    The will of Samuel Hopkins, yeoman of West Greenwich, mentions his deceased father, Joseph Hopkins; sons Alexander, Samuel, Joseph, Beriah, & Ebenezer; and daughters Honour (Tillinghast), Sarah (Albro), & Lydia (Matteson).

    Samuel married Honour Brown Abt 23 Apr 1729, North Kingstown, RI. Honour (daughter of Alexander Brown and Honor Huling) was born Abt 16 Apr 1711; died Bef Apr 1790. [Group Sheet]

    This marriage to Phebe Case is probably a second marriage for Samuel, since his son Rufus was born c 1773 (RI Cemetery Database). Samuel's will dated 8 June 1813 WG, proved 27 Sep 1813, mentions his wife Phebe; sons Rufus, Amon, Jonathan, James, & Daniel: daughters Ruth Whitman, Ase Mires, Martha Potter, Sarah Kinyon, & Tabitha Case.

    I have very roughly estimated the birth years of Samuel's children mentioned in his will, specifically those by his first wife.

    Notes:

    He may be the Ebenezer Hopkins who married Abigail Davis on 22 March 1773 at West Greenwich, RI. They had a son Christopher b 6 Dec 1776 WG who married Dinah King, d/o Samuel, on 24 June 1798 WG. According to Ebenezer's will, proved in April 1827 WG, he also had two other sons, David & Alexander. This family needs more research to confirm.

    Notes:

    His name is written as both Lawton and Layton.

    In the 1850 Federal Census, Layton & Betsey Hopkins are living at West Greenwich, RI.

    In 1860 Layton is age 67, living at West Greenwich; Catherine Wightman, age 53, is in the household, keeping house. I am wondering if she is the mother of Catherine Whitman who married Layton's grandson, Calvin. (Whitman & Wightman were the same name at that time, and pronounced the same way.) Her age agrees.

    In the 1870 census, Layton & Katherine Hopkins, ages 77 & 60, are still at West Greenwich.

    Notes:

    Is she the Catherine Wightman, age 53, in the 1860 census living at West Greenwich with Layton Hopkins? Probably.

    She is probably the daughter mentioned as Catherine Whitman in the will of Jonathan Hopkins of West Greenwich dated 18 Sep 1848. This will also mentions land sold to Layton Hopkins. Thus, I have made an assumption that Jonathan is her father.

    In the 1850 Federal Census, she appears to be Catharine Whitman age 45, living in Warwick, RI, with some of her children and her married daughter and son-in-law. Her son Henry and husband Thomas are in West Greenwich.

    In the Federal Census of 1880, she is probably the Catherine Aylesworth, age 74, living with her son George W. Whitman and family in West Greenwich, RI.

    Catherine married Thomas Jefferson Whitman 13 Feb 1825. Thomas was born 25 Feb 1804, Coventry, Kent Co., RI; died 30 Mar 1869. [Group Sheet]
