  1. 1.  Benjamin F. Remington was born 11 Jun 1799, MA; died Aft 1 Jun 1860.

    He may be the Benjamin Remington, Jr., of Savoy who on 16 Apr 1836 had his name legally changed to Benjamin Franklin Remington. (I believe this is correct because he is named as Benj F. in his son Henry's marriage record.) It should be noted that John Remington of nearby North Adams, MA, also had a son named Benjamin Franklin Remington b1799.

    This Ben, Jr., may also be the Benjamin Franklin Remington who served the Baptist church in Savoy, as well as several others in Franklin County, as a Baptist minister from 1820 to 1855 (see p. 17 of the Remington genealogy compiled by Lois Remington Smith).

    For the present time, I am making an assumption that the census data for Benjamin & Lydia Remington, living in Savoy, MA, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses pertains to this particular Benjamin. In 1850 it appears that this family is living near Aaron & James Remington and their families, and their father Benjamin. It makes sense that this is their brother. The dates match, also.

    In 1850 Benjamin Remington is 50 and Lydia is 48. They have four children: Andrew 18, Ellen 16, Emma 13, & Franklin 10. I think their ages may not be precise, based on other evidence.

    In 1860 Benjamin F. Remington is 60 and Lydia is 57. Son Franklin B. is with them, age 15; as well as Martha J. Cowen, 34, tailoress.

    Note: Other than the four children found in the 1850 census, the names and dates for these children came from Pat Boyden's Remington genealogy, and have not as yet been verified by me.

    Notes:

    In 1870 he may be the H. W. Remington, age 44 MA, blacksmith, living at Austin, Lander Co., NV, with A. Remington, 41 MA, apparently his wife. However, they are living next door to the family of W. J. Remington, age 30, also a blacksmith, born in NY. These families need more research.

    In the 1860 census there are G. Remington & H. Remington, both males born MA, living at Carson City, NV.

    Henry married Philena R. Godfrey 1 Apr 1846, Amherst, MA. Philena (daughter of William B. Godfrey and Anne Unknown) was born Abt 1827. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    I am not positive, but I think he is the A. J. Remington, age 35 b MA, living at Clark, WA, in the 1870 Federal Census; and also the Andrew J. Remington, age 46 b MA, living in Clark, WA, in the 1880 Federal Census. I cannot locate him in the 1860 census, so perhaps he was on the move. The names of his two children may be clues to his family of origin. In any case, I am including this marriage and the children here, pending further research to confirm.

    According to Lois Remington Smith in "The Remington Family" p. D-2, Andrew's wife Ellen died at Vancouver, WA; so this seems to confirm the above information.

    Is she the Ellen E. Sanderson age 56 widow living in Boston in 1900?

    Or, possibly she is Ellen R. Sanderson age 58, widow, living at Whately, Franklin Co., MA. However, according to the census that woman has had no children (??).
