was probably raised by his half-brother Jonathan, who emigrated to NY State.

I have not found the family in the 1850 census. They are incorrectly indexed by Ancestry in the 1860 & 1870 census transcriptions.

In the 1860 Federal Census, James L. & Elisabeth Remington, ages 46 & 37, are living at Macon, Lenawee Co., MI. They have seven children: Sarah 20, Ann 16, Lorane 14, Mariah 8, Ransom R. 6, Clara 4, & Ellen 4. Also in the household is Lyster Wheeler, 15, a farm laborer.

In the 1870 Federal Census, James L. & Elizabeth Remington are ages 55 & 47. They are still at Macon, MI. With them are seven children: Mariah 18, Ransom 16, Clara 14, Ella 14, William 9, Alisa 6, and James L. 3.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Lenardo J. Remington is age 65, and Elizabeth A. is 57. They are still living at Macon, Lenawee Co., MI, with Lorain, 33, and Ransom R., 26.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Jeremiah & Hannah are living at Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., NY, with their four children; two others have died by then. Jeremiah is a farmer, age 48. His son Oscar, age 26, is shown as a merchant, while Daniel, 18, is "farming." The family is next door to Allen & Palmyra Remington and their two children, Lois 17 & Oscar 13. Even though he is younger, Allen Remington age 46 is actually Jeremiah's uncle, youngest brother of Jeremiah's mother, Martha (Remington) Sheffield.

On 1 April 1860, Jeremiah & Hannah signed a deed selling a parcel of land to Gardner Marsh, Jr. This deed was written and witnessed by Edmund Remington, Justice of the Peace, and was recorded by the town clerk on 17 May 1860 at 2 PM. Edmund Remington was Jeremiah's first cousin, being a son of Jonathan Remington, brother of Jeremiah's mother Martha. The land defined in the deed had been previously bought by Martha (Remington) Sheffield on 8 March 1825, from the Wardwells and the Manns. It consisted of 71 acres, and was purchased by Martha for $599.60. When she died in August 1828, Jeremiah took possession of this land, and lived on it with his family from that time until he sold it in 1860. (A copy of this deed is recorded at Jefferson County, NY, Deed Book 142, pp. 335 & 336; a photocopy of these pages was kindly furnished by Mary Jones of Graeagle, CA, a descendant).

There is a Clark Hall age 26 living at Lorrain, NY, in 1850. I feel that his name must have some connection to Clark H. Remington. Perhaps they share a common ancestor.

In the 1870 Federal Census, "Orsamus" & Amanda are still living at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY with their four children and one (presumed) daughter-in-law, Lenora (w/o Charles).

In the 1880 Federal Census, "Orsmus" Remington is still living at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY, with his wife Amanda and two sons, Johnathan & Mortimer. Also living with them is a grandson, Willie Wells, age 5, born NY.

This family group is living nearby other family members, such as nephew Daniel J. Remington, sister-in-law Huldah Remington living with her son-in-law Byron Hitchcock, and other Remingtons who are probably more distantly related, such as Hiram & Levi Remington.

In both the 1860 and the 1870 Federal Census, Allen & Susan are living at Ellisburgh with their children Edmund & Mary. However, in 1860 their son is listed as Rufus (same estimated year of birth).

In the Federal Census of 1880, Allen & Susan are living at Ellisburgh, NY. With them are son Earl, and son Rufus and family.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Thomas & Laura are living at Ellisburgh, and with them is Tom's mom, Dinah, age 85. Next door is Dewitt Remington and his young wife Ella. DeWitt may be his first cousin.

In 1860 they are still in Lorraine, with a 7-year-old son, name illegible. In 1870 Hiram & Nancy are living in Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., NY, with their 17-year -old son (Brian?-hard to read). In 1880, Hiram & Nancy are back in Lorraine, and in the household with them is their married son Byron, his wife Alma, and their daughter Gertrude.

He is probably the Hiram Remington 1824-1905 buried in Ellisburgh, Jefferson County, NY, listed as a Civil War Soldier on the NYGenweb site.

I am making an assumption that Dewitt age 10 is a son of Noel & Nancy, because he is living with them in the 1860 census. However, they are living next door to Hiram & Nancy, so he might belong to them. In the 1870 Federal Census, DeWitt 20 and his 16-year-old wife, Ella, are next door to Thomas & Ladorsa Remington. Thomas may be his first cousin.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Paris & Eliza Clark, ages 21 and 17, are living at a hotel in Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., NY. I am not sure it is this same Paris Clark, but have entered the information pending further research to confirm. It appears that Eliza was his first wife.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Paris D. & Frances Clark, ages 35 and 30, are living at Sandy Creek, Oswego Co., NY. They have two children: Stella M., 13, and George L., 8. Paris is a farmer. Also in the household are George C. & Eliza Clark, ages 20 and 18.

In 1880 the family is living at Washington, DC, where Paris is a hotel keeper. He is age 44 and Frances is 39. They have four children: Stella, 21; George, 18; Pearlie, 7; and Flora, 4.

I have made an assumption that "Diadema" Auger (?), wife of Frank, listed in the 1860 Federal Census at Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., NY, is a daughter of Palmyra Remington, because she is living there with the family. Palmyra's mother-in-law was named Diadamia.

Could he be the Oscar Remington, age 41, living at Alfred, Allegany Co., NY in the 1880 Federal Census? However, it says he was born in NY. He has a wife Ellen, 34, and a son Wardner, 9. This needs more research to confirm whether it is the same Oscar. This same couple is at Independence, Allegany Co., NY, in 1870.

In both the 1860 and 1870 Federal Censuses, her name is written as Mariah. In 1880 she is listed as Maria Pennington.

In the 1900 Federal Census, "Ranson" Remington, 45 MI, is a servant and single, living at Madison Co., MT.

In 1910, Ransom R. Remington, 56 MI, is single and boarding at Washington Bar Pct, Madison, MT. The census data says his parents were b MA/PA. Ransom's nephew, Lenardo Remington, and his family are also living in Madison County.

In the 1920 Federal Census, Ransome R. & Eva Remington are living at Gardena, Los Angeles Co., CA. They are near his brother William and wife Alfonsine.

Ransom married Eva Unknown Aft 1 Jun 1910. Eva was born Abt 1862, MI; died Aft 1 Jan 1920, CA. [Group Sheet]

In the 1880 Federal Census, William is age 19, single, and a farm laborer living with the George Howell family at Macon, Lenawee Co., MI.

He must have been married shortly after this, because in the 1900 census, I believe he is the William Remington living in MT, whose data says he has been married 20 years. In the 1900 Federal Census, a William & Alfonsene Remington, ages 39 & 44, both b MI, are living at Madison Co., MT. They have one son, "Larnardo," age 17. William is a farmer. The census data shows his parents as being born in MA & NY.

In the 1920 Federal Census, William H. & Alfonsine Remington, ages 59 & 62, are living at Gardena, Los Angeles Co., CA. They are near his brother Ransom and his wife Eva.
