In the 1920 Federal Census, T. J. Remington, age 61, and Celesta Remington, age 58, are living at Winslow, Washington Co., AR. Their 3-year-old grandson, John (?) F. Remington, born in MI, is living with them.

In 1930, Thomas J. Remington is age 71, widowed, and living with his widowed sister Margaret A. Thompson, age 80, in Danville, Knox Co., OH.

Thomas is the grandfather of Virginia Mae (Remington) Rich, who sent me the Remington family portrait.

Thomas married Celesta Jackson May 1883. Celesta (daughter of William Jackson) was born 17 Nov 1861, OH; died 25 Oct 1929; was buried , Workman Cemetery, Rt. 62, Danville, Knox Co., OH. [Group Sheet]

Bernice married Ray Clement Smith Abt 1906. Ray was born Abt 1883, IA; died Aft 1 Apr 1930. [Group Sheet]

In the 1910 Federal Census, Roscoe C. Remington is age 23, living at Eureka Springs Ward 1, Carroll Co., Arkansas.

Roscoe's 1917 draft registration is signed "Roscoe Conkling Remington." He is described as of medium height, slender, with brown hair and blue eyes; age 30. He is a printer with News (?) Pub. Co., Buckeye City, OH. His 1942 draft registration form gives his address as 6127 Kimbark Ave., Chicago, Cook Co., IL. He is age 55. His wife's name is given as Lottie. His employer is How to Sell, Inc.

Roscoe arrived on the ship Empress of Scotland, sailing from Cherbourg, France, 29 June 1929, and arriving at Quebec, Canada, 6 July 1929. He was age 42 y 6 mo. The manifest gives his birthplace as Richland Township, Knox Co., OH, dob 25 Dec 1886. His address is given as 5 East First St., Mount Morris, IL.

In the Federal Census of 1930, the family is at Mount Morris, Ogle Co., IL: Roscoe C. 43 OH, Charlotte 38 South Africa, William 11 OH, Thomas 7 OH, and Celesta 5 OH. Roscoe is a printer.

Roscoe married Carlotta "Lottie" Ida Damm Sundberg Abt 1914. Carlotta was born 8 Nov 1891, South Africa; died 8 May 1990. [Group Sheet]

In the 1920 Federal Census, John W. Remington is age 30 and a widower, living on Main Street in Murdo City, Jones Co., SD. He is a painter.

In 1930 the family, including three children, are living at Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY.

John married Margaret McIntyre Abt 1915. Margaret was born 15 Feb 1891; died 4 Jul 1916. [Group Sheet]

In the Federal Census of 1930, Joseph & Emma Remington, ages 37 & 35, are living at Akron, Summit Co., OH. They have three children: Joseph 13, William 11, & Richard 5, all b OH.

From Pam Amari: "My Uncle Joe lived in Pinehurst. NC, till he died and would come and visit on his way back and forth to Ohio. He was an avid golfer and in Pinehurst lived on the border of the Pinehurst Country Club."

From the obituary: "A believer in good government, he was a member of Common Cause. He had been a longtime member of the First Unitarian Church in Wilmington. He was a 1940 graduate of the University of Chicago and earned his PhD in organic chemistry from the same university in 1945. During the war, he worked for the War Department, researching ways to detect chemical warfare agents. After receiving his PhD, he went to work for the DuPont Company, first at Jackson Laboratory in Deepwater, NJ, and later at the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington, DE. His early work involved ways to dye nylon. His name is on 11 patents held by DuPont. In 1961, he conceived the idea for a reverse osmosis filtration system. He worked on the project for nine years; the product became Permasep. Permasep systems now desalinate well over a billion gallons of water a day worldwide, something of which Bill was very proud. In 1971, he took a leave of absence from DuPont and taught chemistry for 2 years at the Escuela Politecnica Nacional in Quito, Ecuador. He then returned to Wilmington, DE, and continued to work for DuPont until his retirement in 1982. An inveterate tinkerer, he took delight in figuring out how things worked and when needed, adapting, modifying, fixing, or otherwise altering them in his own way. Most often, they worked the way he wanted them to."

In the 1920 Federal Census, John F. Remington, age 3, is living with his grandparents, T. J. & Celesta Remington, at Winslow, Arkansas.

In 1930 he is age 13, living at Jeromesville, Ashland, OH, with Ray & Bernice Smith and family. Bernice (Remington) Smith is John's aunt.

Jack Remington has written the following memorial poem, placed in the Remington Pioneer Cemetery, Holmes Co., OH:

You who follow us in time

Obituary:
Slingerlands -- Virginia R. Rich, died Sunday, February 19, 2017. Born Virginia Mae Remington in Chicago, Illinois, November 23, 1925 to John Wanamaker and Nellie Tooth Remington.

As an infant, with family in tow, Virginia moved to Brooklyn. Street smart and loving life in the Big City, she always said she was a Brooklyn girl.

In '37, during the depression, the family moved, upstate, to Adams Place, Delmar, NY. Virginia attended Bethlehem Central where she graduated in '43. One of her neighbors, back in the day, was Eva Marie Saint.

After graduation, Virginia worked for the Argus and the Greenwood printing companies, Albany and learned the technique of airbrush. Her true calling was pen and ink and she was incredibly gifted in putting pen to paper.

In June '44 she married the dream of her life, Lieutenant Lowell Henry Rich Jr., at St. Paul's Church, Albany. Then set out, with her husband, to reside in Texas at Midland Army Airfield, till the war ended.

Returning to Delmar, in '51Virginia and Lowell found the perfect property where they would design and build their home, naming it "Richwood Acres". Virginia did the architectural plans and Lowell, built their home.

Virginia loved to travel. In childhood there were the weekend trips and one to Canada to see the Dion Quintuplets. She thought that was the best.

In her adult life she traveled throughout Europe visiting the world renown art museums. She traveled to China in the late '70's, when China opened it's borders. With pencil and paper in hand she captured the wondrous sights and culture of an Asian nation. Upon return, she submitted her story along with her artwork, to the "National Observer", which they printed.

As well as her worldly trips, Lowell and Virginia flew the eastern seaboard in their Cessna. Mom claims, on one flight, she looked out the side window and there was the Red Baron, flying with them in tandem.

Virginia was sought after for her gifted ability as a graphic artist, executing house portraits numbering into the hundreds. Local commissions included, Chemical Bank-Eastern, N.A., Cohoes, Bellevue Hospital, St. John's Church, Cohoes, and many more.

Commissioned by Hudson Valley Community College, Troy. Virginia created a 6' by 12' Mural titled "Hudson Valley Heritage" installed in the lobby of Gunther Hall, "Symbolizing the past, present and future of education in the Hudson Valley" Her quote taken from the Kickerbocker News.

One of her final projects and dearest to her heart, were pen and inks documenting life in the tri-village, entitled "Vanishing America". Back in the '70's, many of the buildings at the Four Corners, Delmar were slated to come down,. She captured the moments in her history where she bloomed as a child into womenhood. Virginia Remington Rich never let the grass grow under her feet. She set off running and she never looked back. Friends both young and old were always in touch, just to see what Virginia was up to. Born with grace and dignity. A natural beauty with her platinum hair and those big baby blues.

Side notes: She could sing, dance, whistle, tap dance,, played tennis till 80, roller skated, shot a gun, fished, skied and played golf. Directed Sammy Kaye's Orchestra at the Palace Theater, '43. Was in the first Tulip Queen Pageant. A Girl Scout and then a Girl Scout leader and a life long member of the Bethlehem Art Association, which she was honored at during their 50th Celebration, November 2016.

Lowell Henry Rich, Jr. deceased, married 57 years to Virginia. Daughters: Pamela Rich and David Amari, Dover NH. Gretchen Remington Rich deceased and Daniel Paul Fenno, Epping NH. Grand Children: Bradley Rich Amari, Dover NH. Jonathan David and Christa Amari, McKees Rocks PA. Great Grand Baby: Owynn Bradley Amari. Brother: James "Jimmy" Asa Remington, Richmond, Virginia. Five nieces and nephews and ten great nieces and nephews.

To all the gentle souls that helped my mother through this stage of her life, can never say thank you enough.
