In the 1830 Federal Census, Benedict is residing at Northbridge, Worcester County, MA. He is still there in 1850, with his wife Mary and two daughters -- Margaret & Sarah, and daughter-in-law Lydia M. In the 1860 census, Benedict & Mary are ages 61 & 62, still residing at Northbridge. Their daughter Sarah L., age 24, is with them

The name on his gravestone reads Benedick Remington.

Benedict married Mary Ann Cathcart Abt Jun 1818, Mendon, MA. Mary (daughter of Jonathan Cathcart and Margaret Peggy Gaul) was born Abt Mar 1798, Nantucket, MA; died 16 Jun 1869, Northbridge, Worcester Co., MA; was buried , Blackstone Cemetery, Blackstone, MA. [Group Sheet]

In the 1850 Federal Census, James & Lucy are living at Northbridge, Worcester Co., MA. I don't see that their son is with them, so perhaps he died young.

In 1870 James C. & Lucy are still there, and James is a saloon keeper. In the household are two young women, Minnie Graves 18 NY & Louisa Rockwood 24 MA.

James's birth is recorded at Northbridge, but was at Mendon.

James married Lucy Munyon Prentice 7 May 1840, Milbury, MA. Lucy (daughter of Ezra Munyon and Sarah Knapp) was born Between 1818 and 1821, VT; died 3 Sep 1897. [Group Sheet]

In the 1850 Federal Census, Charles & Mary are living at Northbridge, Worcester Co., MA, with their three children. They are next door to Benedict & Mary. In 1880 they are living in Geneseo, Henry Co., Illinois. With them is granddaughter Jennie M. Remington, age 8, born in Illinois.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Charles & Mary are living at Shell Rock, Butler Co., IA. He is 79 and she is 80. According to the census data, she has had 4 children, and three are still living.

Charles's birth in Mendon, MA, was recorded in Northbridge, MA, VRs.

Charles married Mary Ann Scarborough Nov 1841, Northbridge, MA. Mary was born Sep 1819, CT; died Aft 1 Jun 1900. [Group Sheet]

Thomas's birth at Mendon, MA, was recorded at Northbridge, MA.

Thomas & Susan also had a daughter born 5 May 1846 at Northbridge, MA. She would have been between Thomas and Leverett.

In the 1850 Federal Census, Thomas & Susan Remington, both age 27, are living at Northbridge, Worcester Co., MA. With them are: Thomas A. 5, Leverett L. 3, Edwin F. 1; and Silas Smith 50, laborer.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Thomas Remington 38 RI, a mechanic, & his wife, Susan 38 CT, are still living at Northbridge, Worcester Co., MA. Five children are in the household: Thomas A. 15, Leverett 13, Edwin F. 11, Hattie H. 8, & Charles P. 5. Also in the household is Edwin Carter 18 RI, a spinner. (Thomas was probably not b RI, though.)

In the 1870 Federal Census, Thomas is 48 MA, a machinist, and his wife Susan is 48 CT, still living at Northbridge. Their son Charles, 16 MA, a machinist's apprentice, is the only one of the siblings at home with their parents.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Thomas M. & Susan, both 58, are still at Northbridge. They are living on Church St., Whitinsville, MA. Thomas is still a machinist. Also with them is Mary C. Remington, 54, "cousin." She is probably Mary Catherine Remington, d/o John & Hannah (Southwick) Remington.

Thomas married Susan Miller 21 Feb 1844, Northbridge, MA. Susan (daughter of William Miller and Lucretia Williams) was born 1821, Norwich, CT; died 21 Feb 1897, MA; was buried , Pine Grove Cemetery, Northbridge, MA. [Group Sheet]

In the 1870 Federal Census, Leander C. & Rebecca Remington are living in Boston, MA. He is a confectioner. She is his second wife.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Leander Remington is age 76, living at Worcester, MA, with his wife Rebecca, age 63.

Leander's birth in Mendon, MA, was recorded at Northbridge, MA.

Leander married Lydia M. White 4 Feb 1846, Northbridge, MA. Lydia (daughter of Washington White and Lydia M. Unknown) was born 1826; died Aft 1 Jun 1850. [Group Sheet]

Leander married Rebecca Pierce 11 Feb 1858, MA. Rebecca was born 7 Apr 1837, MA; died Aft 14 Jun 1900. [Group Sheet]

In 1850, William Remington is age 22, working as a machinist at Northbridge, MA.

Is he the William B. Remington who married Martha E. Thompson in RI on 19 Nov 1863? (She was b c1827, d 10 Aug 1873 RIDI) But see information below, from A. B. Gerard.

The Northbridge, MA, VRs transcribed at NEGS web site have his dob as 3 Sep 1827. However, this seems too close to his sister Elizabeth -- unless one of their dates is incorrect. Or, they may have been twins born three months apart -- a possibility .

From A. B. Gerard on Remington message board at ancestry: "Benedict Remington and Mary Cathcart's son, William Benedict Remington, ended up in Kansas. There are military records of his enlistment from Whitinsville, Northbridge, MA. He served at a few forts in Texas that protected the Overland Mail Route and then upon discharge moved to Kansas in the late 1850s. He died there sometime before 1880. He married a woman named Julia Ann Johnson of Arkansas. They had at least two children, Mary Frances Remington (wife of Alexander Mills) and John Remington."

In the 1900 Federal Census, Sanford W. Remington is age 56, b MA, living at Shell Rock, Butler Co., IA. His wife Dora A. is 43, b IL. They have three chidren: Wilber G. 18 IL, Charles A. 16 IL, & Millie A. 13 IA.

In 1910, the family of five is still together at Shell Rock.

In 1920, S. W. Remington is age 76, still living at Shell Rock, IA. With him is son Charles A., 35. Married daughter Millie is listed on the same census page as wife of Henry F. Renning. Sanford's brother Herbert is at Cedar Falls, IA.

Sanford married Dora Augusta Ames 23 Jun 1880, Bloomington, McLean Co., IL. Dora was born 2 Dec 1856, Triumph, LaSalle Co., IL; died 30 Sep 1915, Shell Rock, Butler Co., IA; was buried , Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock, Butler Co., IA. [Group Sheet]

In the 1880 Federal Census, H. E. & Emeline W. Remington are living in Edford, Henry Co., Illinois, with their six-year-old daughter, Grace. In the 1920 Federal Census, Herbert E. Remington, age 70, and his daughter Grace E., age 45, are living in Cedar Falls, Black Hawk, Iowa.

Boyd Scott Remington's chart places this son in Benedict's family, but in 1850 he is apparently with Thomas & Susan, although it is difficult to read his name. The initials are L. L., anyway, and the birth year is the same.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Leverett L. & Eliza Remington, ages 33 & 35, are living in Northbridge, Worcester Co., MA. They have an 11-year-old daughter, Adaline.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Charles B. Remington is age 43, and according to the data was born in Aug 1856, MA. His wife, Emma J., is age 40 and was born in Sep 1859 Canada. They have been married 8 years. They have two sons: Herbert B. 5, and Charles B. 3, both b MA. Also is the household is a servant, Nellie Harback. They are living in Ward 6 of Worcester, Worcester Co., MA, near Charles's uncle, Leander C. Remington, and his wife Rebecca.

Both his birth record and the marriage record for his first marriage give his middle name as Bradford.
