  1. 1.  Ellery Remington was born 12 May 1811, Tiverton, Newport Co., RI; died 29 Aug 1876, Providence, Providence Co., RI.

    Notes:

    Ellery & Lydia are in the 1850 Federal Census at New Bedford, p. 273, with two sons. In 1860, p. 832, their household includes son Charles, 15, and Hannah S. Hathaway, 31, a dressmaker. She may be Lydia's sister.

    In the 1870 Federal Census, Ellery, Lydia, Charles, & Clara are living in Ward 5, Providence, RI. Perhaps Clara is Charles's wife (?).

    Ellery's official death entry at Providence City Hall says he was born in Tiverton; died at 37 Claverick St., age 65y 5m 17d; gives the cause of death as disease of the spine; and identifies his parents as Thomas & Alice.

    Ellery married Lydia Howland Hathaway 1 Apr 1844, New Bedford, MA. Lydia (daughter of Isaac Tobey Hathaway and Hannah S. Maxfield) was born 7 Apr 1822, Dartmouth, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1870. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    In the 1870 Federal Census, Charles & Clara are ages 25 & 20, living with his parents, Ellery & Lydia, in Ward 5, Providence, RI. Charles's middle initial appears to be F.

    By 1880 Ellery has died. In the census Charles's age is given as 32, and Clara is 26. They are boarding in the home of Margaret Arnold at 180 High St., District 29, Providence, RI. Coincidentally, Jeremiah & Hannah Remington are also there, with their daughter and grandson. However, they are not closely related to Charles's family.

    Info from Joanne Bushey, a descendant: "On Aug. 21, 1862 he enlisted as a private to fight for the Union in the Civil War. He declared himself to be 18 years old at the time, but he was probably 17. He served in the Massachusetts Company A, 3rd Cavalry Regiment until he was discharged in May of 1865."

    Joanne has a pair of spurs which were assumed to be owned by Charles.

    Charles married Clarissa "Clara" Allen Bunker 12 Feb 1868, Edgartown, MA. Clarissa (daughter of Charles Bunker and Jane Pease Allen) was born 20 Feb 1849, Edgartown, MA; died Aft 15 Apr 1910; was buried , Woburn, MA. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    Edward W. is listed in the 1850 Federal Census as age 6 months. Therefore, even though the published birth records show him to be born in 1850, he must have been born in 1849. The only other possibility is that there was an infant who died, and a second son was given the same name.

    New Bedford VRs show his dob as 20 Dec 1849.

    Notes:

    In the Federal Census of 1900, "Isabelle M. Wetherall" is age 22, living with her mother Clara A. Wetherell 50 and adoptive father Frank Wetherell 57. They are at Woburn Ward 3, Middlesex Co., MA. Frank is a journalist; Isabel is a school teacher. She is listed as his adopted daughter.

    In the Federal Census of 1910, Joseph & Isabel are living at Reading, Middlesex Co., MA. They have two daughters: Clarissa A. 2 & Edith M. 1.

    Isabel married Joseph F. Patten 17 Jan 1906, Woburn, MA. Joseph was born Abt 1879, MA. [Group Sheet]
