In the 1850 Federal Census, Aice is age 72, living at Cranston, RI, with son Cristopher and his wife Areily. Tey are next door to John O. Fenner and family.

Alice married Caleb LeValley Abt 1792. Caleb (son of Michael LeValley and Amy Bailey) was born Abt 1770; died Aft 1 Jun 1830. [Group Sheet]

In the 1850 Federal Census, Sterrey B. Levalley & his wife Nancy, ages 56 & 58, are living in Manchester, Hartford, Co., CT. With them is Mary Torrey, age 78.

Joanna was "of Cranston, RI." In a letter handwritten by her brother Benjamin, he mentions that she was the wife of Caleb Remington of Johnston, and says that she died there at home in 1876. Her sons John & Andrew, and her daughter Joanna, continued to live in the family home throughout their adult lives.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Joanna Remington is age 60 and living at Johnston, RI. With her are the following family members: John 38, Andrew R. 36, Caleb 34, Benjamin L. 32, Christopher W. 29, Joanna 24, & William 60. I think this last individual is William Warner Remington, son of John & Sally (Paine) Remington, and thus a nephew of Joanna's husband.

However, four of these sons are listed in CA in the 1860 census at Little York, Nevada Co. See notes for them.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Joanna Remington is age 70 and living at Johnston, RI. In the household are several of her children, three grandchildren, and a daughter-in-law.

According to Joanna's gravestone, she died at age 76 years, 6 months, 28 days.

Joanna married Caleb Remington, Jr. 25 Nov 1819, Johnston, Providence Co., RI. Caleb (son of Caleb Remington, Sr. and Roby Warner) was born Between 1783 and 1784; died Between 4 Oct 1849 and 1850; was buried , Caleb Remington Lot, Historical Cemetery 32, Scituate Ave., Johnston, RI. [Group Sheet]

On 5 Sept 1883, Benjamin wrote a letter detailing some of his family's history. I have an electronic copy of that letter.

Benjamin married Emeline Borden 26 Nov 1826. Emeline (daughter of Abner Borden and Meriby Unknown) was born 3 Jan 1810, Fall River, MA; died 20 Oct 1850. [Group Sheet]

Benjamin married Susan Luther 1 Jan 1855, Pawtucket, RI. Susan (daughter of Simmons Luther and Susan Unknown) was born Abt 1808, Swansea, MA. [Group Sheet]

In the 1880 Federal Census, John is 58, single, and living in Johnston, RI with his single siblings Andrew & Joanna. John's gravestone says he died "aged 71 years & 19 days, Gone Home."

In the 1860 Federal Census, listed at Little York, Nevada Co., CA, are the following: J. C. Remington 38 RI, Caleb Remington 34 MA, B. L. Remington 32 MA, and C. W. Remington 26 RI. These are most likely the four brothers in this family. They are miners.

In the 1870s A. H. Remington owned a house on Scituate Ave., Johnston, RI. He is 51 and single in the 1880 Federal Census at Johnston, RI. Living with him are his single siblings John 58 and Joanna 44.

Unfortunately, I did not note the source for his date of death. There is a Caleb Remington age 50 in the 1870 census, living in Johnston; works at farming. Could this be the same individual?

In the 1870 Federal Census, Benjamin & Sarah are living with his mother and family at Johnston, Providence Co., RI. They have three children, but from their ages, it appears that they are from his first wife.

From Roger Remington:
"We were only aware of two brothers that came to California to mine. They were in an area up in the hills north east of Sacramento. N. Of interstate 80 near Colfax, CA.
There is still a Remington Hill Rd. near one of their claims. We know that Ben 1 came down to our area, but didn't know of the route of the other.
I found 'some' reference to the Remington mining moving into Nevada. There is a bit of confusion when you look at it, because their claims were in Nevada COUNTY, CA.
But they may have relocated into Nevada STATE. My uncle (Robert Remington, 2nd son of Ben III) has long since passed, but he did most of the research on this end, so far.

Possibly Christopher's middle name was Warner, his paternal grandmother's maiden name, or Westcott, his maternal great-grandmother's name. According to his gravestone, Christopher died "aged 46 years 6 months 28 days, Beloved, Lamented, Blest."

I assume she was Joanna LeValley Remington, named after her mother.

September 1862 - Enlisted in the War of the Rebellion in Company H. 22nd Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, and served first as Sergeant and then as a 2nd Lieutenant the rest of his term of service which expired July 7, 1863.
February 1st 1892 he was granted a pension at the rate of $12 per month under the Invalid Pension Law that was passed by Congress at Washington, and called the Act of June 27, 1890.
December 2, 1896 - resigned his position as head of the piping department at The Pratt & Whitney Co., Hartford, CT, after working there for 22 years. He listed age and health as his reasons for resigning. Letter is signed by F. A. Pratt, President, who attests to Benjamin's industry, superior ability, and faithfulness.
1896-1902 Used General Delivery in Providence, RI, as his mailing address so the rest of his family, except for Joanna Remington and Mary Cook Levalley Lovell, would not mess in his personal affairs.

In the Federal Censuses of 1900 and 1910, Benjamin L. & Lucinda M. (Maria) Remington are living at Castoria, San Joaquin Co., CA. In 1910 they are ages 47 & 46. According to census data, they have been married 20 years. They have three children: Benjamin L. 19, Irene V. 16, & Reuel R.

In the 1920 and 1930 censuses, Lucinda is Laurinda, so I am assuming this is her name.
