Her name is written as Dinah on the 1850 Federal Census, but Diana in the town history (Child's Gazetteer of Jefferson County). In the 1870 Federal Census, Dinah is age 85, living with her son Thomas and family in Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., NY.

"Dinah HALL (3/30/1785, Hancock, MA-2/1871 Lorraine, NY) m. Jonathan REMINGTON (1/5/1784-5/2/1861). Dinah Hall married Jonathan Remington, the Jefferson County NY Journal called the Remington family, "A family of good old New England stock." The couple left Hancock, MA for the newly opened settlement in New York State called the Black River Wilderness territory. They were among the earliest settlers in early 1800, when the forest supplied the raw material and the axe was their principal tool! The couple chose the fertile land in the hill country for their homestead called Highland Farm. Jonathan was a prosperous farmer and Dinah was an expert at weaving along with knitting, her favorite was adding intricate patterns to the linen she had made. Jonathan was a volunteer in the War of 1812 along with his brother Noel and Dinah's brother, Thomas Hall. The couple lived out their long lives on Highland Farm in Lorraine, New York, having raised their 7 children to adult hood. The farm remained in the family for 4 generations, until it was sold in 1915."

There is a Clark Hall age 26 living at Lorrain, NY, in 1850. I feel that his name must have some connection to Clark H. Remington. Perhaps they share a common ancestor.

In 1840 he is C. H. Remington, living near Jonathan Remington at Lorraine.

In the 1850 Federal Census, "Edward" & "Ann" Remington are ages 37 and 34, and are living at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY, with their daughter Sarah, age 6. Also with them are Phebe Hall 14, and Walter Wort (?) 17. Several other Remington families are nearby. Edmund was a Justice of the Peace and a farmer.

In the 1860 Federal Census, E. Remington is age 46 and Ann is 43; daughter Sarah is 17. They are still at Lorraine.

In the 1860 Federal Census, O. Remington is age 45 and his wife Amanda is 46. They have two children in the household: Charles 15 & Eva 4. The family is still living at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY.

In the 1870 Federal Census, "Orsamus" & Amanda are still living at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY with their four children and one (presumed) daughter-in-law, Lenora (w/o Charles).

In the 1880 Federal Census, "Orsmus" Remington is still living at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY, with his wife Amanda and two sons, Johnathan & Mortimer. Also living with them is a grandson, Willie Wells, age 5, born NY.

This family group is living nearby other family members, such as nephew Daniel J. Remington, sister-in-law Huldah Remington living with her son-in-law Byron Hitchcock, and other Remingtons who are probably more distantly related, such as Hiram & Levi Remington.

In both the 1860 and the 1870 Federal Census, Allen & Susan are living at Ellisburgh with their children Edmund & Mary. However, in 1860 their son is listed as Rufus (same estimated year of birth).

In the Federal Census of 1880, Allen & Susan are living at Ellisburgh, NY. With them are son Earl, and son Rufus and family.

In the 1860 Federal Census, Thomas & Laury are living with his parents at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY. In the household is Mary, 8, whom I assume to be their daughter.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Thomas & Laura are living at Ellisburgh, and with them is Tom's mom, Dinah, age 85. Next door is Dewitt Remington and his young wife Ella. DeWitt may be his first cousin.

In the 1860 Federal Census, D. J. & Mary Remington are ages 27 & 31, living at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY. They have two children, Cecil(e) 2 and Clayton 1. Daniel's mother Huldah, age 59, is nearby, living with the Hitchcocks (Daniel's sister Phebe and family).

In the 1870 Federal Census, Daniel & Mary Ann are living at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY, with their children Cecil(e), Clarence, & Armence. They are next door to the Hitchcock family. Mrs. Hitchcock (Ann/Elizabeth) is Daniel's sister. Their mother Huldah is also with the Hitchcocks.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Daniel J. & Margarett Remington are still living in Lorraine, Jefferson, NY, with their daughter Minnie M. age 16. They are nearby other family members, such as uncle "Orsmus," nephew Byron Hitchcock, and mother Huldah Remington. There are other Remingtons in town who may not be related -- other than very distantly (Hiram & Levi).

Could Margaret be a second wife, or just another name for Mary, or even the census taker's mistake?

Daniel married Mary Ann "Margaret" Young 3 Jan 1857. Mary (daughter of David Young and Catherine Rice) was born 22 Feb 1829, Pamelia, NY; died 23 Mar 1910. [Group Sheet]

According to DAR records, his name is Adelwiches Dyonisius Remington.

According to one web site, A. J. Dyonisius Remington settled at Big Springs, Nebraska.

However, he and his wife appear to be in the 1870 Federal Census at Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., NY, and are buried in the Maplewood Cemetery at Mannsville, Jefferson Co., NY. In 1880 A. Dyonisius Remington is age 41, still living at Ellisburgh with his mother-in-law Abby (?) Larmouth, nephew James Larmouth & Estella, and (presumed) son Merritt Remington, 6.

It is possible that A. Dyonisius Remington remarried after the death of his first wife, and at some point moved to Nebraska. In the 1920 Federal Census, there is a Hattie K. Remington, widow age 81, b. NY, living at Big Springs, NE. (See the following notes.)

"A. J. Dyonisius Remington married Phebe A. Larmonth the mother of his sons. When Phebe died, their only living son was just about 7 years old. A. D. married Hattie King in Sandy Creek, NY, two years later. His occupation on the census was 'dealer in fruit'. He began peddling fruit in New York City until he, along with his partners, owned one of the largest fruit markets in New York City. This was an age of sailing vessels - A. D. and his partners took their vessels to Cuba, to the islands and to the coast of the Mediterranean for their cargoes. When the steamship began to ply the ocean, A. D. with forethought and judgment knew they would destroy the profits of the trade so advised his partners to sell. They decided not to and became bankrupt while A. D. retired with a handsome fortune. He didn't have plans to retire and had several years ago purchased land in a new frontier, Nebraska, where the cowboys were! In July of 1886 the family of three left Sandy Creek, NY, drove a team and wagon to Buffalo, boarded a boat from there through the Great Lakes to Chicago. From there they drove across the prairies to their Ranch in Nebraska. Times began to get rough severe winters and drought forced many of the settlers to go back East. The hardy ones stayed and acquired more pasture land. A. D. is credited with saving Big Springs, NE by loaning money to those in need, procuring aid for the settlers and providing livestock on shares. A. D. was a rancher in Nebraska 13 years before he died. He was buried on his ranch for a couple of years, then as he had requested, his body was taken back to Mannsville, NY to be buried by the generations of family. The Nebraska newspaper honored him by these words; 'In the death of A. D. Remington, Deuel County in general have lost a valuable citizen. His neighbors, to whom he was banker, merchant and advisor already realize that it will be hard to find a merchant and banker so forbearing and an advisor so trustworthy.' "

In 1900, William M. and Carrie A. Hall, ages 64 NY and 67 CT, are living in the town of Oswego, NY. They have been married 40 yrs.

The soul of William Mortimer Hall, for many years a respectable resident of Oswego, passed to the home of his Maker at the home of his son, Major A.M. Hall, Washington, DC, on Thursday night.

Funeral services were held at Washington, DC Saturday afternoon. The body arrived here at noon yesterday and burial was made at Riverside cemetery in the afternoon after services in the Page Memorial chapel conducted by the Rev. W.F. Kettle. The funeral party consisted of Major and Mrs. A. M. Hall and Albert G. Hall, grandson of the deceased, of Washington, Jessie C. Hall, of New York City, Mrs. Lizzie Peck of Syracuse, Mrs. Josie Crittenden, Mrs. Lizzie Parkhurst, Oliver Ormsby and Max Saurez, all of Syracuse.

Mr. Hall was 80 years old. He was born in Lorraine, Jefferson county in 1833 and moved to Oswego with his parents when quite a young lad. He made this city his home until about 11 years ago when, after the death of wife, he went to live with his son. About that time he suffered a stroke of apoplexy. He partially recovered and was quite active up to last Christmas day, when the second stroke came, which carried him away.

Mr. Hall has always led an active life and following the Civil War was identified with a number of prominent business enterprises in this city. He was largely interested in canal transportation and at one time conducted a fleet of ten lioata. Later he took up milling and farming, but a panic in the early seventies swept away his property. He struggled courageously against reverse and for a number of years conducted the Davis livery barn and later a dairy farm in Oswego Town. He was a man of sterling worth, beloved by all who knew him. He was greatly devoted to his family, not a
member of which can recall a single unkind word that ever fell from his lips. He was an active attendant at church up to the Sunday before his death.

On January 18, 1860, he was joined in wedlock to Caroline Adams, a teacher in the Oswego public schools, at the home of Zina D Stevens. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. II. G. Ludlow, the first pastor of the Congregational church. They had three children, all of whom are living, Major A. M. Hall of Washington, Jessie C. Hall and DeLeon F. Hall, of New York. The latter was unable to attend the funeral because of a severe illness which confines him to his home.

The death of Mr. Hall breaks a chain of four generations in the Washington home, where he was very happy surrounded by his children, grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The affection of the latter for the old man was a subject of common remark in the neighborhood where he lived. He was their constant companion and playmate and guardian.

I am not sure which is his first name. In the 1860 census he is Rufus, but in the 1870 census he is Edmund. It appears to be the same family group in every other way.

In 1880 he is Rufus E. Remington, and his wife is Ruth C (?). They have three children and are living with Rufus's parents, Allen & Susan Remington, At Ellisburgh, Jefferson Co., NY.

In the Federal Census of 1 June 1900, Rufus E. & Ruth are at Sandy Creek, Oswego Co., NY. They have two daughters, Dora 20 & Kate 7.

In the Federal Census of 1 Jan 1920, Rufus & Ruth Remington are living on North Ridge Road in Sandy Creek, Oswego Co., NY. Their widowed daughter-in-law Leona and family are also in Sandy Creek.

In 1920 he is still at Sandy Creek, a widower age 79, listed as father-in-law living with Ward E. & Kate R. Crandall and their two sons.

In 1900 William Remington is age 26 and married. His grandmother Amanda Remington is living with his family at Boylston, Oswego Co., NY. I have made an assumption that his mother is Eva.

I am also assuming that Willie Wells and William Remington are the same individual. As far as I know, Orsemus & Amanda had only one daughter. It could be that Willie was born to Eva before she was married, or that she was married only briefly.

In the Federal Census of 1930, William J. & Mary A. Remington, ages 55 & 52, are living at Lorraine, Jefferson Co., NY. With them are Samuel E. 25 and Eva D. 22. Living nearby are Harold and George and their families.
